Redeye Label of the Month Q&A

Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight! This Issue: Earth Libraries (Bryant Saxon)

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

Bryant’s journey into the music industry began in Birmingham, Alabama, playing in local bands and immersing himself in the city’s vibrant DIY music scene. Along the way, he helped friends launch their label, Step Pepper Records, learning the ins and outs of independent music, physical releases, and artist development. Those experiences eventually inspired him to start Earth Libraries, a label built around the idea of discovering, preserving, and sharing extraordinary music, whether it’s a brand-new indie record or a forgotten gem from decades past.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

It’s a mix, and we love it that way. We want Earth Libraries to feel like an actual library, a place where listeners can wander between eras, genres, and scenes. If there’s a throughline, it’s music with heart and a strong sense of place. Our catalog leans toward indie rock, folk, Americana, and experimental sounds, but you’ll also find soul, country, gospel, jazz, and plenty of surprises.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?

We’ve joked for years about launching an archival imprint called Lost Tapes, inspired by Mad Anthony’s The Lost Tapes, which became one of our most beloved releases. It would focus entirely on forgotten recordings, unreleased albums, and overlooked artists who deserve a second chance to be heard.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

A crate digger. A curious listener. Someone who gets excited about finding a forgotten record from 1974 and an exciting new indie band in the same afternoon.

Where do you go to search for new music?

We’re huge fans of Aquarium Drunkard and New Commute. Both consistently champion adventurous music with thoughtful writing and genuine enthusiasm. Their playlists, radio programs, and editorial coverage have introduced us to countless artists over the years.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

One project we’re especially proud of is Butterfly In The Sky by The Octopus Project. Like many people, we grew up with Reading Rainbow, and the opportunity to help celebrate its legacy felt incredibly meaningful. The packaging was also our most ambitious to date, featuring a butterfly die-cut jacket, a pop-up butterfly inside the gatefold, and splatter vinyl inspired by a rainbow.

What is your stance on color vinyl?

We’re unapologetically pro-color vinyl. While we understand the audiophile arguments, we see vinyl as both a listening experience and a visual medium. Thoughtful variants can help tell the story of a release. That said, we don’t think every album needs forty different versions.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

The rising cost of vinyl is challenging for labels, artists, and fans alike. At the same time, we’re encouraged that people continue to value physical media. We’ve also been excited to see CDs experience a resurgence, especially among younger listeners looking for affordable ways to build music collections. We appreciate the format for its fidelity, and we like the expansion of the Super CD formats.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Discovery has become increasingly algorithm-driven. Editorial playlists, music publications, and independent curators still matter, but they no longer hold the same influence they once did. It can make it harder for independent artists to break through, but it’s also pushed labels like ours to become more creative. Encouragingly, we’re seeing renewed interest in curation, physical media, and community-driven music discovery.

How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?

Fun fact: streaming actually uses more energy than the entire vinyl industry!! But sustainability is important to us. We regularly utilize recycled vinyl options whenever possible and try to be thoughtful about manufacturing. More broadly, we believe physical media encourages a more intentional relationship with music. We also believe the industry should continue exploring ways to reduce waste (and excessive variants) while supporting artists and fans alike.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:

Seasick Records in Birmingham, Alabama, has championed Earth Libraries since the beginning. They’ve carried our releases, hosted events, and supported us through every stage of our growth. We’d also love to shout out Vinyl Tap in Nashville, another incredible shop that’s been a longtime supporter of the label.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?

Recently, we worked on an archival compilation featuring long-lost Alabama recordings and invited contemporary artists to cover some of the songs. One of those tracks was originally written by Tommy Stuart of the band Rubberband. Tommy had always dreamed of hearing another artist interpret his music, but it never happened during the band’s original run. Decades later, we were able to make that dream a reality.

That’s what we’d like Earth Libraries to be remembered for: connecting generations of musicians, preserving overlooked stories, and ensuring that great music, whether new or forgotten, continues to find its audience.

There’s an alternate reality where everyone makes a living wage and the cleanest buses you’ve ever seen arrive every other minute. Where the most intense songs are about confessing your love to a crush at the apple orchard, and where gentle feelings and chaotic energy are inseparable best friends. This is the timeline where Cootie Catcher is right at home. This Toronto based four-piece exudes both vulnerability and unbridled excitement, creating a sound that hypercharges the open-hearted tenderness of twee pop with spiraling synths and giddy electronics. “Something We All Got” is the clearest and most vibrant reading of Cootie Catcher’s vision yet, with songs of sweetness, nervousness, and expectancy that beam out unguarded.

MOJAVE 3

Long

awaited reissues of all of their albums, remastered at Abbey Road

Ask Me Tomorrow, Out Of Tune, Excuses For Travellers, Spoon and Rafter, Puzzles Like You

Mojave 3’s founding members are vocalist/guitarist Neil Halstead, bassist/vocalist Rachel Goswell, and drummer Ian McCutcheon. The band broke cover in 1995, when a six-track demo impressed 4AD sufficiently to offer them a deal, despite a then-prevailing musical climate of bumptious Britpop that seemed totally at odds with what Mojave 3 were doing. Their incongruence was hardly surprising given that Halstead, Goswell and McCutcheon had formed as members of definitive shoegazers Slowdive.

Mojave 3’s debut, Ask Me Tomorrow, was a refreshingly stripped down collection that changed little from the original demos. Halstead’s melodic, folk- and country-tinged songs drew favourable (if lazy) comparisons to Nick Drake, Cowboy Junkies and Bob Dylan. Three years later, Out Of Tune continued where the first album left off and showed a group that had grown in both confidence and cohesiveness. Third album Excuses For Travellers contained some of the most ambitious Halstead compositions yet. Spoon and Rafter followed three years later marking another shift for the band. While still containing echoes of singer-songwriters and alt-country, the record represents a technicolor expansion of their palette that utilizes electronics, glockenspiels, melodica, and Beatlesque production. Their final album, 2006’s Puzzles Like You is a positively bright and fun record that feels right at home next to indie rock contemporaries like The Shins and Band of Horses, while sounding nearly unrecognizable next to the band they were on Ask Me Tomorrow

Long out of print, these reissues have been remastered at Abbey Road and are the first 4AD pressings since original release.

“I guess you could call it a lost album,” says Rodney Crowell. “I stumbled upon it in my vault at home. I’d forgotten about it completely.” He’s referring to Then Again, which he recorded and shelved two decades ago before moving off into new directions. Since then, the album has been biding its time, waiting for the moment when its songs would hit hardest. And they hit incredibly hard now, largely because age and experience have granted Crowell a richer perspective. “I’m glad I put it on the shelf, because now is the time for it. It may not be the time for it for the rest of the world, but it’s time for it for me. That’s why I wanted to call it Then Again. I thought that was a clever way of saying that what was happening then is happening now.

Back in 2006, Crowell was in high cotton. He was coming off a trilogy of albums—The Houston Kid in 2001, Fate’s Right Hand in 2003, The Outsider in 2005—that re-established him as a fearless voice in Americana and attracted new generations of fans drawn to his compassionate storytelling, his detail-laden songwriting, and his eloquent outrage over political injustices. In 2005 he went into Treasure Isle Studios in Nashville to record what would become Then Again. But when he heard the masters, something didn’t feel quite right. The band was smokin’ hot and the songs sounded good, but the album just didn’t move him and he struggled to figure out exactly what was wrong or what was missing. Twenty years later, when he found the album in his vaults, he couldn’t remember exactly what tripped him up. He decided it was finally time, if only because “I heard a record I wasn’t sick of. I was no longer sick of myself. That’s what 20 years will do for you.”

Once lost and now found, Then Again is something the Rodney Crowell of the 2000s could never have predicted but something the Rodney Crowell of the 2020s recognizes instinctively: a work of nuance, insight, and sensitivity that considers death but celebrates life. “I’m trying to understand that this spirit of mine is going to leave this body and go off somewhere else. I’ve got a pretty good idea that it’s going to be someplace good, but I still need to perfect some part of my spiritual journey here before I check out. I can see that in these songs now.”

BLUES NOW GA-20 with Charlie Musselwhite

BLUES NOW! The title says it all. Blues in all caps – honest, emphatic, and raw. This collaborative album unites GA-20, one of today’s most celebrated young Blues trios, and Charlie Musselwhite, a legendary statesman of the genre. Musselwhite’s name is synonymous with the Blues, a harmonica virtuoso and esteemed vocalist with a 60plus year career forged in authenticity and excellence. GA-20 burst onto the scene in 2018, garnering a quick reputation for dynamic live performance, built on a deep respect for the originators and an enduring commitment to carrying the torch forward. Together with BLUES NOW (New West Records), the Grammy award winning Musselwhite and Billboard chart-topping GA-20 shine with a chemistry that blends the spirit of the Blues pioneers with an electrifying modern energy.

With BLUES NOW, the collaboration between GA-20 and Charlie Musselwhite embodies a living musical conversation that spans generations. It is an ongoing dialogue and testament to the enduring spirit of Blues music. It reaffirms its timeless appeal and reminds us that the Blues is a living, breathing art form. It’s also a hell of a good time.

The Sun City Girls were unlike any band before them or that has come in their wake. Their catalog, their ethos, their *being* - you name it, with the Girls that “it” was singular and became legend. This singularity started early and extended to their release schedule and the means behind the same. While the band would prove to be wildly prolific throughout their existence, during their nascent days they quickly realized that they could not be contained by any sort of traditional label schedule. Ideas were simply coming to the trio too rapidly to even entertain the notion of being constrained by the possibility of “only” releasing at most two albums a year. To best answer the flood of ideas the name of the game was move fast, record, release and move onto the next concept. This formed the concept and ethos behind the band’s Cloaven Cassette project.

Running from 1987 through 1990, Cloaven Cassettes ultimately covered a staggering twenty-two titles. The releases themselves were as close to the textbook definition of punk as possible – hand dubbed with photocopied covers (sometimes including some crayon or marker to individual a copy) to result in something cheap and ready to sell and gigs and the sort. The recordings that spanned these cassettes was equally punk and brimming over with the signature Girls’ spirit. One title might contain lo-fi deconstructed classic rock covers, another prank phone calls interspersed with free jazz inspired improvisations. The “you never know what you are going to get” spirit that ultimately inspired (and frustrated!) so many was here and on display from an early date.

Over half of these tapes have never been reissued in any fashion or format. Between 2003 and 2009 the late, great Eclipse Records re-released ten of the Cloaven Cassettes over a series of double albums which each represented two of the tapes. Three Lobed Recordings is proud to pick up the baton sixteen years later in an effort to complete chronicling these important and crucial artifacts of the American underground. Remastered from original sources and housed in heavy Stoughton gatefold jackets featuring tons of never-before-seen archival photos, these titles are surfacing in style. Each is from a one-time run of 1000 copies.

These next installments of the Sun City Girls Cloaven Cassettes releases on Three Lobed pairs “Cloaven Theatre” (assembled from Cloaven Cassettes #14, 15 and 18 originally released in 1987 and 1989) and “That Old Western Sieve” (Cloaven Cassette #21, originally released in 1989) as well as “The Palm Leaves of Victory” (Cloaven Cassette #13, originally released in 1987) with “Audio Letter to Mitch Myers” (Cloaven Cassette #19, originally released in 1989). For those who have never tracked down horribly sourced mp3 rips of any of these online, get ready for a world full of explorations that immediately drip with that one-of-a-kind Girls sound. A welcome respite in these current days, once again the Sun City Girls are here to the rescue when we least expected them. The past is the future is now.

OVERVIEW

An inspired coming together of musical minds. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of In A Space Outta Sound, George Evelyn aka DJ E.A.S.E has handed over the tapes to dub maestro Adrian Sherwood to go on a heady version excursion with eight tracks from the original record, in the spirit of the reggae and sound system roots that informed the original album. The result is a fresh take on a much-loved classic, in the lineage of albums such as Massive Attack’s No Protection and Spoon’s Lucifer On The Moon.

Features bold new re-works of iconic tracks such as “You Wish” (appearing here as “You Bliss”) and “Flip Ya Lid” (mutated into “Flippin Eck”). As well as his trademark mixing desk wizardry, Sherwood has also brought in some of the core On-U Sound players to add additional instrumentation and turn this collaboration into something which is much more than the sum of its parts.

TRACK LISTING:

Master, We Perish’s deluxe reissue is newly remastered and expanded.

The Body’s landmark record Master, We Perish, originally released in 2013, found the acclaimed duo at a crossroads in their career. Recorded just before the duo of drummer Lee Buford and guitarist/vocalist Chip King were leaving their longtime home of Providence for Portland and released in between their breakthrough albums All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood and Christs, Redeemers, Master expanded on the duo’s love of layered worldbuilding with more precision and a stronger emphasis on percussive samples than ever before. The seeds of the duo’s celebrated collaborative inclination are evident as the album features Assembly of Light Choir leader Chrissy Wolpert, choir member Reba Mitchell, Otesanek vocalist Leslie Weitz, and guitarist David Lifrieri. With the expanded edition, the album’s striking cover painting by Providence mainstay Manifester aka Matt Brinkman (Mindflayer, Forcefield) is finally rendered in its original form.

Master, We Perish is expanded with rare bonus tracks from The Body’s early days, taken from a pair of rare 7” singles Cop Killer/Dead Cops as well as a split with Get Killed. These storied singles mark the first time the band truly pushed the boundaries of sound in the studio and on record. It also marks the beginning of The Body’s practice of wielding the studio as a veritable weapon to translate their gargantuan sound with deeper impact on LP. The results are not only pushing the capacity of the album format but are sonically riveting. The bonus material was recorded at Machines with Magnets. The band described them economically: “NASTY.”

“Master, We Perish… lashes at perceived and muchdebated divisions between metal and noise so hard and so fast that its tremendous squall and anthemic structures might actually be the sound of those fortified seams splintering… every bit as exhilarating and intimidating as you might hope” - Pitchfork, 8.1

THRILL JOCKEY

Four years near the beginning of the last decade, William Cashion and Bruce Willen created quietly radiant instrumental music from two tessellated guitars, a few modest synths, and a slew of percussive and noisy toys, like walkie-talkies or the things that gave the pair their handle, bells. This 2016 live recording is taken from the band’s next-to-last show, at least for now, cut in an artist-run space called The Compound in their hometown of Baltimore. Peals is the project of two bassists known best for their other livewire and loud Baltimore bands: Future Islands for Cashion, Double Dagger for Willen. Technically, Double Dagger—an absolutely electrifying post-punk trio—had reached its end just as Cashion and Willen began talking about trying to make music together, but that context never really mattered.

Peals emerged at an inconvenient moment for their sort of instrumental wonder. The noisy international explorations of great acts like Yellow Swans, Growing, and Fuck Buttons (all duos, mind you) had mostly subsided before Peals played their first show in April 2012. And the current bloom in New Age and ambient music was very much still germinating, those terms still catching substantial side-eye from arbiters of acceptability. That was steadily changing, however, as Peals offered this set in September 2016, with the United States unknowingly at the edge of successive upheavals that would increasingly make such sounds feel like requisite medicine.

Writing to you from 2026, then, this recording does not feel at all out-oftime, like some overlooked gem that was simply swallowed by its moment. It sounds relevant, welcoming, welcome. These 38 seamless minutes have clear predecessors: Manuel Göttsching’s E2-E4, Cluster and Eno’s Cologne dalliances, the way Midwest Emo could sound smarter than its lyrics read. I hear bits of old spirituals and Appalachian banjo music, too, nested inside the guitars. But the way Cashion and Willen stitched it all together ignored any rules of what this music was supposed to be, so that very gentle passages abutted joyously jarring ones, so that the saxophone line that unexpectedly offers the denouement here feels as though it were birthed by a symphony of chattering guitars. It’s a sound meant for you to inhabit, to take a walk around, to notice.

Peals is the duo of William Cashion (Future Islands) and Bruce Willen (Double Dagger).

The Compound 76 captures one of the duo’s tentpole performances in crystalline detail by engineer/mixer Craig Bowen (Lungfish, Animal Collective, Dan Deacon), with mastering by Mat Leffler-Schulman and a guest performance by Baltimore saxophonist Andy Abelow.

The album’s layout is by Willen, a multidisciplinary artist, designer, musician, and head of Baltimore design group Public Mechanics. Cover photo of the salvaged drywall is by Baltimore artist and The Compound board member Nicholas Wisniewski.

“The duo layers delicately woven guitars on top of a rough drum loop, and the results prove that “unassuming” doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t be paying attention.” - FADER

“The yin-yang dynamic between Cashion and Willen’s other, louder outfits and the more meditative Peals flares as electric guitars knife upward against the track’s lullaby rhythm. That minimal tension suggests the song forward until it too dissolves into a wave of calming feedback, preserving Peals’ soothing wash of textures.”Pitchfork

MIZMOR - YODH 2LP

BLURB INFO

Original 2016 description:

Although there have been a number of EPs and split releases over the last four years, Mizmor has not released a full-length record since its self-titled first album in 2012. A.L.N. (the sole member of Mizmor) and Gilead Media are excited to announce this new installment entitled Yodh.

An epic conceptual exploration, Yodh finds the project at its most focused state. Over the course of the 60+ minute, five-track album Mizmor takes the listener to a place entirely new for the band. The album is an impassioned struggle with the nature of survival - why humankind continually chooses life each day in the face of adversity, pain, depression, and suffering.

2X12” DOOM, BLACK METAL 659696574618

TRACKLIST:

Yodh is also elevated in its display of Mizmor’s most fully realized sonic experience. The album was recorded by A.L.N. himself, meticulously mixed by Sonny DiPerri, and mastered by Adam Gonsalves. This creative team pushes the sonic limits further than any previous Mizmor material in order to present a finished audio product suitable for such demanding themes. The result is simply brutal, harrowing and overwhelming blackened doom that surges with pure energy.

This album will be presented as a gatefold 2LP by Gilead Media, and as a self-released cassette edition. Both formats will feature packaging graced with four incredible works by painter Zdzisław Beksiński, licensed and scanned directly from the paintings themselves in Poland.

Sir Richard Bishop returns for a new spontaneous six-string meshing of people’s music, recollections and psychic intentions. Are y’all ready for some Hillbilly Erotica?

Migration from last album’s Ragas to this new Erotica is another chapter in Bishop’s progress, drifting via songs into the further frontiers of his pappy’s hometown sounds, trancing over and out in their hand-me-down clothes. As with the ragas, the ‘rotica’s hung round the neck of John Fahey ’s infamous dubbing of certain traditional American folk sounds as “American Primitive.” A perfectly good thought, but Sir Richard picks his own axe and chose a separate path. Rushing through gutters & picking pickled brains in the saucy headwaters of the down-low & literal American primitive, his hillbilly music is a mash of brined cultural inheritance, mini-ragas and moonshine-drunk savagery breaking out on the frets. As a conception for Sir Rick ’s acoustic guitar music, it’s a dynamite means and frame, centering his improvisations in a place overflown with pagan desire and unbound in deliverance. Here he flies up and down the neck, his manner less pristine, yet more exquisite, a flailing, flowing-on-the-river medley through stubborn whitewater turbulence, post-grass and folk’s classical gas. Anybody who takes a snort of this here Hillbilly Erotica will find a frankly spellbinding richness of intent and execution in their ear-mouths. And may thereafter find brain and blightness. It’s fine!

As Sir Richard reminds us, Hillbilly Erotica is:

“…still exploring the areas around these parts with a similar type of aggression [as Hillbilly Ragas], but as morning light approaches, a clearing or two present themselves, with hills and valleys viewable in the distance inspiring a slightly different sonic landscape. One could be forgiven for feeling a sense of relief from finally arriving from out of the night-time woods to a place which may seem less threatening in the daylight, but it’s a trap the darkness of night is always right around the corner. Enjoy the postcoital smoke but tread carefully!”

Like with Hillbilly Ragas, Sir Richard plays one acoustic guitar on all eight Hillbilly Erotica cuts, no overdubs and, but for the closing “Postcoital Serenade,” improvised entirely. The not-so-sexy ‘sexy’ angle of song titles like “Lick Skillet,” “Sweet Lips,” “Hookers Bend,” and “Finger, Tennessee” is actually actual names for dots on the map in rural TN, each one just five minutes removed by horse, of course from Richard’s dad's remote Enville homestead, its town name purloined previously for a song on 2020’s Oneiric Formulary. This ancestral interzone’s a venue of interest for Rick, allowing him to ask the deep questions, like “What the hell has been going on around here with place names like these?” while running down the changes like no one else before.

Hillbilly Erotica promises unspoken wonders of the world around each and every dark corner, revelations of legacy, a new spyglass to sight your forebears! Imagined American music at its most gorgeous and violent, simply achieved by Sir Richard Bishop through a powerful application of steel-stringed instrumentation and delightfully exhaustive flights of speculative thought.

ED ASKEW’S FINAL ALBUM IN ALL OTHER COUNTRIES

Time stands stunningly still on The Final Painting, the dreamy, elegiac final album from legendary underground singer-songwriter/poet/ painter Ed Askew.

Ed started his singing career in 1968 with a self-titled LP release on NYC’s infamous freejazz/free-folk ESP-Disk' label. Known today as Ask the Unicorn, this album is wintry psychfolk of the highest order, with Ed’s yearning lyrics and high-strung vocals fully emoting over the bright, mandolin-like strum of his chosen axe, the South American tiple. The record caused a flare of acclaim, but after a second album went unreleased, Ed went back home to Connecticut, where, quietly and locally, he taught art, painted (houses AND paintings) and made music. Upon returning to New York in the early ‘80s, he began circulating cassettes of his self-recorded new songs. This was a fascinating and unlikely new chapter in his music, but only a few noticed. It wasn’t until De Stijl’s 2002 release of Little Eyes, his lost second album, that his naïve songs and singing began to receive the respect they deserved.

It was just enough visibility to dream a bit bigger. In 2013, Jerry David DeCicca produced For the World (featuring Sharon Van Etten, Marc Ribot, Mary Lattimore and Eve Searls), augmenting Ed’s performances with minimal instrumental touches and vocal harmonies, presenting his music in a wonderful new light. Released on the UK-based Tin Angel Records, it resulted in several European tours, where Ed shared bills with Destroyer, Trembling Bells and the Incredible String Band’s Mike Heron. In the years following, additional new and archival Askew recordings have been released through Tin Angel, Drag City and Improved Sequence Records.

By the time Ed turned 80 in 2020, his health was declining to the point that touring was impossible and even leaving his place was a challenge. In his Brooklyn apartment, he continued to tape new songs, posting them on his Bandcamp page. In 2022, Jerry called Ed to compliment him on the songs. Their stark and fragile quality was singular, inspiring thoughts of a new production fleshing out Ed 's two-track home recordings. Ed was into it; he forwarded nearly three dozen songs in different stages of completion and the two plotted a path forward. For the World featured acoustic piano, banjo and harp; the songs here, played by Ed on keyboards, synth and harmonica suggested trumpet, tenor saxophone and other sonic touches to expand their existentially lonely sound. Health scares for both men delayed things until early 2024, when various musicians recorded their parts either at home or in a Nashville Studio, with Styrofoam Winos’ Trevor Nikrant and Ryan Davis's Roadhouse Band taking their turns almost in response to one another.

ED ASKEW ON DRAG CITY:

The Final Painting not only defies the curse of sequels and the ten-year gap between the two DeCicca/Askew productions, it’s also a wonderous variation on the intimacy of the self-portrait, an expression from the twilight of one of the most unique artists to emerge in last half of the 20th century. The Final Painting reinvites For the World contributors Sharon Van Etten, Eve Searls, and Canaan Faulkner and new guests Bill Callahan, William Tyler, Ryan Jewell, Dustin Laurenzi, and Fulvio Sigurta. In their last conversation, just days before Ed passed in January 2025, he and Jerry agreed to: a) use the painting left on the easel of Ed 's now-empty apartment and b) call the album The Final Painting.

Profoundly resonant in the style of Frank Sinatra’s Watertown and David Bowie’s Blackstar, The Final Painting is faithful to the spirit of Ed Askew and his DIY nature and Modernist values, pursued for years and years throughout life, art and music, all the way to the very end.

BIG RIGS ON THE BQE PRISON

Track List:

Sunrise Highway Sunset Park

Prison’s third big one, Big Rigs on the BQE, finds our jammers of legend far away miles from Downstate (2025) and Upstate (2023): driving further down the road, Prison’s guitar, bass and drums compel them to dream LOUD. An improvised rock and roll tapestry, multiple impulses, intersections and lifelines rended with gas ‘n guitar pedal on down to the metal. Reflecting real lives lived today, sprawled and recalled in undulating electroacoustic performance.

STRAIGHT OUT OF PRISON ON DRAG CITY:

On March 7th 2024, Prison vets Sarim Al-Rawi, Matt Lilly and Paul Major on guitars & drums were joined by Mike Donovan on fuzz organ, percussionist Ryan Sawyer and Downstate’s Matt Leibowitz (back on bass, and synth too this time) at a Sunset Park studio where they could see the fucking highway from the studio windows. It kind of set the tone. Downstate guitarist Adam Reich switched it up too; as studio honcho/engineer/mixer, he scored a couple fx/remix passages that are of the performance on both sides.

Big Rigs on the BQE is the sound of Sarim, Matt, Paul, Mike, Ryan, Matt and Adam in wicked battle and glorious play, a far-ranging scrum of Groundhogs/ Velvets/Hampton’s/Pink Fairies/Magic Band/ Good Rats/Can propositions powering guitars, bass, drums and organ (&synth!) that day: a beast, imagining a better allegory for qualities of the ‘spirit of the jam/road trip’ duality.

Paul and Sarim’s vocal shouts transmit a kind of road-thoughts as they come, circular processing loosely knotted loops in different ranges and a couple different levels! These are deep, searing, multipurpose jams. Big Rigs on the BQE is a kind of travelogue, two side-long trips that take flight and fight another day in the never-ending process. It’s a beautiful opportunity to send new blasts of positive energy out to the world.

Prison of one, freedom of many!

The Devil Bought A Lemon And Now Nothing Grows Here It’s All The Same Somehow Things Are Looking Up I Heard You Got A Motorcycle (Everybody C’mon) Let’s Pretend To Be Free If You’ll Have Me The Great Big Joke

Firas Zreik Tarabesque

With Tarabesque, his powerful new album, Firas Zreik delivers his boldest and most visionary work to date. Fearlessly placing the kanun—the shimmering Mediterranean harp—at the center of a jazz quartet, a hybrid ensemble, and an Arab Takht ensemble, Zreik reimagines the instrument as both a rhythmic engine and melodic force. With dazzling virtuosity and deep emotional range, he builds a world of Maqam-driven melodies woven through rich harmonic and modal landscapes that feel fresh, organic, and defiantly new.

A master of the kanun and a boundary-pushing composer, Zreik draws from a profound understanding of Maqam—the modal system at the heart of Arab music—while expanding the instrument’s possibilities far beyond convention.

Tarabesque stands in the lineage of landmark recordings by fearless innovators such as Zyryab by Paco de Lucía, Blue Flame by Simon Shaheen, Dance of Fire by Aziza Mustafa Zadeh, and the work of virtuosic tradition-bearers who transformed heritage into contemporary language.

Based in New York City, Zreik is a Palestinian composer and kanunist whose career has brought him to leading international stages and collaborations. He recently received Grammy recognition as a songwriter, composer, and performer on Residente’s award-winning album Las Letras Ya No Importan, and earlier this year composed,

His growing list of accolades includes being an official showcase artist at WOMEX 2022, a fellow at MacDowell in 2023, and the only musician named to Arab America’s 30 Under 30 in 2022. He has presented his work at iconic venues including Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, Roulette Intermedium, and The Jazz Gallery.

With Tarabesque (his third album), Zreik marks more than a personal milestone—he signals the emergence of a new musical language. Merging Tarab—the ecstatic, immersive state of listening central to Arab musical traditions—with the global influences he has absorbed across continents and scenes, he creates a sound that is timeless, urgent, and entirely his own.

Stare Away In Absence

à La Carte Records announces In Absence, the debut EP from Stare Away, the solo project of New York City-based musician Ben Nelson. The seven-track record arrives July 31st, 2026, introduced by three singles across the spring and summer.

Stare Away deals in the kind of music that treats mood as structure — songs where the atmosphere isn’t decorative but load-bearing. Nelson builds from the inside out, layering brooding, synthdriven arrangements beneath melodies that linger well past their welcome. The result is a sound rooted in the emotional vocabulary of 1980s post-punk and new wave without feeling like an exercise in nostalgia — retrofitted with enough tension and self-awareness to feel firmly present tense.

If The Chameleons perfected the art of finding grandeur inside bleakness, In Absence understands that assignment. The project has spent the past year

Genres: Post-Punk, New Wave

RIYL: Tears For Fears, When In Rome, The Chameleons

earning its stripes on the road, logging support runs alongside Rosegarden Funeral Party, House of Harm, and Blood Club, as well as an official SXSW 2026 appearance and festival dates at Dark Spring Boston and the Dead of Winter Dark Arts Festival. These are not incidental credentials — they speak to where Stare Away has found its audience and how that audience has responded.

In Absence will arrive track by track, with “Parting Ways” leading the way on May 8th, followed by “Familiar” on June 5th and “Seek Out” on July 3rd, before the full seven-song EP drops July 31st. In Absence is out July 31st, 2026 on à La Carte Records.

Wild Up — Julius Eastman, Vol. 5: Gay

Wild Up has been lauded as one of classical music’s most exciting groups by virtually every significant institution and critic within earshot. In 2010, Artistic Director Christopher Rountree founded Wild Up with 15 musicians. Today, this GRAMMY®-nominated ensemble comprises 32 performers, with membership ranging from award-winning composers to experts in contemporary techniques, baroque music specialists, activists, studio musicians, indie artists, and educators. Julius Eastman Vol. 5: Gay Guerilla is just the latest thrilling chapter in Wild Up's ongoing Eastman compendium, which has earned three GRAMMY nominations.

In an oeuvre with no shortage of provocation, Gay Guerrilla stands among Eastman's most daring statements: An epochal work that sanctifies queerness and envisions a genuine revolution of gay liberation. As Eastman shared in remarks preceding Gay Guerrilla’s 1980 premiere: “If there is a cause — and if it is a great cause — those who belong to that cause will sacrifice their blood, because, without blood, there is no cause. So, therefore, that is the reason that I use gay guerrilla, in hopes that I might be one, if called upon to be one.”

Wild Up reaffirms the point made by the musicologist and composer Luciano Chessa: “If all of Eastman’s music but this one were to disappear, Gay Guerrilla would still be enough to guarantee him a firm place in the history of twentieth-century music” throughout Vol. 5, drawing out the compositional characteristics and urgent themes that mark Eastman as a singular figure in American Experimentalism: queered allusions to Lutheran hymnals, almost unbearably tense passages of frenzied repetition, and explosions of melodic ecstasy. It’s a testament to the ensemble’s carefully-honed ability to perform Eastman’s idiosyncratic scores in a spirit befitting its creator.

“You can make your music however you want to, you just have to be vulnerable enough to take that leap.” This sentiment, shared by composer Darian Donovan Thomas with ~Nois’ Julian Velasco in 2023, spurred What is ~Nois to its beginning. “We wanted to make something that we really liked while not being limited by the traditional perceptions of the relationships between composers and performers,” says Lulloff. “This feeling really embodies the idea behind ~Nois…new music, new ideas, new sounds that all have the saxophone as a core part of it but it's not solely a capital ‘S’ sax, capital ‘Q’, quartet record.”

~Nois’ dedication to commissioning new music by living composers has brought them to the forefront of new chamber music, and the four powerful performances on What is ~Nois further solidify their footing as one of the most forward thinking chamber ensembles active today.

Darian Donovan Thomas’ “Sun Thrower” opens the album with an epic 10-minute piece that mixes shimmering ambient textures, soaring saxophone solos, and pumping electronic drums that coalesce into a dream-like memory of dancing. The piece features Thomas on live effects processing, Natalia Warthen on the opening alto solo, and special guest and founding member of ~Nois, Hunter Bockes, on alto saxophone.

“alternate endings.,” a piece expressing rage and frustration around climate change, by composer and guitarist Aeryn Jade “AJ” Santillan, casts the full quartet into the role of a guitar embedded within a post-punk band.

The three movement album closer, “Running in a Field of Flowers” by saxophone quartet veteran Travis Laplante, reminisces on a time in his life when “he was consciously more connected to the Earth through listening.” A Closer Listen said it best: "If this is noise, it's a joyful noise."

Nondi_ Bonus Nondi…

Eighteen Nondi_ tracks, specially selected by Mike Paradinas for an exclusive, very limited bonus CD.

Following her acclaimed 2023 release Flood City Trax, a dreamy, lo-fi take on footwork inspired by the crumbling rust-belt city she calls home, Nondi returns to Planet Mu with her second self-titled album, Nondi…

While Nondi… retains some of the hazy, nostalgic atmosphere of Flood City Trax, it pushes her sound in bold new directions.

“I made this album to capture the sense of freedom I used to get from music when I was first discovering it all,” Nondi says. “It’s meant to be cute, fun, kinda weird and emotional — but most of all, it’s a presentation of some of the prettiest tracks I’ve made.”

Though she hasn’t really experienced club culture where she lives, her impressionistic productions evoke the surreal, lingering sounds of a night out — the melodic haze that hums in your ears as you drift off to sleep. Lo-fi and melodic, yet fluid and free, her music carries a sense of flight and intuitive logic.

Nondi’s influences range widely — Actress, Aphex Twin, footwork, and the stranger edges of dub techno are all felt, yet she hallucinates them through her own weathered, dreamlike lens. Her tracks often build from clashing loops that evolve and transform organically, or from familiar genre elements reshaped by her instinct for misty, heart-wrenching melody.

Some moments stay closer to genre, like Broken Future 175, a drumand-bass tear-out that dissolves into lush, blurred chords, or Just Hanging Out, a bruised and beautiful take on 2-step. Lead single Tree Festival feels like a blown-out fusion of rave energy and sped-up newage bliss, while Death Juke drifts through off-beat vocal samples, pulsing drums and 8-bit FX, reminiscent of early Steve Reich reimagined through a Game Boy.

Nondi… is a uniquely moving and exploratory album that expands her sonic world even further. Lo-fi yet luminous, playful yet profound.

Bondo (LP + Digital)

Solid Brass Records

Catalog #: SBR39

Street Date: July 31 2026

Los Angeles band Bondo balances force & restraint. Their music is worldbuilding in a science fiction sort of way. The four-piece has honed their own type of post-rock/slowcore, built upon a strong foundation of live dynamics and a proprietary instrumental language. Their sound is narrative-like: a dream logic which is both intuitive and natural.

Start Track music blog says, “Bondo’s whole sound-world is foggy and deliberately obfuscatory. Music like this could easily disappear into the background – it’s not clamouring for attention.”

Aquarium Drunkard called Bondo, “...a four-piece riffing on a vibe something like ‘Spiderland’ floating in a quarry with Fugazi’s latter-era instrumental explorations.”

Their most recent album finds Bondo once again recording live, combing through songs they know well with sincerity. While continuity persists through their 11 track offering, the band demonstrates a range of songwriting styles. Some tracks are more traditional, featuring verses and choruses that are easy to latch onto. Others rely on their signature instrumental sound, building subtle structures while still allowing room for meditations that ultimately dissolve into space.

Some days the album feels like it’s always been there humming in the background, nostalgic and warm. Other days there’s a new sound or a good note that leaves you wondering why you never noticed it before.

Bondo recently teamed up with LA based Solid Brass Records for the release of their 3rd studio album, ‘Bondo’, which releases on 7/31/26 and will be available digitally and on classic black vinyl.

Yes, Virginia... Tailor’s Version

Released 08/07/2026

The Dresden Dolls announce a global tour and the re-recorded release of Yes, Virginia… (Tailor’s Version), out on vinyl, CD, and all streaming platforms August 7, 2026. Guest vocalists include Jinkx Monsoon and Veronica Swift.

The pioneering punk cabaret duo of Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione enter a new chapter with a full re-recording of their 2006 album Yes, Virginia…, tracked in Boston. The new release arrives August 7, 2026, followed by a tour across the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Europe.

The title nods to Taylor Swift’s reclamation of master recordings. After a 20-year contract with Roadrunner Records, the band regained the right to re-record their catalog. The announcement comes nearly 20 years after the original release.

The track list remains unchanged (with a bonus track on vinyl and CD), while performances reflect two decades of artistic and personal evolution. Known for Viglione’s orchestral drumming and Palmer’s percussive piano and songwriting—exploring sexuality, identity, addiction, capitalism, and social isolation—this version brings new depth. Songs including “My Alcoholic Friends,” “Sex Changes,” and “Backstabber” return with renewed intensity.

Recorded in late 2025 at Mad Oak Studios, the album was tracked mostly live with Benny Grotto and mixed by Paul Kolderie. It also features artwork by Niki McQueen.

The release signals a resurgence: nearly 3 million Spotify followers, over 240 million streams for “My Alcoholic Friends,” and a recent platinum certification. Formed in Boston in 2000, The Dresden Dolls helped define “punk cabaret” and continue to reach new audiences.

SUPERHEAVEN OURS IS CHROME

NOW ON METALLIC SILVER VINYL!

Ours Is Chrome is the 2nd studio album by Philly rockers Superheaven, produced and mixed by Grammy-winner Will Yip (Title Fight, Turnstile). Originally formed as Daylight in 2007, the grunge revivalists changed their name to Superheaven in 2014. Although their name changed, their sound, which drew upon the driving and sludgy melodies of the ‘90s for inspiration, remained, with nods to bands like Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden still intact. Looking to reintroduce themselves to the world, they reissued their full-length debut, Jar, under their new name in 2014. The following year saw them ink a deal with SideOneDummy and release Ours Is Chrome. The record has since amassed over 200 million streams, and since the band reformed in 2023, they have become Platinum-selling recording artists and currently have 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Death has always been an unwelcome but integral component of inspiration for Mike Newman. The music he makes as summerbruise—which he started as a solo project in 2015 and which has since blossomed and bloomed into a fully-fledged band of close friends—has been both haunted and propelled by it since it all began, notably by two separate and significant occurrences of it. The first was the death of his dad in 2016. The second was the death of his close friend Kyle some eight months later, just after the release of summerbruise’s first release, the seven-track bummer vacation. Both of those losses triggered a fascination with death that has seeped into summerbruise’s songs, and which finds itself rearing its morbid head again on Infinity Guise, the band’s first actual, proper, real-life, full-length debut album.

“This was so much more of a team effort,” continues Newman. “So much of this album was stuff I had nothing to do with—it’s definitely the first record that was completely written by more than one person. On The View Never Changes I wrote the lyrics, bass, drum and guitar parts—everything. With this one, I wrote the lyrics and a couple of guitar parts, but less than 20% of this album is me. Which is very exciting.”

This album, then, is what Newman calls “Summerbruise 2.0”, where he’s harnessed an almost Power Rangers-esque, well, power to bring this next phase of the band into existence.

The result is a set of songs—recorded at producer Nick Starrantino’s Dead End Studios in Long Island—that play tug-of-war between Newman’s own quirky vulnerability and the steady guiding hand of his musical co-conspirators. Opener “Making It Worse” combines neurotic self-awareness and emotional openness— as well as a good deal of self-flagellating humor—while “What Do You Mean “Guise”?” confronts the idea of mortality alongside a wholehearted dose of anxiety about the fear of dying.

“I didn’t expect this to go anywhere,” he admits. “I’ve just always thought being in a band would be the coolest fucking thing ever. And I tried and failed a few times throughout my life to write music, and just eventually decided I didn’t have the music writing gene, and that was fine because I would just have to be good at something else. So I graduated college and was going to be a teacher for the rest of my life, and then I got dumped. I was really bummed out and I tried to write a stand-up routine about something I was feeling. I was drunk and the next morning when I went back to re-read it, it wasn’t funny at all. It was just depressing. But then I turned that into the first summerbruise song. I was 25 or so and like, ‘Wait, if I can write a song, I can finally fucking start a band!’”

As this album proves, that was the start of something very special indeed.

THE CURSE OF PUBLIC OPINION

Sometimes the only way to feel better is to spend some time feeling bad. Countless albums have provided the soundtrack for picking yourself back up, but Public Opinion are there for when you’re getting kicked while you’re down. Their sophomore album, the cheekily titled The Curse of Public Opinion, is a ten-song, 23-minute ode to frustration and disappointment–all set to some of the catchiest punk songs you’ll hear this year. Who knew swallowing a bitter pill could be this fun?

Along with TLC, En Vogue was the girl group of the ‘90s (the two acts are touring together right now, btw, along with SaltN-Pepa). And 1997’s EV3 was the best-selling album of their career, rocketing to #8 on the charts and scoring three hit singles with “Don’t Let Go (Love),” “Whatever,” and “Too Gone, Too Long.” All this in the midst of band turmoil with the departure of Dawn Robinson, who left in the middle of the album sessions (though she still remains on most of the album tracks). EV3 has never seen a widespread vinyl release, and we’re doing it right, with a remastered double-LP pressed in light blue vinyl housed inside a gatefold jacket. ‘90s R&B at its finest!

CAUSE OF DEATH

(Remastered Gray with Black Splatter Vinyl Edition)

STREET

DATE: AUGUST 7, 2026

Obituary’s second album stands astride the annals of death metal and will stay there…eternally. That’s because very few albums in any genre come close to matching its intensity; Cause of Death alternates (often in the same song) between the sludgiest power chords known to mortal man and breakneck tempos that verge on hardcore punk. All punctuated, of course, by the unearthly, guttural maledictions of vocalist John Tardy (one reviewer described them as “senseless gurgles”). This is the only Obituary album with former Death, Disincarnate, and Testament guitarist James Murphy, who contributes leads that, oddly, at times sound almost classical; it also features a no-holds-barred cover of Celtic Frost’s “Circle of the Tyrants” endorsed by Celtic Frost themselves. Throw in Michael Phelan’s foreboding cover art (originally used in a H.P. Lovecraft anthology, and originally intended for a Sepultura album cover), and there’s a reason why this 1990 release remains such a singular record in a genre where the surfeit of fury can flatten the differences between acts and albums. No, Cause of Death is one of a kind, and, for its first American reissue in nearly 30 years, we’ve remastered it for vinyl and pressed it in gray with black splatter vinyl, complete with insert. A metal must.

But before those brushes with fame, the band carved out a reputation as a political street band in Greenwich Village, and you can see them in action on the front cover of this album, released on the Metromedia label in 1970. BOB AZZAM AND THE GREAT EXPECTATION: BOB AZZAM AND THE GREAT EXPECTATION

(REMASTERED FIRE ORANGE VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: AUGUST 7, 2026

This 1969 oddity goes for big bucks if you can find it for a couple of obvious reasons. First, the drum break on the cover of Alvin Toussaint’s classic “Rain Rain (Go Away)” has become legend among crate diggers and samplers. The other is that the version of the Stones’ “The Last Time” is astonishingly psychedelic, a delirium of fuzz guitar, electric sitar, rumbling piano, and throbbing bass punctuated by soaring, Left Banke-esque vocal choruses. But, those highlights aside, this one-off album from Egyptian vocalist Wadie George “Bob” Azzam and his merry band of pranksters is a refreshingly eclectic and highly listenable affair leavened with a hint of electronic weirdness a la Lothar and the Hand People or Silver Apples. “Mon Amour” pays tribute to Azzam’s Middle Eastern roots with a jaunty Arabic melody, while he brings a Beatle-esque sensibility to the two Les Reed covers, “Mr. Lovin’ Luggage Man” and “One Little Packet of Cigarettes.” And “Berimbau” offers an unexpected outburst of Tropicalismo. In short, not just a rarity, but a record to appeal to anybody with a warped pop sensibility…and ain’t that all of us? Trouser Press Record Guide wrote:

Long before self-reflective female singers became the hip trend on the alternative music scene, Beth Brown of Rochester, New York’s Absolute Grey was writing and singing about loneliness and the challenge of independence…a garage-pop approach, the bass carrying most of the melody and the guitar adding color with Peter Buck-like arpeggios.

All Music Guide says:

Absolute Grey was playing intelligent, tuneful folk-rock with intriguing melodies, subtle but effective hooks, and a psychedelic undertow that would have allowed them to fit right in with the paisley underground bands blossoming on the West Coast or the jangle pop armies gathering in Athens, GA - their approach was a bit less trippy and significantly less retro than such paisley underground stalwarts as the Rain Parade while the band’s tone was notably cooler and more hard-edged than what R.E.M or Pylon brought to the table.

Byron Coley of Forced Exposure declares:

“Absolute Grey created a wonderful sound, one that has never been imitated by anyone. You can hear traces of bands that came later, sounds that evolved after the next generation had digested stacks of obscure records, but you always get the sense that Absolute Grey arrived at their sound through epiphany rather than scholarship. Beth Brown’s vocals are so filled with emotion they are teetering on the edge of chaos. She puts all of herself into it…the band create this great ‘new wave folk rock’ whatsis with no real idea of where the hell it’s going to go. They just slap it out, and man, it just works so great.”

Nobody recorded as much as keyboardist/ composer Doug Carn did for the Black Jazz label; his four records for the imprint are recognized as spiritual/free/soul jazz classics, Carn’s 1971 debut for Black Jazz, Infant Eyes, introduced his stylistic wrinkle of adding lyrics to jazz classics like John Coltrane’s “Acknowlegement (A Love Supreme),” Horace Silver’s “Peace,” and Wayne Shorter’s title track, all sung by the gorgeous, thrilling voice of his wife Jean Carn. A crack outfit of drummer Michael Carvin, saxophonist/flautist George Harper, trombonist Al Hall, Jr., trumpeter Bob Frazier, and bassist Henry Franklin (himself leader of two treasured Black Jazz releases) backs the couple. A moving, beautiful listen that sounds ever more contemporary, now remastered, annotated, and pressed in blue with black swirl vinyl limited to 500 copies.

Soul Jazz Records Presents VENEZUELA 70

Cosmic Visions Of A Latin American Earth – Venezuelan Experimental Rock In The 1970s

New 10th anniversary fully remastered special silver-vinyl edition of Soul Jazz Records’ ground-breaking Venezuela 70 featuring Vytas Brenner, Pablo Schneider, Angel Rada, Miguel Angel Fuster and many more.

Venezuela 70 was the first ever compilation of its kind to take a look at the fascinating music scene created in Venezuela in the 1970s, a stunning blend of Funk, Latin Rock, European electronic experimentalism, Jazz and more!

Venezuela during the 1970s was both a modern cultural and economic powerhouse in Latin America, rich from vast oil supplies. Situated at the northern part of South America, with neighbouring Colombia to its west, Brazil to its south and a north coast bordering the Caribbean. The country’s position and wealth led to an explosion in cultural activity during this time.

Taking musical influences from all these surroundings as well as healthy doses of American musical sounds, the 1970s saw the evolution of a new generation of creative Venezuelan artists such as Vytas Brenner, Angel Rada, Pablo Schneider and Miguel Angel Fuster, who all explored the possibilities of creating a stunning ‘melting pot’ mix of underground rock, synthetic electronics, funk, jazz and Latin American while simultaneously exploring their links with Venezuelan roots music, creating a new sound.

Double vinyl comes with extended text and artists biographies across two inners + download. CD comes in new card-edition complete with full text.

Soul Jazz Records Presents CALYPSO

Musical Poetry In The Caribbean 1955-69

“A joyous compilation. Lovingly annotated, it’s a glimpse into a now distant era when the Caribbean first took on the world and won” The Guardian

“This glorious Soul Jazz compilation explores Calypso’s roots as party music that doubled as a delivery system for current events, street wisdom, social humour, and reflections on daily life.” Pitchfork

Soul Jazz Records’ ‘Calypso – Musical Poetry in the Caribbean’ was first issued in 2014 and has been out of print for nearly 10 years. On its release ‘Calypso’ was voted one of the year’s best 50 reissues in Rolling Stone magazine and received glowing reviews in Pitchfork, The Guardian, Songlines and many more. This new edition has been fully remastered and comes as a one-off limited-edition double vinyl pressing on translucent green vinyl, complete with bespoke inners featuring extensive sleevenotes, notes on all the artists and songs featured, and original artwork and photography. The album is also available in a new card-edition CD package, also with complete notes and text. Featuring Lord Kitchener, The Mighty Viper, Count Zebra, Lord Flea, Lord Hummingbird, King Fighter, Lord Growler, Lord Byron, Lord Ivanhoe and other members of Calypso’s aristocracy and aristocrats, the album features the music of Calypso in its many styles.

Calypso is one of the most exciting and enduring forms of musical expression that first emerged at the beginning of the 20th century – swinging, persuasive rhythms, brilliantly expressive melodies, and lyrics of great humour, wisdom and wit. Here you will find music from Trinidad, birthplace of Calypso, other Caribbean islands including Jamaica and the Bahamas, as well as sounds from the style’s subsequent onwards journey including Britain, Panama and the United States.

Calypsonian songs play out a role in society similar to the storytelling Griots of West Africa (and the corresponding music of Kaiso); with their own tales about popular and incredible news items, modern life, local politics all mixed up with sexual innuendo, one-upmanship, comedy and more. At its source, Calypso is intricately and inextricably bound to the social history of Trinidad and its myriad of traditions, beliefs, folklore and fables. As the music spread around the world, both from the diaspora of many of its performers as well as its commercial success, the subjects of songs similarly took on local topics. The most notable singer of Calypso in England was the Trinidadian Lord Kitchener, who came to Britain in 1948 on HMS Empire Windrush, along with fellow Calypsonians Lord Beginner and Lord Woodbine.

The songs here vividly capture the popular news stories and fashions of the era – ‘The First Man On The Moon’, James Bond’s ‘Pussy Galore’, ‘Bed Bugs’, ‘Voodoo’, ‘Love in Cemeteries’, as well as West Indians in England, Bossa Nova, the Iron Curtain, and the story of a white man who had a black heart transplant operation. This album celebrates a criminally unsung and under-documented art form in the modern age.

“Decades before Hip-Hop became Black America’s most visible news source, Caribbean and British calypso stars were singing about current events in lilting tunes so seemingly carefree you barely noticed how sharply they were sticking it to the man. With chatty and conversational voices front and centre, carnival stars like Viper, Lord Hummingbird and Lord Flea delivered their sass amid suave, jaunty horns and percolating Afro-Caribbean percussion. // This collection focuses more on pop culture: Lord Cobra’s enthusiastic account of the 1969 moon landing is followed by Young Growler's bawdy celebration of James Bond consort ‘Pussy Galore.’ Calypso’s predominant voice, Lord Kitchener, is represented by the hilarious ‘Love in the Cemetery,’ wherein a resident warns him, ‘Mister, you be brave to be bringing your girlfriend atop me grave.’ ” Top 50 best reissues of 2014 - Rolling Stone magazine *****

“This joyous compilation aims to demonstrate Calypso’s pre-ska popularity across the Caribbean region and beyond. The album gathers 19 rare gems that find Calypsonians in Trinidad, Panama, Jamaica, NYC and London. The songs feature lots of witty innuendo along with deeper meditations on race and place. Top marks to Soul Jazz for avoiding obvious favourites and taking pride in the presentation of a music that, today, is often only noted during Carnival (in London and Trinidad).” Songlines *****

Soul Jazz Records Presents GIPSY RHUMBA

The Original Rhythm of Gipsy Rhumba in Spain 1965-74

Newly remastered and repackaged, Soul Jazz Records’ Gipsy Rhumba was first released to much-critical acclaim around the world in 2012, the album is a stunning mix of Latin, Funk, Flamenco and Rhumba rhythms.

The album is being released on deluxe double vinyl, complete with large text and lush photography across two inner sleeves. Also new limited-edition new-card sleeved CD, out of print for more than ten years.

The album is like no other and remains the first album ever outside of Spain to seriously focus on the history of Gipsy Rhumba, one of the most interesting musical culture clashes ever that first took place in the early 1960s.

In the Catalan region of Spain, Gypsies primarily known as the creators of Flamenco, came up with a fascinating hybrid style – Gipsy Rhumba – which blended together Latin and Rhumba music of Cuba and the Caribbean together with their own Flamenco as well as the emerging Rock and Roll from America.

The album tells this unique story of how this Latin-tinged music came about in the heart of Spain's gypsy community. The album comes with extensive sleevenotes, exclusive and stunning photography from the celebrated French photographer Jacques Leonard.

The album is put together by two of Spain's most important Gipsy Rhumba specialists - compiler David El Indio and sleevenotes by Jose Manuel Gómez (Gufi).

"A capsule of supercharged clapping and joyous vocals" THE GUARDIAN

"Must-have" "You all know Gipsy Kings' blend of flamenco and Latin rhythms… but where did this convergence of Latin music styles occur? This compilation demonstrates how mid-1960's Barcelona hot-housed gypsy musicians who employed the rumba rhythm… Gipsy Rhumba unearths a forgotten corner of Europop." THE SUNDAY TIMES

**** "Musicologists aren’t the only ones who will enjoy pulling at the threads that bind this particular sound clash… Messing with the traditional form is daring at any time, but the result was something quite fantastic, potent and intriguing, full of marvellous grooves and compelling rhythms." IRISH TIMES

***** ”A victory for gipsy party music… A collection worthy of conquering the world” DAGENS NYHETER, Sweden

"The great hidden treasure of Spanish music: pop rumba, especially ... Catalan rumba, which peaked commercially during the sixties and seventies However, in its country of origin, rumba discographically speaking, has disappeared… Hence the relevance of Gipsy Rhumba in Spain from 1965 to 1974, an anthology released by Soul Jazz, the discerning London-based company" EL PAIS, Spain

"Punchy, rhythmic and popular … Specialist Rumba research starts here with this compilation released by the London Soul Jazz label. Another genre of pop history." JUNGE WELT, Germany

Overmono Pure Devotion

STREET DATE: August 7th, 2026

Overmono’s long-awaited new album Pure Devotion arrives August 7, 2026. Marking the start of what promises to be a monumental year for the British brothers, the album embraces happy accidents, machine malfunctions, and beautiful imperfections, all underpinned by the unflinching confidence they’ve built since emerging as one of the defining electronic acts of the 2020s. Their 2023 debut Good Lies, hailed by The Guardian as “UK rave history distilled to perfection,” introduced Overmono on a global scale. Since then, collaborations with artists including Joy Orbison, High Contrast, Smerz, Fred again.., Lil Yachty, Skiifall, and The Streets have kept them firmly at the forefront of contemporary electronic music. Renowned for their award-winning audio-visual live show, Overmono reached new heights in 2025 with a headline set at Glastonbury’s West Holts stage and a sold-out Alexandra Palace, alongside debut appearances at major US festivals including Coachella, Portola, Lollapalooza, and Movement. In 2026, Pure Devotion will soundtrack a global run of headline shows and festival appearances across the US and beyond. As Stereogum noted, “the Russells know how to retain enough understated cool to keep their output riveting…”

TIME ON VINYL

Writing and recording the majority of Nocturnes at their home studio in Los Angeles, Leisha and Camila drew inspiration from '70s vinyl — and each other’s company. After finishing the demos, their friend Wendy Melvoin (of Prince and the Revolution) invited Uh Huh Her to continue the production at her treehouse studio in Henson Recording Studios (now Chaplin Studios). "We would just drink wine and record for hours and hours," Camila says of this time. "It was amazing. It was total freedom."

When it came time to mix Nocturnes, Melvoin suggested her friend and super producer Tchad Blake (The Bangles, Arctic Monkeys, Sheryl Crow, Cibo Matto), who put the finishing touches on the record from his studio in the English countryside. “It meant the world that our fans directly supported the mixing of the album through online eBay auctions of memorabilia, vinyl, art, and even a couple private dinners, because that enabled us to enlist the powers of the incredible Tchad Blake,” Cam says. The entirety of those original mixes have never seen the light of day until now, on this 2026.

As they contemplated rereleasing Nocturnes with Kill Rock Stars, Cam started digging around to find the album’s original mixes. “I chose Tchad’s first and second mix attempts because I wanted to preserve his first instincts before we gave him a million notes,” she says. This is truly how he heard it on one or two tries. The songs are longer, they're more rocked out, they're a little more raucous.”

Cam also surfaced a hypnotic song she’d written in 2020 called “Shook” to include on the rerelease. She says: “I wrote ‘Shook’ during the pandemic. The chorus was about being completely on my face, as everyone was during that time, feeling trapped. I had different lyrics for the verses, but then I thought, ‘I want to make this interesting.’ So I intermingled Leisha’s verses with my hook for the chorus. We made it into our own thing.”

Cam and Leisha also put their own, electrified spin on Sonic Youth’s timeless and gritty “Kool Thing.” She says: “I'm very riot grrrl-leaning, and I always loved that song. It feels timely. But I wanted the influence to feel intentional, not imitative. Something that inspired us but didn't overpower our own identity, so we slowed the tempo down, re-arranged it and layered the vocals.”

It all began with a bath. As Tele Novella’s Natalie Ribbons ran the water and listened to a guided meditation, she never anticipated arriving on the other side with an idea for an album, Poet’s Tooth. “I ended up sitting in that bath and going on quite a visualization journey,” says Ribbons, who resides in Lockhart, Texas, and performs in Tele Novella with Jason Chronis. “The images and feelings that came over me that night made me feel like I had a power that I had been ignoring and taking for granted for years. It was sad and happy at the same time,” Ribbons continues.

MyPainandSadnessIsMoreSadandPainfulThanYours

On August 7th, Beggars Banquet will reissue the debut album by mclusky. Originally released in 2000 on Fuzzbox and re-released by Beggars imprint Too Pure in 2003, My Pain and Sadness Is More Sad and Painful Than Yours introduced Cardiff band mclusky as an urgent new voice in UK rock music.

Now, 26 years on, the album has been remastered by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios and is presented on 180g black vinyl, retaining its original artwork.

Capturing the band at their most immediate and raw, My Pain and Sadness Is More Sad and Painful Than Yours coined mclusky’s blend of serrated guitars, dark humour and Andrew Falkous’ pointed, often absurdist lyricism.

Predating later acclaim for albums such as Mclusky Do Dallas and The Difference Between Me and You Is That I’m Not on Fire, the debut captures the band in a more unfiltered state, volatile and direct. Tracks like “Joy” and “Rice Is Nice” hint at the precision and bite that would follow, while much of the album leans into repetition, tension and release with an almost menacing minimalism.

Tropical Fuck Storm – Fairyland Codex

Genre-bending Tropical Fuck Storm present a special edition of their critically acclaimed album ‘Fairyland Codex,’ on their label home Fire Records – this edition includes an oversized poster featuring art by Joe Becker. Recorded with co-producer Michael Beach at the band’s Dodgy Brothers studio in Nagambie, Australia, the songs on ‘Fairyland Codex’ immerse us in the chaos of a fateful landslide, picking out the characters that litter the impending collapse of society.

Acidic, acerbic, anarchic; Tropical Fuck Storm's command of wordplay, undercut by snarling guitars, pulsing rhythms, and explosive salvos, populates a hinterland between light and dark. The vocal interplay between Liddiard and the soaring harmonies of Kitschin and Dunn creates a teetering balancing act that’s intensified by the frantic narratives that evolve from their collective psyche.

“Tropical Fuck Storm are masters of tension and release.” The Guardian

Tropical Fuck Storm formed when guitarist and vocalist Gareth Liddiard and bassist and vocalist Fiona Kitschin’s previous band, The Drones, went on hiatus in 2016. Joined by guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist Erica Dunn and drummer Lauren Hammel, the group has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and gained a reputation for their incendiary live shows.

Anton Toorell’s second solo album, Solos II, intensifies the rich six-string poetics of his 2022 debut Solos. By narrowing his focus to playing and tuning, the Swedish guitarist, composer and producer deepens his relationship with the instrument, resulting in three tracks of cascading tonality that feel rigorous yet lightly handled. Conceptual ideas never overshadow the lustrous sounds Toorell draws from two guitars.

Across ‘Volta’, ‘Cripta’ and ‘Scala’, Toorell plays two guitars simultaneously, one fretted with the left hand while the right hand works open strings on a guitar in his lap. Despite the technical demands, the music never feels showy; the technique serves a compositional and improvisational clarity, allowing room for resonance and chance while remaining beautifully poised.

‘Volta’ unfolds over seventeen minutes of shimmering, cyclical motion, its small cluster of tones constantly varied. ‘Cripta’ spirals hypnotically, recalling both Terry Riley’s repetition and the hallucinatory loops of early Seefeel. The closing ‘Scala’ foregrounds the space itself: recorded in a 16th-century wine cellar at Palazzo Stabile in Piemonte, the room becomes a third instrument, shaping the tunings and reverberations.

Throughout Solos II, something liminal seems to slip between the notes. It is music that feels architectural yet intimate, built from repetition but animated by the minute variations of human touch, and by an artist deeply attuned to both instrument and space.
