Edley Shine he legendary Edley Shine, formerly of Born Jamericans, has proven that he boasts a timeless touch and innate ability to wow generations of fans with his infectious brand of Reggae, Dancehall and Hip Hop music. True to form, the powerhouse artist returns with the ultimate feel good single and video "Babylon Breeze." The nostalgic, yet timely "Babylon Breeze," is set to leave an indelible mark on listening audiences far and wide. "Babylon Breeze" is a delightful prelude to Edley Shine's long awaited "Based on Talent" EP -- his first solo project in 20 years. Edley Shine's "Babylon Breeze" transcends music boundaries and genres. Fans are set for a musical treat, as "Babylon Breeze" ingeniously fuses a 50's standard style with a modern Reggae Dancehall flow. When asked about "Babylon Breeze" Edley declares, "'Babylon Breeze' is a trailblazing song with a 'Caribbean Motown' vibe. It breaks the mold of the recycled trap Dancehall sound of late and is the type of music we need in these times....definitely a song that elevates and inspires listeners as soon as the melody drops." And if your wondering where the clever song title comes from, with a smile, Edley Shine says, "In the Jamaican community, 'Babylon Breeze' is the air conditioner, aka a man made source of cool air. Jah know, the term just stuck with me and when I thought about the nature of the song and the craving for a cool breeze in summer, "Babylon Breeze" was perfect!" Produced by young producer Roe Summerz, a mastermind behind hits for Vybz Kartel and Tommy Lee, "Babylon Breeze" has got next! Adding to the fun mature sound of "Babylon Breeze" is Edley's seamless expansion into an invigorating artistic space, which sees the artist both singing and deejaying on the single he also describes as "hard hitting, stand out and massive." With beautiful Jamaica as a backdrop, the "Babylon Breeze" video boasts picturesque scenery and island vibes. As Edley Shine continues his legacy in 2020, "Babylon Breeze" is just a sample of what he has under his belt. The Baritone lyricist, who rose to fame as 1/2 of legendary duo Born Jamericans, has also amassed the attention of the Cali Roots scene, winning over the ears and stages of top bands and fans alike. Introduced to the scene by Cali Roots blogger and power player Mike Patti, Edley Shine teamed up with Orlando based Reggae/Rock Band Kash’d Out for their "Weed Man" single and video from their "Undercover" album. In February 2020, Edley Shine joined Cali Roots giants Pepper and Kash'd Out for a performance on the DC leg of their “Step To The Local Motion Tour.” "The vibes and energy were surreal," says Edley Shine. "Quite humbling to hear the bands' admiration and respect for my
T
8
music and career." The artistic wheels are in motion with some collabos in the works. Pay attention because good music "cyaan dun" (can't finish). Edley Shine has wasted no time preparing his dose of feel good music with his new EP "Based on Talent," which is set for a May 29, 2020 release. A stellar effort which boasts well orchestrated elements of Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop and more, "Based on Talent" sees Edley Shine at a creative peak. The skilled artist ingeniously perfects the sound that thrust him to musical prominence in the 90's as 1/2 of ground breaking group Born Jamericans and douses it with timeless appeal. The long awaited 5-track "Based on Talent" EP (plus a bonus song) is Edley Shine's first solo project in over 20 years. As the title suggests, talent is both the driving force of the EP and that of quality, long lasting music in an ever changing entertainment climate. Teaming up with notable producers like Roe Summerz and Riddim Boss, each curated track on the EP will please the palates of music lovers far and wide. After more than 20 years of refixes, hit songs, underground bangers and burgeoning popularity on the Cali Roots scene with new generations of fans, the barritone artist with "Da Big Voice" unleashes musical fire on the praise-worthy release and shines through out. Priding himself with a mature, yet festive vibe, "Based on Talent" boldly showcases Edley Shine's gift with the pen and ability to seamlessly switch up styles over tracks that could easily rock any radio station, playlist, club or Dancehall bashment. Whether the lyrical don is spewing straight hardcore deejay bars, singjaying or straight up singing, Edley Shine doesn't hesitate to expand his artistic landscape on this effort.
RED INK MAGAZINE
"This project is special to me, as I poured over 20 years of my creative energy into 'Based on Talent' to demonstrate that I can thoroughly entertain the masses with a quality body of music as a solo artist," says Edley Shine. The candid Edley Shine adds, "The timing to release 'Based on Talent' couldn't be more appropriate as the world craves music to entertain them, warm their hearts and deflect from trying circumstances of today." True to his Jamaican heritage, Reggae and Dancehall sounds take center stage, but elements of R&B and Hip Hop perfectly round out the EP. Whether he is saluting natural queens on the candid and melodious "Factory Skin," unleashing hardcore Dancehall lyrical word play on "Cyan Recova," crooning grown up settings on "Big Mon Ting" or turning up the party vibes on "Glow Party," every tune will have one rocking incessantly and/or singing along. u 9

SHAWN ICE hawn Ice is a rising Dancehall Reggae sensations coming out of the DMV (DC, MD, VA) area. He is an artiste with a flair for word play & the ability to paint a vivid picture for the audience through music. Shawn Ice was born in St. Mary, Jamaica and migrated to the United State a few years ago and settled in the DC area. Music came quite natural to him from a very early age and by the age of fourteen, Shawn was already molding a professional image for himself, Deejaying for anyone who would listen. He was always writing songs. After high school, Shawn moved to Kingston in an effort to further pursue his love for the music since that was where the most notably successful people in music lived. Shawn cultivated several relationships in the budding dancehall movement that help him in furthering his growth and development as an artiste. Shawn still applies the same work ethics in the United States and continues to build new music relationships and create a network of fans and friends who truly admire his talent. Little Richard Rock & Roll
One of the Most Recognizable Voices in Music Gone Forever, But Never Forgotten. Little Richard Will be Missed. On May 9th, 2020 Richard Wayne Penniman, better known as Little Richard, at the age of 87, had his flamboyant light extinguished, after losing his battle with Bone Cancer. Little Richard was known for his incredible pipes. He had a voice that was easily recognizable by everyone that heard it. Ending every big syllable with his iconic shriek or yell is what propelled his earlier music to the heights of fame. Even though his biggest hits were released in the 1950’s, there is not a single generation that is unfamiliar with the likes of Tutti Frutti and Good Golly Miss Molly. Those early songs reached meteoric fame and led to the inspiration of other timeless legends like The Beatles. Interestingly, it was Little Richard who inspired the Beatles, and then when Little Richard had taken break from Rock music to focus on his gospel music roots, it was the Beatles releasing a cover of his song Long Tall Sally that inspired this flamboyant rocker to come back into the Rock spotlight. Little Richard was openly gay and extremely flamboyant in his actions and iconic lavish outfits, however his antics weren’t always tolerated. Being born in the 1930’s he was born into an era where homosexuality 18
was shunned. So much was this the case, that at the age of 13 his own father kicked him out of his family home because of his nature. This led to his raising being left to the white upper class family that took him in and his uncles who ran a local church. It was with this new found family and the love of God and the church that inspired his bright career to ignite. It was in his uncle’s church that he learned how to sing gospel and how to play the piano. The rest is history. He had two successful careers in one lifetime. He was a legendary rocker, and an equally iconic gospel singer. In some songs the genre’s crossed but he treated them both with equal perfection of his craft. So incredible were Little Richard’s songs that he became one of the ten original inductees into the inaugural Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 1986. In 1993 he earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and in 1994 he received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation. The only thing louder than Little Richard’s voice was his lavish costumes and mannerisms. But that extreme nature was exactly what he was going for. He made sure that everyone knew that he was proud of whom he was and that there was no one else in the world exactly like him. This marvelous showman will be missed. u

Iconic Funny Man Jerry Stiller, Gone, But Our Laughter Will Never End.... On May 11th, 2020 Jerry Stiller, better known to many as his iconic personas, Frank Costanza and Arthur Spooner, died of natural causes at the age of 92. Perhaps best known to this generation as the crazy and loud father of George Costanza on the show Seinfeld. Frank Costanza was such an iconic character in the show, that his made up holiday of Festivus, A winter the holiday for the rest of us, that was a creation within the show, has a cult following today, complete with T-shirts and holiday decorations. Most people would find it hard to believe that he was only in 30 episodes, because so many of his character’s storylines were so unforgettable. After Seinfeld ended Jerry Stiller resumed a similar acting role playing the crazy loud father of Leah Remini’s character on The King of Queens. Arthur Spooner was a character that will also be remembered because he was in almost every episode and was given some of the most comedic storylines of the entire series. Although, Jerry Stiller’s legendary comedic talents are most recognizable from his run in the 1990’s and early 2000’s top rated comedy sitcoms, his successful career actually started much sooner than that. He was a classically trained actor and started out by creating a comedy duo with his wife Anne Mears, in the 1960’s. This comedy duo was one of the most recognizable comedy teams of that generation. The duo played countless nightclubs, and had over three dozen appearances on the Ed Sullivan show, and other television and radio talk shows. They became the face and voice of Blue Nun Wine and Amalgamated Bank serving as the front people for all of their television and radio ads. Then in the 1970’s and 80’s Jerry demonstrated some of his classical training playing incredible dramatic roles both on and off Broadway in several highly acclaimed shows, including The Ritz, HurlyBurly, The Threepenny Opera and Central Park. Jerry Stiller’s legacy of comedy will live on through the syndicated success of Seinfeld and King of Queens and let us not forget that he is also the father of another comedy legend, Ben Stiller. Jerry Stiller will remain one of the funniest comedians to have ever graced the silver screen, and his characters George Costanza and Arthur Spooner will live on in our laughter forever. A funny man was taken from us, but our laughter will never stop. u 20

Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar
ello and welcome back to my recipe corner. Now that the unofficial start to the summer is kicked off after Memorial Day weekend some of us are finding ourselves in somewhat of a different place the same time last year. If you remember we had articles for health smoothies and summer salads. Now that many of my days go by in lounge pants instead of pencil skirts, mealtimes are also looking a bit different. I find myself constantly searching the internet for new dinner ideas and new recipes. However, I never seem to have any issues coming up with the main part of the dish but typically struggle to come up with the side dishes. This month’s loaded potato is a restaurant favorite but have you ever made it at home? It’s another one that you can adjust to your own liking. If you’re like me, I would omit the bacon and maybe top with some crispy fried onions. Bon appetite!
T RY O U R M E N U Bon Appetite

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 400°. Place potatoes directly on rack and bake until soft and easily pierced with the tip of a knife, 1 hour to 1 hour, 15 minutes, depending on size. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. 2. Slice warm potatoes in half and remove flesh with a spoon and place in a large bowl; discard skin. 3. Mash flesh and add butter, cream cheese, sour cream and milk and stir to combine and until butter and cream cheese is melted. Fold in 2 cups cheddar, three quarters of the bacon, three quarters of the chopped green onion, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Brush a medium baking dish with butter and scrape potato mixture into dish. Sprinkle with remaining 3/4 cup cheddar cheese and bake until cheese is melty, about 20 minutes. Turn oven to broil and broil until golden, about 2 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes. 5. Top with remaining bacon and green onions.
