DRAG CITY PENAL SYSTEM
Sept. 8, 2023
STREET DATE: TITLE: 2xLP
Roll the tape! Roll whatever you got, if you got ‘em! Rock and roll! It’s time to take a trip to Prison. You ready to go Upstate?
Nah...you’re not. Unless...are you ready to set yourself free, no matter what the consequences? Cause if you are, then yeah, you’re ready to party with Prison.
Straight outta Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York City, USA, THE WORLD, Prison is a state of mind, an experience, a loose collective, a band, a jam band and a bunch of psychedelic dudes who aren’t your average bunch of jambanders. All that, all at once, ALL THE TIME. You get what you’re dealing with here?
No...you don’t. The only way to REALLY get it is to go to Prison -–and if you’re not from greater NYC and haven’t showed at any of the shows, here’s your best bet: their breakout album, Upstate. And whatta breakout! So high, you can’t get under it; so wide, you can’t get over it! How wide? Every song has two titles, that’s how wide. And almost everybody sings, like, all the time. That wide.
Sure, you can break down the numbers -– five guys, five songs and four sides of vinyl in one gatefold sleeve -– but that won’t get you Upstate, either. Prison is the sound of everybody in the room figuring out where to go, individually and collectively. As they go through it, the meaning changes, the destination changes, the words mean something different. It’s meaning and no meaning, rising and falling, sinking and flying on the back of something massive cacophonized by three guitars, four vocals, a bass and drums. A lot of information bouncing around and enough time to really get you out of yourself! Take a look at the titles: each one a dichotomous inquest that the assembled Prison-ers march upon with fervor, glee, vengeance -– a whole spectrum of feels and perspectives woven into the jam for you to see.
This’ll take you places!
The Prison population changes with the seasons, and during the season this album was recorded, Sarim Al-Rawi, Mike Fellows, Sam Jayne, Matt Lilly and Paul Major were in Prison. Sarim you might know from Liquor Store, Mike’s made a bunch of scenes and records as Mighty Flashlight, Sam, who passed away in 2020 (R.I.P., brother) was in Love as Laughter –- and Paul Major you know from Endless Boogie, who Matt had roadied for -– and despite being “just a skateboarder who loves music” with no previous experience on the drums, he and Sarim inaugurated the Prison experience, like, seven years ago. Since then, it just fell together and it keeps doing so. A free thing called Prison.
Just go for it! Follow the signs, listen up, have fun. That’s how Prison got Upstate.

This Issue: Tim Putnam from Partisan Records
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I was always drawn to music. I played music, but was never very good at it. So, those who can’t do, teach… and those who can’t teach work in the music industry.
When and where did the label begin?
We started it out of my apartment in Brooklyn, NY in 2006.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
It comes from the Leonard Cohen song, The Partisan.
How has the label changed since it started?
We’ve added more people, and signed more bands, and though the ethos and mission of the label has evolved, the spirit has remained the same.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area?
How is this reflected in your releases?
We have our main offices in Brooklyn and London, though we have people working / satellite offices in LA, Virginia, Berlin, etc… and teams globally throughout the world. So I wouldn’t say our releases are necessarily tied to a specific geographical area. Great music comes from all over, and so do our artists.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
It is a mix.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
I never wanted to be the biggest label. I wanted us to
keep improving what we do, for the artists we do it for. I also wanted the label to be a place where people who share a passion for great art could work, grow, and pursue their own dreams. Ultimately, if I do my job right, I’ll put myself out of a job. I think those ambitions have just become more solidified over the years.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
I wouldn’t because I think everyone is different given our roster, which is eclectic.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
The emergence of digital / streaming.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
It would be called Party-san Records and we’d release music about partying and such.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
As a safe harbor for humans before AI took over.
“A hallucinatory dreamworld”
“Its own, unique sonic palette”
“New beginnings, jarring endings, tentative rebirth, and loving explorations”
“A world unto itself”
“Ragged, yet highly crafted... as immediate as it is mysterious”

In the spring of 1968 a cargo ship was preparing to leave the port of Baltimore with an important shipment of musical instruments. Its final destination was Rio De Janeiro, where the EMSE Exhibition was going to be held. But the ship mysteriously disappeared from the radar. One can only imagine the surprise of the villagers of Cachaço, on the Sao Nicolau island of Cabo Verde, when a few months later they woke up and found a ship stranded in their fields, in the middle of nowhere, 8 km from any coastline.
It was ordered for the instruments to be distributed equally in places that had access to electricity, which placed them mainly in schools. This facilitated the modernisation of local rhythms such as Mornas, Coladeras and the highly danceable music style called Funaná.

Zach Hill and Spencer Seim of Hella were teenage bandmates at the turn of the century. Their 4 piece band was being courted by major labels, and they were on an accelerated trajectory that tragically imploded when their close friend and front man developed a taste for heroin. In a short time, they lost what they had been building throughout their high school years. The two of them carried on, expecting to find other band members and return to a 4 piece lineup.
Their style started to transform, organically attempting to fill the void left by the missing members. Zach was pushing the envelope rhythmically, and Spencer began to simultaneously play both rhythm and melody on the same instrument.
The band name “Hella,” started out as a joke, but its meaning of “a lot” came to fit perfectly. Audiences were enthralled with the raw emotive intensity of Spencer and Zach’s playing. In 2000, they sent out a single demo to their favorite record label, Kill Rock Stars.
It was accepted, and in 2002 Hold Your Horse Is was released under the KRS imprint 5 Rue Christine. For the next 7 years, they toured the world, and produced more than a dozen releases. Their live show was an athletic spectacle, the front row could expect to share their sweat and/or blood.
Spencer and Zach went on hiatus in 2008, briefly emerging to release 2011s critically acclaimed “Tripper.”
Moving forward, 2023 marks the 21st anniversary of HYHI, which is being repressed as a commemorative re-release by KRS, including both the remastered original album and the 3 song demo which landed them their deal with KRS in 2001.

“hristmas with The Smithereens” is more than a Christmas-time cover album. This quartet does an impressive job of channeling the spirt of 1960s rock, and solidly interpreting each memorable tune. The band’s originals add a nice twist to the disc and are written with such ’60s-savviness that without prior knowledge it would

Lead singer Pat DiNizio wraps his husky voice around a smartly selected collection of classic seasonal rockers such as “Run Rudolph Run” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” along with more obscure fare. It’s the latter that makes this such a delight, as the band tears into rugged re-workings of the Ramones’
“Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight),” the Who’s crunchy “Christmas” (from Tommy) and even a rare Beatles track grabbed from the Liverpool band’s ’60s fan club only discs.

Infectious like a pandemic, music follows the path of least resistance, oblivious to national or natural borders: tds bem Global = all too Global. dadá Joãozinho’s debut solo album careens across musical universes like a psychedelic fever-dream in 13 distinct, yet porous movements shoplifting from dub reggae, hip hop, punk, and samba, while inventing a few future styles in the process.
João Rocha moved from Niterói (the city across the bay from Rio de Janeiro) to São Paulo in 2020 with his bandmates from ROSABEGE, the artistic collective he formed with a few hometown friends in 2017. With promotion plans paralyzed by the pandemic, he looked inward, retreating into his alter ego dadá Joãzinho, the “dadá” an homage to a special creature and “zinho” meaning “little.” This provocative persona allowed Rocha to “be open to possibilities, other ways of singing, other sources of courage.”
Moving to the biggest city in South America at the age of 23 during a phase of intense isolation and toxic politics, dadá lost interest in the beautiful and naive Zona Sul (Rio’s southern neighborhood’s famous for inventing the bossa nova) influences channeled by his earlier group ROSABEGE. His new music “needed to feel more intense,” in contrast to the lighter sounds from previous releases. The “Brazilian Utopia” of seventies Música Popular Brasileira “didn’t make sense anymore.” This project needed to reflect the darkness. Bad Brains and Bob Marley at Lee Perry’s Black Ark studio kinda dark, Gilberto Gil and Jards Macalé exiled in rainy London during Brazil’s oppressive military dictatorship dark.
Resisting the darkness, dadá yearned to feel alive, for music that stimulated his body to “move differently.” Playing nearly all the instruments: electric and acoustic guitar, organ, electronic production, drum programming and “other things,” tds bem Global is definitely a solo album, but he made it inspired by and in collaboration with countless musical friends. “I wanted to get people together around the music.”
Unfolding like a genre-agnostic mixtape, the album is front-loaded with irresistible and effortless rhythms, funky, off-kilter and jagged like “Ô Lulu” which rides a dubby acoustic groove peppered by organ stabs, hand drums and glancing guitar ballistics, like if Arthur Russell and Lee Perry co-owned a recording studio.
“Cuidado! (feat. Alceu, Bebé)” introduces dadá’s hip hop chops as the analog synth and drum machine track weaves like a commuter in São Paulo during rush hour - catching every green light, sidestepping sidewalk potholes with a glide in their stride. Hip hop, latin and baile funk flavors jockey like illegal drag racers across the city streets.
Layered with stacked vocals, imposing horn stabs, organic and inorganic beats “VEJA (feat. JOCA)” would be heartbreaking if it weren’t so powerful, like Milton Nascimento in the zone. Dadá chases the darkness into the psychedelic dungeon of “Minha Droga,” a synopated mantra that disintegrates as it unspools.
Spent from the emotionally exhausting four-song sprint that starts the album, “Outro Momento,” is a reverb-laden reprieve from the rhythm nation, sounding like a lost Money Mark bossa nova ditty. “Pai e Mae” is the most obviously Brazilian song on the album, a sweet experimental samba worthy of Tom Zé.
“Desire for freedom was the north star of this record,” dadá insists. He explains that he needed to “feel free about artistic decisions - that I didn’t have to play the instruments in a certain way to sound good, I didn’t have to sing in a certain way to sound good, and I didn’t have to write in a certain way to make sense and reach people’s feelings.”
Birthed amidst a vibrant artistic community fragmented and dislocated through the pandemic, tds bem Global is a message in the bottle blasting from a street-party sub-woofer encouraging others to make their art. “This is just for inspiration as I hear my friends are inspired by it, inspired to take their own paths and take risks on their music or art. This is what I wanted.”

PRE THROUGH POST-MILLENNIUM CURT & SANDY!
These newly discovered unheard compositions of solar euphony are highlighted by Boettcher’s angelic vocals and Salisbury’s catchy, confectionary melodies. A showcase of premium West Coast sunshine pop!
During the summer of 1966, Sandy Salisbury arrived on the Sunset Strip in his VW Bug. Knowing little of the mainland from his childhood home of Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i, he became friends with his next door neighbor, who invited him to a party. At that very same time, Curt Boettcher was an up and coming producer, who the Association chose to produce their first album. Introduced by a mutual friend, and Sandy’s neighbor, Boettcher and Salisbury went on to form the Ballroom, and later on, the Millennium.
Salisbury and Boettcher saved all of their publishing demos – demos that were to become future material for the Millennium and/or Ballroom. Untouched for over 50 years, step back in time to 1967 with this rare collection of southern California sunshine pop!

A FANCY NEW CUT & A PRETTY NEW COLOR!
Another Side of This Life is 13 originally unheard demo recordings of Gram Parsons, country-rock pioneer, former member of the Byrds and founding member of the Flying Burrito Brothers. It features Parsons, singing and playing acoustic guitar, recorded from March 1965 to April 1966 at the home of his Winter Haven, Fla. friend Jim Carlton. Another Side of This Life also features rare photos and a detailed liner essay by noted writer Stanley Booth (The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones).
For those who don’t know, Gram was influenced by such artists as Buck Owens, Don Rich, Albert King, George Jones, Gene Pitney, Van Dyke Parks and even the country pop star, Jim Stafford. Truth is, Stafford was the one who encouraged Gram to play country music. Most of these recordings were made on a splendid Sony 500 reel-to-reel machine that a family friend had brought back from Tokyo.
By March of ‘65 his Harvard career was being supplanted by the lure of the folk music scene of Greenwich Village. He was dropping names like Fred Neil, Dick Weissman and Bob Dylan, and was busy making a name for himself playing the old Night Owl Cafe on West 3rd. He was an urban folkie and damn good at it. Several of the tunes on this CD are the only surviving recordings of Gram’s foray into the Village folk music scene.
Subsequent tunes here document his exploration and love of R&B (“Searchin’” and “Candy Man”), and others provide a glimpse of the incipient stages of his landmark group The International Submarine Band, which many credit as being the archetypal country-rock group.

File Under: Hard Rock, Psych SC 11238 UPC: 0907711123823
Crow blends an alluring mixture of soul, funk, blues, psychedelia, and garage rock into one package. We're sure you'll agree that Crow is a holy grail of heart-poundin' grease-grindin' rock!
This collection compiles all of Crow's studio albums with their original '69-'71 lineup. Crow Music, Crow By Crow and Mosaic are each individually packaged with new liner notes exclusive to this set - all contained in a pizza box style package!
Crow Music gives listeners organ-laden funk wonderment! Combining gritty blues with nasty, hard-charging garage rock, this album includes their Billboard Hot 100 hit "Evil Woman (Don't Play Your Games With Me)." Crow By Crow sees the band really turning up the heat! Their sophomore release spawned two minor hits, the Larry Williams cover “Slow Down” and an original, “Cottage Cheese. Mosaic carried early ‘70s rock to new heights, blending a new mixture of country and blues. With heavy steel pedal on “Watching Can Waste Up The Time,” Mosaic was Crow’s last effort to make it big before vocalist David Wagner departed the group.
AUGUSTUS MULLER (Boy Harsher) –CELLULOSED BODIES (Original Score)
OUT: 01st September 2023
Pre Order Start: 18th July 2023
Augustus Muller (Boy Harsher) teams up again with Four Chambers to release CELLULOSED BODIES, which features two scores, Crash and Automation, through imprint Nude Club Records. Four Chambers is the self-described “project” of experimental pornographer Vex Ashley, filmmaker, photographer, and cultural phenom. Both scores serve as accompaniments to films released by Ashley last year through Four Chambers.
Crash and Automation demonstrate Muller’s mastery of stark, industrial soundscapes. Yet, Muller takes the compositions further - introducing club elements such as ‘nu disco’ tendencies and vocal samples. Thus, he embraces the theme of body meets machine as explored in the visual content of the films.

Crash is an homage to David Cronenberg’s 1996 film of the same name. Both Ashley and Cronenberg explore the eroticism of car accidents, a fetish that feels both mechanical and gory. This violent juxtaposition is Muller’s ultimate inspiration Featured in Crash, “Body and Machine” is a pulsing, synth anthem, exhibiting both synthetic echos and playful plucky highlights. “Perverse Technology” is a groovy and discordant number, where “Sharing a Smoke” has a somber austerity, you can almost see the hands pass across leather seats, shattered glass against sweaty bodies, and open-mouth kisses in the headlights.
Automation experiments came from the isolation brought upon the pandemic, which turned many into digital fiends. Ashley explores the fixation of technological intimacy, with Automation, a sci-fi feeling porn that features a severe computer entity and trapped prey, succumbing to pleasure. Unlike, Crash, Muller uses less “industrial” sounds in Automation, instead favoring synthetic instrumentation “Who is in Control” and “Observation” are chilling examples of this - compositions that feature oblique strings and organ like synthesis. Songs such as “Subdue Yourself”, featuring vocal samples of dominatrix Miss Marilyn, are deftly human, yet “speak” from the perspective of the machine.
Ultimately, both sides of CELLULOSED BODIES play with the mercurial erotic relationship between body and machine. A soundscape that is both haunting and humble, Muller’s follow-up with Four Chambers features some of his best score work.
“You belong to the machine, you are nothing, you are use, you are there to be taken…”
“Cellulosed Bodies (Original Score)” is the second collaboration between Augustus Muller and Four Chambers. In 2020, the Soundtrack “Machine Learning Experiments” was already released as a two-part soundtrack on CD and LP.

i’m so lucky SPIRIT
OF THE BEEHIVE
SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2023
FIRST PRESSING OF SPLATTER VINYL QUANTITY OF 1500
ON PEACH, CREAM, AND TURQUOISE SPLATTER VINYL
SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE have been making thrilling and beguiling “collage rock” for the better part of a decade. Across four albums, they’ve stretched the boundaries of genre with songs that often abruptly contort from inviting hooks to menacing bursts of noise and sample-based chaos. With their new EP i’m so lucky, the Philadelphia trio of Zack Schwartz, Corey Wichlin, and Rivka Ravede close the chapter of 2021’s ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH with four tracks that count among the most con dent, dynamic, and streamlined music of their careers so far. This is the band at its most lucid and emotionally transparent.
Work on i’m so lucky started during a transitional period in the band members’ lives. In the summer of 2022, Schwartz and Rivka ended their romantic relationship after being together for over 10 years. “For the rst three or four months after it ended, it was pretty rough,” says Schwartz. “I don't know if anybody was sure we would continue doing the band. But then we sorted it out slowly and we just all wanted to get back to work.”
As Schwartz was processing the breakup, he and Wichlin took time to nish building their own recording studio inside a Philly vinyl pressing plant. While their last LP had been written and recorded entirely remotely, this new space allowed the band to be in the same room together and esh out the songs in person this January: an experience that proved to be both productive and cathartic.
While SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE splits up writing and vocal duties between their three members, both Schwartz and Ravede penned lyrics that primarily dealt with the dissolution of their romantic partnership. “This past year, the lyrics that I was writing, and I think that Zack was writing too, were about our breakup,” says Ravede. The moody closer “natural devotion 2,” which serves as a sequel to one of their songs from 2016. Underneath the yearning and heartbreak in the track, is a bit of sweetness and understanding, especially when they harmonize, “In the stillness, I’ll remember how you held me when we were together.”
i’m so lucky is the start of a new era for SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE: it’s a marker of their own growth and a hint of what’s yet to come. “This EP feels like a really good transition between ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH and the newer material that we've been working on,” says Wichlin. Between the propulsive and frenetic opener “human debenture” and the dread-inducing “really happening,” which is primarily sung by Wichlin, the entire four-song release feels like it captures all sides of the band. These tracks feel alive and unfussy: a document of a band in control and pushing themselves even further. “We’ve been trying to make some of the newer stu less maximalist and just focus on what we can accomplish live,” says Schwartz. “It’s not that these songs are simpler: They're just di erent and have more space, more room to breathe.”

DAN DEACON SPIDERMAN OF THE RINGS
Standing in a Greyhound Bus station, wearing a Sylvester t-shirt and huge duct-tape-covered glasses, Baltimore ’s Dan Deacon doesn’t invoke the image of a composer to the other bus riders. The two suitcases he loads under the bus, which accompany him from city to city, hold the sweatand-grime-soaked electronics that he uses to craft his raging, maxed-out party music and light show. After 12 tours and 300+ shows in little over 2 years, the gear is beaten and battered, but the show and the energy it produces is anything but.
Dan Deacon has garnered a reputation in the underground as an intense performer and classic showman. The table top full of pedals, a sine wave generator, vocoder and casio blasting through the PA, joined by a makeshift light board with various bulbs and green skull strobe light, make his all out dance-til-you-drop performance a complete experience.
But it isn’t all fancy feet and bouncy beats. Deacon is a classically trained composer with a Masters degree in electro-acoustic composition. He has released 7 albums from 2003 to 2006, but those self-produced recordings do not contain the vocal-based experimental pop that he has fine-tuned in live performance. His latest full length, Spiderman of the Rings is the first album bridging the gap between party performer and genuine composer. A mixture of his live show dance anthems, intricate instrumentals and humorous monologues, Spiderman of the Rings establishes Dan Deacon as a new type of entertainer in the contemporary underground.
“Tapping directly into the great lineage of batshit bubblegum pop, Baltimore art kid Dan Deacon’s Spiderman of the Rings is one of this year’s happiest, catchiest, and weirdest records, repeatedly hitting pleasure centers with track after track of gleeful, electronics-infused hyperpop and candy-coated sound experiments. Plus, you can mosh to it.”

Dee Byrne
Outlines
Dee Byrne is an artist swimming freely in a sea of creati ve possibilities
Her Entropi project established her reputation as a fearless explorer of the interface between composition and improvisation, structure and freedom, driven by a constant urge to create. To reconnect with the roots of that urge, she took a deep dive into her own process, using visual art as a medium to unlock fresh approaches to composition.
The results can be heard on her latest Whirlwind release and on the cover art: Outlines is a set of nine pieces for a specially assembled sexte t of some of the UK's most adventurous and genre-busting musicians. Bassist Olie Brice, drummer Andrew Lisle and piano/ keyboard player Rebecca Nash are all bandleaders, capable of navigating the complexities of Byrne's complex multimo d al compositions while allowing the spontaneity to flow freely: Tom Ward's collection of clarinets and Nick Malcolm's trumpet complete the frontline with Dee's alto sax, spinning tales and painting pictures. "There are a lot of strong, deep musical and pers onal relationships in this band - the sort that can't be fasttracked. It's a real band!"
Outlines is a bold and fully realized work that daringly reimagines the interface between control and freedom, writing and improvisation. The pieces develop naturally from written to free and back again, guided by a group of players in perfect harmony with the music and with each other: challenging and comforting the listener and drawing them deep into Dee Byrne's complex and beautiful sound world

The Electric Chairs included in th eir line-up Henry Padovani who joined the group after being chucked out of a new band called The Police (replaced by Andy Summers).

P.G. Six Murmurs & Whispers
Back from the silence from which P.G. Six always emerges, the new album release Murmurs & Whispers is the first proper P.G. Six album since 2011’s Starry Mind
Time passes slowly, as they’ve been known to say out in the country, and before you know it, there’s a bunch of it behind you. After five releases in the first decade of P.G. Six, it may seem a bit of a surprise to have not heard something new in the past twelve years but a cursory listen to Murmurs & Whispers will answer why, as the deep acoustic focus of the tracks imply an investment of the type of compassion and understanding that takes time and concentrated effort to conjure.
Additionally, Pat Gubler ’s always got a few pots going at once in his ever-expanding musical universe. He’s been active since the mid-90s, first with Memphis Luxure and Tower Recordings, then as P.G. Six, and as a member of Metal Mountains, Wet Tuna, Garcia Peoples and Weeping Bong Band. Additionally, some time was spent making collaborative records with Dan Melchior (in 2019) and Louise Bock (in 2021).
Pat ’s been playing the harp for more years than he’s been in bands, but when he realized that he was writing a set of songs centered around harp compositions, he spent some time in the woodshed with his instrument, a late 80s model Triplett Celtic 34 String Harp (which replaced a lovely Paraguayan harp he’d played for years previously). After the previous P.G. albums of electric band arrangements, he was in a place of writing songs with more silence in them. He ended up playing a lot of the parts himself on Murmurs & Whispers, adding guitar, bass, keyboards, recorder and hurdy gurdy, in addition to his harp and vocals. Clark Griffin and Wednesday Knudson, who Pat plays with in Weeping Bong Band, played and sang a bit themselves, and the record was recorded piece by piece in houses around upstate New York by Mike Fellows
Returning to the quiet acoustic sound of the first couple of P.G. Six albums, Parlor Tricks and Porch Favorites (which has seen a much-needed reissue in the past year after too many years OOP) and The Well of Memory, Murmurs & Whispers is more straightforward in expressing its vision of rural celestial wonder. Bucolic and comfortably lived in, Murmurs & Whispers nonetheless projects the transcendent heart of P.G. Six once again, and as ever, it is magnificent to hear it passing through us.

Mayo Thompson After Math
DC846 Hardcover Book
After Math retails what becomes of the cast of characters introduced in Art, Mystery, joint and severally pursuing an erotic Rinascimento statuette attributed to Antonio Pollaiuolo, a pursuit that lands them in court. On the way, their collective and singular fates are unfolded and accounted for, the consequences of the truth of matters for them are brought to bear and a kind of rough justice is seen to have been done, as is appropriate in rough trade.
“After Math begins where Art, Mystery, the first installment in Mr. Thompson’s two-part novel, left off. The chrome trader Perlat Tile has just witnessed the criminal Pablo Palbon attempt to smuggle a small erotic bronze by Pollaiuolo out of Tirana disguised as a funeral urn. The ensuing trial described in After Math pits the gallerist Ms. Jasmine, who wants to acquire the work legitimately, against the state of Albania, which also claims ownership of it. Written in the impeccable prose that we have come to expect from Mr. Thompson, After Math proves that what happens after a plot is foiled can be just as delightful as the action itself.”

THOMAS VON WACHENFELDT “Mythos of the Forefathers”
Thomas von Wachenfeldt’s “Mythos of the Forefathers” – an ambient dark-folk work in two volumes – is a heartfelt homage to Fädernas gudasaga, a book by Swedish 19th-century scholar and author Viktor Rydberg.
“Mythos of the Forefathers” was created to complement the text in each of the book’s chapters. To capture its overall mood, Thomas combined conventional compositions which adhere to form and structure with unorthodox music that evokes an archaic atmosphere. Drawing from older Nordic folk scales, he utilised traditional instruments like lyre, flutes, drums, and string instruments, while also incorporating various synthesisers to instil a sense of metaphysical wonder.

Thomas von Wachenfeldt is an accomplished Swedish musician, lecturer, and researcher whose career spans over three decades. With a degree in Instrumental and Ensemble Pedagogy and a PhD in Music Education, he has dedicated his career to studying the type of learning that occurs outside of educational institutions, with a focus on Swedish folk music and extreme metal.
Thomas began his music career in the early 1990s as a member of the metal band De Tveksamma before shifting his focus to Swedish folk music. He went on to become a nationally recognised fiddler who has performed and lectured throughout Sweden, England, France, the USA, Finland, and Iceland. THOMAS VON WACHENFELDT “Malleus Clericum”
Thomas von Wachenfeldt’s 2010 album “Malleus Clericum – Hinslåtar, näckvalser och häxdanser” (‘The Clergy Hammer – Devil-songs, spritewaltzes, and witch-dances’) is a solo violin masterpiece consisting of 25 tracks rooted in traditional Swedish folk music and lore.
This album is primarily a listening experience – a flight of the imagination – rather than for dancing. Despite the lone instrument, the compositions are versatile enough and the playing is so spellbinding that it never grows tedious. From the sinister energy of “Djävulspolskan” (‘The Devil's Polska’) to the more melancholic interpretations of ‘Näcklåtar’, which are tunes associated with the mythical water spirit Näcken. Many of these pieces were originally known as ‘bravurlåtar’ (bravura tunes), a term specific to the Swedish musical tradition for songs that showcase not only the fiddler's virtuosity but also his connection to the spirit world.

From the expansive Western style of ‘No Other’ by Gene Clark to the next-door whisper of J.J. Cale’s ‘Naturally’ - DREADFUL FEELINGS is the debut solo album from Jake “Freeman” Dejongh.
Freeman DeJongh is a folk and western songwriter who lives in the mountains of Idaho. The sounds and stories he arranges into harmonies and songs are reflections of the natural spaces within and around him. Freeman is a multi-instrumentalist whose curiosity is focused on interweaving the eerie silver sounds of his pedal steel guitar, the electric sparkles of stratocasters, the wooden hums of old time acoustics with the atmospheric drones of synthesizers. Freeman’s voice comes softly from the heart and he sings to share all of his love and sadness with you. The music he creates roams freely between many traditions of American music including folk, jazz, psychedelic and country and western.

Artists like Jalen Ngonda come around once in a lifetime, so it is our privilege and distinct pleasure to announce the release of his debut album Come Around and Love Me . Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene. His voice, equal parts raw feeling and elegance, exudes confidence and charm—disarming packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. Plans for the album were struck just months before the COVID 19 pandemic shut the world down. Notwithstanding, Jalen eventually made it to Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY where he began writing and recording with the help of producer/arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito (both members of Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires) and a crack team of a-list musicians from the Daptone family. The team skillfully blends heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with motown sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment.
Jalen has been writing songs since he was 14, and his compositions are also very much of these times. He explains, “I love music from the 20th century— I listen to it all the time, but Iʼm in this world and the 21st century. ...to a stranger, Iʼd describe my music as modern soul and R&B, while trying to fit in the Beach Boys and the Beatles somewhere in between.” Come Around and Love Me reveals how he creates a classic approach that is rooted in the sounds of revered pioneers, without falling into imitation–leaving no doubt that Jalen will continue to shine within the superlative, timeless musical tradition that is Daptoneʼs hallmark. Now it's your turn to come around and love one of the finest soul albums of the decade.

STEEP CANYON RANGERS MORNING SHIFT
LP / CD STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 8, 2023
Heralds of the Carolina sound for more than two decades, Steep Canyon Rangers find themselves in a unique seat at the table for their new release, Morning Shift, produced by Darrell Scott (Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris). The GRAMMY®winners are able to tell stories that both honor their roots and expand upon the living art of bluegrass music.
Steep Canyon Rangers recorded their 14th studio album in Bat Cave, NC, at the Hickory Nut Gap Inn, a historical refuge settled near a long-forgotten crossroads of Southern Appalachia. Much like the story of bluegrass music, the conversations surrounding this area are shared, fluid, and greatly affected by a simple matter of perspective. This was the perfect space to feel confident in expanding upon that Carolina sound, the perfect runway to let their well-oiled machine do what it does best: craft stories from the ground up, as a unit.
Over the band’s esteemed career, the three-time GRAMMY® nominees have released 14 studio albums, three collaborative albums with actor and banjoist Steve Martin, been inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, and appeared on some of music’s biggest stages. In 2013, Nobody Knows You won the GRAMMY® Award for Best Bluegrass Album, while 2012’s Rare Bird Alert and 2019’s North Carolina Songbook garnered nominations in the same category.

JOBI RICCIO WHIPLASH
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 8, 2023
“I’ve always felt pulled in a lot of directions,” says Jobi Riccio. “It feels like I exist in all these different worlds, and I can feel each of them tugging at different parts of me.” It makes perfect sense, then, that Riccio’s stunning debut would be called Whiplash. Written over the course of several formative and tumultuous years in Riccio’s late teens and early twenties, the collection is a revelatory coming-of-age story from a writer torn between east and west, intimacy and independence, and her past and future. The Colorado native grapples directly with a variety of topics on the record, including facing past wounds and embracing her queerness, as she bares her truest self with raw candor. She explores her desire for connection and belonging with similar honesty, searching for a place to call home against the backdrop of an ever-evolving identity. Sonically, the album exists between worlds, as well, marrying the classic craftsmanship of Riccio’s songwriting with modern indie-leaning production to forge a lush, expansive sound that feels traditional and experimental all at once.Add it all up and you’ve got an album that embraces its multitudes, a profoundly vulnerable work delivered by an artist navigating the complicated transition into adulthood with remarkable grace and maturity.
HIGHLIGHTS:

20TH ANNIVERSARY REISSUE
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 8, 2023
In honor of its 20th Anniversary, Yep Roc Records is proud to be reissuing Josh Rouse’s 2003 album, 1972. This is the best-selling album in his catalog, which is not surprising, considering it contains some of his most well-loved songs, many of which have become standards in his live set-list. 1972, is a collection of songs that pay homage to the songwriters whose songs were popular on AM radio in the year Josh was born. Fluttering strings, hand claps, flutes and the production of Brad Jones provide the right atmosphere for this incredible batch of songs. Highlights include the single, “Love Vibration”, “James” and “Rise”.
PRESS:
“The most intimate album of the year, and one of the warmest” - Q Magazine “Rouse has evolved his own version of singer-songwriter-soul, heard to best effect in Comeback, the throbbing Love Vibration, and the ambitious Sparrows Over Birmingham. . .” - The Guardian
“The danger with this kind of project is sounding like a ‘70s revue, but Rouse avoids that with his intimate vocal style and quirky songwriting.” - Mojo
“1972 is a delightful album, its 10 songs redolent of the spirit and sound of the era, with understated echoes of period heroes, from Al Green and Marvin Gaye to Neil Young and James Taylor, and an underlying theme of impending change” - The Independent
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Josh Rouse’s best-selling album
• First vinyl pressing in over a decade
• US/UK press campaign to support the reissue
• Radio servicing in US and UK
• Josh Rouse touring to perform the album in its entirety

OVERVIEW
The Folk Implosion, Lou Barlow and John Davis’s recently reactivated musical project, will release Music For KIDS, a deluxe reissue of their original compositions that soundtracked Larry Clark’s and Harmony Korine’s 1995 cult classic film. Nearly 30 years after Kids’ seismic release, Music For KIDS compiles for the first time all of the songs the duo wrote for the movie, newly remastered, including B-sides and previously unreleased tracks. Many will be available on streaming services for the first time, including the band’s most famous song, the surprise Top 40 hit single “Natural One.” The album also adds remixes by UNKLE (James LaValle and DJ Shadow) and Dust Brothers, an instrumental version of “Insinuation.”
When the Zeitgeist-grabbing indie-film Kids was released, the strange, intoxicating magic of the soundtrack album appeared to be the product of some arranged marriage. How did the recalcitrant indie-rock demi-god Lou Barlow of Sebadoh - in his latest incarnation as The Folk Implosion - end up in cahoots with the motormouthed junior-Hollywood wunderkind Harmony Korine?
“Harmony was sort of bombarding me with fan letters,” Barlow remembers. “That was the peak of my popularity with Sebadoh. Then he sent me the script for Kids.” Next thing Barlow knows, this hyper-articulate fanboy is insisting that his scuzzy celluloid visions are about to become a reality.

Barlow knew he’d feel comfortable if he went in on the Kids soundtrack project with John Davis, the multi-instrumentalist with whom he’d formed The Folk Implosion, his latest side project. During the Kids soundtrack sessions, the band had two TV/VCR set-ups in the studio, so they could tailor the music to specific scenes from the film. “We did a lot of jamming in the studio... ‘Natural One’ started out as a jam,” says Barlow. “The working title of the instrumental was originally ‘Dr. Dre’s House.’ I was obsessed with Dr. Dre & Snoop and N.W.A. before that and it was exciting for John and I to finally indulge our love of R&B in our own way.” Despite not actually appearing in the film, the bittersweet dissonance of “Natural One” clearly became the defining sound of the Kids soundtrack –even peaking at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In retrospect, Kids looks like a singular product of the mid-1990s, a period when all manner of heretofore fringe artists were hustled onto the mainstage of American pop culture. You can add The Folk Implosion to the roster of such artists. In terms of the film itself, Barlow still shudders just a little when he thinks about having to listen to “input” from Miramax execs. “But then I realize - we did whatever we fucking wanted and they put it in the movie!”

AL STEWART: songs on the radio
THE COMPLETE U.S. SINGLES 1974-1981 (Limited Edition)
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 8, 2023
The Vietnamese Lunar New Year identifies 2023 as The Year of the Cat…and the timing couldn’t be better! Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to announce a definitive, first-ever singles collection from legendary singer-songwriter Al Stewart. In 1976, Stewart took “Year of the Cat” to the top ten of the Pop and AC charts, inaugurating a run of timeless hits still heard on radio today. Now, for the very first time, each and every one of the British troubadour’s seminal A- and B-sides from his halcyon period has been brought together. Songs on the Radio: The Complete U.S. Singles 1974-1981 brings together 20 tracks which catapulted the artist from folk clubs to the mainstream. Often in collaboration with producer-engineer Alan Parsons, Stewart bridged the gap between FM rock and AM pop. He brought his passion for historical events and flair for lyrical invention to these singles originally issued on the Janus and Arista labels, including “Nostradamus,” “Carol,” “On the Border,” “Midnight Rocks,” “Year of the Cat,” “Song on the Radio,” and the record-breaking, chart-topping “Time Passages.” And the B-sides (“Terminal Eyes,” “Sirens of Titan,” “A Man for All Seasons,” “Merlin’s Time”) are every bit as compelling as the A-sides! Every track is presented in its original U.S. single version (most of which are new to CD and not even included on Stewart’s massive The Admiralty Lights box set) as newly remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision. The deluxe 20-page booklet features Joe Marchese’s extensive interview with Al Stewart as well as rare photos and memorabilia. As a special bonus, the unique U.K. single edit of Al’s signature song “Year of the Cat” is also included. With vivid lyrics, captivating melodies, crisp guitars, and, yes, smooth saxophone, these Songs on the Radio celebrate the remarkable discography of a master musical storyteller. Limited edition of 2500…and they’re gonna go fast!

ROONEY
(Metallic Gold Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 8, 2023
Rooney (named after the principal in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) was formed in high school by singer-songwriter Robert Schwartzman, whose list of celebrity connections is long: brother to actor Jason Schwartzman, cousin to actor Nic Cage and director Sofia Coppola, and nephew of Francis Ford Coppola. But it wasn’t just celebrity that turbocharged Rooney’s rise; songs like “Blueside,” “I’m Shakin’,” and “I’m a Terrible Person” blend power pop with British Invasion and punk influences to create a sort of rock and roll classicism in the best sense of the word. That’s why none other than Johnny Ramone selected them for the Ramones tribute album We’re a Happy Family, and why the band were tabbed to tour with such cult faves as Weezer, The Strokes, and The Donnas (they also appeared as themselves in the first season of The O.C.). That’s also why their 2003 self-titled debut (produced by Jimmy Iovine among others) sold a cool half million copies… but somehow it’s never been out on LP. Our Real Gone release comes in metallic gold vinyl housed inside a jacket with printed inner sleeve. Another one of those early aughts records that’s way, way overdue for wax.

Before Butch Walker produced and/or wrote for such huge acts as (gulp) Pink, Fall Out Boy, Avril Lavigne, Weezer, Green Day, Katy Perry, and (double gulp) Taylor Swift, he fronted this fondlyremembered power pop trio. Hey! Album actually first came out as an independent release in 1998, but the band re-recorded almost half of it when they signed to Elektra, who released it in 1999. The extra TLC proved well worth it, as the record scored a hit with “Freak of the Week” and introduced Walker’s hooky and sardonically self-deprecating songwriting to the masses (it also landed Marvelous 3 fashion spreads for Abercrombie & Fitch and Calvin Klein…they were, as the saying goes, easy on the eyes). This Real Gone reissue marks the FIRST time Hey!Album is making it to music retail on vinyl, and for its debut we’re pressing it pretty in pink vinyl, with a printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics. THE ALBUM
(FOREST GREEN VINYL EDITION)
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 8, 2023
The key to the success of Christopher Guest’s satirical comedies is that, not so deep down, he harbors real affection and deep understanding for the targets of his lampooning. So, while A Mighty Wind lay the hopelessly square excesses and petty jealousies of the early ‘60s folk movement bare for all to see, it also captured the naïve, yes, but charming idealism of the time…and wound up presenting performances that do such a good job of imitating the original recordings that inspired them that sometimes you had to squint pretty hard to see the wink and the nod behind the songs. And the resulting soundtrack album, which, of course, featured Guest’s amazing troupe of character actors (who doubled as songwriters here), including Folksmen Michael McKean and Harry Shearer (playing acoustic versions of the instruments they played in Spinal Tap), Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara as the Ian & Sylviaesque Mitch & Mickey, and Jane Lynch and Parker Posey as part of the New Christy Minstrels parody The New Main Street Singers, stands as a pretty fair folk-pop record in its own right. A Mighty Wind—The Album also includes a couple of tracks not in the film, including The Folksmen’s hilarious rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up” (you haven’t lived till you hear the line “you make a grown man come” sung in threepart folk harmony). Firstever LP reissue, pressed in forest green vinyl!

Two honky tonk platters of newly discovered recordings from the legendary singer-songwriter when she was performing country music under her birth name, Sherry Lee Myers. Recorded by her mother directly from the radio!
You probably know the great Jackie DeShannon as the California-based pop singer who in the 1960s, when America seemed to be coming apart at the seams, proclaimed that “What the World Needs Now Is Love” and urged us all to “Put a Little Love in Your Heart.” A desperate SOS for a society in distress never sounded so sweet. But do you recall, a decade earlier, hearing fifteen-year-old Sharon Lee Myers (on the radio she was “Sherry Lee”) singing hardcore country songs by Patsy Cline, George Jones, Webb Pierce, and the like?
You don’t? Well, then, you will no doubt be surprised to learn that Sherry Lee and Jackie DeShannon are one and the same. Yes, Sharon “Sherry” Lee Myers, born in tiny Hazel, Kentucky, sings like her Southern soul depends on it in these recordings. Just a few years later, she would become an internationally known singer and songwriter with major hits that would transcend genres and decades. This collection contains radio performances by DeShannon from 1956 and 1957 as broadcast on WMRO in Aurora, Illinois. These live-on-the-radio recordings have never been issued before, and they are among the few surviving artifacts from DeShannon’s early career. This album marks the first time her formative years have been extensively documented with her cooperation.

Like Twin City neapolitan ice cream, surf instros, Linda Anderson vocal surf-rock cuts, and John Grizzard's grizzly garage cuts add three splendid flavors all in one sonic carton! On turquoise vinyl!
Whether it was the blistering surf guitar licks of Terry Schmidt on “80 Foot Wave” & “Jonah,” Linda Anderson doing her over-caffeinated Wanda Jackson on “Baby Baby,” or John Grizzard’s gritty, Sonics-esque sound, this band was something special! We’re just glad they never changed their name so we could group the vast variety of gems the Vaqueros cranked out all onto one fantastic, largely unissued album!
Along with Minneapolis greats Gypsy, the Litter, Jokers Wild and many more, the Vaqueros recorded at Kay Bank Studios, a relatively short-lived studio that produced some of the best hits of the 60s. “Liar, Liar” by the Castaways was recorded there, along with the Trashmen’s famed “Surfin’ Bird.” The Vaqueros, though landlocked, produced some of the best surf music during that era, and along with a smattering of upbeat garage rock, it’s surely a record you won’t want to miss.

“Don’t Be Surprised” and their hyper-rare Wal-Mor 45 gave The Satyrs some serious weight in record collecting circles and among garage rock a cionados. The discovery of their lost studio sessions beefed that weight to a metric-shit-ton! There are anthems here; songs of love and loss, hope and disenchantment.

ANJIMILE The King
“If Giver Taker was an album of prayers, The King is an album of curses.” Anjimile won the world over with the clear-eyed honesty of their first record –a meditation on spirituality and liberation. In 2019 he recorded Giver Taker, a collection of songs written while getting sober in Florida. Giver Taker was critically adored – Rolling Stone magazine deemed it one of the best 50 albums of 2020. Since Giver Taker’s release, Anjimile tested new material on the road while opening for artists like Jose Gonzalez, Tune-Yards, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. In his sophomore album, The King, he continues exploring what it means to be a Black trans person in America. The brutally honest reflection of 2020’s deadly summer is less reminiscent of the pink cloud of early sobriety and more rooted in the reality of seeing brutality with clear eyes.
Selling Points
• The King is produced by Grammy & Juno Award winner Shawn Everett
• Anjimile has toured with Jose Gonzalez, Tune-Yards and Hurray for the Riff Raff
• 2018 NPR Tiny Desk Concert contest entry was deemed the best out of Boston
• Previous press support from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Stereogum NPR All Songs Considered, NYLON, Paste, SPIN, The FADER, Grammy.com & more
“Over the past few years, Anjimile remained one of the most captivating performers and artists in the New England music community. Now relocated to North Carolina, Anjimile is becoming the world’s to share”

It was somewhere in remote Alaska that Michael Gold—who records and performs pop–infused psych-rock as Mirror Tree—began to realize that he was officially on the road less traveled. “I was flying around between all these native villages and all these little, muddy gravel air strips in a single-engine Cessna, in and out of snowstorms, and landing on ice-covered runways,” says Gold, who worked for several years as a pilot in the Last Frontier, and currently is based out of Los Angeles, and flies a 737 for a major airline. “Being a musician to me always felt like the path of least resistance a little bit, you know? And when I touched down in a place like Bethel, Alaska, I felt very firmly off of the path of least resistance.”
Until Gold decided to fly away from the world he knew, music was always right there in front of him. Gold’s mother, Sharon Robinson, is a Grammy-winning singer/songwriter who collaborated extensively with the late Leonard Cohen, co-writing some of his classics like “Everybody Knows.” Robinson was close friends with Cohen, and Cohen was Gold’s godfather: “He was definitely a big part of my world growing up, for sure,” Gold explains.
Raised in L.A., Gold was formally trained in classical and jazz piano, and the wonders and possibilities of music seeped into him. He continued pursuing music in college, studying jazz piano at nearby CalArts, where he lived in a barn in the remote town of Val Verde, which was at one point known as the “Black Palm Springs.” Around this time, he joined the indie-disco band Poolside as a keyboardist/vocalist, bouncing around the world on tour with them, as well co-writing songs like the disco-rock-fusion epic “Feel Alright.” (18 million streams on Spotify and counting.)
But the call of the wild never stopped pulling Gold—driven in large part by adventures he would go on as a kid with his dad to places like the Mojave Desert. And, after getting his pilot’s license, he decided to trust his instincts (and some good advice from a fellow pilot) by heading to Alaska. “I basically just bought a plane ticket, and knocked on all of [the local airline services’] doors with my resume in hand,” he laughs. For the first time in years, Gold wasn’t thinking like a musician anymore, and went back to enjoying some of his favorite bands—like Stereolab and Broadcast—solely as a listener. “It just kind of changed the way I heard music,” he explains. “I wasn’t analyzing it for the purpose of learning, for the purpose of becoming a better musician anymore. I was just kind of feeling it.”
But he couldn’t stay away from making music for long. After coming back to L.A., Gold began writing and recording again, and soon teamed up with former Poolside bandmate Filip Nikolic to develop his sound—something like a mishmash of Supertramp and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. When the two were honing in on the vibe they were going for, tapping into Spaghetti Western soundtracks and Tropicália, they realized they would ideally need a Farfisa organ, which Gold conveniently happened to have in storage—but hadn’t ever used before, and wasn’t sure would even work. Sure enough, though, “We plugged it in and it fired right up,” Gold marvels. “And that just became the backbone sound of that whole album.”
With Gold serving as the main writing and performing force of Mirror Tree, and Nikolic producing the set, while co-writing and performing on some tracks as well, Mirror Tree took flight. Gold would demo out songs and at his home studio, and
then bring them to Nikolic’s studio, where they would work together to create grooves worthy of ELO for the chillwave generation. Songs like “300 Miles” and the title track “Mirror Tree” take the vintage Farfisa reverb and twist it into something modern, infused with a non-Western sensibility and a simultaneous Western accessibility. On rippers like “See It Through” and “Echoes Competing,” Gold combines his virtuosic keyboard abilities with earworm choruses and subtle poetics: “Cigarette thrown in the wind,” he sings in his falsetto on the latter track. “Mirror shows the glow / Driving on alone.”
As the project went on, the image of the Mirror Tree stuck with Gold—a metaphor for the way that light and life bounces off of people and things around us. Soon he realized that it was the appropriate title for the album and the band at large—and served as an ethos for everything that brought him to where he is today: “I’m not a super spiritual person, but whenever someone dies, I really get a lot of comfort that they are just kind of being constantly reflected on everyone,” he says. “Their presence—you get to keep it through the people that they affected.”

Tim Kinsella and Jenny Pulse have spent years making thoughtful and unpredictable art, whether musically as Joan of Arc or Spa Moans, or under their given names as writers and visual artists. On Giddy Skelter, their debut album as the unadorned “Tim Kinsella and Jenny Pulse,” they once again take an unexpected turn, but aim for something more direct. They’ve crafted a swirling, past-future, future-past, sorta-rock, collage-rock, melange borne from the confined anxiety of the pandemic. It’s a full-length undeniably of its moment, rich with musical references while radiating a visionary path forward.
To assemble Giddy Skelter, Kinsella and Pulse aggressively culled their tracklist until they had a lean and impactful 11 songs, unlike anything either musician has released before. Opening track “Unblock Obstacles” chugs along on a three-chord riff and dubbed-out drums before venturing into a hypnotic, feedback-filled drone that channels pre-Loveless My Bloody Valentine. “Over and Over” imagines a world where Slowdive or Lush collaborated with Prefuse 73. On “Nena,” one minute features loops of classical piano, the next Spacemen 3-style psychedelic drone, and the next contemporary R&B. The majority of songs on Giddy Skelter foreground Pulse’s yearning, ethereal vocals, giving the music a distinctly feminine overtone.
The title Giddy Skelter alludes to both Gimme Shelter, the infamous documentary about the Rolling Stones’ disastrous Altamont free concert, and the Manson Family’s Helter Skelter scenario. But none of this is an homage to a bygone era. And there’s another dimension to the title: It can be interpreted alchemically, combining two of the most popular songs in rock history — “Gimme Shelter” and “Helter Skelter” — both of which have sinister associations that give them greater gravity. Sometimes the thing that makes great rock n’ roll is the ineffable and the intangible, something you can only describe as alchemy; other times it’s the rigors of process. On Kinsella and Pulse’s Giddy Skelter, it’s both — and it sounds unlike anything else you’ll hear this year.
LP-KRS-767LE CD-KRS-767John Fahey......Proofs & Refutations
DC759 LP
Street Date: September 8, 2023
Recorded in 1995 and 1996, mostly in John Fahey’s room at a Salem, Oregon boardinghouse, the performances on “Proofs and Refutations” prefigure the ornery turn of the page that marked Fahey’s final years, drawing another enigmatic rabbit from his seemingly bottomless musical hat.
Track Listing
All the Rains
F for Fake Morning (Pt. 1) Morning (Pt. 2)
Cloaked in the language of dogma -– what is he proving? refuting? –- this is Fahey dancing a jig in the Duchampian gap, jester cap bells a-jingling. True believers? He’s got something for you: an uncompromising vision that you can sneer at (“guy can’t play anymore and refuses to concede!”) or embrace as evidence of his genius (“the reinventor does it again!”). Skeptics? He’s there with you, too: sending up the fallacy of certitudes altogether. Institutions, systems, accepted wisdoms. Heroes. Alternative facts, indeed.
For LMC 2
Evening, Not Night (Pt. 1)
Evening, Not Night (Pt. 2) Untitled (w/o Rain)
NO EXPORT TO UK/EU, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA/NZ – OFFER PROOFS AND REFUTATIONS TO ALL OTHER TERRITORIES
“Morning” parts 1 and 2 -–the first of 4 recordings in this session that have him wrestling with the ghost of Skip James, perhaps Fahey’s effort to wrench the “bitter, hateful old creep” (his words) back into the grave.
Right out of the gate, Fahey re-materializes before us, somewhere between Oracle of Delphi and Clown Prince at Olympus. Mounting a thundering dialectic from on high, “All the Rains” resembles nothing else in his extensive discography –betraying roots in everything from Dada to Episcopal liturgical chant -– and contains nary a plucked guitar note. You can’t fool him! When the lap steel of yore appears on “F for Fake,” it serves more as soundbed for an extended sequence of vocal improvisations, running the gamut from wordless Bashoian caterwauling to free-form (but decidedly fake) Tuvan, even revealing a burnished falsetto in the process. Fahey takes on a different kind of provocation in the two acoustic guitar-based tracks closing Side 1 -–
Anchoring Side 2 is the two-part “Evening, Not Night,” the second half of his extended cathexis on James (and the latter’s avowed castration complex –- another story for another day, perhaps). Bit of a chill in the air –- where’s the impish Fahey from earlier? Unmistakably working through some psychic wounds here, we might think: the unheimlich rendered in glistening viscera. Or is he playing with our notions of authenticity, of his reputation as troubadour of raw emotional states, a pilgrim of the ominous, the simmering unconscious? These cards are kept decidedly close to the vest. The opening and closing pieces again feature Fahey’s guitar as drone soundbed –- employing distortion, oscillation, and an altogether absurd quotient of reverb to create texture and harmonics that are –- if we wanna go there –- not dissimilar to the sustained tonic clusters of Tibetan singing bowls, the hurdy gurdy, Hindustani classical music, or La Monte freaking Young.
Portions of this material appeared on obscure late ‘90s vinyl in the 7” or double-78 rpm format, but as a “session” it has lain dormant more than a quarter century now. Taken together, we can now see these tracks as secret blueprints to latter-day Fahey provocations, several years prior to records like 1997’s “City of Refuge” and “Womblife.”

Man of Aran Man Of Aran The South Sound Come Wander With Me Tiger King The Currach Boy Vertiginous Spearing The Sunfish Conneely Of The West The North Sound Woman Of Aran It Comes Back Again No Man Is An Archipelago
Friday September 8th, 2023
Rough Trade Records are pleased to announce the reissue of Sea Power’s ‘Man Of Aran’ score, which will see the album released on vinyl for the first time. In 2009 the band, then known as British Sea Power, were commissioned by the Edinburgh Film Festival to create their own soundtrack for the 1934 quasi-documentary, which they premiered by playing along live during a screening at the event. A studio version of the album followed in May the same year, while more screening/performances took place at the BFI in London and at cinemas in Brighton and Sheffield, while events were also staged on a series of islands, including Jersey, the Hebrides and a Norwegian islet in the Arctic Circle.
Charting the activities of fisherman based on a remote outcrop in mouth of Galway Bay in western Ireland, Man Of Aran captured a disappearing way of life as Aran’s inhabitants battled daily against the elements to survive, something that chimed deeply with Sea Power’s own curiosity for the past and their urgent, environmentally-driven concerns for the future. The film is a powerful and provocative dramatised documentary from the late American filmmaker Robert J Flaherty. The film was both celebrated and controversial on its release. The film was created from half a million feet of film shot by Flaherty while living closely with the islanders. But Man Of Aran isn’t a straightforward documentary. The ‘family’ at the centre of the film weren’t related, rather a group of islanders cast as the family unit by Flaherty. The fishing expedition for basking sharks which forms the film’s dramatic heart was based around methods that hadn’t been employed on the Aran Islands for decades. Blending reality and staged elements, Flaherty arrived at a compelling document that captures the elemental power of the island’s past and present. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1935 Venice Film Festival and the eminent film critic Pauline Kael described it as, “The greatest film tribute to man’s struggle against a hostile nature.”
2xLP: RT-499-LP2
The resulting, mainly instrumental score, proved to be a true artistic collaboration that stretched across the decades, earning the group widespread acclaim upon its release, both for the music’s simpatico relationship with the original film and as a stand alone work in its own right. Declared by The Quietus on release as a “perfect symbiosis that should rightly be regarded as something of an understated classic,” Ireland’s Hot Press called it “Stunning... breath-taking” while NME encouraged listeners to “let it all gloriously wash over you.”

“Neural transmissions of crisis on the eve of WEB 3.0”
As the world dices with ecocide and social upheaval, Plattenbau’s 3rd record captures the deranged mental landscape of the “connected” globe, through the postsoviet lens of East Berlin. The album's sonic palette waves between dreampunk and noise pop, with 90s horror soundtrack elements. Urgent, brutal, yet tender, like the band’s fierce live shows. Hence their slogan: "tight, loose, and evil™”.

“Invite Your Eye”
"On their first album as a trio, these jazz-rooted musicians create a luxurious atmosphere drawing from funk, krautrock, and noirish electronica."
Andy Cush / PitchforkWith drummer Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits, John Zorn, Norah Jones) and Dave Harrington (of electronic duo Darkside) guitar/bass/electronics, New York-based Swedish/Turkish saxophonist, composer, club-label owner Ilhan Ersahin captures the vibe of impromptu, cross-pollinating, and heavily grooving late-night jam sessions at Nublu, his “East Village Club where everything goes” (New York Times).
The telepathy and intuition that flows between these three musicians is one that has developed over many years of playing together in different combinations, and on a permanent regular basis at NYC's Nublu, searching and creating together in the moment. What they have come up with has evolved steadily over that time and its current form can be heard to brilliant effect on their debut album “Invite Your Eye..”
The exploratory instrumental space-jazz these gentlemen purvey has many antecedents and influences but perhaps it's best not to cite names and instead let the music speak for itself. This sound and approach comes as naturally to them as breathing, hence the album title which is also the title of the first single “And It Happens Every Day”. "Invite Your Eye" and "Even As You Smile" are the other two teasers set to follow right after the title track before the album as a whole arrives to provide a fuller picture of the magic these three sonic wizards have in store for you.

DeForrest Brown Jr., the writer and producer behind Speaker Music, describes Techxodus as "abstracting Blackness through information overload". On the album he explores the intersection of tech, Blackness and resistance via music taken from his archived live shows, which are then edited, ordered and reassembled in the studio.
The main line of inquiry that feeds into Techxodus is Drexciya, whose myths have informed much recent afrofuturist creativity. DeForrest researches and reimagines the artifacts and stories of Drexciya with new maps, ideas and music, particularly reflecting on the 'Seven Storms', seven albums that came out in quick succession around the death of Drexciya member James Stinson, which seemed to herald Drexciyans in the attack mode.
The artwork by Abu Qadim Haqq, who also created artwork for Drexciya, links the work too, with Deforrest re-orienting charts and timelines familiar from Drexciyan mythology, working up clues to all possible environments where Drexciyans could survive, from the depths of the Atlantic, to oceanic islands or even outer space. Like Sun-Ra, another touchstone of Afrofuturist music, it might be that the Drexciyans wanted to leave the planet they hated. With these elements, DeForrest creates a soundtrack for an alternate history, a sort of sci-fi sonic fiction which threads together the sonic warfare and mythos of the Drexciyan records with ideas and references to Ishmael Reed's 'Mumbo Jumbo', which tracks the story of 'Jes Grew', an audio virus, back to the coastal black cities of Alabama and the American South.
Musically the album is as intense as its inspirations. DeForrest skillfully hand-plays rhythms which amalgamate trap and jazz drumming, but feel at times like orca-song as they pulse through the thick waves of digital sound. Equally the music evokes the ocean, with deep cold drones, or as if it's floating through time like in 'Holosonic Rebellion' which mixes in recordings of African Warriors. Sometimes there is an energetic turbulence as on 'Jes Grew', where punched-in passages of jazz brass bounce against DeForrest's drums to create a weird disassembled jazz. Towards the end the album begins to feel like a spaceship taking off, the rushes of ascending noise and distortion, distant Southern Gospel Vocals feel like music that's leaving earth. Listen to it without the references or feed your imagination; this is a powerful and immersive original work from one of electronic music's most unique creators.

The eclectic and catchy alt-rock outfit Dobbeltgjenger is releasing their fourth studio album, ‘The Twins’. The new record is about the battles that are waged against oneself. This is conceptualized through two internal and rivalling twins. The album reflects a chaotic time in songwriter Vegard Wikne’s life in the aftermaths of a mental breakdown.
The album reflects this process, both musically and lyrically. The music is energetic, manic and colourful, but also dark, smothering and hard. It changes and varies, just as life does when in a chaotic time. Lyrically the album is self reflective, sometimes from the “bad” twin’s point of view and sometimes from a more cohesive one. “Being really mentally unwell can feel like observing yourself and your life from the outside, without anyway of interjecting” Wikne says.

TONY PRICE HIT PIECE
RELEASE DATE: September 8, 2023
Tony Price returns to Telephone Explosion Records with the new Hit Piece LP. The album is his first full-length since his 2022 release, IBM CONTRA, on L.I.E.S. Records, and the followup to the Bail Bonds EP on his Maximum Exposure imprint in May 2023.
In stark contrast to the expansive cybernetics of IBM CONTRA, Hit Piece features 11 dancefloor-ready cuts that are crude, rude, immediate, and unrefined. Eschewing the narrative-driven structures of his previous albums, Tony shifts his focus to the groove, reducing dance music to its rawest textures and core principles.
Reconnecting with the roots of his hometown dance music scene, Tony found massive inspiration in the under-appreciated and under-recognized Toronto house music sound of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
With this project, he unites jackin' house rhythms, early hip-hop bombast, and the hydraulic drive of Motor City funk with a punk rock immediacy and abrasiveness that recalls pre-robot Daft Punk, Todd Terry, Dance Mania, and his L.I.E.S. labelmate Delroy Edwards.
SOMNI GRAVITY RED TRANSPARENT VINYL
UK born, LA based producer and singer/songwriter Somni preps for his third full length album Gravity, filled with unique and melodic songwriting, headnod-inducing rhythms, and swirling electronic production. Seamlessly combining styles in the vein of lofi hip hop, indie folk, and LA beat scene adventurousness. Exploring themes of escapism, stress and anxiety, growing pains, and the passage of time, Gravity is an emotional and sonic rollercoaster filled with intricate and unexpected layers for you to peel back, listen after listen.
“I think this album deep down comes from a place of desperation, of anxiety and stress over life and the passage of time. It’s about getting older, trying to figure out a path to tread and realizing the way that the world is set up and that the cards may be stacked against you It’s about trying to grow as a person and feeling these forces that are at odds with your growth, tugging at you to drop back down into the hole you’ve been inside. That’s where the concept of Gravity comes from; the forces around us and inside of us, that are always pushing against us, and how we can either try to escape these forces or accept the reality of them.” - Somni

Shackleton & Wacław Zimpel In The Cell of Dreams
Following on from their critically acclaimed debut album, the second album from Shackleton / Zimpel represents the culmination of the ecstatic trance urge that has underlined both artists work since they embarked on their singular yet somehow parallel paths
The duo, consisting of electronic music maverick Sam Shackleton and visionary avant folk virtuoso Waclaw Zimpel, sees them link up with one of Indian Carnatic music’s greatest emerging young vocal talents, Siddhartha Belmannu, to bring an album which is equal parts both a meditative exercise and an urge to transcendence whilst thematising both the acceptance of our mortality and the joyous celebration of living
The artists’ intention behind the album was to make a piece of work that was beautiful, deep and moving and which engages with the listener in a direct and honest way. Avant and forward looking music which doesn’t rely on cynical gestures to keep attention or enhance its artistic credentials Put more simply, it is intended to go straight to the heart
The album consists of four long form tracks which eschew the traditional verse and chorus structure in favour of getting lost within the trance There are musical cycles within musical cycles whilst diverse time signatures and phrases exist alongside each other in a manner that is in stark contrast to much of Western music tradition Whilst this may seem demanding for the listener, the artistry of the musicians and Siddhartha’s beautiful and deeply moving vocal, for the most part in his native language Kannada, make for a sublime listening experience.

Public Service Broadcasting today announce This New Noise, the newly remixed and remastered live recording of their acclaimed 2022 BBC Proms show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, released on 8 September 2023 via Test Card Recordings
A celebration of the power of radio written in recognition of the centenary of the BBC, This New Noise saw the band joining forces with the 88 piece BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley. A standout performance from 2022’s BBC Proms, it received 5*s in The Telegraph who called it “a resonant, timely and ultimately touching show”. Founder member J. Willgoose, Esq. remixed the concert from scratch, bringing out even more depth and texture from a multi-layered performance and showing it in a new light.
This New Noise is the second time Public Service Broadcasting have been commissioned for the BBC Proms. In 2019 the band performed an orchestral arrangement of their 2015 studio album The Race for Space with The Multi-Story Orchestra to mark the 50th anniversary of the first manned mission to the Moon. In conjunction with the announcement, the band shares "Broadcasting House"
Public Service Broadcasting have been “teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future” for more than a decade now. 2013’s debut album Inform - Educate - Entertain used archival samples from the British Film Institute as audio-portals to the Battle Of Britain, the summit of Everest and beyond. Two years later, The Race For Space used similar methods to laud the superpowers’ rivalry and heroism in orbit and on the Moon. An indie DIY phenomenon the album has remarkably since achieved gold disc status having sold over 100,000 copies in the UK alone. In 2017, joined by voices including Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield, Every Valley was a moving exploration of community and memory via the rise and fall of the British coal industry
Their most ambitious undertaking yet, Bright Magic brought the listener to Europe’s heart and de facto capital, the cultural and political metropolis that is the ‘Hauptstadt’ of the Federal Republic of Germany – Berlin. Released in late 2021, and debuting at No 2 in the UK album chart, the band’s fourth album was described by Electronic Sound as “their most ambitious, leftfield and majestic work to date, their glorious creative peak, their magnum opus”, DIY said “it flourished at its most calm and erupted at its most fervent” and Clash said it “cemented PSB's reputation as a vital act right at the top of their game”. The album also featured multiple BBC Radio 6 Music A-Listed singles, including “People, Let’s Dance” [ft. EERA] and “Blue Heaven” [ft. Andreya Casablanca]

When Bernie Wilcox and Geoff Brown approached Chris Hewitt in June 1978 about building a stage and providing a PA system for Alexandra Park, Manchester, Chris already had all the hardware booked for the Deeply Vale Festival which was a week later in July 1978 than the date Bernie and Geoff had proposed for the Northern Carnival Against Racism Concert. This then meant that all of the equipment, generators, scaffolding and fencing could simply have the hire period brought forward to cover Alexandra Park and that the costs would be far more reasonable than a completely ‘start from scratch hire’. So it was that about 12 days before Deeply Vale 1978 we started to build a stage and secure compound in Alexandra Park, Manchester. Three days before Buzzcocks were due to play on the Saturday we got a call to ask if Graham Parker and The Rumour could rehearse in the park on the stage on the Thursday night as he was supporting Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton at a festival at Blackbushe Aerodrome on the Saturday and Graham and the Rumour had never played outdoors before. So we finished the stage by Thursday lunchtime for a free concert by Graham Parker in the evening and then Buzzcocks played Alexandra Park Saturday afternoon. Pete Shelley in 2016 –“I know Chris Hewitt obtained a recording of Buzzcocks at Alexandra Park, it would be great fun if it came out as an album”. Pete Shelley 1978 after playing his set at Alexandra Park –“This wasn’t politics it was fun, but the best kind of fun is with people and being with people is politics”. Paul Morley reviewing the concert
“Buzzcocks placed the emphasis on entertainment – a people’s celebration. Arriving on stage with no fixed set they played some pop music… They were a triumph”

On their second album, Swansea Sound present a set of songs as infectious as anything from their previous incarnations. The raw energy of Hue’s old band The Pooh Sticks is still there; the indiepop sugar rush of Amelia’s Heavenly is still as sweet as ever. But these songs are laced with venom and sardonic wit
Swansea Sound have visited this terrain before: their catchy debut single ‘Corporate Indie Band’ was a sly tribute to a music scene that had lost all its authenticity, with its bands in hock to social media managers: corporate puppets play-acting at independence. In ‘Twentieth Century’, Swansea Sound take it a lot further, having a good look at the heroes of their youth – the fabled eras of rock, punk, post-punk, electro futurism – and considering whether the prophets that emerged from those scenes were of any use whatsoever.
In ‘Paradise’, the electric synth-bleeps conjure up the futurism of the 1980s – with all its optimism about a digital nirvana: a nirvana that turned out to consist of Cambridge Analytica, OnlyFans, Spotify and chatrooms populated with incels. The song is as catchy as hell, and might remind you of Magazine. (Swansea Sound don’t think that the Twentieth Century was all bad.) ‘Twentieth Century’, the title track, plays out the egotism of a punk rocker in combat gear, armed with a decent major label deal, singing (with less and less conviction) about revolution: OK, that was grim. But ‘Far Far Away’ is a pretty straightforward love song to Pete Shelley. He was great Other tracks turn their attention to the Twenty First Century: ‘Markin’ It Down’ is a duet between Hue, a vinyl obsessive, and Amelia, the owner of a second-hand record shop, with him searching for bargains amidst the over-supply of Yard Act albums, and her trying to suggest something older that might excite him. ‘Click It And Pay’ is a duet between a harassed home-worker doing some online shopping and the woman in the fulfilment warehouse who’s under pressure to pack his requisites. ‘I Don’t Like Men In Uniform’ (inspired by Hue’s ageing Yorkshire Terrier Kenny – once a fierce beast, now just grouchy), is about those blokes who used to be aggressive enough to fight anyone, but can’t quite find the energy for a scrap these days. Punk’s nearly dead
Final track ‘Pack The Van’ is a surprisingly elegiac pop song, looking right back to early teenage years, wondering if it’s still possible to access the undiluted idealism and excitement of youth. And decides that, yes, that isn’t out of the question..
All these songs are indiepop, if you insist. They are full of earworms and they will make you want to dance. But they are also full of funny, complex, mordant ideas - and maybe that’s why you’ll want to hear them many times over

180g clear blue vinyl, standard sleeve, printed inner-sleeve, download card included ‘Nostalgia’s Glass’ is the eleventh studio album from cult Manchester-born, Berlin-based post-punk group The Underground Youth, due out August 18th on Fuzz Club. “Nostalgia’s Glass looks back at the music of The Underground Youth, forming new songs in a style reminiscent of the band's past”, band leader Craig Dyer writes: “The aim became to create a collection of songs that paid homage to our back catalogue and attempted to dissect not only the positive but the negative elements of nostalgia, primarily the romanticisation of the past – be it the politics of a country, the controversial legacies of film and musical icons or the sentimental idealisation of long dead toxic relationships.”
The Underground Youth was started in 2008 as the creative project of Craig Dyer. The band – Craig now joined by Olya Dyer (Drums), Leonard Kaage (Guitar/Producer) and Samira Zahidi (Bass) – have now released 11 albums and 4 EPs over the years, developing their unique sound which has ranged from cinematic lo-fi psychedelia to a raw and noisy, albeit romantically melancholic, form of post-punk. Shrouded in a dark aesthetic and the imagery of various art film movements, The Underground Youth have established a devoted global following, continuously built upon by their extensive touring schedule through Europe, Asia and North America. DAIISTAR – Good Time
Pressing info for LP: 180g neon orange vinyl, printed inner-sleeve, download card included
'Good Time' is the debut album from Austin, TX noise-pop band DAIISTAR, due out September 8th via Fuzz Club. Creating a narcotic blend of noise and melody, the band takes their inspiration from the neopsychedelic era of the 80s and 90s and pull it into the future with modulating synthesisers, heavy guitars, bouncing bass lines, and spiralling hooks. 'Good Time' was produced by The Black Angels' Alex Maas and engineered by James Petralli of White Denim
Made up of Alex Capistran (guitar/vocals), Nick Cornetti (drums), Misti Hamrick (bass) and Derek Strahan (keys), DAIISTAR formed in the spring of 2020, just weeks before the pandemic started. "To us, these songs were a glimmer of light", Capistran says: "Starting a band at the peak of the pandemic to some might seem ill-timed, but to us it was a way to escape for a moment. There was something to look forward to and we kept our heads in the future. These songs guided us through some dark times and hopefully they can do the same for you. GOOD TIME is here."

Once released it proved an instant viral hit, racking up over 1 million streams. Vona Vella released their debut EP ‘Go Outside Forever,’ in early 2022, which was given a glowing review by none other than Paul Heaton and in January of this year a remix of the title track from the EP, ’Go Outside Forever,’ was featured in the hugely successful NBA2K23 video game
I’ll set the scene – we’re all passed out face-down in the lawn of the first Bush term, scratching our heads after 9/11 and wondering how much more dystopian it’s about to get. Ash hangs in the air as we march toward endless war, and the activities of the post-hippie, post-beat, post-punk, post-jazz, post-industrial, post-experimental bohemian underground flail against the avalanche with a mystic fire you can’t get your arms around, let alone bottle up for consumption. Jars of tears, rockets from another world. Sunburned Hand of the Man was a part of all that.
Sunburned appeared from time to time (occasionally at my invitation) in Western Massachusetts, a mongrel mob from Beantown, inscrutable in the extreme, their music governed by an internal logic, or by no logic, a bearded octopus with spider legs on stilts moonwalking with a limp. I’d see a set, then listen to a recording of it and swear that it was not the music I had witnessed earlier. As far as I can figure, the music actually had a mind of its own. And yet, in a shockingly conflicting truth, I knew in my heart that the music hadn’t changed – I had. These early encounters left me wondering why exactly these people were making this music, and very glad that they were.
They were driven by drums, bass, and guitars, and were obviously in love with groovy riffs, but to call them a rock band seemed even stupider than calling them a jam band. There were hand drums, shruti boxes, and plenty of moaning, but they were far from a hemp-bracelet-clad circle of evolutionary regressives spouting peace and love bullshit. There were weird electronics and some odd costumes once in a while, but it wasn’t anything resembling conceptual theater made for tight-assed, chinstroking academic prudes. They chewed through every leash imaginable, and went bolting off into the wilds of a confounding and glorious wilderness.
Headdress was the group’s first proper vinyl release and, appropriately, clarified absolutely nothing. Now it’s back, nearly old enough to walk into a bar and get toasted on cheap piss, ready to confront and confuse and enrapture and enlighten all over again.
Like Sunburned itself, you catch Headdress already in process. The needle hits the groove and it roars in out of nowhere, an affirmative “OH YEAH” heralding its arrival. The tracks bleed into one another, and the stylistic shifts in the edits can be sudden, but there’s a magic in the editing that mirrors the magic of seeing a live set. It coheres and evaporates at its own pace. Elements emerge, converge, diverge, divulge, and obscure. A riff might erupt, daring the rest of the swarm to hang on it, to join it, or to swirl it. The vocals are summoned sermons, by turns muffled and clear.
The iteration of the band we get here is true old school Sunburned. Over the years an audacious rogue’s gallery of maniacs has passed through the ranks, and it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that at one time there was a relatively tight-knit gallery of maniacs fusing together and forging the group’s sound and spirit. Most notable among this crew is the recently-departed Marc Orleans, to whom this reissue is dedicated. His bombastically loud, searing guitar leads were a defining feature of this era, and this record presents startling examples of the profound, crazed ecstasy he was capable of conjuring.
This reissue offers a snapshot in time, neon time, mylar time, slipping time, dripping time, stepping hither and yon, feet growing and vanishing like time with each welltimed step. Freedom isn’t real, but it’s everywhere, and we’re fools if we don’t try to grasp it during the cosmic windows when it makes itself briefly available.
