Finding Your Dream Motor
O, one will ever forget the feeling of owning their first car; of going out for a drive by yourself, in a vehicle that is all your own. The sense of freedom and possibility, of being able to go anywhere, at any time! The comfort, convenience, practicality and freedom afforded by a car is recognised, but this all comes at a cost. For most people in the world, a vehicle is the second-most expensive purchase they will ever make — after buying a home (millionaires with their yachts, Hublot watches and private jets not included!). And buying a car can be a daunting task with the massive amount of choice out there. Do you go for a brand-new car with a warranty and service package? Or, do you go for a used car and perhaps get more for your money in terms of style and prestige? Will a second hand car ultimately cost you more because it’s older and will need more maintenance? And what type of car should you buy? Are you young, carefree and single and yearning for a flashy cabriolet to cruise around town in style; or are you a young married couple just starting a family, with the need for a bigger car with the space and practicality that come with it? Perhaps you already have a large family, and need a
comfortable and practical minivan or seven-seater SUV for the school runs and shopping trips? Maybe you like the outdoor life, and need a capable off-road vehicle to carry you off into the desert and over mountains. There’s also the possibility that you want something that is all of the above – stylish, cool, but also spacious and practical, and able to go anywhere. The good news is that the choice out there is abundant. There is a model of car for practically any requirement and any price range. All you have to do is your research, but the ultimate choice will always come down to your personal preference. Can you see yourself driving this car? To give you some ideas of what’s available, read on for our passenger car guide.

Affordable Luxury
hina’s Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co. (JAC) has appointed Auto-o’s, a division of Bahrain Commercial Services, as their sole distributor for JAC passenger cars in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Auto-o’s has since launched five JAC models. All the sedan models are developed with the concept of ‘affordable luxury’ and feature leather seats, alloy wheels and a sunroof. The main attraction is the JAC J5, a 1.8-litre B class sedan. The car has won the C-NCAP 5 Star Crash Test Rating Award and the CCTV 2011 Annual Compact Passenger Car Award. It was also selected as the most beautiful car in the last ten years by the Pininfarina Design Company in its market segment. The small beauty is the 1.3-litre JAC J3 Turin A class sedan. Designed in Italy, it received the premium compact segment award by the JD Power Global Authoritative Auto Testing & Evaluating organisation and is the only independent brand that has received the highest score in the APEAL index ranking. The JAC Refine seven-seater, with a 2.4-litre engine, is an excellent choice for the modern family. The car is very well appointed, with rotating leather seats, sunroof and
alloy wheels. The 12-seater vans are ideal for staff and cargo transportation needs of any organization. All vehicles come with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty and with a courtesy car made available when the customer’s car is in service. The JAC Showroom is located at Segaya Plaza, in North Sehla. 50 years of experience Founded in 1964, JAC is a comprehensive automaker with a full line-up of independent vehicles. The range includes sedans, MPVs, SRVs, vans, and light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, buses, engines, gearboxes and other key components. JAC has a research and development (R&D) centre in Hefei, China, and set up China’s first overseas R&D center in Turin, Italy, in June 2005. A second centre has since been established in Tokyo, Japan, in October 2006. ■

Fun, Dynamic and Sporty
urther consolidating its status as one of the world’s favourite premium compact cars, MINI yet again demonstrated its ongoing popularity by continuing an impressive series of victories thanks to readers of the automobile magazine Auto, Motor & Sport. The ‘Best Cars 2014’ readers’ vote put MINI well ahead of the rest to win the import ranking in its vehicle category. Of the votes cast, 28.7 per cent went to the British original in the premium small car segment. In the overall ranking in this vehicle category, MINI was also able to secure a place on the winners’ rostrum by finishing third. As in past years, the Oxfordproduced MINI won the import ranking outright. In a vehicle category appropriately entitled Mini Cars, the brand attracted more than twice as many votes as the runner-up. Another model of the brand narrowly missed out on a medal: the MINI Coupé finished fourth in the import ranking with 9.7 per cent of votes. MINI has taken at least one title every year since as long ago as 2001 in the Auto, Motor & Sport readers’ vote. This consistently sustained performance at the polls has gone hand in hand with an ongoing increase in sales figures, which reached a new all-time high
in 2013. More than 305,000 cars of the MINI brand were sold worldwide. The new generation goes on the road in March 2014 with everything it takes to win over new target groups and achieve ongoing success in the ‘Best Cars’ votes around the world. MINI’s success story can be put down to its exciting range of fun, dynamic and sporty models which boast equally high levels of style, comfort and driving enjoyment. Continuing the brand’s tradition of high performance in a compact package are the MINI Cooper, MINI Coupé, MINI Countryman and MINI Clubman models. Each of these models are also available in the more powerful Cooper S variants, and the rangetopping John Cooper Works versions, which represent the very best of MINI’s performance and driving dynamics. ■

An Impressive Tale of Success
i
n Bahrain BYD Auto is distributed exclusively by the Fakhro Motor Company (FMC), a division of Abdullah Yousif Fakhro & Sons. In partnership since 2009, FMC and BYD have maintained a strong presence in the market by serving its customers with excellent models through a state-of-the-art showroom located in Arad. This success has been supported by quality service, attractive warranties and constant availability of the full range of spare parts. However, most important is the brand’s value for money. BYD was established in 1995 as a Chinese high-tech business specialising in the automotive, IT and new energy industries. The company is now the largest supplier of rechargeable batteries in the world. In 2003, BYD entered the automotive business by purchasing the Xi’an Tsinchuan Automobile Company Limited (now BYD Auto Company Limited), and started to develop own-brand automobiles for the Chinese market. BYD has world-class capabilities in vehicle manufacturing, mould research and development, and automobile model development. The company has gradually
consolidated its business structures and developed into the most innovative new brand in China. Automotive products include auto moulds and parts, high-end, medium-end and low-end fuel vehicles, dual-mode electric cars and pure electric cars. Among these are quality fuel-efficient vehicles such as the F3, F5 Suri, F6, F7, G3, M6 and S6 models. Award-winner In recent years BYD Auto has secured a number of high-profile awards for its vehicles, including, in 2012, a ‘leader among indigenous SUVs in terms of quality and performance’ recognition for the S6 from JD Power. BYD was named ‘2013 Crash Test Facility of the Year’ by Automotive Testing Technology International, marking a major milestone for BYD Auto. This award recognised the outstanding results at the test centre, such as the S6 five-star crash test ratings and the F5 Suri’s record crash-test scores from C-NCAP. On 20 January 2014, BYD Chuanfu Wang won the ‘Zayed Future Energy Prize’ for its commitment to environmentally friendly vehicles. ■ 26

This boasts an expansive showroom and service centre to better serve the needs of new and existing customers. Under the umbrella of Al Zayani Investments Group, First Motors is a well-supported dealership that provides outstanding customer service while maintaining a familyfriendly atmosphere. The technologically advanced service centre provides customers with high levels of care and swift service. Hyundai have been making big moves in the automotive industry in recent years, with desirable and value-for-money models. These include the Accent and Elantra compact cars, the Tucson and Santa Fe crossover utility vehicles, and the funky-looking Veloster. The sporty Veloster Turbo model delivers a combination of bold design and exciting driving dynamics. However, the biggest impression is made by their premium line of vehicles which includes the Genesis Sedan and Genesis Coupe. At the top end of the brand’s offering is the full-size luxury sedan, the Centennial, offering
levels of comfort that have significantly raised the profile of the Korean manufacturer. This has been further enhanced by the Centennial Limousine, an extended wheelbase version of the Centennial, offering enhanced levels of luxury for VIPs and executives. Back to the future Hyundai are making a bold step into the world of motorsports with their new i20 WRC, which is competing in the 2014 World Rally Championship. Based on the Hyundai i20 subcompact, the i20 WRC marks a return to WRC for Hyundai after a 10-year absence. Hyundai Motor Company is going places globally, and the investment of First Motors into their facility and customer service reflects this exciting time for the Korean brand. â–

commercial vehicles
T
Fully Loaded!
axis, limousines, fleet cars, vans, minibuses, pickups, buses, coaches, trucks, heavy goods vehicles, articulated lorries… If you thought that the choice of private vehicles was abundant, you can’t even begin to imagine how many commercial vehicles there are out there! For example, when many people think of the Mercedes-Benz brand, they think luxurious premium sedans and coupés for the wealthy. What most forget is that Mercedes is one of the biggest manufacturers of commercial vehicles such as vans and trucks in the world. Everything from refrigerated goods vehicles to fire engines and ambulances are produced by Mercedes, and the same goes for Volvo, Ford, Renault, Peugeot, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi and more. And then there are the brands that solely produce commercial vehicles, of which there are many Scania, Hino, Iveco, MAN, Mack, Kenworth, and so on. Commercial vehicles are vital to a country’s economy and infrastructure. They carry out a thousand tasks over and above simply ferrying people around. Aside from carrying actual goods such as food, construction materials and the like, they tow other vehicles, they clear up rubbish, they move
debris off roads, and they help maintain infrastructure such as electricity lines and street lighting, to name a few. There are so many uses for commercial vehicles that the industry has become somewhat bespoke; most major manufacturers will create vehicles specifically to a customer’s requirements if the order is significant. That’s not to say that many can’t be bought straight from the showroom floor. The choice of minibuses, for example, is staggering: Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Ford, Renault, Volkswagen, Kia, Hyundai, Great Wall and Dongfeng are some (but by no means all) of the brands that produce minibuses, and most of them produce pickup trucks too. When it comes to commercial concerns, the decision is made much less with the heart, as with private vehicles, but much more with the head, or perhaps the wallet. What are the specific requirements of your business? Who is going to give you the best deal on a fleet of vehicles and, afterwards, on servicing and maintenance? Who do you trust to maintain the most reliable vehicles? Everything you need to know to get started can be found on the following pages. 29

car leasing & rental
W
Cost-Effective Motoring
hile having the use of a car is always practical, owning one might not be. Perhaps you’re not in the country long-term, and so don’t want to commit to actually buying a car and having to take out finance to do so. It’s a popular belief that renting a car is simply ‘dead money’, because when you pay rental, you pay money to someone else, as opposed to paying finance on a car, where you’re gradually purchasing an asset. However, this is not always the case. When you take into consideration the interest on the car loan, the maintenance of the car, servicing, tyres, insurance, and in the long term, devaluation of the car, it can turn out that renting a cheap model is ultimately less costly than buying a car yourself. The overriding benefit of longterm car rental is convenience. You don’t have to worry yourself about things like insurance, servicing, tyre replacement and so on — everything except for the fuel is taken care of. This is abundantly clear when the car needs to go in for service and they simply give you another one, instead of you having to go for a day or two without a car while yours is in the garage. It’s also much more convenient if you get into a minor accident.
For a car owner this is a nightmare, as you have to go through all the pain and heartache of dealing with insurance companies, having your car repaired, and being without your car while all this is going on. With a rental, they simply give you another one! The only cost to you is the insurance premium to opt to pay, in case of the accident being your fault. When considering whether to rent or buy, as with anything, take into account your personal circumstances, and carefully consider the financial side of things. Renting might sometimes be the sensible option. If you do choose to rent, then all the choices available in Bahrain can be found on the following pages. ■

Keeping You Covered
he purchase price of a car is only the first financial cost of owning one. You then have to take into consideration annual insurance costs, fuel consumption and, perhaps most importantly, automobile servicing and maintenance. For example, there is no point in stretching your finances to the maximum to buy that premium brand luxury model you’ve always wanted if, the first time you take it in for a service, the prices cripple you. Servicing is one of the main costs of car ownership, but is absolutely vital to the safety, longevity and resale value of your car. Maintaining a strict service history, preferably with the manufacturer for new cars, is essential to protecting yourself from mechanical failure. Anyone who has ever neglected to have their oil levels checked regularly will attest to the cost of massive engine failure, which can often end up with the car being scrapped entirely. And if you haven’t properly maintained the car, it’s possible that the insurance is invalid and any warranties covering the car are void! If it’s a second-hand or older car, maintaining it at the manufacturer’s service centre is not always necessary, as there are many
service centres around town that will carry out the work for a lower cost. However, you should always try to ensure that the parts the garage is using to replace the parts on your car are brands recognised by the manufacturer as suitable. If not, you may find that substandard imitation parts are being used which could fail prematurely, resulting in a breakdown, or worse, an accident. To help you get started, read on for our guide to all the major service centres and workshops around the Kingdom of Bahrain. A quick checklist So, when purchasing a new vehicle, you will want to consider the following issues: l How many kilometres between services are possible with the car? Typically, it used to be 5,000km, but now many models can do 10,000 or more. l Is there a warranty covering major parts’ failure? l How long is the warranty? l What are the service costs, including parts and labour? Many major brands will have a service schedule outlining exactly how much each service will cost under normal use. ■ 47

Getting Us on the Road
n addition to offering access to the latest passenger and commercial vehicles, the Kingdom boasts a host of services that work in tandem with these official distributors. The car dealer might hand you the keys to a new or used vehicle but a lack of available repair and maintenance workshops could leave it off the road more than they might be on it. Moreover, motoring insurance offers the comfort of knowing that, should we have an accident, all the medical bills will be sorted out. Bahrain’s roster of automotive facilities enables the motoring sector to deliver anything that we might imagine we could do with our set of wheels. Without such a supportive infrastructure, the industry would struggle to meet our expectations. When we want our vehicle to be pampered, to look as engaging as ourselves, there’s a grooming centre at hand to spruce up our preferred mode of transport. If we don’t want to drive to a service centre, we can even have the grooming done at our home. Finding the right spare part can often be a troublesome exercise, particularly if we want to make sure the repair workshop is using genuine parts. There’s an endless list of garages willing to help us to get our car back into working order.
Some of us, however, are not satisfied with our cars off-theshelf; we like to tweak them to our own specification. Fortunately we can find customisation shops that will ‘pimp our ride’, even if it’s just for a bright colour not usually found in a new-car showroom. There’s also an array of accessories suppliers to help enhance our car. Getting about Of course, there are times when we do not have our own vehicle. When we are inconvenienced in this manner, we can call upon a taxi or limousine service to get us to where we want to go. When our vehicle breaks down, we can find a tow truck willing to help us out, and a number of specialist roadside assistance options. A set of tyres Our wheels would not run without tyres; the island is well-endowed with quick-fix shops that can change worn-out threads, and a host of other parts, in no time at all. We would not get anywhere, though, without the financing required to acquire our dream machine in the first place. From retail banks to niche financing providers we can arrange a loan package that is tailored to our needs and works within a budget we can afford. 59

axa insurance Providing Peace of Mind
A
ccidents can happen to even the most careful drivers, it’s important to ensure that you’re protected in such event. AXA offers a quick and affordable solution to your car insurance requirements, with four different types of cover. Third party coverage is the absolute minimum required by law, covering damage to another person’s vehicle if you cause an accident. Motor Perfect covers damage to both the other vehicle and your own. Lastly, Motor Executive is a comprehensive insurance, like Motor Perfect, but also provides a replacement car, breakdown recovery, GCCwide cover and more. AXA rewards careful drivers by offering some of the biggest no-claim discounts on the market. Drivers can benefit from up to
50 per cent discounts on their insurance costs if they can prove that they are a claims-free driver. AXA cares about the quality of service, providing its customers with the best in class service such as priority repair service, service guarantees along with the insurance policies. Customers can choose their policy in a fast convenient way through AXA’s call center, online platform and shops located in more than 30 locations. ■
