Rising Vibe Reggae ORL ANDO AMPHITHEATRE AT THE CENTRAL FLORIDA FAIRGROUNDS

Rising Vibes rolled into the Central Florida Fair Grounds, February 22nd on a chilly cold Saturday evening. The crowds were a little smaller because of the unseasonably frigid weather but the concert was bigger than ever with some of the biggest names in Ska today. The fans that did brave the elements to come out enjoyed a Skanking good time, skanking and moshing until their hearts were content. The Main Stage had a fantastic line up of artists. Orlando’s own “Control This” opened up the show with a fantastic performance, followed by Mike Love who brought his patented brand of barefoot controlled soundboards, sweet guitar sounds and lyrical messages of Peace and Love. Mike Love is the perfect blend of hippie and Rastafarian. Saint Cloud, Florida’s Supervillains came on the stage next bringing their super entertaining personalities and funny lyrics with them. Their performance was

stellar. These guys never disappoint. World beloved Fishbone with their energetic and very unique front man, Mr. Angelo Moore, lit up the stage midway with an incredible punk rock, ska and funkadelic fusion that warmed the crowd right up. The energy from these guys was out of this world. Five out of six of the original 1979 band members were here on stage tonight and it showed; you can’t fake synergy like that. Mad Caddies followed up with their songs from their new cover album and brought the shivering fans right back to the skanking moshpit. Their original music is sublime and so is their cover of Sublime. Closing out the show was the Expendables. They brought exactly the kind of act that the frigid fans waited for and closed out the show in style. The entire event was run incredibly smooth, big shout out to Rick Everett, for organizing this great night. Wish the weather had been better, but this show was one for the memory books. lorida’s premier reggae festival, Reggae Rise Up, has released the full lineup for its 2020 event. For its sixth year, Reggae Rise Up Florida is scheduled to make its return to Vinoy Park in Downtown S t . Petersburg on March 20th, 21st, and 22nd.

The festival’s 2020 lineup features some of the biggest names in reggae. Reggae Rise Up Florida 2020 lineup will include performances from Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Nahko and Medicine for The People, Slightly Stoopid, SOJA, Dirty Heads, and Iration. Backstage Interviews @ Rising Vibes Reggae & Ska Festival 2020 CONTROL THIS (Jeff Richey – Lead Vocals and Sax) Red Ink: What was your major influence to get into music, you know, Punk, Ska, even your Reggae influence? Jeff: Well, I have been playing in a ska band since I was 15. So I have been in a ska band for most of my life, so it is just what I do. I just grew up with it and liked playing a saxophone.” Red Ink: Did your family do the whole music thing? Jeff:No, I just grew up in the 90’s so, that period gave band geeks the chance to be cool.” Red Ink: What about the reggae influence? Jeff: “I mean, I love reggae music, You know that Ska music started first and then Reggae music came later, but they both have a huge impact on the kind of music that we play.” Red Ink: Are there specific reggae artists that you try to draw from? Jeff: “As far as reggae it is a lot of the early reggae from Treasure Isle, and a lot of the Trojan stuff came out in England in the early 70’s, like some of the British Reggae stuff and some of the imports, and those were a big influence as far as reggae goes, and also, I am a big Dennis Brown fan, a big Gregory Isaacs fan, so there is definitely some “Roots” reggae elements to the stuff we do, as well.”

FISHBONE ( John Norwood Fisher- co founder and Bass Player) Red Ink: Your band is a true genre bender. You have facets of so many different song styles and music all blended together and I understand you have commented about this in the past about how all music should lose its barriers and just flow with each other, which style of music would you say was your biggest influence as far as for the music you create. Is there any one particular style that stands out? John:“The primary influence of Fishbone is probably Funk. Probably, because of how we all grew up. The majority of the band was born in the mid-60’s becoming aware of everything going on around us as we moved into the 70’s. Ya know, we all grew up in predominantly black neighborhoods and grew up as fans of Funkadelic; like “Sly and the Family Stone.” So that’s the foundation, but we were very fortunate in that what Funkadelic was, was freedom of musical expression. There is a lot in it, that you might not recognize as black expression, unless you were there and living it. It showed us that we could really have freedom. “What I mean, is as an artist, you could do whatever the fuck you want. A lot of people and artists don’t know that and they just try to follow all the rules and draw inside the lines, we were like, we are going draw all outside the lines and up on the ceiling and walls and on the floor and create 20

the musical piece that we deem necessary and actually expresses our soul, rather than what fits the mold.” Red Ink: Is there any one genre that really stands out as the primary sound in the music you create. Is it Ska, Funk, Pop, Reggae? John: “I would say Ska that we are really rooted in Ska as our musical expression and then comes Reggae. Really Ska and Reggae together is the meat of what it means to be Fishbone.” Red Ink: One last question, I know that you and your brother are original founding members, but many of the group have been in and out over the years, doing things solo and with other groups, how many original members are together at present. John:“Well at the show tonight, you are going to see a group from that is with 5 out of the 6 original members from the 70’s. We have me Norwood Fisher, my brother “Fish” Fisher, Chris Dowd, Angelo Moore, and Walter A. Kibby II.” Red Ink: Wow, that is great to hear, is there any chance of getting the final 6th member back on board? John: “As long as we are all alive, it is possible, but right now we are where we are at. But you know what, I would love to see the complete picture again, but we will see.”

MAD CADDIES (Sacha Lazor and Chuck Robertson Founding Members) Red Ink: You guys are known as a West Coast Ska band with touches of other genres like Reggae and Punk. What would you say was your biggest inspiration to become a Ska band? Sacha: “They are here at the show right now. Yeah Fishbone and the Mighty Mighty Boss Tones were our biggest inspirations. And today is really cool because this is the first time we have been able to play on the same stage as them since 1995, so it is really cool to play with your Idols. Red Ink: Is there any inspiration for the Reggae tone? Sacha: Reggae,I love them all; I am a really big reggae fan, I mean I love Beres Hammond, Ken Booth, I could go on and on. Ernest Ranglin, an instrumental Guitar Player is one of my favorite reggae artists.” Red Ink: Where do you guys like to play most, home in Cali or around the world? Sacha: “Oh, we love everywhere but there are definitely places we enjoy more. We play a lot in Canada and Europe all over North and South America.”

Red Ink: Do you guys have any new albums or singles coming out? Sacha: Yes we do, Before we launched the cover album a year and half ago, we had original music that we were ready to put out, but the label wanted the cover album out first so we have been sitting on this batch of songs for a while now and are really stoked to get them out and finished. We are going to start releasing singles in a month and then we are going to do an EP.”

THE SUPERVILLIANS Red Ink: Reggae inspired music, coming out of Saint Cloud, FL a small farming town. How did that happen? Dominic: “Uh, I think we got a lot of the inspiration from outside of the community, when you grow up in a small town like Saint Cloud, I think your main objective is to get out… and Reggae was our ticket to get out of Saint Cloud.” “But really as far as influence, we had some friends that were older and left town and went to Atlanta and brought back some music that we really liked, a lot of Punk Rock Music, and it was out of listening to Punk Rock that we got into liking other genres like Reggae and Ska.” “We were listening to Rage Against the Machine when they came and brought back some Operation Ivy and Sublime, after hearing the Sublime record we were like yeah, we really want to do that.” Red Ink: So was Sublime your biggest inspiration? Dominic: “I wouldn’t say biggest, as a matter of fact some of our biggest inspirations are actually here today at Rising Vibes. Fishbone, and Mad Caddies. They are some of our favorite bands. Yeah so in like 4 minutes one of our favorite bands will be on stage, Fishbone. So… .next question.” (Laughter) Red Ink: When you guys started playing this Reggae, Ska, Punk music, how was your reception, did you start playing here in Saint Cloud, Locally? Dominic: Actually we wound up getting a contract down in St. Thomas and started going there a lot. We were really young and they brought us down there and we started to really get into the culture of the reggae and the culture down there. We have been going down there for over 20 years. We go there a couple times a year. We used to spend two weeks at a time there, now we do about a week at a time. We were like 19-20 years old and they gave us a shot at House of Blues and we thought we were on the top of the mountain, and then someone called us and said ‘Hey you want to come down to St. Thomas in the Virgin Island and play for like two weeks straight.’ We were like ‘What’s that and Where’s that.’ Then we find it on the map and we were like ‘Yes we would like to do that.’ And after that it was like this is what we really want to do, just go all around and play our music.”

MIKE LOVE Red Ink: So you have been in Hawaii your whole life? Mike: “Yeah, I grew up there, my dad was from there.” Red Ink: So you go back and forth a lot from doing solo stuff and being with a band…..? Mike: “I am still with a band, I have my own band and I

am actually flying out to East Asia to do some shows with my band tomorrow.” “It is just a matter that it is two very different things for me, so doing the solo thing is the root of it. My band is called The Full Circle because before I started doing the solo thing I came from a really big band and I was arranging all of this music and writing all of this music for a big band and then I started doing solo gigs and I realized that the nature of the music I was writing wasn’t really applicable to play just by myself and I realized that music really needs to be powerful just on its own without all of the bells and whistles, you know. So it was really crucial for me to start doing the solo thing because I needed it to force me to write music that was more powerful. More powerful in the words and meaning than in the big instruments behind me, I realized I was relying too much on the orchestration, you know like dynamic shifts in the band that build up to these huge crescendos and then break down. I mean it was a really cool band but it was really focused on that aspect of things, and I realized I couldn’t play a lot of those songs by myself. And so when I started doing that I realized that I just need to write some music that I can just play a few chords and then sing the lyrics and have it be just as powerful as if there is a huge band playing. And from there I just started hand picking a few musicians to add to what I was doing. I did the whole solo thing for a couple of years and kind of got well known for doing that and it became my career. So when I started adding musicians back, I really made sure that I handpicked these people and they were people that I really vibed with.”

THE EXPENDABLES (Adam Patterson – Drummer and Singer) Red Ink: The big break for The Expendables came from meeting the band Slightly Stoopid, and they kind of took you under their wing, they helped publish your first few albums and guided you guys along the way. Are you still close with them? Barbie: “Yeah, we know them real well and have known them for a long time. We used to bug them online to play their shows when we were kids and eventually we bugged them enough and they finally let us play. Then we kind of just became friends over time.” Red Ink:Even now you still do gigs together? Barbie: Yeah we still do gigs together. The drummer just texted me the other day, said ‘hey check this out’ and you know it’s great that we are still friends.” Red Ink: Do you have any new albums, EPs or singles coming out soon? barbie: “We have a single coming out on the 28th of February, so… in about a week. It is called Lives and Loves and no one really knows about it, I have never really told anyone except you right now, so you are the first to know.” There you have it folks. by Michael Devine u 21

Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar

elcome again to my fun with food column. To be fully honest, shrimp isnâ€™t something I enjoy to eat but the health benefits of shrimp and seafood in general cannot be denied. So this recipe is dedicated to all you seafood and taco lovers out there. Shrimp is a lean protein that is packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals. It also cooks up in a few minutes so it is a great option for quick midweek dinner. Pairing it in a taco is sure to be a favorite for the entire family. Do try the recipe and enjoy!

Instructions: 1 In a bowl whisk together olive oil, garlic, cumin, salt and cayenne pepper (if using). Add in shrimp and toss to coat completely. Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes to give the flavors a chance to marry. 2 Cook shrimp in a skillet on medium heat until pink and cooked through, about 5 minutes. Turn off heat and cover to keep warm. 3 Use enough oil to lightly coat the bottom of a small pan, about 2 tablespoons. Heat over medium-high heat. Cook tortillas one at a time until soft, about 30 seconds on each side. Fold over to make a taco shell. As you cook each tortilla, place them on paper towels to absorb any of the oil left over. 4 Stir all ingredients for the Cilantro-Lime Sour Cream together in a bowl. 5 Spoon 5 shrimp into each taco shell. Top with lettuce, tomato, avocado and cilantro-lime sour cream. 6 Serve.

Shrimp Tacos with Cilantro-Lime Sour Cream RECIPE:

Ingredients: 20 medium prawns, peeled and deveined 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 corn tortillas oil for frying shredded lettuce diced tomatoes sliced avocado cilantro lime sour cream (recipe follows) For the CILANTRO-LIME SOUR CREAM: 1/4 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 1/4 teaspoon cumin juice and zest from one lime salt to taste
