With apologies to groups like The Meters, Bar-Kays, and Average White Band, when it comes to all-time great instrumental R&B bands, for most folks Booker T. & the MG’s represent the gold standard. And with good reason…or, actually reasons! First of all, as the house band of the hallowed Stax label and studio, The MG’s pretty much invented the sound of Southern soul, playing on records by everybody from Otis Redding to Wilson Pickett to Carla Thomas. Second, on their own as Booker T & the MG’s, they came up with some of the most indelible instrumental jams of all time, including—but by no means limited to!—“Green Onions.” And, third, each member of the band was an absolute monster on their instrument, to this day revered and copied by untold numbers of musicians. Indeed, by the time the mid ‘60s rolled around, bands on both sides of the Atlantic wanted to sound like Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, Jr, and Lewie Steinberg (replaced about halfway through this collection by the great Donald “Duck” Dunn). And what was that sound? Well, a typical MG’s tune started from the bottom-up, resting on the rock-solid drumbeat of Jackson and the in-thepocket bass work of Steinberg and, later, Dunn, over which keyboardist Jones and guitarist Cropper traded slinky and/or stinging licks. But these cats weren’t just riffhappy groove masters; Jones basically codified the classic Hammond organ sound and Cropper’s guitar tone remains the Holy Grail of anyone who’s ever picked up a Fender Telecaster. Together, they recorded 49 single sides for Stax under the name of Booker T. & the MG’s, and you’ll find the first 29 (yes, 29!) of ‘em right here, released on a single CD or double-LP pressed in blue vinyl and limited to 1000 copies. As with all of our singles collections, we have very carefully vetted these songs to make sure they are the correct mono single versions, with mastering by Dan Hersch at d2 Mastering, and tape research and sourcing by Mike Johnson and Aaron Kannowski with help from Bill Inglot. Ed Osborne has contributed detailed notes and discographical information, too, and the set’s produced by Real Gone’s own Gordon Anderson. As for the music, it pretty much speaks for itself: 29 songs, 15 of which reached the charts, including, along with “Green Onions,” such classics as “Boot-Leg,” “Hip Hug-Her,” and “My Sweet Potato.” Get ready to get into the groove and stay there for a nice, long while!

We’ve reissued a lot of “cult” albums at Real Gone Music. But of all the releases we’ve put out, this is the cult-iest of them all. That’s because it’s actually an occult album, the first record to bring Satanic themes to rock music. The upside down crosses, the “devil’s horns” hand’s signs that are commonplace with metal bands both past and present…they all started here. Coven even had a bassist named Oz Osborne…and the first track on the album was entitled “Black Sabbath,” for, er, heaven’s sake! So there’s no question that this 1969 album dealt with the devil first. While subsequent bands exploited demonic imagery and occult themes for commercial success and sensationalism, Coven were true (un)believers. Thus, the last track on the album, “Satanic Mass,” is a full Black Mass, the only recording of its kind, while the double-gatefold album jacket—which we have faithfully reproduced—not only displays a picture of Coven’s lead vocalist, Jinx Dawson, splayed naked across a ritualistic altar surrounded by hooded members of the band and its associates, but also includes the full text of a Black Mass along with lyrics to the unabashedly Satanworshipping songs. In the end, Witchcraft was a little too far ahead of its time; coming out in 1969, at the height of hysteria about Satanism whipped up by the Manson Family murders, the album generated a firestorm of reaction, which turned into an inferno when Manson himself was photographed holding a copy of the record. The album was recalled, Dunwich withdrew support, and the band bounced around a couple of other labels before going on hiatus in 1976. But Coven remains a crucial, if underrecognized, influence on hard rock and heavy metal. Now, Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls is reincarnated with full artwork intact and a limited “hellfire” vinyl pressing. Whether approached as a cultural artifact, a totemic fetish, a camp classic, or just really cool music, it will cast a spell on you.

COVEN BLOOD ON THE SNOW
(Limited Red & White “Blood on the Snow” Vinyl Edition) We caused a stir of supernatural proportions last year when we reissued Coven’s 1969 debut album Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls, complete with nude sacrificial centerfold and instructions for a Black Mass. And Blood on the Snow, which displays a violin-playing devil on the cover and pictures of some sort of weird occult ritual on the gatefold spread, promises more of the same. But, in the sure hands of Who producer Shel Talmy, this 1974 release on the Buddah label presents a much milder, even, dare we say, benevolent version of the band that launched the whole genre of Satanic rock. Part of this was no doubt due to Coven’s having gotten a taste of mass chart success in the early part of the decade with their version of “One Tin Soldier” that was featured in the Billy Jack movie. And, while true unbeliever and lead singer Jinx Dawson—one of the most unjustly neglected vocalists of her era—is still around, guitarist Christopher Neilsen brings a lighter songwriting touch to the material, former guitarist Jim Donlinger having left to further pursue his interest in the macabre with the band H.P. Lovecraft. That’s not to say that Blood on the Snow is a pop record; “Don’t Call Me” almost sounds like Raw Power Stooges, their cover of Alan O’Day’s “Easy Evil” is the toughest ever recorded, and the title song simply blazes. But only “Blue, Blue Ships,” with its melancholy take on mortality, would qualify as a song about the occult, and numbers like “This Song’s for All You Children” and “Lady-O” wouldn’t be out of place on a Fleetwood Mac or Jefferson Starship album, thanks in part to Talmy’s orchestral production touches. In short, this was a band far more talented and versatile than Buddah knew how to handle; hence this was the last Coven album to emerge for 40 years. But it’s a hotly pursued one at that; and for its first-ever LP reissue, we’ve pressed up a white and red “Blood on the Snow” vinyl edition limited to 1200 copies, housed inside a gatefold jacket with an inner sleeve featuring lyrics!

Some marketing whiz in the front office has an idea to cash in on a fad by releasing “product” as quickly as possible. But the artist(s) hired for the project decide not to phone it in, and take things in a direction all their own. The result: a weirdly wonderful collision of the commercial and creative prized by crate diggers across the globe. Such an album is Milton Delugg & His Orchestra’s Music for Monsters, Munsters, Mummies & Other TV Fiends. Recorded in 1964, at a time when commercial TV saw no less than three comedy series (The Munsters, The Addams Family, and Bewitched) featuring supernatural/ horror themes make their network premieres, this album—which, last time we looked, commands some very tidy sums online—made sure to touch all its TV bases by including the themes to all three shows mentioned above, plus The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and The Outer Limits. But, in the hands of one Milton Delugg and His Orchestra, this album takes an unexpected turn from the disposable to the delightful. That’s because Delugg was literally made for this job; he composed “Hooray for Santa Claus,” the catchy theme song to the Grade Z film Santa Claus Conquers the Martians the same year this album was made before becoming Musical Director for Chuck Barris’s various game shows, most notably The Gong Show leading his “Band with a Thug.” And, to top it all off, he produced Buddy Holly’s 1958 single “Rave On!” You’ll hear all of those influences here and more, not just on Delugg’s versions of TV themes—“The Munsters Theme” sports a great, Duane Eddystyle guitar line—but on the seven originals he penned for the project. Did you know Herman, Grandpa, Lily, Marilyn and Eddie Munster doubled as a rock and roll band?! Well, despite the subhead on the album proclaiming them as “The Newest Teen-Age Singing Group,” they didn’t…but that didn’t stop the label execs at Decca Records from trying to cash in on the new CBS hit TV show! Veteran producers Joe Hooven and Hal Winn had the good sense to hire the Wrecking Crew (most notably Glen Campbell and Leon Russell) to play this surf-tinged set of songs, and brought in The Go-Go’s (nope, not those Go-Go’s, they were just out of diapers…this was a male vocal trio that cut one LP for RCA back in 1964, the same year this record came out) to sing the lyrics to such gems as “You Created a Monster” and “Make It Go Away.” The whole thing is a hoot, and a highly collectible hoot at that—original copies of this album command “monstrous” sums! Without its music, Love Actually wouldn’t work at all. I know—because I saw the film without the music, and it was a shocker. So this soundtrack in your hands isn’t a few songs stuck together; it’s the life and soul of the film. Some of the songs were there from the very beginning. When first I decided to write about Christmas, I knew that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” would be in the film. And Joni Mitchell’s extraordinary rerecording of “Both Sides Now”—the words of youth rediscovered in her fifties—was always the core of Emma Thompson’s whole story. But other songs were more random, lucky finds. Our music editor, Mike Price, put Eva Cassidy’s angelic version of Christine McVie’s “Songbird” over the Sarah & Karl scene—and suddenly it made sense. I played Hugh Grant seven records to dance to, he chose “Jump” and now I can’t imagine another song. One evening, I started to go through my record collection to find a song for the end and got called to dinner when I’d just reached “B”—so the only song I took into the edit the next day was “God Only Knows”—and it never changed. Kiefer is a keyboardist first and foremost, taught to play the blues by his father before he got to primary school. He started producing his own beats at around age twelve, and eventually went on to study under renowned jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell at UCLA’s Jazz Studies program. There, he started to toy with the synergy between the jazz piano he studied and the beats he created outside of school. While his peers performed over live instrumentation, Kiefer produced electronic beats completely free from sampled melodic material or drum breaks. Bridges and Superbloom are one cohesive project - Superbloom is just an expansion of the "Bridges" sound. Superbloom's tracks are meant to be very active. The first five tracks are invigorating, while track 6 & 7 act as a grand exhale for the Superbloom EP. Superbloom and Bridges was an opportunity to take his sound in new directions. “My dad always told me any time you work on something, make it better than last time,” he says, “I want to approach things in a new and updated way.” Put simply, Kiefer hopes his music and live shows can help inspire joy. “It’s comforting to see someone who is truly dedicated to making beautiful stuff,” he says, “I want people to see someone genuinely pour their heart into something.”

He was born Booker T Washington White, and the man we came to know as Bukka White. Born in 1909, Booker was the son of a railroad worker. While serving time for assault, he recorded for the folklorist John Lomax. The few songs he recorded around this time became his most well known: “Shake ‘Em On Down,” and “Po’ Boy.” His 1937 version of the oft-recorded song “Shake ‘Em on Down,” is considered definitive; it became a hit while White was serving time in Mississippi State Penitentiary, commonly known as Parchman Farm. He wrote about his experience there in “Parchman Farm Blues,” which was released in 1940. Bob Dylan covered his song “Fixin’ to Die Blues,” which aided a “rediscovery” of White in 1963 by guitarist John Fahey and Ed Denson, which propelled him into the folk revival of the 1960s. Led Zeppelin’s “Hats Off to (Roy) Harper,” on their album Led Zeppelin III was based in large part on “Shake ‘Em on Down,” while “Custard Pie,” on Physical Graffiti, also references “Shake ‘Em on Down.” It was also brilliantly covered by the North Mississippi Allstars. “Parchman Farm Blues” was recorded by Jeff Buckley, issued posthumously on the bonus disc of Grace. Disc 1 features White’s 1960’s revivalist recordings produced by John Fahey, while Disc 2 presents an entire White concert from Bremen, Germany - never released in North America on any format and unavailable for the last 40 years.

He’s not calling it an album but the latest full length project from London’s Oscar Scheller, is HTTP404. Since his debut full length, Cut & Paste (WEBB460LP and CD), Oscar has been very busy working as a writer and producer for other pop acts (Mae Muller, Lily Allen etc). And as ably demonstrated by the two singles (“1UP” with Sarah Bonito and “Runaway” with Tiffi) that have come since that debut, he has very clearly made a huge leap as both a songwriter and producer. HTTP404 is a collection of 11 jaw-dropping pop songs, all bar one produced or co-produced by Oscar himself, and all bar one collaborations with other musicians he has been working with or who he has been excited by on the scene (including Lily Allen, PAWWS, Vera Hotsauce, Jevon and Havelock, amongst others). The set of songs focuses on the importance of searching for something that no longer exists, not finding what you’re looking for. It’s philosophical & existential in places, but there’s an underlying message across the board to stop thinking about things so much & just start living! Gone are the guitars that characterized his earlier sound and now in their place we find synths, samples and programming that pull the work of Oscar Scheller right into the zeitgeist. Fresh off his acclaimed solo album Fountain Fire (DC734, out earlier this year), Bill MacKay is back to harmonic atom-splitting with all six of his guitar strings in this new collaboration with cellist Katinka Kleijn, STIR. Bill is an avid collaborator (see DC688, SpiderBeetleBee, with Ryley Walker), and over the past seven years, he and Katinka have used live performance to build their chemistry into a surprising, organic density, with sharply-etched colors drawn from avant-rock, folk, jazz classical and experimental music. It is at once an unlikely and perfect pairing as both musicians are known not only for their chops, but for their creativity, curiosity and range. Together they form a fluid, intuitive, dialogical and improvisational pair. Stir is centered on a series of MacKay's compositions, partially inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel Steppenwolf. You can try following along with the book, but don’t expect any Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz-type moments. This is a concept unhindered by the conceptual, but it has a beautiful through-line to its organization. The repetition and expansion of themes borrows from the chamber music world, while the distortions, free play, and edge of much of the work clearly draws from the duo’s friends in noise and the avant-garde. Were Jim Hendrix, Henry Flynt, John Cage, PJ Harvey, Duke Ellington, Eric Satie or Body/Head to appear in your mind as this disc was spun in your house - no one would less than inspired! Katinka Kleijn is cellist and veteran of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and International Contemporary Ensemble among many other groups. She hails from The Netherlands, and has lived in Chicago since 1995. Both musicians have appeared as guests on numerous records, and tour domestically and internationally, when they are not playing concerts in Chicago. Stir is their first full-length record together. Long before the indie rock vampires got hip to the jam, Wet Tuna's Matt Valentine and PG Six (Pat Gubler) were twisting folk-blues, the avant garde, west coast and Swedish psychedelia into a fat one in the beloved underground unit Tower Recordings. Tower's journey ended some time ago but MV and PG Six found new paths—Matt mostly around the MV & EE tree and Pat's solo songwriter sojourns. Sweet Williams on new album Where Does The Time Come From is one Thomas House, a UK guitarist and songwriter whose bands have a habit of dissolving. This latest LP contains ten post-punk infused songs of an almost brutalist nature, House's music in its purest form, performed almost entirely by himself. The first single is 'Ride A Gold Snail', a rumbling postrock juggernaut that sets a backwards drum beat to a filthy, holding pattern bassline, with guitar amps on the verge of burning out and elliptical, elusive lyrics. "It's probably my most romantic song," says House. In 2016, the Sweet Williams line-up responsible for the open, organic sound of that year's album 'Please Let Me Sleep On Your Tonight' dissolved in a potent formula of work, babies, babies and work. Armed with a clutch of new songs and no time to break in a new band, House repaired to the heart of rural Sussex with trusted producer Ben Hampson and set to work. The resulting recordings reflected House's fascination with, and horror for, busted mechanics; in place of the live band's fluid, entropic interplay, structured patterns lurch and correct, a crowbar jammed in every gear.. These compositions could be seen as the culmination of twenty-plus years playing in countless bands, from the incandescent fury of Charlottefield, to the discipline honed on guitar in postpunk stalwarts Joeyfat, to a newfound confidence in vocal texture and melody in Haress. Lyrical themes cover love, dread, betrayal, bliss, injustice, death, sex, the end of the world. After the bracing opening two tracks, the celebratory 'Stop It I'm Killing You' and its stinging hangover 'Stunt Freeze', the album proceeds to its dusky heart. By the time of 'Two Golden Sisters', House's hands barely brush the strings of his guitar as he croons to the memory of a long lost love. 'Facing East', a song whose definitive reading eluded House for more than a decade, sets a misheard conversation to a cyclical chime and an unexpected, explosive blossom. “Recognise Me (I’m An African)” see’s Rodney reconnect on a deeper level with his West-Indian heritage as a second-generation immigrant. Referencing Ghanaian politician and revolutionary Kwame Nkrumah, Rodney explores themes of identity and the ideology of pan-Africanism (the idea that the destiny of all people of African descent, depends on the fate of the continent of Africa). “I consider myself an African, I’m feeling more African as I’m getting older. olde It affects me and my mindset”. “Dive / 4AM” is the latest outing from San Francisco Bay Area-based six-piece, The Seshen. The 7” outlines the steps the group has made since their critically acclaimed sophomore album in 2016, both as a band and as individuals. “Since ‘Flames & Figures', a lot has been taking place both internally and externally. We were on tour for the last album when Trump was elected. There was an intense heaviness, a familiar one, one that extends generations and it just sunk in even further”, singer/lyricist Lalin St. Juste explains. Side A opens with distorted four-to-the-floor chomper, “Dive”. Aggressive yet danceable, gritty but somehow unstoppable, “Dive” is inspired the profound need for change, catalysed through the somnambulant Larry Heard-esque bassline meshed to the warped tones of Lalin’s vocals. “The path towards my power, my strength, being okay with being unapologetic is just starting. I’m reclaiming what I have lost, reclaiming what has been passed down to me. The song is about the ground beginning to shake”, Lalin preaches. While in contrast on side B, “4AM” untethers the listener by exploring a sense of spaciousness, flourishing the sparseness, distracting with moving snippets of delicate production. Lyrically tackling the insomniacs waking nightmare, “4AM” is about the witching hour, battling against oneself. Bonnie Baxter is a member of Brooklyn-based trio Kill Alters. fuses abstracted electronic collage elements and high BPM rhythmic structures with bursts of unhinged vocal input. The album follows 2018’s Ask Me How Satan Started (HAUSMO 82), and finds Baxter fleshing out her signature strain of claustrophobic production that finds some trace of warped glee within the cathartic release of industrial noise composition. As a member of Brooklyn mutant “rock” trio / Hausu Mountain family members Kill Alters along with Nicos Kennedy and Hisham Bharoocha (Boredoms, ex-Lightning Bolt, ex-Black Dice), Baxter splits open the already dense spread of sound with freewheeling vocalizations that range from demonic snarls to childlike chants to curdled, sugary melodies. Within the context of her solo recordings, all these distinct personalities and more blend together into varied lattices of fragmented voice that cycle through contrasting moods and deliveries. Any given track might evoke the yelped timbres of a cheerleading routine, the biting sarcasm of a shit-talking session among friends (see the central refrain of “NO DICC”: “I don’t want your diccccc”), the hushed whispers of a lullaby, or the harsh wails of primal scream therapy. Baxter couples her developing sense of vocal experimentation with some of her most outré beat ideas to date, sculpting kinetic productions that bounce over drippy drum voices, rapid hi-hat patterns, and chunks of giant bass debris. Her tracks draw inspiration from the cyborg grind of friends and collaborators Machine Girl, the light-speed grids of juke and footwork, and the ecstatic percussive bliss of Yoshimio-led projects like OOIOO. Bonnie Baxter populates her productions with an overwhelming level of detail that seems to trip and spill out of the speaker while still maintaining a rhythmic backbone and sense of groove. Blasts of junkyard drums and distorted noise formats careen into more traditional beat structures from the industrial or electro traditions. Passages of near-gabber kick drum madness give way to zoned out breakdowns animated by melting synth squiggles and “drum” patches formed from her churned up vocal lines. Stepping beyond her typically hardware/drum machinefocused compositions to explore producing on an iPad prods Baxter into genre-melding arrangements stuffed with instant transitions between styles. At the heart of her musical practice, one can sense that Bonnie Baxter has fun toying with conventions and giving voice to her inner urges in sonic forms that match her own mischievous, joyful energy.

The three EPs will be available as one full length release titled All Encores featuring 80 minutes of music on 18 October, to follow his masterful 2018 album All Melody. Whilst Encores 1 focused on an acoustic pallet of sounds with solo piano and harmonium at the core, and Encores 2 explored more ambient landscapes, now Encores 3 sees Nils expand on the percussive and electronic elements in his work. “The idea behind All Encores is one we had from before All Melody; to separate releases each with their own distinct musical style and theme, perhaps even as a triple album. But All Melody became larger than itself and took over any initial concepts. I think the idea of All Encores is like musical islands that compliment All Melody.” Moulded during All Melody but refined by his live performances, All Encores is testament to Nils’ exceptional ability to craft his art on stage. Artificially Intelligent which showcases his ‘mad professor’ organ, and All Armed which has been a live favourite for some time, appearing on set lists since 2015, are now available to hear on record for the very first time. The final track of Encores 3, as well as the whole series, Amirador, perhaps aptly nods to the Spanish word for ‘lookout’ and hints at what’s to come. Welcome to the sound of Garcia Peoples at full speed. Without losing a ray of sunshine or a drop of dew, One Step Behind is the first major statement by the malleable Brooklyn sextet. The 32-minute title cut highlights the twin guitars and songwriting of Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki and, instead of pointing itself towards one possible future for the band, just zaps itself square into the thick of it. Encompassing a range of moods and scenes in one flowing arc (plus a coda), it’s less a piece of music to listen to than it is a zone to occupy, a portal for all open-eared heads. The band’s third album in a year-and-a-half, One Step Behind is unquestionably their boldest yet. Formed in New Jersey by Malach and Arakaki, the band took a few years to find their flying shape, solidifying into a lineup with Danny’s brother Cesar on drums and Derek Spaldo on bass by mid-2016. Ramping up their acceleration around the time of their 2018 Cosmic Cash debut, they’ve blasted through residencies and new songs and sessions and collaborations, leaving a trail of live tapes in their wake, along with the crashing power of 2019’s Natural Facts follow-up, and scaling ever upwards. Recorded and assembled at Black Dirt Studio with Jason Meagher (Jack Rose, Steve Gunn), “One Step Behind”--and One Step Behind--opens with the newest auxiliary Garcia: Tom’s father Bob Malach. A veteran sax player with a CV that includes Stevie Wonder, Madonna, Miles Davis, the Asbury Jukes, Arto Lindsay, Barbra Streisand, and Steve Miller to (seriously) name just a few, the elder Malach contributes twin overdubbed saxophone parts, channeling Terry Riley--soon joined by Tom and Danny in interlocking guitar bliss--before blowing it out at the end. In between comes Danny’s floating song, more jams, and wild organ by Pat Gubler, ascending from auxiliary collaborator to full-fledged Garcia, and providing a linkage from the Garcias’ millennial jams to the freaky lo-fi sound scenes of ‘90s Massachusetts. It’s not quite the literal flip, since the title piece sprawls over onto the back of the LP, but the second song on the album--only eight minutes--is another new move for Garcia Peoples, too. Written and sung by bassist Derek Spaldo, moving over to piano for the first time, “Heart and Soul” is a more contemplative place for the band. Appearing on record for the first time is Andy Cush, who occupies the bass chair for most of the band’s shows, Spaldo now dwelling outside of regular gig range. Intending to record Spaldo’s gentle song as a short postscript, “Heart and Soul” grew into its own soundspace, as Garcia Peoples’ songs sometimes do. Gubler plays flute, and they go full glow. With a stash of live recordings accumulating at the Live Music Archive, Garcia Peoples’ music is very much a living entity. Since the release of their previous two albums, songs have started to expand, jam suites have grown, and experiments have been undertaken. Probably something else new and wonderful and weird has happened in the Garciaverse since I wrote this. Whether or not you thought you knew Garcia Peoples’ music, One Step Behind is something new and beautiful, for new heads and old. Determination Danish duo Bremer/McCoy—Morten McCoy keyboards and loops and Jonathan Bremer acoustic bass—make music that is a meditative and intense blend of jazz and dub created entirely via analog process. No computers involved; they record everything straight to tape in their own studio. These two childhood friends tour with their own soundsystem, originally left over from a dub band they were both in, to ensure adequate depth in the lower frequencies. Recorded over two cold and windy Copenhagen weeks in sessions plagued by malfunctioning gear, the band overcame these setbacks and recorded some of the clearest melodies and conceptual passages they have put to tape. In pieces such as “Åben bog” they draw on Danish folk music as a base from which they work from more classical composition to a free-form and trouble-free place. The album’s closing track, “Determination,” stays true to its title and is a song without hesitation, finishing what the band sets out to do.

• Limited edition INDIE RETAIL pressing on red vinyl Chock full of junk store percussion, is this to be considered inspired by call and response old time Gospel, or is it the Gospel for modern folk pop lovers? This inspired recording of strings, mandolin, drums, "whatever you can get your hands on" percussion, guitars, banjo, bass, organ, and open vocal harmonies, is deceptively loose-sound sounding on first listen. As the listener dives deeper into the record it becomes pretty apparent that this musical mongrel of a band is pretty precise, but feels like it was hewn from dirt of the land, and sounds ragged and burnt from a lifetime of tilling. The lyrics are slyly smart, artfully sinister, and built for audience participation... and while the rolling high end mandolin and banjo pluck their ways through countermelodies, there's that perfectly tattered jumble of percussion that sets the knee to bouncin' and the hands together to clap along. Find the lot of players in front of a crowd that is jubilantly singing along with the backing chorus, and you'll find the whiskey drinkers, beer swillers, the devoted Tom Waits fans who wish they could get as close to him as they can to this band. This record was incredibly fun to record. Singer/guitartist, Ryan Sollee moved to Portland, OR in the fall of 2003 from Alaska with his band at the time The Born Losers, which played a mix of rock and roll and punk. Feeling inspired by the blues, county and gospel music he was listening to, Sollee formed The Builders And The Butchers with other eclectic and like-minded musicians he had met around Portland. The Builders And The Butchers practiced a few times and played their first shows during the Halloween weekend of 2005. With little expectations, the band was surprised that after only a few shows people were singing along and responding passionately to their music. A lot of these first shows were played downtown outside of bars and clubs. If the Canadian artist’s 2017 debut album Feel Infinite was the soundtrack to a dream pregame – amping you up to lose yourself in the club – then Dawn Chorus resides in the post-rave reflective moment. A time of heightened sensuality and latent possibility. Now 29, Greene has been making music “about the club” for over a decade. His sound could be described as an emotional haze, in that its balance of sonic elements work to illuminate the overlapping feelings that lie between the familiar binaries. Dawn Chorus opens with “Serenity,” an all-back-to-mine breaks tune that Greene describes as “a weird, euphoric take on Chemical Brothers.” Lead single “Night Service” is a neon-lit hip house anthem helmed by Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon, who drapes a love letter to the club around Greene’s acid-dipped synths. Attraverso is the debut album of new ambient trio PCM. The band consists of Francesco Perra (P) who also records solo as Perry Frank, Pop producer and symphonic ambient composer Matteo Cantaluppi (C), and sound designer/engineer and PCM creative director Matteo Milea (M). The album was conceived after a brief studio session exposed that each member brought something unique to their collaborative take on ambient's many sub-genres. Attraverso, in concept, is meant to mimic four long-form journeys through human inner consciousness utilizing an amalgam of drone, modern composition, guitar ambient, and Koyaanisqatsi-eque arpeggiated kosmische musik. Each track title is the word "Attraverso" with three of the four being represented in different languages. The healing hand and surgeon’s scalpel are intertwined on Atlanta band Shepherds’ new album Insignificant Whip. The art-rock masterpiece encases the band’s vulnerable wisdom in flighty melodies that burn with intimacy and fragility as singer/lyricists Jonathan Merenivitch and Adrian Benedykt Świtoń address everything from toxic masculinity and Catholic guilt to Youtube comments and Tupac Shakur. Since their 2011 EP Holy Stain, the band have received accolades for their taut analyses of social ills and the resulting strain on body and mind, but even the skeletal no-wave that defined their early sound was bound with, in the broadest sense of the word, soul. The band’s ability to confront their deepest insecurities and doubts is more than simple catharsis, it serves to illuminate deeper questions of existence and identity, and frame them in context of systemic oppression, discrimination, and isolation. The minimalism which guided Shepherds’ earlier work has evolved into lush, expansive compositions thanks to founding bassist Peter Cauthorn, who helped flesh out the LP’s identity as a core contributor to the album’s instrumental textures. Vocalist and drummer Świtoń also took on a central role in the recording process, contributing his voice and songwriting talents to the the album’s pensive hue, while new additions Ryan York (drums), May Tabol (guitar, keyboards), and Vinny Restivo (bass) round out the live band. Moments on Insignificant Whip recall everything from Felt to Josef K, but Shepherds have a keen ability to write post-punk which is modern and prescient rather than a simple homage to a particular era of underground music. The martial rhythms still echo with the proletariat fever of their 2015 LP Exit Youth, but now the lyrics are delivered over thrilling saxophone melodies and deliberative chords, making them all the more haunting, thanks to production from Drew Vandenburg (Toro Y Moi, Mothers, Of Montreal). Throughout Insignificant Whip, the introspective nature of Shepherds is amplified by a holistic understanding of what it means to be human. The anxieties of adulthood, the teenage desires deferred, and the crushing weight of evil in the world are forged into vulnerable psalms. It’s precisely in these tear-stained moments that the album surpasses the encroaching anxiety as Shepherds invite the listener into a community which tempers the surrounding darkness and pushes back against oppression with resolute empathy.

13 million year old ghost
is the instrumental atmospheric project of Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Head Wound City, 41 Strings). The music for this debut album was written and recorded in the West Texas desert during the summer of 2017. Each of the eight tracks functions together to depict a sonic portrait, crafted by the diverse orchestral qualities of layered synths and guitars. The pervading mood is mysterious and dark with lush yearning melodies woven throughout to draw the listener into its dream.
Nick Zinner plays guitar in the three-time Grammy-nominated rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs,
the hardcore band Head Wound City, and the atmospheric project 13 million year old ghost. He has collaborated and/or performed with Bright Eyes, Santigold, The Haxan Cloak, TV On The Radio, Arcade Fire, Damon Albarn, Stop the Virgens, Africa Express, Amen Dunes, Boots, Scarlett Johansson, Amadou and Mariam, and more. He has recently produced LPs for Songhoy Blues (Mali), Deap Vally (LA), and Fufanu (Iceland). Nick wrote “41 Strings”, an orchestral piece with over 45 musicians which was performed in New York in 2011, in 2012 at the Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Youth Orchestra, in London at the Royal Festival Hall in 2014, and is now featured as the theme song for HBO’s series VICE. He has composed and performed for film soundtracks, notably “Mad Max:Fury Road”, the Spike Jonze short “I’m Here”, the documentary “They Will Have To Kill Us First”, “Knives and Skin”, and “Where The Wild Things Are”, where he co- wrote the title song “All is Love” which was nominated for a Grammy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture. He has published four books of his photography, most recently “131 Different Things” (Akashic). His photos have appeared in The New York Times, Vice, Rolling Stone and more, and have been exhibited all over the world including solo shows in Tokyo, Berlin, New York, London, Los Angeles, and Mexico City. Before co-founding Yeah Yeah Yeahs, he studied photography at Bard College, and now lives mostly in between Los Angeles and New York City.

BRICK AND MORTAR This album celebrates the first release from Jessica Pavone’s newest incarnation for string ensemble, which features two violins and two violas. Brick and Mortar, to released on Birdwatcher Records on October 18th, 2019, is her first body of string ensemble music since pausing to focus on writing for solo viola for the last six years. Her earlier work for string quartet, which substituted a second violin for double bass was documented on her 2009 and 2012 releases from the Tzadik label; Songs of Synastry and Solitude and Hope Dawson is Missing, highlighted melody, narrative, and themes of undeniable truths. Upon completion, Pavone focused primarily on creating a new and unique voice on her instrument with her solo music resulting in three releases for solo viola; Knuckle Under, Silent Spills and In the Action. Pavone returned to composing for string ensembles in the spring of 2017 by forming the J.Pavone String Ensemble as an extension of the sonic discoveries of her solo music. As both an instrumentalist and composer, Pavone has regularly and thematically explored tactile experience in her compositions and performances. This is most notable in her solo viola music, where she performs indeterminate pieces that stem from years of concentrated long tone practice, my interest in repetition, song form, sympathetic vibration, and the physicality of playing my somewhat larger-than-comfortable instrument. Founded in 2017, The Jessica Pavone String Ensemble combines these two modalities as an ensemble she both compose for, and performs in as a violist. The group presents original compositions which expand on the themes of her solo work while also integrating a deeper understanding of the effects sound has on the listener. While these discoveries have been primarily instinctual, she plans to further study these principles more formally by gaining a better understanding of Cymatics.
