This exhibition brings together new works by Florence Hutchings and Danny Romeril, celebrating the creativity that emerges through proximity. Partners in life, their distinct artistic practices are united by shared interests in domestic life and its energies, the ways in which spaces are inhabited, and the quiet expressions of humanity that unfold within them. The title Under One Roof stems from the fact that Hutchings and Romeril both live and work within the same home in Margate. Nearly five years ago, the pair made the decision to leave London and establish a space that could accommodate not only their lives together, but also their respective studios. Today, separated only by a corridor, their paintings are made metres apart. As Hutchings reflects, “living and working under one roof has allowed for a continuous dialogue with our practices over the last decade…, the work remains at the centre of our lives.” While their paintings are visually distinct, both artists share a commitment to the image as a starting point for artistic enquiry. Drawing upon art historical references alongside the visual language of everyday life, they approach painting as a process of experimentation, revision, and discovery. Romeril describes how “the real human contact of making is fundamental to the processes that we both share,” emphasising the importance of material, hand-made practices in an increasingly digital world. The works presented in Under One Roof reflect not only two individual artistic voices, but also a creative environment shaped by years of exchange, observation, and mutual support. 4
Together, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter the practices side by side, revealing both their distinctive qualities and the subtle affinities that have developed through years of living and working in proximity. As The Redfern Gallery continues its programme from its new Pall Mall premises, Under One Roof reflects the gallery’s commitment to supporting artists at pivotal moments in their careers and fostering long-standing creative relationships. Bringing together a represented Redfern artist, Florence Hutchings, and Danny Romeril, whose solo exhibition Bric-àBrac was presented by the gallery in 2025, the exhibition marks an exciting new chapter for both artists and gallery alike.

Florence Hutchings Born in Kent, UK, in 1996, Florence Hutchings graduated with First Class Honours from The Slade School of Fine Art, London, in 2019, where she was awarded the Lynn Painter-Stainers Scholarship. The Redfern artist, Hutchings has exhibited internationally, presenting solo exhibitions in London and Seoul, undertaking residencies in Los Angeles, and participating in group exhibitions across Germany, Finland, Taiwan, and China. In 2024, we presented her solo exhibition, Dressing Room, at The Redfern Gallery, showcasing her distinctive approach to colour, pattern, and contemporary still life. Recent projects include a collaboration with Selfridges London and Frieze, with her work displayed in the Selfridges VIP Lounge from October 2024 to April 2025. Her paintings are held in the collection of Charles Saatchi, who exhibited eight large-scale works in the exhibition Kaleidoscope, all of which remain in his collection.

Danny Romeril Born in Jersey, Channel Islands, in 1996, Danny Romeril completed a Foundation Diploma at Highlands College, Jersey, before studying for a BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, London, graduating in 2019. His practice explores the intersections of memory, place, and everyday experience, often drawing inspiration from the spaces and objects that shape contemporary life. In recent years, Romeril has exhibited internationally, presenting solo exhibitions across the United Kingdom and Germany, while participating in group exhibitions in South Korea, establishing him as a distinctive voice in contemporary painting. We were delighted to present Romeril’s solo exhibition Bricà-Brac at The Redfern Gallery, Cork Street, in 2025. Bringing together paintings that transformed familiar objects and collected ephemera into vivid, imaginative compositions, the exhibition further demonstrated his distinctive approach to contemporary still life and visual storytelling. Romeril continues to develop a richly observed body of work that combines careful attention to everyday subjects with an intuitive use of colour, composition, and narrative.
