Redeye Label of the Month Q&A

Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight! This Issue: Earth Libraries (Bryant Saxon)

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

Bryant’s journey into the music industry began in Birmingham, Alabama, playing in local bands and immersing himself in the city’s vibrant DIY music scene. Along the way, he helped friends launch their label, Step Pepper Records, learning the ins and outs of independent music, physical releases, and artist development. Those experiences eventually inspired him to start Earth Libraries, a label built around the idea of discovering, preserving, and sharing extraordinary music, whether it’s a brand-new indie record or a forgotten gem from decades past.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

It’s a mix, and we love it that way. We want Earth Libraries to feel like an actual library, a place where listeners can wander between eras, genres, and scenes. If there’s a throughline, it’s music with heart and a strong sense of place. Our catalog leans toward indie rock, folk, Americana, and experimental sounds, but you’ll also find soul, country, gospel, jazz, and plenty of surprises.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?

We’ve joked for years about launching an archival imprint called Lost Tapes, inspired by Mad Anthony’s The Lost Tapes, which became one of our most beloved releases. It would focus entirely on forgotten recordings, unreleased albums, and overlooked artists who deserve a second chance to be heard.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

A crate digger. A curious listener. Someone who gets excited about finding a forgotten record from 1974 and an exciting new indie band in the same afternoon.

Where do you go to search for new music?

We’re huge fans of Aquarium Drunkard and New Commute. Both consistently champion adventurous music with thoughtful writing and genuine enthusiasm. Their playlists, radio programs, and editorial coverage have introduced us to countless artists over the years.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

One project we’re especially proud of is Butterfly In The Sky by The Octopus Project. Like many people, we grew up with Reading Rainbow, and the opportunity to help celebrate its legacy felt incredibly meaningful. The packaging was also our most ambitious to date, featuring a butterfly die-cut jacket, a pop-up butterfly inside the gatefold, and splatter vinyl inspired by a rainbow.

What is your stance on color vinyl?

We’re unapologetically pro-color vinyl. While we understand the audiophile arguments, we see vinyl as both a listening experience and a visual medium. Thoughtful variants can help tell the story of a release. That said, we don’t think every album needs forty different versions.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

The rising cost of vinyl is challenging for labels, artists, and fans alike. At the same time, we’re encouraged that people continue to value physical media. We’ve also been excited to see CDs experience a resurgence, especially among younger listeners looking for affordable ways to build music collections. We appreciate the format for its fidelity, and we like the expansion of the Super CD formats.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Discovery has become increasingly algorithm-driven. Editorial playlists, music publications, and independent curators still matter, but they no longer hold the same influence they once did. It can make it harder for independent artists to break through, but it’s also pushed labels like ours to become more creative. Encouragingly, we’re seeing renewed interest in curation, physical media, and community-driven music discovery.

How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?

Fun fact: streaming actually uses more energy than the entire vinyl industry!! But sustainability is important to us. We regularly utilize recycled vinyl options whenever possible and try to be thoughtful about manufacturing. More broadly, we believe physical media encourages a more intentional relationship with music. We also believe the industry should continue exploring ways to reduce waste (and excessive variants) while supporting artists and fans alike.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:

Seasick Records in Birmingham, Alabama, has championed Earth Libraries since the beginning. They’ve carried our releases, hosted events, and supported us through every stage of our growth. We’d also love to shout out Vinyl Tap in Nashville, another incredible shop that’s been a longtime supporter of the label.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?

Recently, we worked on an archival compilation featuring long-lost Alabama recordings and invited contemporary artists to cover some of the songs. One of those tracks was originally written by Tommy Stuart of the band Rubberband. Tommy had always dreamed of hearing another artist interpret his music, but it never happened during the band’s original run. Decades later, we were able to make that dream a reality.

That’s what we’d like Earth Libraries to be remembered for: connecting generations of musicians, preserving overlooked stories, and ensuring that great music, whether new or forgotten, continues to find its audience.

OVERVIEW

John Cale was never very kind to his solo debut, Vintage Violence. When it was released in early 1970, Cale had been out of The Velvet Underground for less than two years. He wanted to prove he could be the songwriter, the person penning the words and melodies behind which a band could work. “I was masked on Vintage Violence,” he wrote much later. “You’re not really seeing the personality.” Indeed, Cale’s personality as a polyglot seemingly interested in everything emerged more and more on his next two solo albums, his only two for Reprise: 1972’s bracing and exploratory classical sojourn, The Academy in Peril, and 1973’s masterclass in anxious but accessible songcraft, Paris 1919. By reissuing both records in tandem, Domino — Cale’s home now for a dozen years — affirms the artistic fearlessness Cale then fostered at the edge of 30, when all of music seemed like one inviting playpen.

This remastered and expanded reissue of Paris 1919 is a testament to that progress and the patience that engendered it. In previously unreleased tapes, Cale teases his new chemical habits as he tries to find his way through “Half Past France,” then attempts new vocal arrangements for its beginning in an alternate version. (New liner notes by music journalist Grayson Haver Currin explore this process, too.) The gentle, swaying version of “Hanky Panky Nohow” that eventually made Paris 1919 was the right one, but a brilliant “Drone Mix” included here, with Cale’s viola seesawing in hypnotic waves, shows just how much he and Thomas were willing to tinker with these tunes, to test the bounds of songcraft. Appended at the end of these extras, “Fever Dream (You’re a Ghost)” — a new Cale composition that perfectly flows out of yet another mix of “Hanky Panky Nohow” — shows that he’s still doing just that into his 80s.

Limited Edition Double LP pressed on Blue Vinyl for Indie Retail

When Pulp made their return last year promising “more”, they really weren’t kidding. “More” was the title of the Sheffield band’s first album in 24 years, and with songs that swooned, swaggered, sashayed and strutted, it quickly became a fan favorite amongst the group’s starred catalog, topping charts at home and abroad. Then there was more… and “More”… onstage.

Following the record’s release last summer, Pulp hit the road, playing their own shows and headlining festivals the globe over. Songs from the new album enthralled and dazzled, while the modern masterpieces drawn from across Pulp’s career moved hearts and minds as one.

To celebrate and capture those moments of musical brilliance, and to offer listeners yet more again, this summer Pulp release “Live!”, an album of recordings drawn from their iconic show at The O2 in London on 13 June 2025. An ultimate setlist, which saw the band deliver a two-part performance as they drew on songs from right across their storied career, “Live!” does not just showcase the dexterity and rich musical tapestry Pulp weave when they come together onstage; it also captures the spirit of their live shows.

From moments of communal exhilaration to Jarvis Cocker’s candid confessionals; heart-swelling outpourings of love, to arena-filling sing-alongs; Pulp’s words and music have always unlocked unique, intimate worlds making “Live!” a truly immersive portal to the place where those tracks ‘come alive’ – onstage.

“A concert is an event where songs come back to life. That’s why this album is called ‘Live!’” explains Jarvis Cocker of this unique record in the Pulp canon. “It’s both a statement of fact (it’s a recording of a live band) & a challenge (come on! everyone come alive!).”

Piano Works 2016-2026

Stones Throw Records | STH2527

August 28th 2026 | Vinyl | Instrumental

Piano Works 2016-2026 collects fourteen impromptu pieces by composer and producer John Carroll Kirby, written whenever he had the opportunity to sit at a piano while on the road. These mostly solo works for piano were recorded in Los Angeles, Rome, Tokyo, Wollongong (Australia), New Zealand and London.

Piano Works marks a departure from the full-band sound of recent albums Blowout and Septet, which Kirby has spent the past years performing live around the world. The album is a study in piano repertoire: Baroque, Romantic, Impressionist, jazz, minimalist, atonal, and more. Most of the pieces have an impromptu feel – improvised, or meant to sound improvised, or at least written in one sitting.

The collected pieces on Piano Works are a document of Kirby’s life as a piano player and touring musician, and “serve as the melodic / harmonic lexicon for what would inform all my other compositions of the past ten years.”

John Carroll Kirby’s most recent studio album Blowout (2023) was acclaimed in Pitchfork, Clash, Uncut, Mojo, KEXP, Blackbird Spyplane, and more, and received radio support from NTS Radio, BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 2, KEXP, KCRW, and more.

Kirby has toured extensively around the world, with several headline tours in the UK & Europe, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, and North America, as well as two major North America tours opening for Khruangbin.

Additional touring will take place in Fall and Winter 2026.

John Carroll Kirby has scored two feature films, and his solo piano song “Walking Through a House Where a Family Has Lived” formed the score for Oscar-nominated short film Retirement Plan

Support for first Piano Works single “Suntory” from The Guardian, The New Cue, With Guitars, KCRW, NTS Radio, J-WAVE, PBS, and more. Posted by Solange on Instagram.

CHROME TY SEGALL

SALES BAN:

In the spring of 2025, right around the release of Possession, Ty Segall started hearing voices, calmly at first, but soon screaming: “Get the band back together!!!”

Immediately, his mind began working, creating, collecting and collating riffs for songs, an album that he and the band Ben Boye, Evan Burrows, Mikal Cronin & Emmett Kelly will come to all call Chrome.

Chrome the element, not the album is shiny, reflective, resistant to corrosion. Chrome the album’s got that too: in hard-springing rock strung with lyrically allusive passages moving furtive and bleak through labyrinthine paths in the darkness. Joining social phenomena and autobiographical dream imagery in song-sequenced, head-snapping flashes, hitting left/right hemispheres fast and furiously. In massive riffs and thudding power in the rhythm core, twin-guitar attack and parry, tightly arrayed lines of fuzz distortion, keyboard textures of bright and thickness. All mixed immediate and flexible, colorful and clean, spicy-sweet, with Ty ’s vocals of vinegar and sand, wine and grains of silver nitrate, pointing the way. That’s Chrome.

The band came together fast and hard, their five heads writing half the songs here, with others featuring Ty and Evan collabing, Matt Yoka and Denée Segall writing some too. Accounting, we believe, for its high-performing social nature and hot rocks. Its guitars slammed immaculate, big waves & dark apocolypto energy bonfires on the beach, from proto to punk to grunch, projected from the crowd-sourced energy of their mind-meld to shake the cages of the larger collective beyond.

Isle Peaks Watch Your Step

In the wake of the acclaimed Inland See, the on-growing analog ecosystem being animated for ten albums now by Bitchin Bajas boasts new high energy views.

“Isle Peaks” speaks of directions in beats of time, weather and the heart to wherever coast they found themselves when they got it all laid out.

Sourced from Inland See sessions, these cuts were subjected to further edits and tweaks, with electroacoustic textures of sampled kalimba, field recordings, autoharp and EWI to activate and transport divergent quadrants of the Bajas cinematic universe.

The first two songs were previously released digitally on Qobuz in Jan ’26. “Watch your Step” has been added to balance scales and acidity for the "Isle Peaks" vinyl edition.

“Isle Peaks,” throbs with the heat and humidity of an unknown landmass, ascending to signal-splitting heights on both atmospheric and ecstatic scales, the most wired ever but calm, then trancing ambiently in heavy modern electronic church thick with drone and atmosphere. High-energy music, first to dance, then to dream! The escaped & wild stepchild of Inland See is a half-hour highlight of the rest of your life to be: "Isle Peaks"

THE TRANSIT RIDER FAUN FABLES

DC314 2xLP

Street Date: August 28th, 2026

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE/ UK/AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND TRANSPORT THE TRANSIT RIDER TO ALL OTHER TERRITORIES

Arriving right on time for its 20th anniversary, Faun Fables’ musical theater work The Transit Rider returns in a lovely 2xLP vinyl edition that dimensionally burnishes the bristling performances and elevated chamber/cabaret folk sounds of the original CD-only release. At once a work of theatre, allegory and autobiography, The Transit Rider amplifies Faun Fables’ distinctive electroacoustic wash of Anglo-European folk sounds, shimmering allusively from traditional to Kurt Weill to folk-rock and back again.

Faun Fables on Drag City:

Track List: Birth Transit Theme House Carpenter In Speed Taki Pejaz Roadkill Earth's Kiss Fire & Castration The Questioning I No Longer Wish To The Corwith Brothers Dream On A Train I'd Like To Be

The route that led to The Transit Rider goes back even further than 2006; it was first embarked upon in the early ‘90s, when Dawn McCarthy moved to NYC and was introduced to the transient and constant glories of its subway system, a massive world unto itself. As she rode the trains, the subterranean, singing landscape suggested a journey in song: a rider aboard a ubiquitous transit system, a network of rails, roads, corridors and trails extending in all directions, meeting itself again on the far side of the world. Upon this endless circuitous path, she encounters characters that may or may not help her search to find a clearing amid this mass of machinery and humanity in which to stop and have a picnic.

In 2001, The Transit Rider took the form of a full-length theater production in San Francisco, with a cast of thirteen aided by the inspiring work of director/lighting designer Allen Willner. Its music was further developed/recorded/adapted into a touring show by Dawn and her stalwart co-conspirator Nils Frykdahl (of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), joined by multi-instrumentalists Jenya Chernoff and Matt Lebofsky. The album features contributions by Dawn’s mother Michelina Tyrie (“Earth’s Kiss” ) and father Will McCarthy (“I No Longer Wish To,” a poem written during his last days as a stock broker), with thematically related songs by Zygmunt Konieczny (“Taki Pejzaz / Such a Landscape” ) Soeur Sourire (“Je Voudrais / I’d like to Be” ), and the Anglo Saxon traditional “House Carpenter" added to the mix.

For the LP release, the artwork has been revamped, featuring previously unseen photos of the original stage show and the touring cast that followed. As with all Faun Fables music, the sweep of history and the voices of the people thrillingly coincide in the songs and singing of The Transit Rider. The project’s conceptual/theatrical properties give it a special pride of place in Faun Fables lore. Taped footage of the live show was stored away long before the YouTube & socials sharing boom. Fortunately, all capricious mists of time have parted just in time for The Transit Rider ’s 20th anniversary celebration: original performance footage from the theater show will be released, and Faun Fables will revisit songs from the album throughout their Summer 2026 tour.

The Transit Rider album combines Faun Fables’ distinctive songtelling style with their full-hearted/throated thespian energies, rumbling trippily past flashing lights and strangers in thirteen exquisite folk-cabaret urban anthems, a pungent masterpiece of 21st century folk rock.

“Lucius’ infectious melodies, keen selfawareness and shameless authenticity sweep through all 11 songs, making Wildewoman one of the most complete indie pop LPs this year” –PASTE

BIO

The follow-up to 2024's celebrated debut All For Something, Keepers arrives after two transformative years for the band. Since releasing their first album, Tiny Habits have toured internationally, performing alongside artists including James Taylor, Sarah McLachlan, Gracie Abrams, Vance Joy, and Noah Kahan. The result is a record that captures the uncertainty, excitement, heartbreak, and self-discovery that come with growing into yourself. Across twelve songs, Keepers explores the people, memories, relationships, and versions of ourselves we choose to carry forward, and the ones we ultimately leave behind.

• 20TH ANNIVERSARY VINYL REMASTER

• INCLUDES REPLICA OF THE ORIGINAL DEMO CD

• PRINTED INNER SLEEVE W/ LYRICS

• LIMITED EDITION BLOOD ORANGE VINYL

In 2026, Horse Feathers’ debut album, Words Are Dead, celebrates its 20th anniversary. We are so excited to celebrate this by releasing a deluxe reissue that will be completely remastered and pressed on an exclusive vinyl color. It will also include a replica of their original six-song demo CD in the package, along with a deluxe foil-stamped LP jacket.

In the years following Words Are Dead, Horse Feathers quietly built a body of work defined by patience and evolution rather than reinvention. Records like House With No Home, Thistled Spring, and Cynic’s New Year expanded their sonic palette without abandoning the restraint that first set them apart. By the time of Appreciation, the band had begun to open its sound outward, introducing richer arrangements and a subtle warmth that suggested growth without rupture. Through it all, Ringle remained a steady center, writing songs that favored emotional precision over spectacle.

LP-KRS-848C

The reissue of Words Are Dead does not attempt to rewrite that history. Instead, it brings the origin point back into focus, offering a rare chance to hear where it all began while recognizing how far the project has traveled since.

Revisiting the album now, with two decades of distance, reveals not just a beginning but a foundation. The same careful interplay, the same attention to space and tone, still anchors the band’s work today. In that sense, the reissue feels less like a retrospective and more like a continuation. A reminder that some records do not age so much as they wait for the right moment to be heard again.

Getting their start as the 1980s bled into the 90s, Velocity Girl arose from a new pop underground that had been percolating in Washington, DC and its suburbs, a group of bands clustered around our then-nascent Slumberland Records who broadened DC's punk paradigm with an ear for pop tunes and feedback-driven racket. Velocity Girl, blessed with multiple gifted songwriters, particularly knew how to merge euphoric pop hooks with waves of noisy bliss and lovelorn melancholy.

This new compilation 1989-1992 covers the band's pre-Sub Pop years and shows that their skill with a tune was there from the beginning, across several line-up changes and numerous early releases. The all-time classic "Forgotten Favorite" is included, as is their debut single "I Don't Care If You Go," featuring original vocalist Bridget Cross (later of Unrest). There are also crucial split single and compilation contributions, a few choice covers (Beat Happening, The Jam) and even a pair of unreleased tunes.

Newly remastered and featuring extensive liner notes by DC scene scholar John R. Davis, 1989-1992 is the comprehensive view of their early years that Velocity Girl has long deserved and their fans have long wanted.

Introducing Foglights — a new musical venture formed by Eva Cord (The Cords) & Stone Anthem. The project channels restless energy into washed-out guitars, hypnotic melodies, and lyricism that cuts straight through the noise. Combining elements of both of their music, the psychedelia and denseness of Stone Anthem and the twee, heartfelt indie pop of The Cords . The duo reflect their relationship within the music, being two differing artists with the same vision: to create from the heart with honesty and vulnerability.

Foglights blur the line between clarity and distortion, fragments of melody, tension-filled, hopeful folk-like pop soundscapes, and vocals that feel halfconfession, half-transmission. Their sound of their debut EP Nous Deux is controlled but unpredictable, pulling listeners into something dark but equally blissful and immersive, difficult to pin down. Shining the lights through the darkness.

Jeff Parker

The New Breed (IA11 Edition CD w/

bonus tracks)

Jeff Parker’s 2016 album The New Breed was a turning point for both Parker and International Anthem, changing the trajectory of his solo career as well as drawing an abundance of attention to our fresh imprint despite our then very limited catalog. Most importantly though, the album is the first to give voice to Parker’s wholly unique take on sample-based beat construction augmented by improvisation and live instrumentation (performed in this case by the high-level crew of Paul Bryan on bass, Josh Johnson on alto saxophone and keys, Jamire Williams and Jay Bellerose on drums, Parker's daughter Ruby on vocals, and Parker himself on guitar, synths, and other instruments).

What began as Jeff’s interest in understanding his own idea of hip-hop processes (and how they related to his work in jazz) expanded into a blueprint for much of his work since then. (Hear also:The New Breed’s expansive followup Suite For Max Brown, the gentle deconstructionist solo guitar of Forfolks, and the long-form slow bloom improvisation of TheWay Out of Easy.)

The IA11 Edition CD features two previously digital-only bonus tracks, plus a new insert booklet with unpublished session photos, new liner notes by album co-producer Paul Bryan, and an in-depth conversation between Jeff Parker and IARC co-founder Scott McNiece.

The Will of Tongues is the new studio album by Sarah Davachi, and it is certainly her most ambitious to date, spanning over two hours, available as a triple vinyl set, or double compact disc in hardback book style packaging. The album features five new works for historical pipe organs, three choral pieces, a suite of "interludes" for various microtonal ensembles, and a longform chamber piece for strings, organ, and tape. In addition to Davachi performing on organ, the album also features an incredible group of musicians from across the US and Europe, including Whitney Johnson (viola), Eyvind Kang (viola), Lucy Railton (cello), Diapason (an experimental brass ensemble from Los Angeles), Phaedrus (a Renaissance flute consort from Switzerland), and Chamber Choir Ireland

The album engages several different compositional methods and concepts, all rooted in the minimalist tradition from which Davachi primarily operates, but underscoring The Will of Tongues as a combined body of work is a deep reverence for the act of listening. This collection of music is not easy listening, and it's not meant to be – when long durations and a reduction of materials are at play, the ear and mind are forced to confront sound itself and the significant mental spaces that it continually gives rise to. The Will of Tongues is thus a celebration of iterative listening and of extreme confrontation, of intimate aural experience and its vast psychic horizons.

THRILL JOCKEY

The Chicago trio of Black Duck is a natural fit for collaboration with acclaimed Basque musician Elena Setién. Black Duck’s bassist/guitarist Douglas McCombs, guitarist Bill MacKay and drummer Charles Rumback have been lauded for their adaptability as live performers and collaborators for decades, performing in countless ensembles from Tortoise to Brokeback to collaborations with Ryley Walker, Bill Callahan, James Singleton and many more. Setién honed her improvisational skills in duo Little Red Suitcase before going on to collaborate with the likes of Steve Gunn, Mary Lattimore, and Glenn Kotche (Wilco) to name a few. Black Duck and Elena Setién’s combined preternatural ability to converse at the boundaries of improvisation and composition makes for fertile ground in which every subtle gesture carries weight. On their debut, self-titled collaborative release, Black Duck and Elena Setién alchemize the ease of their live chemistry and their wealth of experience into a refined menagerie.

The quartet first played together in early 2025 having only just met, trading off sitting in on each other’s sets on a run of shows throughout Spain. Recorded just a few months later in Chicago at Palisade with Nick Broste after only a few hours of rehearsal time, the record embraces the spontaneity of those performances. The freewheeling compositions take on added layers of depth with skilfully layered overdubs. The album perfectly balances the openness and core electric energy shared between each musician in the room and sumptuous, detailed arrangements.

Together, Black Duck and Elena Setién sounds like a singular unit and four powerhouses all at once. Their collective compositional acumen makes for an exquisite diversity of sounds and movements that all cohere into a singular album only they could make. Black Duck and Elena Setién is a gem of collective work, the sound of a quartet of masters of their craft moving in tandem.

THRILL JOCKEY

Stargazing Brooklyn noise-rock cosmonauts Upper Wilds — the powertrio led by Parts & Labor co-founder Dan Friel — return with another set of lean anthems filtered through a flamethrower. Their speediest, most explosive album yet, Mercury, is a meditation on death, with Friel expounding on his brush with skin cancer, climate change, funerals, Henry Kissinger, and a world seemingly on fire. Buoyed by recent tours with acts like Pelican, Uniform, Psychic Graveyard and Savak, the trio’s increased speed is met with a precision that gives every hairpin turn more wallop.

Mercury’s molten, non-stop riffing is captured with grit and punch by engineer Travis Harrison (Guided By Voices, The Men) and is bolstered by longtime collaborator/saxophonist and fellow-New York mainstay Jeff Tobias (Sunwatchers) and vocalist Erin Dawson of LA-based experimental black metal band Genital Shame. Jason Binnick’s basslines shine brighter than before dancing in tandem with Friel’s guitar licks on “Death Song #3” and bringing equal parts melody and thunderous weight to “GreenWood Cemetery.” Jeff Ottenbacher’s drumming oscillates between machine gun fills and sledge hammer pounding, giving each riff more momentum and bite.

Upper Wilds’ space-rock adventures through their recent albums Mars, Venus, & Jupiter came replete with stories of the heavens and humanity alike. On this fourth installment, the closest planet to the sun, things take a darker turn. The small, barren planet Mercury was named after the gods’ speedy messenger and guide to the underworld, and the album syphons Upper Wilds’ fuzz-pop aesthetics into concise, scorched anthems about the brevity and fragility of life with the ferocity of a band playing on the edge of extinction.

LA PRIEST INTO THE SKY

OVERVIEW

“I’m not sure which way I’m going, but it’s exciting – that’s the spirit of this album,” says Sam Eastgate of his latest LA Priest record, Into The Sky. And Into The Sky does feel genuinely exciting, not least because it finds Eastgate trying a new approach and in the process making some of the most satisfying music of his career. By composing these ten tracks on his custom-built Polygene synth and Gene 616 drum machine, he uses a distinctive sound palette to intuitively fashion a set of laser-guided pop songs on which he sings of love and liberation, swathed in pulsing electronics.

“For a long time, I wanted to make stuff for your mind. This one is more for the mind and the body,” he says. “I made this record to dance to. I haven’t really done one that you could put on and dance all the way through before.” To that end, he worked closely with his friend Alex Ridha – Boys Noize – who produced the album with Eastgate and also mixed it. The pair have known each other since his Late of the Pier days in the late 2000s, “back when we were all pretty much teenagers. The reason I thought of Alex is because he’s doing such an innovative job in electronic music and I’m revisiting a style I haven’t done for a long time.” Enhanced by Ridha’s dynamic production, Into The Sky possesses a verve and immediacy that seems to illuminate LA Priest’s trippier instincts.

On her 2 album, Don’t Be Funny Without Me (DBFWM), Le Ren is funny while devastating, self-aware and a little self-deceiving. Across the record, she holds those contradictions close: shameless and ashamed, honest but still searching for a version of the truth that hurts a little less DBFWM is an album about love, jealousy, and the uneasy ways the two often intertwine

After touring the world opening for artists like Jeff Tweedy, Devendra Banhart and Men I Trust, Le Ren returns with a distinctly Canadian album with lyrics imbued with that northern endurance. DBFWM presents a fuller sound - fiddles, drums, layers of harmony. More expansive, more experienced, and more earnest, it represents the artist’s claim to the fuller, wisened life she has earned

Aching and intoxicating, DBFWM is a post-breakup road trip with your best friend: no fixed destination, a trunk full of baggage (literal and figurative) and mottled sunlight warming your face through the car window.

 COMPACT DISC - LIMTED TO 150

Spoils Mile Wide Inch Deep CD-BW-036 CD $15.99

Born in a riverbed in Cincinnati, Spoils emerged as a Covid-19 era project between roommates and friends. Announcing their arrival in 2022 with Find Later, their first EP written by songwriter, guitarist, and violinist Nina Payiatis, the band has changed shape over the years while remaining true to their Midwestern roots. Channeling predecessors like that dog., Dear Norah, and The Spinanes, Spoils paints with a well-loved palette composed of the signs and sounds of Cincinnati, nestled somewhere between the South and the Midwest. Their second EP, Nothing For A Man (Happy Families, 2023) found Spoils in a more fully-realized formation; no longer just a way to pass time during the pandemic, their songwriting and arrangments took on a more reflexive, mature sound.

The depth of their bond rises to the surface of Spoils’ compositions. Lyricism meditates on universal rites of passage: chance encounters, adolescent reconciliation, questions of loss and of love. Mile Wide Inch Deep expands upon these subjects with a socratic ignorance: an acceptence of knowing that you know nothing. Payiatis’ writing speculates on ideas of motherhood, connections to the ecology, time and space, and the push-pull of intimate relationships. It’s an answer to life spent in the city Mark Twain apocryphally described as stuck 20 years in the past, and the countless hours spent imagining years into the future. Spoils is woven into the lush of the Little Miami river, the waning light of a winter moon, the quilted tapestry of Ohio.

CADAVER EYES ROAD EXTENDS

Cadaver Eyes is the duo project of drummer/vocalist David Opp (BARBARA, Carnation Dingthang, Heart & Crossbone Records) and no-input mixer virtuoso Eran “Zax” Sachs (Dumitrescu’s Hyperion Ensemble, Asher.Zax).

Initially launched as a psychotic one-man grindcore project by Opp in New York at the turn of the millennium, Cadaver Eyes gradually mutated into a slow, crushing duo, merging drums and no-input mixer into a sound that is heavy, raw, and utterly twisted. Brian Turner of WFMU described the project as “conjuring equal parts Voivod, Residents, Swans, Butthole Surfers, Carcass, and Khanate into a blurred mix of noise-blast insanity and creeping doom.”

Over the past two decades, the duo have explored experimental terrains inspired by John Cage and Gordon Mumma, using unstable electronic systems to rupture and reconfigure the rigid structures of extreme metal

and hardcore punk. Their performances revolve around instruments designed to behave unpredictably, allowing each composition to manifest differently every time it is performed.

ROAD EXTENDS marks the duo’s fifth full-length album and their first solo release in a decade following Class Mammal (2014). Developed over several years, the album attempts to translate the overwhelming intensity of their live performances into recorded form.

Initially centered around themes of pain, information overload, and the dehumanizing pressures of accelerated capitalism, the work gradually absorbed a more personal dimension—reflecting on life, trauma, crisis, and endurance itself. Heavy, punishing, and emotionally exposed, ROAD EXTENDS stands

KASHAIOF

DAYS

Kashaiof is the project of interdisciplinary artists Eyal Lally Bitton and Itzik Gil Avizohar, known for their boundary-pushing approach to electroacoustic composition. Drawing from early musique concrète and elektronische musik, the duo merge detailed sound design, lucid melodies, sacred harmonics, and fractured song structures into deeply immersive sonic experiences.

Their work has been described by The Wire as “exploring liminal spaces and interstices, as if diving right into the fabric of materials,” while Flux Webzine praised its “complex and multifaceted personal music formula,” and Black Metal Brews characterized it as “sometimes sparse, sometimes suffocating, always gripping.”

Building on the reputation of their previous releases, Home (Chondritic Sound, 2020) and MA (Under My Feet, 2022), Days delves deeper into the duo’s innovative

approach, integrating modular synthesis, ultrasonic feedback, field recordings, and acoustic instrumentation into dense and emotionally charged sonic environments. Weaving together repetitive postindustrial rhythms, folk chants, quaking synthesis, and enigmatic sound objects, the album unfolds gradually through processes of tension and crystallization.

Emerging from a place of vulnerability and longing, Days meditates on the transformative and unstable nature of sound itself—its capacity to alter perception, shape emotional realities, and reverberate unpredictably through the world.

The album received critical acclaim from publications such as The Quietus, who wrote that “the time spent with it feels immensely rewarding, like a front row seat for the creation of something strange and new, something special,” while PopMatters described the duo’s work as “a spectral amalgamation of styles,” where the compositions emerge as “fragile, like ephemeral electroacoustic sculptures.”

ALBUM: WHERE THE FADES MEET

STREET DATE: 24 July 2026

LABEL: Memphis Industries

More than two decades into the ever-evolving world of Blue States, Andy Dragazis returns with new album, “Where The Fades Meet”. Dragazis expands his signature cinematic sounds, placing a six-piece choir at the heart of the record. Continuing with the motif of big, atmospheric, widescreen production, but this time built around the concept of a small choir singing lead vocals in unison, the album transforms intimate songwriting into something communal and immersive.

The album marks another step in the evolution of Blue States, which has morphed over the years from a one-man project, to a live band, and now back to a studio-based solo project. Most of the album was recorded in Dragazis’ London based studio, with the choir and strings tracked separately. “Recording an album with a choir and a string quartet felt like a way of pushing myself both musically and technically – taking me out of my comfort zone” says Dragazis of the record. The choir came together after Dragazis reconnected with Tahita Bulmer (New Young Pony Club) who had collaborated with him on second Blue States album Man Mountain. Bulmer introduced him to vocalist Stacey Dowdeswell. Dowdeswell then helped assemble the six-piece vocal ensemble for the sessions, whose performances were largely recorded live in one take, capturing a raw, unpolished immediacy which adds to the human fragility and sense of presence at the core of the album. Bulmer herself joined the choir, marking a full-circle return to their earlier collaboration on “Man Mountain” more than twenty years ago. Even within the collective, her distinctive voice occasionally rises above the others and briefly takes centre stage. Also featured throughout the album is the acclaimed string quartet The Elysian Quartet

Where The Fades Meet stands out as one of Blue States’ most expansive and immersive works to date, balancing intricate orchestration with emotional intimacy and blurring the boundary between the personal and the universal.

KEY MARKETS: AUSTIN, PORTLAND OR, CHICAGO, DENVER NORTHERN CALIFORNIA (HOME MARKET)

Amid the excitement and ambiguity of a new start, Paige Anderson of Two Runner poses poignant questions on PORCHLIGHT, her resolute and tenderhearted new record. Beautiful string arrangements, intimate confessionals, and rollicking hymns for the lost and determined, here is an artist who’s been on the road consistently since early childhood - with persistence and commitment to her craft clearly in no short supply.

Porchlight offers tunes that are warm and steady, relatable nostalgia twinged with the ache of needing to move on. The result aptly links the uncertainty of letting go and simultaneous resolve of someone faced with no other choice. A destiny perhaps sealed from an early age, as Anderson began her touring career in a six-person family bluegrass band from the age of nine. Now nearly a decade into her own music career, she’s seen stages warming up for Sierra Ferrell, Watchhouse and Molly Tuttle.

Although change often comes en masse, it is surreal and jarring to start again. Paige Anderson offers Two Runner as solace and escape for those needing to reset, with sage comfort and kindness from her own accounts, the way all great songwriters do. Porchlight is perhaps best summed up by the chorus in track five, ‘Mocking Crow’: “Wake up tomorrow, there’s no in between - your heart knows what you need.” A reckoning, a stark look in the mirror, hope, and for-

On the third installment of their ‘Songs for Sad Poets’ project, Iranian composer Siavash Amini and American author Eugene Thacker present us with lyrics sung by voices, but which are unrecognizable as words – and unintelligible even as voices. Song and sound implode and become indistinguishable from each other, creating something that reverberates with the tradition of “cursed poets” (poètes maudits) that is the inspiration for the project as a whole.

Writing for chorus, Thacker’s compressed poetry allows words to undergo sonic transformations. Similarly, Amini draws on a wide range of techniques (including the use of voice synthesis software), to transform Thacker’s minimalist poetry into spectral and haunting soundscapes. The result are at once diffuse and unsettling, lyrical and abstract.

Empirical Like Lambs: To The Slaughter

08/28/2026

Empirical return with their second release on Whirlwind Recordings with a warning for our troubled times: their forebodingly titled eighth album, Like Lambs: To The Slaughter. Following vibraphonist and long-standing member Lewis Wright's move to the USA, the awardwinning UK jazz ensemble, featuring Nathaniel Facey on alto saxophone, Tom Farmer on double bass and Shaney Forbes on drums, have embraced a more flexible lineup. The trio enlist highcaliber guest artists to expand their sound, with long-time collaborators Ivo Neame on piano and David Preston on guitar lending their distinctive musical voices to the album.

A radical reworking of drummer Shaney Forbes' unconventional long-form suite, first issued as a self-released EP, the album unfolds as an uninterrupted 51-minute musical story. It draws the listener intoanirresistiblemaelstromofchangingemotionalstates, reaching its unsettling fever-pitch peak in the title segment of the suite. With this album Empirical have created an astounding and formally cohesive new articulation of their unique sonic world, made possible by their exceptional virtuosity and musical empathy and their daring emotional expressiveness. A standout release even by Empirical's high standards.

The album traverses the musical terrain between contemporary classical music, soundscape, post-bop and free jazz.

Jane Weaver – Like An Aspen Leaf

Originally released in 2002, Like An Aspen Leaf is a breathtaking smoky folk opus spiked with Americana longing. Nuanced with the help of members of Elbow, Voice Of The Seven Woods and Andy Votel, it emanates from a baroque pop netherworld, soundtracked by songs of regret, pinpricked by evocative melodies and sumptuous harmonies, and peppered with plaintive swathes of cello and a suitably meandering piano that lurks behind Jane’s minor chords. Now remastered for the modern age, Like An Aspen Leaf is a bewitching seven-song set filled with aching melancholy.

“These are urban poems, reflecting frailties in urban landscapes and finding great passions hiding between the lines of everyday conversation” The Guardian ★★★★

Jane Weaver – Seven Day Smile

Following with Jane’s first full-length album in 2006, Seven Day Smile is a tongue-in-cheek collection of modern kitchen sink dramas; a wide-ranging set of floating dreampop episodes focusing on bittersweet bedsit tales, beautifully balanced between distant Americana and breathy new folk. Created by Jane featuring collaborations with Doves and Andy Votel, it’s a downtempo mirror of the northern post-Britpop era, with impetuous rhythms and super-real commentary. Seven Day Smile is a mix of the unreleased Supersister album sessions and her own home recordings that remains an intensely personal collection of songs.

An intimate journey of ethereal folk sweetness, elevated by gorgeous production, aching pedal steel, violins and, in parts, a mutated take on VU-styled rock.

J. Zunz –Obsidiana

Rocket Recordings

LAUNCH429 LP 2026-08-28 5056688847425

Obsidian rock is igneous, frequently dark, yet opaque. Hard edged and brittle, it’s often been used both for weaponry and alchemical pursuits. Therefore when Lorena Quintanilla – the Mexican-based artist from the group ‘Lorelle Meets The Obsolete’ and also known as J. Zunz – was searching for psychic inspiration for her next musical venture, she need have looked no further. “Once I chose the title, everything I read, saw, listened to, and thought about began to interconnect” she relates. “Obsidian became like a magnetic field.”

“In Mesoamerican cultures, it was used in many different ways – obsidian mirrors, for example, were tools for divination and spiritual vision". Thereafter, Lorena set about creating an album entirely on her own terms. Driven by both the ghost and the heart of the machine, ‘Obsidiana’ open up a portal whereby forbidding drone, ethereal ambience and insistent repetition intertwine elegantly to form a seamless whole.

A study in balance, its emotional charge remains strong and intact whether on the eerie, almost Radiophonic ambience of ‘Imago’ or the dancefloor-adjacent, Chris & Cosey-esque ‘Osiris’. Lyrically meanwhile, ‘Obsidiana’ intersects deep personal explorations with the conflicts and contradictions of life in the unforgiving realm of 2026 – as Lorena says; “he process behind ‘Obsidiana’ was very abstract, yet I wanted the lyrics to stay grounded in the present and in reality".

Ultimately however, ‘Obsidiana’, in all its sharp yet amorphous glory, is catharsis manifest. “Each song carries a clear and deliberate intention” Lorena emphasises. “To conjure, to exorcise, to strip away fear, to rediscover myself, to heal inherited sadness, and to reclaim the night that was taken from us.”

Fully Nowhere: A World Resources Archive

World Of Echo

World Of Echo is proud to announce Fully Nowhere: a World Resources Archive, compiling material drawn from limited lathe 7” singles and LPs released by the Aotearoa/New Zealand label, World Resources, predominantly across the 1990s. Supplemented by previously unreleased archival recordings, and material drawn from recent sessions, it’s a revelatory listen, a judicious selection of drone, noise pop, fractured electronics and laminal improvisation from the small community of musicians surrounding the legendary Wellington free noise trio, Surface of the Earth, whose membership drove World Resources.

It’s music that hasn’t found its way into too many ears until now. The World Resources catalogue was both small in its number of releases, and miniscule in edition. The lathe-cuts they released, all made in a record cutting studio in the small Southern Alps town of Geraldine by DIY vinyl manufacturer Peter King, typically didn’t make their way beyond a tiny clutch of devoted collectors – if that. It took the re-release of Surface of the Earth’s 1995 double LP, firstly on CD by Bruce Russell’s Corpus Hermeticum, then again on Utech and finally on vinyl by Black Editions, to draw attention to the body of music made by the World Resources crew.

Listening over and over again to this music, in quiet thrall to its renegade spirit, its documentation of the visions of a tight-knit crew of unassuming artists from Wellington, I keep wondering: How did they do this, and how did they know to do it both so neatly, and yet so organically? Fully Nowhere, now here, is a radiance of tone, a blossom of sound, a haze of days.

Inferno retains their signature melodies and atmospheres, drawing on the esoteric influences explored in Societas X Tape (their 2019 NTS mix for Warp Records’ 30th anniversary) and the darker ambience introduced on Tomorrow’s Harvest , further deepened by an expanded role for speech soundbites.

There is a long list of early ‘90s albums that were unjustly ignored in the wake of the era’s grunge explosion. A lot of them were metal releases, but when it comes to alternative rock records, Dada’s 1992 record Puzzle would be right at the top. Psychedelia and sunny SoCal sounds undercut by healthy skepticism (“Dizz Knee Land”) regarding the region’s charms render Puzzle worthy of its title, an impression reinforced by the enigmatic, Rorschach-like cover art. Power pop and even some funk add to the allure of this noir-ish album, which is as hard to classify as it is to resist. (REMASTERED 25TH ANNIVERSARY RED SMOKE VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 4, 2026

The title of 2001’s In Torment in Hell may well have been referring to Deicide’s collective state of mind as well as offering another example of their usual dark metaphysical/ religious musings. The band was at each other’s throats and at war with their label (this was their last album for Roadrunner), which has led to less-than-kind reviews from fans and even the band itself. But now, given the benefit of time, its even-more-breakneck-thanusual tempos and tunes like “Child of God” and the title track add up to another head-spinning death metal anti-exorcism. For its 25th anniversary, we’ve had In Torment in Hell remastered for vinyl and pressed it in appropriately infernal red smoke wax. First stand-alone release on LP, complete with insert!

Blessed with a formidable front woman in Brett Anderson, a guitar heroine in Allison Robertson, and a pummeling rhythm section in bassist Maya Ford and drummer Torry Castellano, The Donnas were one of the greatest punk bands of the ‘90s, male or female, bringing a uniquely hedonistic yet feminist viewpoint to the genre. And here is where it all started; recorded when they were still in high school, The Donnas’ 1997 debut was and will forever be one of the most infectious, sing-along slabs of punk ever waxed. Owing no small debt to the Ramones (all the way down to their sharing of “anonymous” names), the girls gleefully turn the sex, drugs, and rock and roll dials up to 11, except this time it’s the females that are looking for some action (“I wanna huff all night” and “I’m gonna get in his pants tonight” are two representative lyrical lines). And for our Real Gone reissue of this classic, you are getting The Donnas raw and unfiltered…that’s right, we actually scored the original quarter-inch 2-track master tape to the album, so you’re getting an all-analog version of this punk-rock masterpiece. DOROTHY ASHBY AND FRANK WESS: IN A MINOR GROOVE

(Clear with Red, Green & Purple Swirl Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 4, 2026

Dorothy Ashby was probably the greatest—and certainly the most swinging—jazz harpist of all time, re-purposing an instrument best known for ethereal glissandos into a fully versatile voice in combo settings, capable of providing both instrumental embroidery and rhythmic drive. But both her gender and the exoticism of her instrument often prevented her from being taken seriously among the hidebound environs of late ‘50s and ‘60s jazz. It is that very uniqueness of her sound and station in the jazz world, though, that has made her one of the most collectible musicians of her era, as her music has been sampled and celebrated by modern-day hip hop and world music artists (e.g. Jurassic Five, Bonobo) alike. In a Minor Groove is one of two albums she made in 1958 with flautist/saxophonist Frank Wess, and it is a marvel; backed by fellow Detroit native Herman Wright on bass and the great Roy Haynes on drums, she and Wess weave mesmerizing melodic threads through standards like “Alone Together” and “Yesterdays.” But perhaps the most amazing track is “Bohemia After Dark,” which displays Ashby’s uncanny ability to turn her harp into a rhythm guitar! For this reissue, we are using the original mono sources—not the rechanneled stereo and jumbled track listing that showed up on Prestige’s later repackaging called Dorothy Ashby Plays for Beautiful People. Original album art with Ira Gitler’s sleeve notes, too, pressed in clear with red, green, and purple swirl vinyl to match the sonic palette of this classic!

Description

Sofie Royer, "one of Europe’s most intriguing underrated pop stars, with a captivating voice and an offbeat aristocratic glamour" (The Guardian), is back with a new album.

Having released three acclaimed LPs, the Viennese musician’s songwriting and production have become more complex and polished, her lyrics sharper and funnier. before/after is her most incisive record to date, confronting the gripes of being an artist and weaving selfexcavation with cultural commentary. Sofie may have gone from lo-fi producer to a bona fide pop musician who’s opened for Lana Del Rey, Air and LCD Soundsystem, but she still doesn’t know where she fits in. She pulls no punches when critiquing the music industry – “I’m too pop for the art world, too indie darling for the mainstream” – but saves her biggest swings for herself.

Over 12 catchy pop songs, Royer wonders if conflicts between past and future aren’t just battles with our own selves. “We are constantly in a battle with the ‘pre’ and ‘post’ states of time,” she explains. “There is a preoccupation with these two tenses; yet by remaining entangled in these states, we are often our own greatest obstacle to overcome. Really, in the state of before/after, it’s always you vs you.”

Dottie Andersson

: September 4th, 2026

With her debut album, Andersson Funeral Home, Dottie Andersson, a Swedish songwriter from Småland, fully steps into a world of her own making - one where grief, memory and healing are treated equally

For Andersson, the funeral home becomes a metaphor for emotional processing and closure - the place where feelings are handled with care rather than suppressed “When someone suddenly leaves your life, it’s unnatural to just erase them, pretend they were never there” she explains “They stay in your heart for a while The heart becomes a kind of funeral home Eventually, when time finally allows, the feeling is buried - not bitterly, but gratefully Only in this way, there is a possibility to move on.”

Andersson Funeral Home was written, produced, recorded and mixed by Andersson and British producer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Jackson-Cook. The duo have an instinct for contrast: sharp melodic sensibility collides with raw textures and atypical production choices across 13 tracks of sensitive but exciting indie-pop. Andersson’s background as a drummer is clear through the arrangements and drum sounds themselves.

Andersson Funeral Home is not a debut album searching for identity It’s the arrival of one fully formed, brimming with confidence

Enneads is a New York-based trio featuring pianist Phyllis Chen, drummer Hamir Atwal, and Zach Layton on the rare 17-string electric bass. Named after the writings of the neoplatonic philosopher Plotinus, the ensemble approaches improvisation through the ancient idea, first articulated by Pythagoras, that harmony is “number made audible.” The trio extracts hidden structures present within acoustic space—harmonic overtones, sympathetic vibrations, rhythmic proportion, and resonance emerging as living musical forms.

Layton’s 17-string bass, tuned in a variety of overtone-based systems, functions almost like an amplified Greek lyre, running through heavy fuzz, distortion, and ring modulation, while Chen explores the interior of an amplified piano, drawing rich constellations of expanded natural string harmonics. Around these resonant landscapes, Atwal’s drumming creates fluid cycles of pulse and motion that continually reshape the ensemble’s sense of temporal structure.

Recorded between 2024 and 2026 at Layton’s studio in New York’s Hudson Valley, the material on the Enneads’ debut self-titled record is a distillation of the trio’s approach towards improvisation. Throughout the album, harmonics drift into slowly beating patterns, while dreamy reverberant atmospheres evolve into dense layers of distorted harmonics, recalling the gravitational pull of doom metal within the context of experimental music and contemporary jazz. The first and last tracks on the album were slowed down after recording, exploring practices pioneered by Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, (and DJ Screw) revealing temporal and harmonic relationships within the musical landscape.

RICHARD LAVIOLETTE – A LITTLE LESS LIKE A ROCK, A LITTLE MORE LIKE HOME

CATALOG: YCA-006

FORMAT: LIMITED EDITION LP

RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 4, 2026

With the rapid acceleration of Huntington’s Disease symptoms compounded by complex long-term health issues, Richard chose to receive medical assistance in dying (MAID) on September 5, 2023. We miss him dearly.

Richard Laviolette (1982–2023) released his second record a little less like a rock, a little more like home on CD in 2006 on Burnt Oak Records, an artist-run co-operative and independent record label co-founded by Brad MacInerny, Ryan Newell and jiaqing wilson-yang, active between 2005 and 2007. Burnt Oak was based out of a rented house at 127 Grange Street in Guelph, Ontario, where the collective lived, rehearsed, hung out, and hosted all ages shows, also recording each others’ music, packing and mailing CD orders, and silk-screening and sewing the covers for the albums they released.

Combining folk, rock, and country influences, a little less like a rock, a little more like home is a beloved lo-fi classic of brilliant songwriting and powerful vocals, animated by Richard’s deeply held anti-capitalist, anti-colonial, DIY, and community-based ethos. It includes some of Richard’s most timeless songs and performances, including the unclassifiable magic of Qq, the shockingly intimate and utterly cosmic Ants vs. Universe, and the beautifully fingerpicked folk-song Oncoming Trains.

You’ve Changed Records is proud to present this first ever vinyl pressing. This Limited Edition LP features audio newly mastered for vinyl, recreated artwork by artist sophia bartholomew, and includes a full lyric insert.

Australian jangle pop legends Ups and Downs are back with a brand new EP – their first new music for over 10 years!

The Radio Is Dead EP opens with the title track which hooks you in with a killer chorus before tripping out in a psychedelic haze. Then it’s the shimmering groove of the single Out Of Thin Air, where the band conjure pure guitar pop with a summery melody and classic harmonies. This is Ups and Downs at their sparkling best!

Elsewhere, Earth’s Still Spinning is driving interstellar pop, Haunted House holds its secrets until its violin-led crescendo, and the life-affirming swirls of In My End Is My Beginning is a fitting tribute to Ups and Downs’ 40 years in the business of making great guitar pop.

Tune in to Radio Is Dead – it will put a smile on your dial!

Black Bananas – Bad Bunch

Jennifer Herrema’s Black Bananas return with Bad Bunch, the group’s first album since 2014’s Electric Brick Wall and Herrema’s first release since Royal Trux’s White Stuff (2019). Arriving via Fire Records, the album marks the long-awaited return of Herrema’s iconic vocals alongside longtime collaborators Brian McKinley and Kurt Midness.

From Royal Trux to RTX to Black Bananas, Jennifer Herrema’s work has never divided into separate phases so much as continued in motion. As Pitchfork observed, Black Bananas are an “alternate-universe RTX”, absorbing influences from synth-pop, hip-hop, French-touch house and dancehall into their own singular sound.

Originally formed over 20 years ago under the name RTX, Herrema, McKinley and Midness have evolved into a kinetically connected, freaky collective. Bad Bunch finds the trio delivering a spaced-out, jazzy-rock groove, shaped by improvisation and new recording methods developed over the last decade.

Beginning more than ten years ago, the album took shape across periods of disconnected time, interrupted by the Royal Trux reunion and the upheaval of the pandemic. The result is a record that pushes Black Bananas’ innovative tendencies even further while remaining unmistakably their own.

The Bevis Frond – Horrorful Heights + Horrorful Offal (Deluxe Edition)

This special deluxe edition combines Horrorful Heights with the bonus companion album Horrorful Offal, all packaged in a striking die-cut slipcase

Horrorful Heights marks a formidable new chapter in The Bevis Frond’s deep and storied catalogue, showcasing the enduring creativity of songwriter, guitarist and frontman Nick Saloman as he moves into yet another decade of recording. Long established as one of the most distinctive voices in British underground rock, Saloman continues to refine the band’s signature blend of melodic psychedelia, wiry guitar epics and sharp, emotionally attuned songwriting. Horrorful Heights offers one of the most approachable entry points to the band’s world in years: a record that gathers their core strengths into a cohesive, vivid set.

Recorded with long-time drummer Dave Pearce and guitarist Paul Simmons, alongside new bassist Louis Wiggett, the album moves fluidly between jangling psych-pop, heavy-lit guitar workouts and pastoral comedown reveries. Wiggett also brings a surprising new colour to the Frond palette, contributing pedal steel to “Best Laid Plans” and “Momma Bear,” recalling early-70s country-tinged British rock from Bronco or Cochise.

The album’s range is wide but sharply defined. “Draining The Bad Blood” channels the classic Bevis Frond mode of melodic guitar pop cut from the same cloth as longtime fan favourites later covered by Teenage Fanclub and The Lemonheads. “Space Age Eyes,” a concise nine-minute odyssey, nods toward the transcendental explorations of ’70s electric Miles Davis, complete with a blistering solo from Simmons and rhythmic elasticity from Pearce. The sitar-laden title track, written off-the-cuff while Saloman half-watched a football match, drifts through incense-hazed psychedelia with layered vocals and tumbling tablas an affectionate echo of the head-shop mysticism he has toyed with throughout the band’s history.

Alongside the core album, this deluxe edition includes Horrorful Offal, an eleven-track companion drawn from the same fertile sessions. Far from a grab-bag of leftovers, it extends the world of Horrorful Heights with alternate moods, deep-cut experiments and songs that illuminate the album’s edges. Together they form a panoramic view of the Frond’s current creative streak. Both albums are housed in a striking deluxe edition, presented in a bespoke die-cut slipcase that frames the artwork.

Grateful Dead’s first ever gig in UK and Europe 1970. John Peel in 1995 - “How many examples have there been in the longish history of English music festivals that define the festival in your head for ever? There have been a few, I DJ’d and compered at The Grateful Dead at Ted Askey’s pig farm, Staffordshire, this was a great example”.

56 years ago the Grateful Dead made their first trip across the pond to play at the Hollywood Festival. The two-day outdoor event was packed with a variety of local and national talent, which included the likes of Traffic, Ginger Baker’s Airforce, Mungo Jerry, The Flaming Groovies, Tony Joe White, a very young Black Sabbath, and Jose Feliciano. The Dead performed a fine electric set despite the tiny stage, crowded press arena, and a PA and monitoring system that they weren't able to hear. No problem, the boys played full tilt for three hours straight to the delight of the Newcastle-under-Lyme freaks and adventurous locals.

One reviewer said “It represents a band playing at the edge of new possibilities and ideas,”

The British press were unanimous in their positive appraisal of the Dead’s showing at the festival: Mac Garry (in Zigzag 13) said that they were "…totally magnificent.” His description of Jerry’s performance was compelling: “…the solid red Gibson looked so flimsy in Garcia’s hands that it looked like it would break like balsa if he squeezed it but it seemed like every time he touched it, beautiful, clear ringing notes poured out and on Me and My Uncle he was just fucking fabulous.” Dick Lawson (‘What would be the answer to the answer then?’ Friends 12) completely gushed over the show, describing their set as "The most ecstatic exploratory music ever witnessed in England."

LP CL001LP 2026-09-04 5063176116314

John Hassall (The Libertines) & The April Rainers release their long overdue second, self-titled album.

John Hassall: “It's a London based love story, but it's also about finding the wonder and poetry in everyday life. Having dreams and chasing them gives you hope."

The new album was largely recorded at John’s home studio in Aarhus, Denmark where he has been living since 2009. And was produced by the band, with string player Clementine Brown having a big influence on the sound.

"These 10 songs are the ones that survived, grew and took on a life of their own. There's no way of telling if a song will make it until the end. That Pale Lantern in my opinion, started off as a rank outsider and then turned into one of the strongest songs on the album. Lessons were learnt from Wheels to Idyll and a new musical development runs through it. Whereas the last album was recorded pretty much live. The new album maintains similar classic songwriting and pop sensibilities, though with more complex arrangements and production.”

Most of the songs were cowritten by John and longtime poet collaborator Steev Burgess exploring memories of school days, journeys and adventures, fading dreams, ancient empires and even somebody’s trinket collection. Burgess who has known Hassall for many years, wrote the lyrics to lead single Miracles, a sort of Ballad of John and Line. Libertines band mate Peter Doherty is also involved with a co-writing credit on Doing Time.

Shooting Daggers –The Real Life Thing

New Heavy Sounds

LP NHSLP058 2026-09-04 5055869551274

"Shooting Daggers are a band that never seems to stop. Sal, Bea and Raquel are one of the hardest working outfits out there, constantly playing shows and lending their support to myriad causes all around the U.K. and Europe. So, it’s always an exciting prospect when the band takes some time out from the maelstrom to write and record new material. And 2 years on from the release of their acclaimed debut album ‘Love & Rage’ the band have been in Bear Bites Horse Studio with Wayne Adams (Big Lad, Green Lung) at the controls to come up with the goods once again. ‘The Real Life Thing’ is the latest hardcore sonic missive from one of London’s must-see bands, and it absolutely does not disappoint. Shooting Daggers are the real deal; the best, and most exciting and adventurous hardcore-inspired band in the country.

A ‘mini album‘. 7 songs and 20 minutes of driving rocket fuelled punk meets melody picking up from their debut to go further into their own space. A selection of songs that are marked by a fierce energy, variety and cool musical nous, but always with a message firmly at its core. The band says …

‘It's a crucial time to focus on what really matters. Be present, be aware of real things happening in the world, with integrity and love we can make a difference as a community. There is hope out there, and if we all start treating nature, people and animals with respect and empathy we will be able to become better humans and coexist. In this mini album, we express the full range of our emotions through various sounds and genres. From cheerfulness to anger and hopefulness. From hardcore punk, to shoegaze, to post hardcore and riot grrrl.

Gnoomes –Losey

Confronting 2026, hope can seem in short supply, as the most divisive and toxic voices worldwide are amplified amidst an ever-rising temperature of conflict and alienation, yet hope is abundant in ‘Losey’, the latest release on Rocket Recordings from the mercurial duo Gnoomes. Just as this couple have taken a bold step into the unknown by leaving Russia and moving to Slovenia, so their music has thrown off all shackles to flourish in a defiant show of vibrant and revivifying colour. “The life of an immigrant is a strange thing.” says the bands Sasha Piankov “But luckily, that glow music brings us has never faded, even though the emotional landscape has definitely shifted.” Yet whilst the music that Sasha and his creative and life partner Masha Piankova came up with is testimony to a liberating triumph against oppression and adversity, it also goes beyond. What has emerged is a kaleidoscopic collision of styles which sends the ‘skygazing’ realm of their previous work spinning into electronic orbit. Whilst the opener ‘Foreign Agent’ explicitly tackles the pressures of the Russian state, it also throws a Stereolab-style motorik meditation through an in-the-red psychedelic prism. Elsewhere we can behold Bulgakov and Chris and Cosey as bedfellows amidst the mesmeric, 303-fried EBM of ‘Satan’s Ball’. “Rave as therapy. Pop as resistance. Love as endurance. ADHD as a production technique.” These are the primary ingredients of Losey, by the reckoning of the band themselves. This is an album that exists purely on its own distinct frequency, driven by defiance and positivity. Losey is a soundtrack to set fire to the old order, the better to dance in the glow.
