This Issue: Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai and Rock Action Label Founder

How did you personally get started in the music industry? I have been playing music since I was very young but probably started in the “business” side of it when my band Mogwai made our first 7” single in Spring 1996.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? It’s perhaps recency bias but the new Arab Strap record is very, very good.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area, and if so, how is this reflected in your releases? We release a lot of Scottish music as we are based here. I think it gives the label a real identity

If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign? I would sponsor Celtic F.C.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Rock Action was the nickname of Scott Ashton, the drummer in The Stooges who are one of our favourite bands.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format? It’s a shame how expensive records have become to make (and buy!) and I think that is why CDs have retained their popularity.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? Goth Action to release Goth records. How has the label changed since it started? It was completely DIY at the beginning and is now a lot more professional, using pluggers and PR as well as having worldwide distribution. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? It was always to release good music and I don’t think that that has changed over the years. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about? I get a lot of recommendations from friends. The best band I’ve heard in a while is Shaky Hands. They’re very good.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? I think the main answer is the internet. How people consume and pay for music is completely different than when we started. How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry? It’s something we try to do as much as we can. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Monorail music industry Glasgow and World Of Echo in London are friends and great establishments and in the US, Mississippi Records in Portland. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered? As one that put out a lot of good records.

Rock Action Records is a fiercely independent Glasgow-based record label, owned and run by influential Scottish rockers Mogwai. From its very beginnings in 1996 the label has operated with an ethos that reflects the independent spirit of its owners. Fast forward to 2026 and both Mogwai and Rock Action are celebrating an incredible 30 years, with the label a successful home for a diverse range of artists, including Arab Strap, The Twilight Sad, Kathryn Joseph, bdrmm and Cloth.

JULIA JACKLIN

The Gem Indie Turquoise LP 4AD-0942-LP

LP 4AD-0942-LP

CD 4AD-0942-CD

Julia Jacklin has made a name for herself as one of Australia’s most internationally celebrated songwriters, with nominations at both the ARIA and Libera Awards, sold-out shows globally, massive tours, appearing on major festival stages from Glastonbury to Pitchfork, Newport Folk to Primavera, with countless accolades for her critically acclaimed albums.

Selling Points • PRE PLEASURE (2022) debuting at #2 on the ARIA Charts • Received two ARIA Awards and thirteen nominations • Universal praise from outlets including Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NME, MOJO, and Uncut • Upcoming US tour in the fall Tracklist Brand New God Sometimes If I Had The Hand Of God The Hardest Thing Angel Vision Real Life Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon) You Turned On The Tap Walk On Me I Wish (feat. The Maes) 505 Eno Street Hillsborough NC 27278 redeyeworldwide.com 877.733.3931

After touring flat-out for years on three beloved releases, Julia found herself at home out of contract with her record label, looking for a new manager. “For the first time since I started out, I had this big chunk of time without any industry expectations and no-one to ask me what was going on,” she remembers. “It was liberating and it was scary.” Jacklin wanted to do things intentionally this time around. She wanted to back herself. And she wanted to make the record at home in Melbourne: something she’d never done before. “I want to love and be loved, but I also want to feel free. The tension between those two things has been the central question of my life,” Julia says. This is the theme that underpins her fourth album The Gem. When Julia first moved to Melbourne from Sydney in 2017, she discovered a little bar called The Gem on a back street in Collingwood, where bands pushed dining tables to the side and set up in a corner on the floor. “The Gem felt like a metaphor for the whole process, because a lot of it did feel like digging. I felt like I was almost doing it in the dark, just trusting that I was going to find something,” says Jacklin of the record, which conjures images of excavation, of reinvention, of trusting your instincts and surrounding yourself with the people and things that make life worthwhile. It’s a soaring document of the songwriter’s journey back to herself.

Live at Field of V1s1on captures a blistering performance pressed onto an equally unconventional format: a human skull X-ray picture disc. This record Is inspired by bone music, or roentgen1zdat, a clandestine Soviet practice of pressing banned Western music onto discarded X-ray films during the 1950s and 1960s as a response to strict state censo rsh Ip of Jazz, rock 'n' roll , and other foreign cultural influences. While th Is record, ng documents a contemporary I Ive performance, the format echoes the ingenuity of those dl1c1t recordings from the 1950s and 1960s, when Jazz, rock 'n' roll, and other forbidden sounds circulated hand-to-hand on recycled medical imagery. Featuring a striking skull X-ray image embedded within the record itself, Live at Field of V1s1on transforms both the music and the med Iu m into artifacts of cultural persistence, celebrat1 ng the enduring des, re to hear, share, and preserve music in unexpected ways.

PROTOMARTYR HOTEL USONA OVERVIEW

On September 25, Protomartyr will release Hotel Usona, their seventh full-length studio album. Recorded with legendary producer Dave Fridmann (Nick Cave, MGMT, The Flaming Lips) at his own Tarbox Road Studios in western New York, it’s an effort that finds the Detroit post-punk outfit reckoning with the horrors of our current moment. It is not easy listening. It’s essential.

TRACKLISTING 1. The Old Hotel 2. Sounds We Cannot Hear 3. Converts 4. Exalted Eagles 5. The Knife Dream 6. Feed The Sewer 7. Lavender – Gospel 8. Third Country 9. Checking Out CATALOG NUMBER: WIG571 RELEASE DATE: September 25, 2026 FILE UNDER: Alternative “P”

Over the last two decades, Protomartyr—vocalist Joe Casey, drummer Alex Leonard, bassist Scott Davidson, guitarist-multi-instrumentalist and co-producer Greg Ahee—have built one of the most rewarding and often exhilarating bodies of work in recent memory by veering in and out of darkness, grappling with what most frightens us, saddens us, disgusts us, embarrasses and enrages us. The stuff that makes us human. Casey has imagined his country as an aging hotel here, each song a room haunted by its own troublesome guest: the slow paralysis of modern life (“Sounds We Cannot Hear”), AI (“Feed the Sewer”), deportation (“Third Country”), warped patriotism (“Exalted Eagles”), violence (“The Knife Dream”), JD Vance (“Converts”), and the often unbearable weight of becoming a father anyway (“Checking Out”). It’s a hard look at a nation in free fall, gripped by fascism. Musically, Ahee has built worlds within a world, drawing new influence from the Middle East and ‘50s exotica, finding common ground between dread and joy, a speciality. All of it—Leonard’s drumming in particular—is rendered more tangible and terrifying by Fridmann, whose son, Jon, contributes horns. You can feel the stakes in every song, feel the band levitating to meet them. They’ve never sounded more powerful.

“If the idea of writing a soothed-out synth-pop gem with a terminally ill cat as your only audience sounds simultaneously intimate and weird, then so does 2nd, Ives’ shortbut-sweet latest project released this past spring on NYC label Dots Per Inch. The instrumentation is brutally bare — just Ives and an MC-505 Roland that she procured after researching the gear that electro-pop iconoclast M.I.A. started out with — but her songs possess a hair-raising level of lush tactileness, recalling a less arch version of gonzo kindred spirit John Maus’ synthetic style as well as West Coast duo the Blow.” -Larry Fitzmaurice for FADER

THE GO-BETWEENS Their Beggars Banquet albums available individually for the first time in over 20 years

Beggars Banquet Records

Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express, Tallulah, 16 Lovers Lane, Fountains of Youth (Live at the Town and Country Club) The Go-Betweens are one of the most beloved and influential Australian groups of all-time and were the quintessential cult band. Throughout their hugely acclaimed career they sustained an unparalleled artistic consistency which year by year elevated them above their contemporaries. We are pleased to make their Beggars Banquet albums available individually on vinyl for the first time in over 30 years. The records were remastered in 2019 for the second volume of Domino’s G Stands For Go-Betweens Anthology, and will also be available on cd. The albums were recorded in what could be called the band’s ‘London Years’ - when they lived and recorded in the city. Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express (1986) and Tallulah (1987) are studio albums, while Fountains Of Youth, catches the group in imperious form at the Town and Country Club in May 1987. The Go-Betweens existed in and out of time - widespread fame may have alluded them, but the ability to make great records didn’t.

Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express This was the fourth album by The Go-Betweens. Record Collector called it “one of the greatest albums of the decade” and Uncut wrote that “everything comes together with the perfect fourth album”. Drummer Lindy Morrison said “We produced this ourselves and it’s got the best songs, and I think every single song is a classic.” The band entered the studio determined to create the album they envisioned. Forster later wrote, “If this was to be our last shot, it had to be on our terms. There’d be no drum machines, no piecemeal recording, no acquiescence to higher authority. Our intention was to expand on the crisp, woody sound of Before Hollywood, to include a grander, more exotic range of instrumentation.”

Format: LP BBQ-2168-LP

On the band’s fifth album, they added multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown, and she broadened their sound and gave it more drama. The album is a pivotal one in their discography and sits as a stepping-stone between their early era, and their more richly textured later work. Paste Magazine included it in their list of the best new-wave albums and said that it features “several signature works by the group’s chief writers, most notably McLennan’s infectiously chorused shoulda-been-hits “Right Here” and “Bye Bye Pride,” as well as such characteristically edgy Forster compositions as the undertowing “House That Jack Kerouac Built” and “The Clarke Sisters,” a haunting character study of spinsters that perfectly captures its author’s eye for detail.”

Tallulah

16 Lovers Lane

Format: CD BBQ-2169-CD

Format: LP

This was the band’s sixth album, and Record Collector noted that it’s “almost universal- BBQ-2170-LP ly acknowledged as The Go-Betweens finest hour” – and it’s been referred to as “the indie Rumours”. The ten beautiful songs on this album are all love songs and it’s been called a piece of “romantic artistry”. Legendary music critic Robert Christgau called it “the straightest and catchiest bunch of love songs they’ve ever produced” and the Format: CD album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Forster BBQ-2180-CD described the album as, “the perfect combination between London melancholy and Sydney sunshine.”

Fountains Of Youth (Live at the Town and Country Club) Recorded professionally in May 1987, this stunning live set was captured right before the release of Tallulah. Robert Forster noted that “This show is almost certainly the only performance of The Go-Betweens’ career that was captured on 24-track, 2-inch analog tape. The recording was made from a mobile recording truck parked beside the venue’s stage door….Our intentions for the recording heavily influenced the way we approached our performance. What you are hearing is not a typical Go-Betweens show. This is a one off - and it manifests itself in one big way. The set list. Given this opportunity to catalogue over four sides of vinyl, we took a more adventurous course regarding ‘the set’. What we have, is not only a one-off recording, but a one-off show. And some of the best moments comes from our wild intent.” Beggars Banquet 134 Grand Street NY, NY 10013 beggarsbanquetrecords.com

Soul Jazz Records’ new edition of their classic New York Noise: Dance Music from The New York Underground 1978-82 freshly remastered and loud. “New York Noise is a comprehensive look at the post-punk and no wave era, a short period in time whose influence is still immeasurable and sensed today.” THE GUARDIAN “One of the most satisfying archival collections, Soul Jazz’s compilation New York Noise 1978-1982, gathers far-reaching tracks from such diverse acts as Liquid Liquid, Material, and Glenn Branca.” Pitchfork This new 2026 edition features classic New York post-punk, punk funk, synth wave and no wave tracks from Arthur Russell/Dinosaur L, James White and the Contortions, The Theoretical Girls, Mars, Konk, Material, Bush Tetras, Lizzy Mercier Descloux alongside rare tracks by the likes of Alan Vega (Suicide), Chain Gang and Implog. ‘New York Noise’ sums up the point in time and space where dance music and punk rock first met as New York’s No Wave artists such as Glenn Branca, James White alongside new york dance music’s experimental pioneers such as Arthur Russell (Dinosaur l), Bill Laswell (Material), and Konk created new musical art forms out of this union. The album comes complete with original extensive sleeve notes and exclusive photography. “Compilations like this are necessary because they document bygone fragments of time and keep them alive for younger generations. Compilations like this are dangerous because they tend to fall in the hands of young bands who spend more time looking behind than ahead.” All Music

Gilla Band never know where they’re going next. For over ten years now, the Dublin quartet — vocalist Dara Kiely, guitarist Alan Duggan Borges, bassist Daniel Fox, and drummer Adam Faulkner — have been redefining what you could loosely call “rock music” in the 21st century, influencing a wide swath of similarly forward-thinking guitar acts along the way. Across 2015’s Holding Hands With Jamie, 2019’s The Talkies, and 2022’s Most Normal, the band perfected a vision that wasn’t quite post-punk, wasn’t quite noiserock, wasn’t quite anything besides an idiosyncratic, ground-breaking hybrid that could only come from the four of them. As soon as they submitted Most Normal for mastering, they began the patient search for their next destination. Over time, the process led them to their fourth album Pugnello, the boldest left turn in a career full of them. In the four years since Most Normal, each member embarked on other artistic endeavors. Kiely fostered a newfound love of painting, Faulkner played drums for Lankum on the road, Fox became an increasingly indemand producer guiding ascendant acts like Sprints, Lambrini Girls, and Mandy, Indiana, while Duggan Borges launched his solo project the Null Club with collaborations featuring Mandy, Indiana’s Valentine Caulfield, the Horrors’ Faris Badwan, Miss Grit, and Brooklyn MC Elucid. All their extracurricular activity existed in parallel with the exploratory route towards Pugnello, but also informed the band as they reconvened to crystallize the album’s vision.

The Veils

The Runaway Found • Nux Vomica • Sun Gangs Friday September 25th, 2026 PRESS Veils frontman Finn Andrews doesn’t breath the same air as the rest of us. Relationship troubles become “knives sharp, put through the heart ... I like them there that way”. ..The Tide That Left and Never Came Back could have fitted snugly on to the Smiths’ masterpiece, The Queen is Dead. The hushed, reverential The Valleys of New Orleans echoes Nick Cave, but Andrews’ sheer manic fervour ensures that tracks such as the combustible More Heat Than Light defies comparison. Essential for anyone who likes their music to stand metaphorically on a mountain and rage at distant stars. -The Guardian Now, The Veils haven’t reinvented themselves. But their sound seems to have grown like Alice in Wonderland when she eats the cake that makes her get bigger. And with Sun Gangs it’s as if they’ve finished the whole cake and the house burst, bricks and mortar exploding through the sky like fireworks. - Drowned in Sound

The Veils’ first three albums are returning to vinyl thanks to Rough Trade Records. The Runaway Found (2004), Nux Vomica (2006) and 2009’s Sun Gangs established the New Zealand band as purveyors of lush, romantic indie, able to sweep through cinematic vistas into intimate emotional corners, via gothic orchestration and atmospheric driving rhythms. Founded and fronted by singer-songwriter Finn Andrews while still a teenager, over their first three albums, The Veils carved out a musical landscape of their own that was in turn deep and enveloping yet emotionally raw and direct. Having only enjoyed a limited vinyl run on their releases, due to the format’s neglected commercial status during the 2000s, the repressing of The Runaway Found, Nux Vomica and Sun Gangs, offers audiences a fresh opportunity to enjoy these records with the full depth, fidelity and artwork they deserve, and reminding listeners of the musical secrets The Veils revealed to the world.

SELLING POINTS Film directors Paolo Sorrentino, Tim Burton and David Lynch have used their music on soundtracks.

GENRE: ROCK / PSYCHEDELIC FILE UNDER: “W” Wooden Shjips ORIGINAL RELEASE: November 12, 2013 REISSUE RELEASE: September 25, 2026 NO EXPORT

Wooden Shjips’ rise to prominence from the psychedelic underground to the rock and roll overground has been a steady sojourn. With each consecutive release, the band has found new ways of transforming heady psychedelic rock into minimalist masterpieces, bridging the gap between the woozy freeness of Les Rallizes Denudes and Crazy Horse and the tightly wound simplicity of Suicide and the Velvet Underground. Back To Land, the quartet’s follow-up to West, is the first Wooden Shjips record to be conceived outside of San Francisco. Ripley Johnson and Omar Ahsanuddin moved to Oregon, where the lush climates became a major influence on the songwriting. The band’s scope expanded to include more earthy, grounded tones, such as the acoustic guitar, without abandoning their modernist psych core. There is an increased brightness to many of the songs on Back To Land, an easiness with which the band has flirted with in the past but never fully realized until now. The nervy urgency of West has evolved into an assured confidence, from the alliterative, interlocking guitar and organ groove of “Ruins” to the languidly compelling guitar solos of “Servants.” The addition of the acoustic guitar to the band’s textural palate is coupled here with some of the most melodically direct songs the band has written. Still, there are still plenty of signature Shjips songs, with distorted riffs, modal keys, and a steady, crisp drum sound unfolding intensely while the elongated melodic guitar lines drift in and out of the foreground. On Back to Land this energy is captured in clear detail, designed as an immersive experience rather than a passive blasting. Back To Land was laid to tape at Jackpot Recording Studios in Portland by Kendra Lynn and mixed by Larry Crane. It was recorded over an 11-day session, resulting in some of the most detailed and spacious recordings of their career. Back To Land is a breakthrough record for the Wooden Shjips: nuanced, varied and utterly addictive. GENRE: Contemporary Classical, Ambient, Electronic FILE UNDER: “R” Reidy A clerestory – a bright or ‘clear’ level or ‘story’ – is an upper section of wall, most often in a church punctuated by windows. It is a powerful image for grasping this luminous new music from Jules Reidy. Light casts shadows, of course, and logics of shadowing, mirroring, and distorted reflection—of key importance for Reidy’s work as a whole— inform the sumptuous surfaces of Clerestory. ‘Shadow Symmetric’ is a string quartet commissioned and performed by the JACK Quartet as part of their JACK Studio program. Reidy’s pairing with the quartet is felicitous: JACK are one of the preeminent new music ensembles working today, with a particular interest in just intonation, an important component of Reidy’s music. The piece makes simultaneous use of two pitch sets, beginning from the same starting point but expanded using different scaling to produce what Reidy describes as ‘two offset spectral layers.’ The two sets of intervals are close but not identical; when heard together, they produce uncanny effects of near-unison, of perfect consonance grasped in a warped reflection. The piece’s gentle pacing and constrained dynamic range invites us to become immersed in its language of static resonance, complex beating tones, and subtle harmonic surprise. It is primarily a music of harmony, but rhythmic organization is key to its effect: arranged as successive harmonic blocks that at times overlap, with staggered introductions of the quartet’s four voices often serving to key the listener’s attention into the blurring of the near-unison pitches, the music moves with the stateliness of an early Baroque chorale. Through it, there threads a melodic theme, passed between instruments and tuning systems, almost at the threshold of perception but with the same yearning quality familiar to listeners of Reidy’s guitar works. ‘Clerestory Windows’ offers up a distorted mirror image of the string quartet, arranged as a series of episodes that each remake the material in their own way. It begins with an arrangement of the string quartet material for MIDI strings and voices, repositioning its rigorous harmonic exploration somewhere between the Lovely Music Ltd universe and a 90s RPG soundtrack. This episode derives from Reidy’s installation Inside, Crystals and Circuitry, held in Stockholm in 2025, made up of multi-channel sound broadcast by transducers in suspended sheets of glass illuminated by spotlights, producing a mysterious effect where shadows appear more palpable than the sheets themselves. The piece moves into a lyrical 12-string acoustic guitar air performed at the installation opening, before the strings from the first side reappear, now frozen and stretched into slow-moving waves, with electric guitar tones rippling across. From this emerge flickering arpeggios, achieved by arranging the string quartet material for the RMI, an early digital synthesizer. This cues a move into more active terrain, preparing the way for the delirious final episode, where the string quartet material is re-arranged once more, this time for staccato patterns of stuttering electric guitar notes, eventually giving way to spacious chords shadowed by a pair of ringing sine tones. Clerestory is a meditation on fundamental dynamics of human experience: orientation and disorientation, the hazy borders the hazy borders between the material and the spiritual, and the instability of identity.

Clerestory Windows V SALES POINTS Side A is composed of Shadow Symetric, which was commissioned and performed by the JACK Quartet. Side B consists of Clerestory Windows, a reworked and reimagined version of this performance by Jules Reidy. “[Reidy’s] music feels both warmly familiar and uncomfortably alien; therein lies its power.” - Pitchfork Composer and noted guitarist Jules Reidy has collaborated with the likes of claire rousay, Oren Ambarchi, Andrea Belfi, and Sam Dunscombe. JACK Quartet (Christopher Otto, Austin Wulliman, John Pickford Richards, and Jay Campbell) is an awardwinning string quartet dedicated to championing the work of 20th and 21st century composers, who are responsible for commissioning the work. They have collaborated with the likes of Catherine Lamb, John Zorn, John Luther Adams, and Ellen Fullman, and have performed compositions by Steve Reich, Liza Lim, Iannis Xenakis, Georg Friedrich Haas, and Helmut Lachenmann. “With that sprawling stylistic range and its technical mastery, its enthusiastic curiosity about eminent and student composers alike, its precision and passion, the JACK has, since its founding in 2005, become one of contemporary music’s indispensable ensembles.” - The New York Times Reidy will be performing select dates around Europe and the US in support of the record. Clerestory will be available on LP, Limited Metallic Gold Colored LP and CD. All formats come with a download coupon. “Jules Reidy is another musician transforming the capabilities of an instrument, in this case the guitar…somewhere between Vini Reilly, Glenn Branca and Kevin Shields.” - The Guardian

Stornoway Beyonder Street date: 09/25/2026 Fresh from selling out London’s Royal Albert Hall, Stornoway return with Beyonder — their most ambitious album to date. Out 25 September via Cooking Vinyl, the record expands the band’s sound while holding onto the melodic warmth and sense of wonder that has long defined their music.

Tracklist: A. 1. River Of Voices 2. Marco Polo 3. Fire And Water 4. Skydiver 5. Hummingbird Feathers 6. The Honeyeater’s Song (Feat. Ladysmith Black Mambazo) B. 1. The Book Of Time 2. Mariana 3. Spirit Walker 4. Wild Geese 5. Leave Your Light On

The album began in one of the most remote corners of the UK. While volunteering as a National Trust ranger on St Kilda, 100 kilometres west of the Outer Hebrides, frontman Brian Briggs spent weeks living among the island’s towering sea cliffs, seabird colonies and abandoned settlements. The experience — standing on the edge of the Atlantic with nothing between the island and Canada — sparked the first songs that would become Beyonder. A photograph taken there now forms the album cover. “Never have I been anywhere so wild and exposed, and never have I felt more alive,” Briggs says of the experience. The stark landscape and the island’s layered history — where centuries-old blackhouses stand not far from a modern military base — shaped a record that quietly reflects on connection, fragility and the changing world around us. Beyonder is an album for a changing world. It confronts the biodiversity and climate crises, the rise of divisive politics, and the toll these pressures take on our minds and communities. These are songs about journeys and destinations, discovery and choice, and taken together they cultivate a hopeful state of mind in unsettled times. Musically, Beyonder sees Stornoway stepping beyond the folk label often attached to their early work. The songs feel broader in scale, with expansive arrangements that still centre on the band’s distinctive harmonies and clear melodic writing. The album was mixed by multi-Grammy-winning engineer Oli Jacobs (Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, The 1975).

megiapa Intentions Intentions, the debut of LA-via-Chicago beat maker, composer, and multi-instrumentalist megiapa, is a 40 minute master class in synth-heavy, jazz-informed Neo-soul. megiapa’s lush and emotionally layered album, feels less like a collection of songs and more like a living archive of transformation. Across its warm synths, fluttering basslines, meditative voice notes and spiritual grooves, the Los Angelesbased producer, vocalist and composer maps the uncertain terrain between heartbreak, healing, fear, and surrender. The album’s title is genuine. “The record is literally my intentions,” she says. “It’s a representation of my intentions, my dreams over the last five years or so.” Those years carried the weight of upheaval: the pandemic, the collapse of a long-term relationship, a move away from Chicago, and the disorientation that follows when the structure of your life suddenly disappears beneath you. But Intentions never sounds defeated. Instead, it radiates the quiet confidence of someone learning to trust herself in real time.

Smidley

Murphy Horse

Release Date: September 25th, 2026 In the past ten years, Conor Murphy the person and Smidley the band have come to exist beyond the mere creative overflow left unexplored in his work with Foxing. Through his own growth in and out of Smidley, though, art and life itself have entered into an ongoing cycle of redefinition. This redefinition isn’t a destination, but a new pathway paved by Murphy’s gratitude for and security in the artist, husband, and man that he’s become. Smidley’s third album, Murphy Horse, soundtracks this journey.

Though doubt remains a recurring obstacle for Murphy, each Smidley song brings him back home to love. Murphy chides himself for being too career-driven and fantasizing about freedom from such earthly woes as cameos from Lucy Dacus, Shinra Knives, NNAMDÏ, Adam Schatz (Japanese Breakfast), as well as mixing by Joe Reinhart (Algernon Cadwallader, Beach Bunny), give the album some deep indie cred.

Distributed Exclusively by Redeye info@royalmountainrecord.com www.royalmountainrecords.com

Murphy Horse is bristling with performances tinged with shoegaze, tropicalia, and 505 Eno St., Hillsborough, NC, 27278 80’s rock influence that see Smidley extending beyond his earlier closely-sung, indie folk style. Murphy leans much more into Smidley as an ensemble. Though not www.redeyeworldwide.com a debut by any means, to Murphy, Murphy Horse certainly feels like one. The Jeanette Wall confusion and doubt are no longer debilitating because Murphy has the support he jeanette@redeyeworldwide.com spent his whole life seeking. Everything and everyone can be repurposed.

As conceptual as Xiu Xiu's fusion of post-punk, gamelan, synth pop, folk, and noise might seem, the group's music never feels overly cerebral or detached. On the contrary, it's usually brimming over with often contradictory emotions: love, hate, sex, violence, fear, and humor cling together so tightly in Jamie Stewart's songs that they can't be separated. Harsh and beautiful words and sounds remain intertwined on La Forȇt, which ranks among Xiu Xiu's subtlest, and scariest, albums. “guided by dream logic, flowing and crashing unexpectedly. And, like a dream, Xiu Xiu’s music is unique, difficult to describe, and utterly compelling once you give yourself over to it.” – AllMusic “a record that seems so brash on the surface reveals its subtlety by increments lyrical blend of the sweet and profane” – Pitchfork

DEAR GOD I HATE MYSELF The two biggest constants throughout Xiu Xiu's catalog are honesty and evolution. This remains true with Dear God, I Hate Myself as it delivers a look at responsibility, fear, healing, and societal roles wrapped in rich gothic pop music. The sound is still distinctly Xiu Xiu, but Jamie Stewart's vocals are finally effortless paired with vibrant melodies full of subtlety and the distinct sonic accents expected of this anticipated Xiu Xiu release. The result is a record that proves that art can be pop and pop can challenge you to look inside yourself.

Mixed Light Ned Collette STREET DATE August 28th 2026 Ned Collette’s latest album Mixed Light, his 8th solo outing, shines that bright light on a cultivated and multifaceted songwriting talent. As all true Nedheads would know to expect, the album flows freely between styles, genre-hopping and rollercoasting through moods. Sometimes delicate and dreamy then warm, dramatic and melancholy, it tumbles into rhythmic, almost psychedelic, melodic pop, before diving into a whirlpool of his most raucous and raw offerings to date. Collette’s songwriting is compositional and often complex but never disordered. Bringing to bear the insight of a storied 20+ year career, encompassing experimental jazz, progressive folk, indie pop and post-rock – all of which echo in the tracks on what is a truly accomplished, beautiful and intricate album. The scenes in Mixed Light are illuminated by dazzling guest vocals and a cast of transcendent players. Leah Senior’s sure and beautiful voice is interwoven with Ned’s throughout the album, adding depth of character and gravity. At the centre of the record sits ‘In the Kitchen’, a brilliantly concise duet with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, whose instantly recognisable, visceral and unvarnished edge is a counterpoint to Ned’s darker tone. Collette has built quite a clan around him over recent years, and a lot of regulars appear. The Necks’ Chris Abrahams joins for the third album in a row on piano, old Wirewalker bandmates Joe Talia and Ben Bourke feature more prominently than they have since 2014’s Networking In Purgatory, and the current Berlin trio of Steve Heather and Fredrik Kinbom also appear in some of the albums most exploratory moments. Freely keening saxophone appears courtesy of Melbourne legend Tim Pledger, Anthea Caddy returns on cello, Judith Hamann sings too, and flutes from Belinda Woods and Brazil’s Marina Cyrino combine classically with Collette’s now ubiquitous nylon string. For the first time in a long time he throws down some pretty heavy electric playing as well.

AND THEIR POWER WAS ALIVE WHITED SEPULCHRE RECORDS

The depths of connection to land, connection lost (and recovered), land itself lost (and so often never recovered); land partitioned, annexed, privatized, made allegedly secure –– Faith Coloccia and Tashi Dorji’s collaborative record And Their Power Was Alive haunts the edges of these concepts and antagonizes the possibility of tidy resolutions around them. It aims to yield in order to achieve its ends; a tumbling passion, higher solutions. Coloccia and Dorji’s longstanding collaborative relationship and friendship bolsters this massive conceptual weight –– the music is as stirring as it is gorgeous, as exploratory as it is surefooted. And Their Power Was Alive manifests and rises up as a profound iteration of the interrelatedness of the personal and the political, poetically. The road was desolate with no travelers. Debris, lost listings blowing on the sides of the freeway, caught up in fences. Sleeping in the truck I had a dream: a voice in narration: “And then the land was all used up, and the men upon it were afraid. The tears they shed sank down into the dust and barren soil.” Coloccia’s plaintive voice, as always, is clear and stirring, intimate, close, and notably here recorded without reverb. She is steady and her lyrics echo dream phrases which visited her during major life shifts: a drive through the arid desert, explaining the concept of private property to the next generation, intergenerational knowledge and caregiving. All of this establishes a melancholia of reflections on land, history, scale. The first words sung on this record are: “Cosmic Horror! I am nothing, I am no-one” and even here, Coloccia is steady. Dorji’s glacial layers of distorted howling guitar create a rise and crest and fall –– symphonies of noise, roaring but distant like fire in the hills, interwoven with piano, organ, and tubular bells.

Distro Contact: Lori Miller, lori@redeyeworldwide.com, 877-733-3931 x216

The Ongoing conversations between Coloccia and Dorji throughout and following these shifting times lead to the recording of And Their Power Was Alive, the two trading first demos then eventually final takes which were recorded between Anacortes, Washington’s The Unknown Studio and Dorji’s home studio in Asheville, North Carolina. The resulting recordings shimmer as they wrestle, tremble as they seek. Fans of either artist’s work should take note, especially Coloccia’s work as Mamiffer, as well as kindred spirits like Tiny Vipers, Simon Fisher Turner, One Leg One Eye and Big Brave. And Their Power Was Alive is philosophical, potent. It is full of quiet strength and effective yielding energy. Coloccia and Dorji together grapple with the interlopers of various lands, make space for the spectres who watch them go. And Their Power Was Alive is a response to a world full of excessive force. It is an intentioned opening. Like all of Coloccia’s and Dorji’s work, it is a yielding to the continued presence of the dead, to the spirits of the earth and to the natural world; yielding as praxis.

COOKED

OREN AMBARCHI Keen listeners who have dug below the surface of Oren Ambarchi’s triple-digit discography know that alongside hypnotic minimalism, veins of irreverent and joyously wayward exploration run deep. Cooked is something of a landmark in Oren’s work, bringing this gloriously cuckoo sensibility right into the heart of his most high-profile solo work. Carrying on the grand Ambarchi tradition of meticulously constructed all-star studio jams (which reached new heights with Shebang, his 2022 Drag City debut), Cooked brings together collaborators from Australia, Germany, Japan and Sweden for two side-long epics where the foot keeps tapping even as the mind boggles.

The Arc of Ambarchi on Drag City:

Ambarchi / O'Malley / Dunn Shade Themes from Kairos DC586 2xLP

Ambarchi / Berthling / Werliin Ghosted DC838 LP

Oren Ambarchi Shebang DC853 LP

Beginning with piano ripples from Eiko Ishibashi, after only a few seconds “Hidden Tableau” takes an unexpected turn with the entrance of a groaning synthetic voice (created by Konrad Sprenger, production mastermind at the helm for Shebang and this piece). The first half of the piece develops as an oddly moving concerto for this moaning and growling ghost in the machine and a delicate backdrop of piano, organ-like tones, and Oren’s signature shimmering Leslie guitar. As the beautifully flexible swing of Joe Talia’s drums enters, the harmonies fill out into woozy clouds and the synthetic voice seems to morph into something approaching a mutant trumpet. In a left turn that seems to come out of nowhere yet make an inexplicable kind of sense, the piece is then overtaken by patterns of intricate guitar and synthetic arpeggios. These might be Jim O’Rourke on synth, but who knows? If we learned anything from Simian Angel and Shebang, it’s that almost anything we hear could come from Oren’s guitar. Cooked is a long way from the spacious, light-dappled grooves of Ghosted, but Oren’s Swedish bandmates play starring roles here, with Johan Berthling’s double bass anchoring both sides, and drummer Andreas Werliin lending his delicate touch to the second piece, “Sleight of Hand”. Beginning with glistening layers of electric 12-string guitar, “Sleight of Hand” takes some key cues from electric Miles touchstones like “Feio” or his epic take on David Crosby’s “Guinnevere”, with Berthling’s sparse basslines punctuating an almost weightless cornucopia of shifting detail, glimmering with subtle contributions from Michiko Ogawa on sho and James Rushford on a panoply of acoustic keyboards. Suddenly, everything is overwhelmed by a knotty, hyper-complex ‘solo’ from Marcus Pal on digital synthesis, teleporting us to an alternate history where Allan Holdsworth traded the SynthAxe for Xenakis’ UPIC. Building with additional drums and percussion from Will Guthrie to a peak of sizzling intensity, the music then goes sideways into a gently surreal coda, where some distinctly Zawinul-esque chords and Fredrik Rasten’s guitar float over a sprightly rhythm box, the avian inventions of Swedish virtuoso whistler Isak Hedtjärn wafting atop the sunlit stew.

It’s certainly Cooked, but not overcooked. Like 10cc in their prime, it layers a dizzying number of elements through intricate studio processes, yet somehow remains open, spontaneous, and intuitive, the whole thing suffused with an Arnold Dreyblatt & The Orchestra of Excited Strings omnivorous love of music where everything is up for grabs. It’s a big call, but Resolve Cooked might just be the wildest ride that Oren Ambarchi has taken us on yet. DC877 LP

BRIGHT MADNESS

SQUANDERERS Bright Madness is the third album from the pinch-me-is-this-real improvising trio of Wendy Eisenberg, David Grubbs, and Bonner Kramer. Fresh off their 2025 Big Ears appearance, SQUANDERERS slid on over to Kramer’s adopted hometown of Asheville, North Carolina and laid down the glorious afternoon’s worth of instant compositions that stands before you. It’s the sound of Eisenberg, Grubbs, and Kramer doing their damnedest to dazzle one another, from shell-game sleights of hand to the effortless beauty of “Theme for the Casino at 5 A.M.,” from the ratcheting up of tension and general plot thickening of “Theme for Femme-Presenting Hands” and “Theme for the World’s Consigliere” to the epic “Theme for Nihologisms,” which hints at the scale of SQUANDERERS’ live performances.

Theme for Craned Necks Theme for a Soft Resolution Theme for Whiskey the Turnspit Dog Theme for Femme-Presenting Hands Theme for the World’s Consigliere Theme for the Glacier Within Him Theme for Nihilogisms

In a recent cover feature on Wendy Eisenberg in The Wire, Grubbs described SQUANDERERS as “a dream of a trio, something that I always hoped I might find in an improvising group. Part of me wants to chalk it up to attitude — Wendy and Kramer having serene confidence in what they produce in real time — but it also has to do with their consummate skills as musicians. The wild, uninhibited flow of ideas from Wendy I’ve experienced when we’ve played as a duo slows down and floats in amber with SQUANDERERS.” Wendy’s take on SQUANDERERS from the same feature? “It’s the most beautiful mermaid shit I’ve ever heard in my life.” Bright Madness follows If a Body Meet a Body and Skantagio, two full-length SQUANDERERS offerings on Kramer’s Shimmy-Disc label. As Raphael Helfand concluded in his Pitchfork review of If a Body Meet a Body, “What we’re left with is not so much a pristine work of collective genius as a testament to the transcendence that can occur when a group of individual geniuses sit down together with no greater aim than melding their minds for a while. If only all our squanderings could be so fruitful.” Wendy Eisenberg is an improviser and songwriter who uses guitar, pedals, the tenor banjo, the computer, the synthesizer, and the voice. Their work spans genres, from jazz to noise to avant-rock to delicate songs; their performances span venues, from international festivals to intimate basements. Though often working solo as both a songwriter and improviser, they also perform in the rock band Editrix, and in endless other combinations of their heroes and peers including Bill Orcutt, Caroline Davis, Ryan Sawyer, and John Zorn. David Grubbs has released sixteen solo albums and was a member of the groups Gastr del Sol, Bastro, and Squirrel Bait. He has performed with Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, Luc Ferrari, Susan Howe, Will Oldham, the Red Krayola, and many others. Grubbs is the author of numerous books including Good night the pleasure was ours, The Voice in the Headphones, Now that the audience is assembled, and Records Ruin the Landscape: John Cage, the Sixties, and Sound Recording. Bonner Kramer is a composer/musician/filmmaker and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with artists as diverse as John Zorn, Butthole Surfers, Bill Frisell, Ween, The Fugs, Thurston Moore, Penn Jillette, Allen Ginsberg, Jad Fair, and Laraaji, to name but a few. He is also a renowned record producer (Galaxie 500, Low, Daniel Johnston, Will Oldham, etc.) and the founder of the iconic NYC record label, ShimmyDisc. He rarely performs onstage, and SQUANDERERS is his first long-term recording project to include live performances since 1999. He currently lives and works in the Appalachian temperate rainforest.

The Jet Black Berries · Sundown on Venus [Definitive Edition] SEPTEMBER 25, 2026

THE JET BLACK BERRIES Sundown on Venus “Restores the album to what the band originally envisioned in 1985.” Rochester, NY's The Jet Black Berries existed at the strange and fertile intersection of post-punk restlessness, roots-rock mythology, psychedelic revival, and science-fiction dread. Emerging from the band’s earlier incarnation as New Math, the group refocused in the mid-1980s with a new name, a new vision, and a sound that moved beyond the limits of punk rock and new wave. Recorded in two days in August of 1984, Sundown on Venus was originally released by Enigma/Pink Dust after the newly reconfigured band signed with Enigma. The original 1985 release, however, arrived with complications. Enigma wanted additional material included, so the album was packaged with a bonus 12-inch featuring extra tracks, including a song written for the film The Return of the Living Dead, ill-chosen cover songs, and re-recordings of older New Math material. Now, the Sundown on Venus [Definitive Edition] restores the album to what the band originally envisioned it in 1985. 12 songs newly remastered & re-presented with focus, which brings attention back to the album’s dark narrative arc & unusual genre chemistry. Though the original album received glowing press coverage on both sides of the Atlantic in outlets including Cash Box, Billboard, CMJ, Interview, and the UK’s SOUNDS, Sundown on Venus never found the commercial audience its ambition deserved. What once slipped through the cracks of underground rock history now stands as a missing link between cowpunk, psych revival, rockabilly, goth, postpunk, Americana, & cinematic sci-fi storytelling.

• Limited edition COLOR pressing on SILVER vinyl Chock full of junk store percussion, is this to be considered inspired by call and response old time Gospel, or is it the Gospel for modern folk pop lovers? This inspired recording of strings, mandolin, drums, "whatever you can get your hands on" percussion, guitars, banjo, bass, organ, and open vocal harmonies, is deceptively loose-sound sounding on first listen. As the listener dives deeper into the record it becomes pretty apparent that this musical mongrel of a band is pretty precise, but feels like it was hewn from dirt of the land, and sounds ragged and burnt from a lifetime of tilling. The lyrics are slyly smart, artfully sinister, and built for audience participation... and while the rolling high end mandolin and banjo pluck their ways through countermelodies, there's that perfectly tattered jumble of percussion that sets the knee to bouncin' and the hands together to clap along. Find the lot of players in front of a crowd that is jubilantly singing along with the backing chorus, and you'll find the whiskey drinkers, beer swillers, the devoted Tom Waits fans who wish they could get as close to him as they can to this band. This record was incredibly fun to record. Singer/guitartist, Ryan Sollee moved to Portland, OR in the fall of 2003 from Alaska with his band at the time The Born Losers, which played a mix of rock and roll and punk. Feeling inspired by the blues, county and gospel music he was listening to, Sollee formed The Builders And The Butchers with other eclectic and like-minded musicians he had met around Portland. The Builders And The Butchers practiced a few times and played their first shows during the Halloween weekend of 2005. With little expectations, the band was surprised that after only a few shows people were singing along and responding passionately to their music. A lot of these first shows were played downtown outside of bars and clubs. PRESS QUOTES “The Builders and the Butchers initially turned heads with their immersive performance style—employing singing in the round sans mic, recruiting the crowd as back-up vocalists, traipsing off into the street in the middle of the closing song. But shorn of the theatrics, the band’s music easily holds its own. The record traces the course of a traditional Butchers set, from stripped-down crowd-grabbing opener “The Night, Pt. 1” to lovely sing-along gospel closer “Find Me in the Air.” – WILLAMETTE WEEK (Best Local Albums of 2007) “The original intention of the Builders and the Butchers was to make funeral music, but on the way to the cemetery something changed. Instead of heads hanging low and mournful elegies to the deceased, this local ensemble turned the funeral plot into a graveside party by way of the junkyard. Liberally grabbing from bluegrass, country, and punk—armed with just about any instrument they came across—this band has accidentally stumbled upon something incredible: a very distinctive and interactive way to create and present music.” – PORTLAND MERCURY

Murex

Inventio

STREET DATE: September 25th 2026

Artists making pop music today are expected to calcify as one easily consumable version of themselves, or capitulate wildly to the capricious algorithm. Murex, a Swedish musician and artist, and one of Young Recordings’ latest signings, is already an accomplished songwriter, propelling the work of women challenging those constraints their way. Inventio spreads its wings beyond that.

LP: YO-498-LP File Under:Electronic Vinyl non-returnable

CD: YO-498-LP File Under:Electronic

PRESS “A vivid piece of electronic production, channeling anger, rage, and anxiety into a tightly controlled but emotionally overwhelming track.” - Rombo Magazine “A new signing to revered London label Young, Murex has already garnered word of mouth hype in her native Sweden. Amorphous, devastatingly effective avant-pop, she works from her own Stockholm studio, beholden to no one other than her own creative instincts. Melting together left-field electronics, disintegrated pop ideologies, and aspects of Nordic pagan lore, Murex aims to show, but never tell” - Clash Magazine “‘Hardness of a Silverspoon’, is a low-hanging cloud to the face, all gothic, choral and chilling, like Boards of Canada fronted by an anguished vampire”. - Line Noise

Across a glitching, glimmering constellation of 10 tracks, the record redraws the boundaries of her own subconscious through daring harmonic modulations, glitchy electronica, and frenetic orchestral sequencing. Deeply informed by Nordic folklore, it moves through a journey confronting body dysmorphia, control, and a staccatoing sense of self - reaching toward creative and emotional liberation through ethereal, amorphous avant-pop. Within the work, the artist made the deliberate choice to take the focus away from her physical self - a protest, but also a tribute to the countless versions that form one person. “It’s not about disappearing or being anonymous,” she says, “more about loosening the grip of appearance, and letting the work exist without being defined by it.” Named for Bach’s Inventions - played on piano growing up - Inventio carries a Baroque sensibility: trilling polyphonic textures and lush vocal harmonies rising above it all. Sonic touchstones include Björk, Elizabeth Fraser, and the kulning-style singing of Lena Willemark. Made across three years in Sweden, the album was built without Murex knowing it would become one. Collaborators including Pelle Westlin, Isak Hedtjärn, and Elvira Anderfjärd gave the work what Murex calls “extra arms.” All music videos are directed by Murex herself. “Making this album gave me back authority and power. I hope it’s just as freeing to listen to.”

TRACKLIST

BIO Through his early twenties, Renny self-released a string of homemade albums, sorting out his aesthetic and narrative viewpoint as a musician before his project began in earnest. His self-titled debut was recorded in 2023, collecting older material that served as a proper introduction to him as an artist. Finally released in 2025, the album soon earned him buzz across the indie landscape, and landed him a deal with Mom+Pop. Once more, Split Second feels like a long-awaited debut: Emerging from not only 2023 but all the years before, Split Second catalogues the snapshots and places and people that made Renny the musician he is today. Renny’s life in music began as it does for many of us: a means of escape from the confusing pivot from childhood to teenage years. His parents are working artists, actors who also maintained day jobs, exposing Renny to the grind of a creative life from an early age as they orbited San Francisco in various suburban homes. His teenage years grew more chaotic as he struggled with school. At the same time, he and his brother began playing music together, which led him to phases in various metal and punk bands with friends. Initially, music was his form of community, his way of finding where he belonged. Eventually, while studying film in college, Renny began making music alone, altering the scope, aesthetic, and timbre of his work. As he experienced his first significant heartbreak, he began gravitating towards the music that would come to define his own writing: emotive, folk-tinged indie that seemed the perfect vehicle for the tone of gentle reflection he favors. In comparison to the unfettered expression of his earliest work, Split Second is the first time Renny was making music with some awareness that people would hear it, and in turn the album became a more considered statement. Surrounded by artists of other disciplines in New York, he found himself inspired by the workmanlike approach of painter friends. He hewed new songs into shape, and linked up with co-producer Adrian Olsen in Los Angeles, crafting a humid, layered atmosphere for Split Second — acoustic guitars and plainspoken vocals augmented by orchestration or by waves of distortion nodding to the heavier influences of his early musical DNA. It was only after the fact that the meanings of several songs truly revealed themselves to Renny. From an early age, his musical life was intertwined with his relationship with his older brother. Then, as his brother fell deeper into addiction, Renny continued on solo or with friends. Split Second collects the first songs he wrote after his brother’s passing, and many of them touch on the difference of experiencing his death against his absence while still alive. Once upon a time, Renny’s brother was his biggest musical influence. “It was almost a passing of the torch,” he says. “I’d be a completely different person were it not for us making music together when we were young.” On Split Second, there’s a poignance to him carrying on without him: The thing the siblings once shared becomes the thing that gives Renny strength to reckon with his brother’s death and all the other pitfalls of life. If there’s a central question to Split Second, it’s a universal one: How did we end up here? Grief mingles with breakups and reunions, with desperate treks across the country and moments of stillness in New York City parks. Throughout, these autobiographical moments sit alongside more abstract meditations.

Much of the record traces past lives lived across California and New York, an evocative portrait of how a person comes into being. To Renny, it’s all matter-of-fact, the things that happen and the things we carry with us wherever we end up. A wind reminiscent of Bay Area weather might take him back, a new chord change might take him forward. By the end, in “Longing,” he proclaims “It doesn’t hurt me at all.” This is the mess of life, and take from it what you will.

Quotes: I find Conti’s songwriting somewhat redolent of Elliott Smith’s—not merely because he’s a folksy, acoustic-leaning singer-songwriter who lives on the quieter side of the street, but more so because of his innate ear for melody and penchant for building simple arrangements from the ground-up into layered, lofty constructions. Indeed, at the heart of both Conti’s loosest ditties and most blown-out rockers is a smart pop sensibility that’s undeniably magnetic." -Paste "No matter what he’s writing about, though, Conti has the kind of delivery that simply begs you to stop and listen." - The Line of Best Fit “Renny is a fascinating artist, but [‘Mona Lisa’ is a great example of how he’s able to craft his songs with layered complexity. On paper, he’s a singer-songwriter, but when you close your eyes and really listen, you can hear the depth of his artistry.” - VICE

The Catburgers formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in late 1985, inspired by a chance encounter seeing The Television Personalities live and the explosion of DIY pop that was rolling across the UK at the time. They quickly developed a driving, melodic sound that balanced a love of 60s pop with a moody, almost post-punk edge that fit right in with fellow Scottish pop bands like The Pastels and Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes, as well as the bands coming from labels like Creation and Dreamworld. The Catburgers played often and enthusiastically throughout 1986 and 1987, recording demos that kept the gig offers coming and led Dan Treacy to invite the band to record a single for Dreamworld. Alas, that single didn't materialize at the time and while the band continued to write and play, shifting tastes and work obligations led to the band splitting in 1990, but not before making the recordings that would become Galashiels. Songs like "I've Got a Friend" and "The First Day of Spring" are thrilling, bursting with youthful enthusiasm and solid gold tunes, the kind of songs that would have been on a thousand mixtapes if released at the time. The mood turns darker on the back end of the record, reflecting the band’s post-punk roots. What's really striking is the strength of the song-writing throughout. The Catburgers had a real way with a tune and it feels like a genuine gift to be hearing Galashiels almost 40 years later.

THE STAR ROOM BOYS WHY DO LONELY MEN AND WOMEN WANT TO BREAK EACH OTHER’S HEARTS?

ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME! “A seminal record of Athens' legendary music scene...One of my all-time favorite albums.” —Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers)

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 25, 2026 GENRES: COUNTRY, AMERICANA RECORDED BY: DAVID BARBE (DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, SUGAR DEERHUNTER, UNCLE TUPELO) The Star Room Boys were natural storytellers. They weren’t born into country music; instead, they discovered it as young adults and immediately saw the genre as an ideal vehicle for their tales of twentysomething woe. They brought all of that insight and excitement to their 1998 debut, Why Do Lonely Men and Women Want to Break Each Other’s Hearts?, which presents an idiosyncratic interpretation of cosmic Americana that distinguished them from their alt-country peers and has made them a cult obsession on the Athens, GA music scene ever since. Thirty years later, these songs still pack a punch, and these stories still resonate with hardluck ironies and sadsack philosophizing. The Philadelphia Inquirer called the album “exhilaratingly unfiltered hard country,” and No Depression, the alt-country bible then still in its initial print run, noted, “The music fits the words like bottle to hand.” Lonely Men and Women rode high on Billboard’s Americana chart, and The Star Room Boys started touring further afield. The cult classic finally gets its vinyl debut. Why Do Lonely Men and Women Want to Break Each Other’s Hearts? arrives on vinyl for the first time ever, alongside a CD reissue, on September 25, 2026. HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Chicago label finding the fun in experimental music since 2012

Baltimore-based quintet Crying Laughing joins the Hausu Mountain family with the release of their debut album Talking (as in: Talking Crying Laughing). The lineup of longtime participants in Baltimore’s vibrant experimental underground got together in 2024 with a clear vision for their new band: a fusion of saxophone-led polymetric composition in the Reich/Glass/Riley school of minimalism with the energy and groove of post-punk and the rhythmic sensibilities of Moondog’s street recordings; head music as much as body music. Saxophonist Christian Best’s and drummer Jen Kirby’s collaboration in the band Smoke Bellow (who released LPs on labels like Trouble in Mind and Moon Glyph before ending in 2024) formed the nucleus of Crying Laughing. Steve Strohmeier plays keyboards, and has toured or recorded with a slew of Baltimore luminaries including Beach House, Dan Deacon, Daniel Higgs, and Lower Dens. Bassist Marc Miller formed the math-punk band OXES in 1998 and the ever-shifting experimental ensemble Microkingdom in 2006. Saxophonist Rose Hammer Burt participates in Baltimore musical collectives that orbit the legendary experimental venue The Red Room and its associated improvised music festival High Zero. With the freewheeling nature of the band members’ omnivorous menu of projects in mind, the laser focus of Crying Laughing’s music, with its meticulously juxtaposed dual saxophone leads and lock-groove rhythm section, might initially come as a surprise. Cat #: HAUSMO 158 Contrary to many bands who start off struggling to clarify a sound or Artist: Crying Laughing find time to play together for the many hours required to gel, Crying Album: Talking exploit the fact that they all live within walking distance of Formats: CD, Tape Laughing Label: Hausu Mountain each other in Baltimore to woodshed their ideas until they crystallize into CD Edition Tape Edition pored-over final forms. Jen Kirby describes her atypical drumming style as “a response to the people I’m playing with and my natural technical limitations due to total hackery of technique,” yet that self-taught idiosyncrasy charges Talking with the key confluence of robotic exactitude and post-punk mania that any situation requires. Kirby’s performances on a modified kit with a tiny snare and rototoms with distinctly tuned pitches place her drums in a particular mid-to-upper register in the mix - creating ambiguous near-melodies in the rhythms akin to Moondog’s street recordings with his amalgam of strikable objects. The drum patterns she latches into leave plenty of space to fill in for her band members, who frequently join the grid with auxiliary percussion parts of their own. Marc Miller is all restraint, deploying his bass surges in the perfect gaps in Crying Laughing’s criss-crossing arrangements to maintain the groove. When he takes the lead role with a galloping bassline, we hear every fine-grain detail of his low end tone as he prods his comrades up into higher peaks of intensity. Threading between the two polarities of the saxophones and the rhythm section, Steve Strohmeier’s sampled keyboard instruments color in the open space with lush harmonies and walls of texture. His harmonium imbues their music with moments of reverence, discovering meditative nearambient oases within tumultuous surroundings, while his clattered piano and ping-ponging marimba lines take the opposite tactic by stacking even more layers onto the busy rhythms.

Anton Pearson – Driving Through Belgium World of Echo

Driving Through Belgium is the debut solo album from Anton Pearson, best known as one of the guitarists in respected post-punk outfit Squid. The title grew from a track that felt like the record’s centrepiece, which itself came from the recurring image of extensive periods on the road across the continent. It is a record shaped in the margins of touring, and finessed in the in-between hours. Across six pieces, Pearson leans into atmosphere, texture and space. It is ambient in spirit, adjacent to contemporary classical in feeling, but composed less with notes in mind than with sound itself. The compositions rarely began with harmony or melody, with Pearson instead responding to his environment and sounds in real time, placing trust in his instinct. Although initial inspiration came from the road, the album was recorded in a studio he shares in Brighton, and marks his first fully solo project made in that setting. It gave him access to not only new tools and techniques, but a hitherto un-experienced freedom. Much of the process began experimentally, feeding instruments into unfamiliar chains, pitching loops into unexpected registers and playing with previously unused synthesizers simply to see what they might reveal. Many of the sounds were created out of pure curiosity, wanting to understand a piece of equipment or technology, and then following wherever it led.

World Of Echo is proud to announce Fully Nowhere: a World Resources Archive, compiling material drawn from limited lathe 7” singles and LPs released by the Aotearoa/New Zealand label, World Resources, predominantly across the 1990s. Supplemented by previously unreleased archival recordings, and material drawn from recent sessions, it’s a revelatory listen, a judicious selection of drone, noise pop, fractured electronics and laminal improvisation from the small community of musicians surrounding the legendary Wellington free noise trio, Surface of the Earth, whose membership drove World Resources. It’s music that hasn’t found its way into too many ears until now. The World Resources catalogue was both small in its number of releases, and miniscule in edition. The lathe-cuts they released, all made in a record cutting studio in the small Southern Alps town of Geraldine by DIY vinyl manufacturer Peter King, typically didn’t make their way beyond a tiny clutch of devoted collectors – if that. It took the re-release of Surface of the Earth’s 1995 double LP, firstly on CD by Bruce Russell’s Corpus Hermeticum, then again on Utech and finally on vinyl by Black Editions, to draw attention to the body of music made by the World Resources crew. Listening over and over again to this music, in quiet thrall to its renegade spirit, its documentation of the visions of a tight-knit crew of unassuming artists from Wellington, I keep wondering: How did they do this, and how did they know to do it both so neatly, and yet so organically? Fully Nowhere, now here, is a radiance of tone, a blossom of sound, a haze of days.

THE SICK MAN OF EUROPE THE INTERMITTENT SIGNAL street date: file under: territory:

“Man has such a predilection for systems and abstract deductions that he is ready to distort the truth intentionally, he is ready to deny the evidence of his senses only to justify his logic” Fyodor Dostoevsky - Notes from Underground (1864) The Intermittent Signal is the sound of resistance. In the year since The Sick Man Of Europe’s debut album was released, the world has moved on. Steady hands have slipped from the levers of power, logic has shifted underground and the message grows more urgent with every passing day. Repetition has been relearned and the machine rhythms repurposed, this time with increased intensity. Arrangements have moved beyond the bare bones economy of the first record and there’s a newfound melodicism in places. Clarity and conviction ring true through the static and noise, while utopian ideas to remodel a broken system gain traction. This is a rejection of the attention economy and a call to reconnect through community and organisation. Those simple acts that were once commonplace have become increasingly radical as new fractures emerge. “Through repetition the message has gained weight and become something more urgent,” The Sick Man Of Europe explains. “The vehicle for this message needed to evolve, grow to gain the strength to carry it. We’ve landed on something more expansive, immediate and immersive. Less is more. Until it isn’t. thesickmanofeurope.net instagram.com/thesickmanofeurope_ facebook.com/thesickmanofeuropemusik tiktok.com/@thesickmanofeurope

.multibeat — OOO Dutch collective .multibeat return with OOO their third album and debut for Sonar Kollektiv. Rooted in Utrecht’s vibrant musical community, the trio of Boudewijn Pleij (keys), Thijs van Zutphen (bass) and Aron Smit (drums) blend hip-hop, jazz and beat culture into a groove-driven sound inspired by artists such as Robert Glasper, J Dilla and the contemporary UK jazz scene. The three musicians first met while studying at the conservatoire in Utrecht, initially performing as a live backing band under the name Muddy Grease before evolving into a production-focused collective. Over the years they have built a reputation for connecting the worlds of jazz, hip-hop and contemporary beat music through an ever-expanding network of collaborators, while helping to foster a vibrant and experimental local scene around them.

Following their debut album Toolbox (2022), created alongside Dutch beatmaker Noflik, and the acclaimed Channel Island (2024), which featured appearances from Pete Philly, Joya Mooi, GINGE and Marcus “Tennishu” Tenney of Butcher Brown, .multibeat now arrive at their most fully realised statement to date. While the more crossover-oriented Have A Nice Weekend EP hinted at new directions, OOO sees the trio reconnect with the more eclectic and exploratory side of their musical identity. Collaboration remains central to the album. Featuring contributions from Casiio, Säm Wilder, vAn, TOS, Neema Nekesa, Noflik and longtime collaborator Paul van de Calseijde, the record moves effortlessly between soulful vocal songs, jazz-infused instrumentals and rhythm-driven beat excursions. Tracks such as Please Hold Me, Hold Me Down and Monochrom showcase the group’s gift for emotionally resonant songwriting, while pieces like Flyyy, Use Your Noggin and Rhapsody highlight the trio’s instinctive chemistry as musicians and producers.

The third part in Jon Hassell’s Pentimento trilogy captures the much-missed artist performing as part of a trio with Rick Cox and John von Seggern in London in 2015, in what would turn out to be his final ever concert. Carefully edited and mixed by Jeff Rona into something much more than a traditional ‘live album’; themes, motifs and riffs from his critically adored albums Listening To Pictures and Seeing Through Sound occur throughout these unique, semi-improvised mutations, making this a fitting final volume in the late career renaissance of the Pentimento series. It contains a liner note essay by Jon Hassell that inspired the title, whilst the cover utilises Leh C’est Beau, a classic painting by Jon’s close friend Mati Klarwein, familiar to music fans through his striking 1970s album sleeves for the likes of Miles Davis and Santana. ‘Pentimento’ is defined as “the appearance in a painting of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over”, a methodology that Jon applied in a musical sense throughout his career, refining and developing his approach over time. Alongside the release of Music Is Invisible, Ndeya have also put together a triple disc anthology of all three albums in the series.

TWO MODERN CLASSICS, BACK IN STOCK ON CD Listening To Pictures pen·ti·men·to / noun Reappearance in a painting of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over. First new album in nine years by a musical visionary and hugely influential figure in new music. Continuing his lifelong exploration of the possibilities of the studio, fragments of performance are sampled, looped, overdubbed and re-arranged into beguiling unexpected shapes. Hassell applies the painterly technique of ‘pentimento’ to the arrangements, teasing out texture by the careful overlaying of sound, or a carefully timed reveal of the delicate bones pinning the frame of a track together. Smeared, gauzy, gorgeous atmospherics to perfectly soundtrack a vertical listening experience.

Seeing Through Sound “Listen as if you were being told a secret” - Federico Fellini A companion piece to 2018’s Listening To Pictures, this second volume in the pentimento series presents eight new tracks by the music visionary, continuing his lifelong exploration of the possibilities of recombination and musical gene-splicing. Pentimento is defined as the “reappearance in a painting of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over” and this is evident in the innovative production style that ‘paints with sound’ using overlapping nuances to create an undefinable and intoxicating new palette.

*Dur-Dur Band Volume 3 & 4 Funk, disco and Somali soul from 1980s Mogadishu* In the 1980s, Mogadishu was home to one of East Africa’s most vibrant music scenes, where Somali melodies met funk, disco, reggae, soul and jazz. At its centre was Dur-Dur Band, founded by drummer Adan Handal and childhood friend Isse Dahir Qassim. By 1984, Dur-Dur had become the house band at the legendary Jubba Hotel, developing an explosive live sound that was both deeply local and remarkably modern. While their early cassette releases, Volumes 1 and 2, spread across Somalia, Volumes 3 and 4 marked the band’s creative peak. Recorded during a time of personal tragedy and growing national crisis, the albums captured Dur-Dur pushing musical boundaries. Following the departure of singer Shimaali Ahmed Shimaali and founding bandleader Isse Dahir Qassim’s tragic death, Adan Handal guided the band into new sonic territory. Volume 4 became one of their most adventurous recordings, combining electronic percussion, unusual drum textures and reggae-inspired grooves with the unmistakable spirit of Somali music. Today, Dur-Dur’s music stands as proof of a creativity that survived war, displacement and decades of silence.

THINGS THAT WILL MAKE YOU LOVE LEENALCHI

• • • • LEENALCHI is led by the great composer Jang Young-Gyu, who has undoubtedly scored all your favorite

Tours of the U.S. and EU are planned for Fall 2026. Limited edition black version only variant. Leenalchi will play live sessions at KCRW and (rumor has it) KEXP. Opened for Japanese Breakfast and will open for Geese this fall.

Korean horror movies, including The Wailing, Train To Busan, and the Good, The Bad, The Weird.

FILM SCREENINGS (IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GYOPO)

The release follows an extremely successful and eventful year for LEENALCHI. They had their first-ever North American tour, opening for Japanese Breakfast at Stern Grove, sessions at KCRW and (rumor has it) KEXP, and in the fall, they’ll be on the East Coast, including opening for Geese at Forest Hills on the very same date this record comes out (October 2).

Sugungga sounds like animals talking to each other over tripped-out bass lines. It gets its name from the old Korean folk tale about a clever and loyal turtle who tries to lure a rabbit underwater and into the lair of a Dragon King who has come down with an illness that can only be cured by the rabbit’s liver. What is the fate of the rabbit? This fall, you will find out.

The Koreatown Oddity – Purdy Stones Throw Records | STH2530 October 2nd, 2026 | Eco Vinyl | Hip Hop

LA native The Koreatown Oddity returns for his fourth album on Stones Throw. Purdy is the proving ground for an avant-garde rapper tackling being a father and partner with the boundless confidence of a child’s imagination. Purdy sees Koreatown soundtrack a knight’s first battle, document the cultivation of a beautiful lawn and contemplate if anyone really means it when they say ""have a great weekend"" – all while realizing that he's now part of something bigger. Purdy paints the complete portrait of the man Dominique Purdy and artist The Koreatown Oddity together: musician, father, and peddler of the absurd.

The Koreatown Oddity is a Los Angeles native rapper, producer, filmmaker, writer, humorist and DIY/underground staple.

File Under: Electronic, Dance, Pop, House For Fans of: Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Overmono, fred again.. Grammy-nominated producer Baauer’s third full-length album, U, calls back to his earliest musical obsessions – the block rockin’ hits that ruled the airwaves in the ‘00s, and the mixes he discovered on Friday night radio. Executive-produced by Hudson Mohawke, U plays like a long-lost Radio 1 Essential Mix, its 16 continuous tracks paying homage to the sample-digging masters of ‘00s dance domination. From the sparkling beat collage of ‘Supersonic’ to the big-booty drops on ‘Calling Out For U’ and delirious disco-house on ‘Better’, the album’s singles emulate the crossover thinking of Y2K’s biggest dance acts. Deeper in the folds, the self-taught studio nerd’s quirks are left unironed, underlining his long track record in the club trenches. Crowned with vocal performances from Aluna, Brazy, Betsy and labelmate KUČKA, U is polished to a shine by piano/keys from Eli Teplin (Justin Bieber, Charli XCX) and additional production from pro studio duo Parisi. Thirteen years on from his overnight breakthrough with the double-platinum ‘Harlem Shake’, Baauer presents his most personal and emotional album yet – a celebration of precious memories, new connections, and an unswerving delight in the search for the perfect sample. OVERVIEW The second album by Fat Dog is titled Cancel Me (I’m Tired). The reason that the group – Joe Love, Chris Hughes, Morgan Wallace, Ellis Dickson, Michael Dunlop, Dillon Harrison and Jed Bevington – are tired is because they have spent the period since WOOF.’s release spreading their raucous, infectious and irresistible bark around the world. The reason that they want you to cancel them is that they’ve been around the world and had enough of its shit. They don’t care what the world thinks, so go ahead and do what you need to do. With Cancel Me (I’m Tired), Fat Dog have created an exhilarating, swaggering, panoramic, inventive, re-inventive, re-re-inventive electro-punk-art-pop-rock’n’roll-space-country triumph that deserves all the adjectives. Over ten mind-bending and melodic tracks, it blends electro-pop anthems, cascading rave bangers, cowboy-tinged pitstops and swirling psychedelia. It possesses all the rabid frenzy and electrifying excitement of their debut but now delivered on a grand and glorious scale. Big, big things are ahead. Fat Dog are only just getting going.

On Passing Fires, his follow-up to The Weather Up There, drummer and composer Jeremy Cunningham, alongside a tight circle of collaborators, transforms intimate piano sketches, family-room recordings, and richly layered studio performances into a vivid meditation on memory, love, and change. Vibrant, emotional, and full of unexpected turns, the album darts between hypnotic grooves, psychedelic textures, and tender poetic ballads, balancing homemade warmth with striking sonic detail.

Passing Fires is a kaleidoscope of different styles, genres, fidelities, and personalities, with a dozen top tier contributing musicians, with production and songwriting assists from Josh Johnson, Jeff Parker, Sen Morimoto, Makaya McCraven, and other luminaries of the current jazz scene that connects Los Angeles and Chicago.

“...innovative fusion of jazz...imbued with a sensitive, meticulous studio wizardry...evokes the pop of ‘Bennie and the Jets’ or ‘Super Rich Kids’...” –Pitchfork “Cunningham’s music is lush and optimistic, painted in the cool, rich emotional tones of nostalgia and memory...” –Bandcamp Daily “Like Geri Allen, Cunningham is as interested in life and in the unnameable forces that surround and penetrate us.” –Free Jazz Collective Upcoming Represses via Northern Spy CD-NS-122, LP-NS-122 Jeremy Cunningham, The Weather Up There (8/18/26, CD UPC 309272738100, LP UPC 309272738094) LP-NS-154 Jeremy Cunningham, Dustin Laurenzi, Paul Bryan A Better Ghost (11/13/2026, UPC 309272739824)

Malkmus Meets Coltrane? “Insane!” - Stephen Malkmus “If you’re a Pavement fan, you owe it to yourself to check out what these guys do with the songbook. If you’re a jazz fan, these tunes might as well be undiscovered standards” - Allmusic "This is fire-breathing music in the tradition of free jazz legends Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Shepp that sends the messy spirit of Pavement down roads the rockers could never have imagined." - Tom Moon (NPR) Celebrating the 20th anniversary of four jazz greats getting into the studio to add some swagger to slacker with this double LP of an enchanted rumble through Pavement cuts with a free jazz slant! Dramatically expanded with bonus material, it includes four CD only bonus tracks, features liners by Jim Allen, and newly revised art by Steve Keene! This album sprang from one question: what album would we want to buy which doesn't exist? Sort of like the idea behind fantasy sports leagues applied to music, first came the lineup selection. Recorded at Electric Ladyland studios in ‘04, these four jazz heavyweights and two eager but anxious entrepreneurs arrived at Studio B for four days of musical alchemy. "It's a heavyweight jazz album with masterfully crafted and soulful arrangements" - NPR

Hayden The Recent Past

For more than thirty years, Hayden has built a body of work from moments in life that can easily pass unnoticed. His talent is to build grandeur around small events, not just within songs but as an accumulation across his whole career. Taken together, his ten studio albums amount to an ongoing conversation about family, memory, love, loss, absurdity, and the strange beauty hidden inside ordinary days. The realization that today’s routine may someday become the part of your life you miss most. Despite its title, Hayden's new album The Recent Past isn’t nostalgic so much as observant. It reflects on the strange feeling of longing for a time that wasn’t all that long ago, but it’s also about trying to stay rooted in the present while everything around us speeds up. It is a rich addition to Hayden’s continuing search for unsung moments. There’s heartache on this album, some frank declarations, a lot of comfort and danceable surprises. After years of mixing his own records, Hayden gave the final mixes to Grammy-winning engineer Tom Schick, whose work with Jeff Tweedy, Wilco, Mavis Staples and Willie Nelson had long been an inspiration. Adding subtle colours on the album are drummer Adam Hindle, pedal steel player Matt Kelly, fiddler Miranda Mulholland and upright bassist Ben Whiteley. The Recent Past is the perfect record to play when things are coming at you, when you want to take a breath, reflect, escape. Whatever memories or struggles play out you can hum to heartbreak, have lunch with your kid, know that trouble is out there for everyone but somehow this is still a beautiful day. retail release: digital release: artist: title: label: format: cat #: UPC: genre:

BIO It's been seven years since Detroit singer and songwriter Stef Chura released her last album, Midnight. Plenty of dramatic and life-altering things happened in those seven years: She broke off an engagement, she left Detroit for New Orleans (and then Louisville), she gave birth to her first child, she ultimately returned to Detroit. But those events are not the true story of Dancing Alone on the Concrete, her third album and second for Saddle Creek. Here's what happened while Stef Chura was writing the songs that would eventually become Dancing Alone on the Concrete: She practiced the piano and the guitar a whole lot, and she went on dates. Single for the first time in years, Chura used the 2020 Covid lockdowns as an excuse to start over in New

Orleans, where, like everyone else, she was mostly stuck indoors, unable to tour or play locally. "I was just writing and practicing," she says. "I was going back and forth, playing songs on the guitar and the piano, and it lent to the writing process in a nice way." Chura's singing voice has always been unique—it's brassy but contained, like a muted trumpet. The album, recorded at Athens' Chase Park Transduction studio with David Barbe (Sugar) and Andy LeMaster (Now It’s Overhead) and produced by Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo, even features R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and Mike Mills on "Danny." Much of Dancing Alone on the Concrete concerns the ways in which our need for love convinces us to betray

ourselves just to keep the other person around. "I tried to change my thoughts for you, I tried to rearrange who I was for you," she sings in "The Concrete," "But you found out." It's an unusual framing—the issue isn't the narrator's selling herself out, it's her getting caught doing so. "When I was in New Orleans, the freedom to date was exciting," Chura says. "But there's this search for love in the album, and no real arrival at any point in time." Dancing Alone on the Concrete's key is right there, the adverb in the album's title: alone. Not loneliness, but personal comfort, self-affirmation, healthy solitude. And while these songs never quite arrive at the love they're searching for, the rightful object of her affection is right there in every song, in the form of the person singing them.

Vanishing Twin - Archives

Shapeshifting trio Vanishing Twin present their new album ‘Archives’, a collage of postmodern songcraft that finds transcendence in the shared experience of creation. The album’s title alludes to Vanishing Twin’s distinctive approach of listening to, piecing together and reworking daily recording sessions. Founding member Cathy Lucas describes the process as “gathering material together, riffing with it, turning it around on itself, trying to put the pieces together and create a story with it”. With Lucas now relocated to rural France, and Valentina Magaletti and Susumu Mukai in London, the three connected by swapping songs and fragments of instrumentals in a virtual studio space. Geographic distance is bridged by their hivemind creativity, with multi-instrumentalist input from each member. Each player brings a wide experience of collaboration and improvisation, with listening back and editing studio sessions an integral part of the creative process. Concepts of authorship and ownership dissolve in Vanishing Twin’s music, as members swap instruments and lose themselves in the collaborative moment. The archives of the album title become documents of the trio’s collective intelligence.

The chaotic energy of ‘Archives’ pushes Vanishing Twin into unfamiliar shapes and directions. Out of their comfort zones, the trio find new moments of enlightenment and delight. Deep in the mix, you might hear Magaletti picking up the bass, Mukai unexpectedly sitting in on drums, or Lucas slipping chameleon-like between the gaps.

Track List

‘Archives’ refines Vanishing Twin’s model of collective music making, where egos are dispelled in playful games of mix and match, and creativity flows between the three multi-instrumentalists. Operating between and outside conventional categories of genre, they sit alongside fellow travellers such as Tara Clerkin Trio and Still House Plants, stretching the idea of the contemporary music ensemble. A decade into their existence, Vanishing Twin are more mercurial than ever.

Trá Pháidín– Cloch 's Claí World of Echo

Trá Pháidín are a mutable collective of musicians who are geographically, culturally and mentally torn between Conamara Theas, Cathair Chorcaí, Ciarraí, Uíbh Fhailí, Sligeach and Port Láirge, active in one form or another since 2019. The music they make, which to date has mostly been self-released, is of an ambitious breadth, embracing traditional Irish absurdity, jazz, folk and krautrock influences, whilst remaining tantalisingly beyond any one specific understanding of either the world around them or even themselves. More defined however, is their overall conceptual approach, focusing upon original Gaelic music and what lies beyond simply “conas atá tú?”. Cloch ‘s Claí (trans. Stone & Wall), their first record to be released by World of Echo, develops their established interests into more adventurous waters (and walls!) than ever. Based on the historical significance embedded into dry-stone walls, the album presents a satirical view of Éire’s relationship with her native tongue and the Gaeltacht (regions where Gaeilge - Irish Gaelic - remains the primary language). Constructed of ten tracks, each representative of a stone in a metaphorical stone-wall, Cloch ‘s Claí draws from styles of improvisation in Irish traditional music, exploring avenues of ornamentation and accompaniment in the tradition. As such, the arrangement changes in every performance, a new stonewall articulated each time - the recording on this album represents just one such arrangement in one such performance. Inspired by Myles na gCopaleen’s An Béal Bocht, the wall comes to embody a variety of themes scattered across the landscape and psyche of na Gaeltachtaí - tokenism, housing, gentry politics, ribbon developments and so on. The result is a music expressive of regional styles in traditional music, krautrock, free jazz, post-rock, minimalism and drone presented in a way that feels instinctively fluid and reflective of a hushed existentialism from the west of Ireland.

David Norland is an Emmy-nominated English composer, known for his scores for drama and documentary, alongside his experimental choral and electronic music. Bringing stories to life through sound, he received critical acclaim for his debut solo album ‘Glam Tear Stain’ (2019) and is set to release follow-up album ‘La Source’ in June 2026 via Denovali Records. Relocated back to his London home after many years in Los Angeles, and free from years of drug and alcohol problems, recent commissions for two choral works allowed Norland to return to the innocent origin of his musical world, and his experience as a parent prompted a lot of outward reflection. What kind of world are we leaving to our children? Inspired by his score to the forthcoming silent black and white film ‘Carousel’ (2026), Norland found other music emerging that refused to be ignored. The film’s director opened the door to an entirely free scoring process – no temp music, no expectation, no guidelines, just pure intuitive expression. ‘La Source’ draws on this experience, alongside his childhood as a touring chorister, the honkytonk upright piano in the north-east London bedroom of his early 20s, his early recording experiments with a TASCAM 4-track cassette recorder, and his intense preoccupation with bells, flutes, stone architecture, and mysticism. From the haunting, choral beauty of ‘E-Car Soul’ to the breezy album title track, Norland blends minimalist classical structures with electronics. A unified tapestry of blended voices, harmonies and textures, ‘La Source’ is a deeply emotional and melancholic journey for Norland. “In the end, I’m looking to find meaning through the music, like when I was a kid singing in choirs. But I get the most sense of meaning through transcendent experiences, rather than anything intellectual or dogmatic. I have to feel it, not think it. I’m trying to make work that’s luminous, wondrous, shimmering and strange, so I can keep having those experiences,” says Norland. On his inspiration for the album, Norland adds, “I love making patterns in things and finding patterns. That’s why minimalism was so enticing to me, the patterns are so explicit. I love word play and anagrams. The big sadness coming through as I was making the record is this clarity over the future of my kids. Everything else is a complete distraction. This incredible nurturing planet and its ecosystem are being rapidly destroyed, and the forces destroying it are relentless and punitive. And they seem to be fine with consigning our children to live in an evermore-hostile wasteland. You can’t pretend that’s not coming, if you do I think you’re lying to yourself. And perhaps eventually it will be the fact that people love their kids that will stir wider fear and action. It’s hard to think of anything more connected to the idea of spirit.” The result is the reflective, ecstatic, mystical and sad world of ‘La Source.’ Norland’s screen work includes the award-winning documentary Anvil! The Story Of Anvil (2008), directed by Sacha Gervasi, and since 2010, he has composed much of the music for US broadcasting giant ABC’s primetime news documentaries. His work for ABC is broadcast in the US and around the world on a daily basis. In 2012, he was the music supervisor for Hitchcock (2012) featuring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren & Scarlett Johansson and in 2017, he teamed up once again with Gervasi for the score to November Criminals starring Chloe Moretz and Ansel Elgort. The following year, he composed the score for the Emmy-nominated HBO film My Dinner With Herve, starring Peter Dinklage and Jamie Dornan. Norland will be performing the score of Carousel later this year, and the score itself will be a forthcoming release on Denovali. 2026 will also see the release of documentary All Permits Secured, a valentine to the history of EDM, featuring Norland’s score.
