Redeye Label of the Month Q&A

Learn

more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight!

This Issue: Conor Mackie and Dina Young at Royal Mountain Records

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

Conor (A&R): My first real music industry job was actually here at the label. I had just moved to Toronto from the UK, I knocked on the door and asked for an internship and was met with “uhhhhhh…. maybe?” and, 10 years later, here we are.

Dina (Label Manager): I moved to Toronto to pursue a career in the music industry from the west coast of Canada and have spent the last 15 years helping artists achieve their goals through various label, marketing and management roles, and keep Conor in line here.

Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?

Conor: I’ve been playing in terrible bands since my early teens, through my 20s, and continue to play in terrible bands in my mid30s.

When and where did the label begin?

The label technically started in Montreal (we’re named after Mont-Royal) but it very quickly made its way to Toronto, which has absolutely become its real home and the only city we really associate with (no shade to Montreal, we love it there, we just ne parle pas français…)

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

As a catch-all, we work with “alternative” music, but we don’t have a specific genre within that sphere that is our sole focus. We’ve released indie rock records, electronic records, punk records, folk records, emo records, hip hop records, indie pop records - basically, if it’s good and we like it, we’ll work it. Variety is the spice of life.

How has the label changed since it started? How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

Not too much has changed honestly (except now it’s just Conor and Dina running things) - the goals and ambitions for the label remain the same today as they did the first day we started. First and foremost, the aim has always just been to champion artists that we think are great, regardless of anything else. We try to avoid trends, or hype, or clout, and instead focus on working records that we just really love. We do that to this day, and will continue to do so - the industry may have changed and continues to, but we’ll still just be here releasing records that we care about, and hoping that other people care about them, too.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Obviously they’re soooo cool and soooo interesting and soooo smart and soooo funny!! But more seriously, I think our releases appeal to real fans of music who want to discover artists that maybe they haven’t heard of yet. Fans of the label are definitely openminded, and curious, and that’s something that we feel really proud of.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

Of course I have absolutely no favourites (how can you choose between your children?!), but a release that is particularly meaningful to me (Conor) personally is the debut EP from Shady Nasty, Bad Posture. From Sydney, Australia, they’re a super exciting, crazy innovative and experimental punk-adjacent trio and they were the first band that I personally signed to the label, so that one will always hold a special place in my heart, for sure. It’s basically completely out-of-print, though, but make sure you check it online. It really rips.

What is your stance on color vinyl?

I am so unbelievably down for anything that will get people interested in buying and owning physical media. As so many products and services move to subscription or streaming only models, it’s so important to connect with a physical piece of art that you actually own, that will never disappear off a cloud or be taken down once some other random billionaire media conglomerate gobbles it up. So, if you like colour vinyl, that’s sick and it makes sense - it’s pretty!!

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

Ack!!! The rising cost of vinyl is definitely less than ideal for literally everybody, but we’re always doing our best to keep our prices as low as possible in order to get physical media into the hands of as many people as want it. CDs continue to rock, as they always have and always will, and there’s just something special about being able to grab something at a merch table and stick it in your back pocket instead of having to carry around a 12” all night like a big dork (I have been this dork 10,000,000 times, and will be him 10,000,000 times more).

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Of course streaming has undeniably changed the industry, along with the rise of social media that continues to morph and change seemingly every week (or every day). There are a lot of things to complain about both of those things, for sure, but we’re also living in a world where people are really aching for a real connection to something, so I truly believe that both physical media and also genuine, real artists will prevail and continue to succeed and grow. They have to!!

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

Mental health is of course so important, and remains a key focus for the label in terms of providing a sustainable career for the artists we work with. So much so that we were the first label in the world to offer a Mental Health Fund for all our artists, and it’s something we continue to do to this day and are extremely proud of.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?

Just as a label that cared, that put out great records and that tried its best to make releasing music in a continuously hellish landscape as fun as it can be.

Royal Mountain Records is a Toronto-based record label rooted in a community-minded and artist-first ethos. Renowned for offering the support needed for artists to build sustainable careers - providing an uncommon level of support that extends to the company’s pioneering mental health initiative. Royal Mountain has emerged as a stronghold of formidable talent while working outside the confines of the traditional music industry.

TRICKY TRICKY

The legendary artist and producer Tricky today announces his new album, Different When It’s Silent, out 17 July 2026 via False Idols. Pre-order/save it here.

His 15th studio album and first full-length release under his own name in six years, Different When It’s Silent is a direct, focused record that reconnects with the distinctive sonic language that has defined Tricky’s work since his groundbreaking 1995 debut, Maxinquaye.

Following a premiere by Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6 Music, the album’s first single, “Out Of Place” arrives as a powerful closing moment for the record Featuring longtime collaborator Marta, the track pairs Marta’s restrained vocal with Tricky’s urgent, almost punk-like delivery The contrast between the two creates a dynamic finale that captures the album’s strippedback intensity Originally written for Marta’s own album, Tricky ultimately reclaimed “Out Of Place” for Different When It’s Silent

Different When It’s Silent follows a prolific period of activity Since 2020’s Fall to Pieces, Tricky has released music under several different guises, including the collaborative project Lonely Guest, the Fifteen Days project with producer Mike Theis under the name Theis Thaws, and last year’s joint record Out The Way with Marta, all via his own label, False Idols Yet returning to an album under his own name took on a different shape

“In my mind it was another side project” he explains But after hearing the material, his manager Alan McGee felt the songs clearly belonged to a Tricky record

Recorded between Tricky’s home in France and sessions in Bristol, the album draws strongly on the musical community that shaped him. Central to its sound is the voice of Bristol singer Mitch Sanders, whose soulful falsetto runs through much of the record. Their connection reflects a shared musical background and an instinctive chemistry that carries through the performances.

Across fourteen tracks, Tricky blends skeletal blues, brooding electronics, distorted guitars and stark hip-hop rhythms into a sound that feels both stripped-back and expansive. The album moves fluidly across styles while maintaining the restless experimentation that has defined his work for more than three decades

“I just love making music” Tricky says “I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to live this life and keep creating ”

With Different When It’s Silent, Tricky delivers one of the most focused and powerful records of his career - a reminder that artists who build their own language never fall out of time

HOT CHIP

Hot Chip’s 2004 debut Coming On Strong might have signaled their arrival, but The Warning felt to them like a fresh start. “It was an announcement to the world that the band had arrived,” says Al Doyle. “I think of it like a first album.” It spent 17 weeks on the UK charts and earned Hot Chip a Mercury Prize nomination, buoyed by the success of "Over and Over" and "Boy From School." The Warning was ahead of the zeitgeist – a snapshot of their time enamoured with the scene and sounds coming out of New York in the mid-2000s that would pave the way for countless indie-dance groups that followed. They were much more inspired by the London club underground than anything you’d read about in NME, blending UK garage, grime, choppy electro-funk or skeletal R&B with a techno pulse. These were ambitious genre blends, but they were also a statement of intent. “Making this record was definitely us trying to defy expectations and do something exciting,” says Joe Goddard.

Notably, the melding of Alexis Taylor’s British folk-inspired songwriting with Goddard’s more abrasive punk-funk and disco influences struck gold and became part of Hot Chip’s DNA. There is, perhaps, no better example than on "Boy From School." “The beginnings of the song were written very quickly in Joe’s brother’s bedroom,” says Taylor. “I went in there and did this kind of rough sketch of a song on the Casio keyboard. The melodies that Robert Wyatt sings in the high register, and holding down these sustained chords, were very much in my mind. But Joe had an idea that it could actually work well as an uptempo track.”

Hot Chip followed The Warning two years later with Made In The Dark. “We’d kicked the doors in and now we were at the party,” says Owen Clarke. Despite being originally signed to a major label, the band had an unprecedented level of autonomy. “We were excited by the idea of doing something strange and vibrant,” says Joe Goddard. “This record was a lot about freedom to experiment and make whatever kind of take on pop music that we wanted to make,” Alexis Taylor continues. They let their imaginations run ragged. “We weren’t afraid to veer from one thing to another in a space of one song,” adds Goddard. The standout "One Pure Thought" comes to mind, which Hot Chip had imagined as a Talking Heads track with the syncopated swing of UK funky, as well as "Shake A Fist," a calamitous dance track that sounds like a digital jungle.

While their previous efforts were effectively bedroom studio albums, Hot Chip wanted to capture the chemistry of their live show in the recording sessions. What’s more, they “wanted to prove that ‘Over and Over’ wasn’t an anomaly,” says Al Doyle, who by this point was balancing Hot Chip band life with being in LCD Soundsystem. “It was very important for us as a band: we can still do this.” They did: Made In the Dark was nominated for a Grammy. There’s even a knowing dig at James Murphy on the track ‘Wrestlers’, an “unashamed” attempt at an American R&B cut circa 1994. “We wrote that at the point that Al started playing with them,” says Goddard, “so it was a joke idea of fighting James Murphy for Al.” “He had texted me saying you can’t have him back, I’ll wrestle you for him,” says Taylor, so we wrote a song around it.

SELLING POINTS

By 2010, more changes were afoot. There’d been Hot Chip collaborations with legends like Peter Gabriel and Robert Wyatt, various solo albums and side projects, and, personally, settling down. They’d been touring the world for 10 years and reaching global audiences. As the decade drew to a close, Hot Chip began to take stock. Their songwriting had always been emotionally resonant but on their fourth studio album, it took on a newfound maturity, with themes of domesticity and devotion. The result was One Life Stand, Hot Chip’s most concise album to date: 10 songs that put melody front and center. It’s clearer and more direct, while outside collaborators infused the sessions with a new energy.

The band were working out of the east London studio that they started in 2008, which Goddard and Doyle still run to this day. They invited in drummer Charles Hayward, known for his experimental work with late-70s post-punk group This Heat, and Trinidadian steelpan master Fimber Bravo. On "I Feel Better," one of the album’s centrepieces, the collective joy is palpable. Reflecting their parallel careers as in-demand DJs too, Hot Chip struck up on the “epic, synthy songs” that would come to define the band, like "Flutes" and "Need You Now." “It was a breakthrough,” says Doyle.

At the same time, their dancefloor anthems took on a more profound tone against a starker political and social climate in the UK. “There was a sense between us,” says Doyle, “that it wouldn’t have seemed right to make straight-up party music. One Life Stand felt like the right kind of music to respond to the times and give out a sense of what’s important.”

LENNY KAYE GOIN’ LOCAL

LP / CD STREET DATE: JULY 17, 2026

Lenny Kaye has announced his debut solo record, ‘Goin’ Local’ out July 17 via Yep Roc Records At 79, the bonafide punk pioneer and “godfather of garage rock” (NPR Music) steps forward with a deeply personal collection written over the course of many years - piecing together a lifetime of experiences and expansive musical language to find his truest voice. “I feel like I’m a new artist,” says Kaye. “I think this album will surprise those who think they know me from what I’ve done previously.”

On Goin Local’, Kaye calls upon several longtime collaborators, including Patti Smith - who cowrote “Solstice” - continuing a half-century-long creative partnership behind some of their most iconic work, from “Free Money” and “Ghost Dance” to “Radio Ethiopia” and “Southern Cross.” Additional collaborators include jazz pianist Matthew Shipp, Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone, The Jayhawks’ John Jackson and multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield (Bob Dylan, T-Bone Burnett, Lucinda Williams).

On their fourth studio record, the band introduces an all-star line-up of new singers including Mariam Elhajli and Carolina Oliveros (of Combo Chimbita). Elhajli and Oliveros both tap into the raw energy of Celia and La Lupe, but turn the lens toward something more intimate: themes of loss, upheaval, and the weight of the immigrant experience.

Laura Cantrell · Humming By

Back in print to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cantrell's third album! Newly remastered and now with a previously unreleased bonus track. Humming by the Flowered Vine showcases the singer’s songwriting gifts and scholarly knowledge of old-school country. With the album's initial release, she sealed her reputation as country’s unofficial archive keeper, a woman devoted to preserving the roots of roots music

“Be it in her own songs or those of the past, in the hands of Cantrell every sinew of her genre seems to be writhing with life, its true magic evoked in a sensual way no history lesson could ever manage Cantrell opens country music up like a flower, and Humming by the Flowered Vine is a work of formidable and pristine beauty, emanating all of its flavour.” - Drowned In Sound

“With Humming by the Flowered Vine, Cantrell has proven she’s the rightful heiress to Lucinda Williams Like Williams, Cantrell writes beautifully stark songs that find the poetry in simple images, songs that reveal the profound revelations in everyday life. insert with full lyrics & credits

Mixed and mastered by Bill Stevenson (Descendents/ Black Flag) and recorded live in his Blasting Room studio, Take It Back, Take It On, Take It Over! packs 17 relentlessly efficient anthems into a lean, intense, 30-minute burst that reinvigorated the 7 Seconds crew while delivering a sonic punch to punk’s next generation.

Acclaimed as a “melodic thrash-fest” that found the band “as vital as ever” by AllMusic and earning 4.5/5 from Sputnikmusic, the record showcases the fearless honesty of frontman Kevin Seconds and the band’s unwavering ability to turn every chorus into an anthemic call to action. Moving beyond typical tropes, standout tracks like “Panic Attack” tackle personal anxiety and the reality of aging with rare transparency. From the breakneck opening of “All Came Undone” to the self-aware defiance of “Y.P.H. (Your Parent’s Hardcore),” Take It Back, Take It On, Take It Over! is essential 7 Seconds—raw, real, and a barbedwire bridge between the hardcore scene the band helped build and the 21st-century punk they inspired.

BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD

FOREVER HOWLONG - INDIE VARIANT BACK IN PRINT

Release Date: July 17th, 2026

Forever Howlong is Black Country, New Road’s first studio release since 2022's UK #3 album Ants From Up There, which gave the band their second Top 5 UK album in 12 months alongside their Mercury Prize shortlisted debut For the first time, and follows 2023's Live at Bush Hall, an album The Guardian claimed was a “magical resurgence” in a triumphant five-star review. Now, on studio album three, the band are once again building from the ground up in yet another miraculous musical transformation.

The long-awaited new record was produced by James Ford (Fontaines D.C.,Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Blur) and sees Black Country, New Road settled into a new shape in which vocal duties – and most of the song writing – is split between Tyler Hyde, Georgia Ellery, and May Kershaw. “It created a real through line for the album, having three girls singing," says Ellery. "It's definitely very different to Ants From Up There, because of the female perspective - and the music we've made also compliments that."

On April 28, the record labels and distribution teams at Secretly Group, Exceleration Music, Warp Records, Ninja Tune and Beggars Group have come together to announce a new partnership with Music Declares Emergency and the Music Climate Pact. Launching in tandem with World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, and dedicated to driving awareness around sustainability practices and transparency across both record stores and consumers, the inaugural campaign will feature a series of special edition album releases available at retail in the US, Canada and UK, as well as DTC, each pressed on 100% recycled vinyl material.

“Penguin Cafe continues to occupy a unique place in music: nothing else has ever sounded quite like it. Eccentric, charming, accommodating, surprising, seductive, warm, reliable, modest and unforgettable: it’s a true friend.” – Brian Eno

Erased Tapes are proud to re-issue The Red Book by Penguin Cafe, with an expanded vinyl track list which now includes the previously CD and digital only “And Yet…” plus two tracks from the limited-edition Umbrella EP. This new edition will be available on limited translucent vinyl and CD, both with updated art from Studio Torsten Posselt utilising the original drawing from renowned British sculptor and Simon Jeffes’ partner Emily Young.

Penguin Cafe was founded by Arthur Jeffes in 2009, bringing together a talented and disparate group of musicians initially to perform his father Simon Jeffes’ legacy of world-renowned Penguin Cafe Orchestra music, ten years after his untimely death in 1997. Following the release of A Matter of Life shortly after founding, The Red Book was released in 2014 to critical and fan acclaim.

“The name The Red Book comes from the book by Karl Jung of the same name. The book is about, among other things, the way our subconscious interacts with and intrudes into our daily lives. I thought this fitted what we were trying to achieve with the second album quite neatly namely, exploring musical worlds that are at once both familiar and strange. There is another meaning which is that the main mastered disc you end up with, the one from which all other copies will be made, is called the Red Book Master so somewhere at some point there will be a disc on which will be written “The Red Book Red Book Master.”

The tracks on the album all fall on some point along a scale going from gently Apollonian at the one end to perhaps a bit more Dionysian at the other. For our purposes this would be the ‘spacey’ end with tunes like 1420 and Aurora, and the ‘imaginary folk’ end with tracks like Odeon, Radio Bemba and Black Hibiscus. The tracks between these extremes are, perhaps with Silent Sun in particular, an attempt to blend these two parts.”

“IT'S

Jimmy Scott's distinct high register, contralto voice has been heard in David Lynch's Twin Peaks, and on the turntables of his fans Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Madonna and more. Recorded in 1990, and previously only available directly from Jimmy at his shows, this album finally gets its due! Newly remastered and featuring a booklet chock full of photos and liner notes!

For a while, Jimmy was everywhere: performing on the final episode of Twin Peaksʼ initial run, and at the wedding of superfans Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin; attending the GRAMMYs when another one of his albums, All the Way, was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Performance; singing at Bill Clintonʼs 1993 inaugural ball and on the soundtrack of huge 1994 film Philadelphia; appearing in the Ethan Hawke-directed Chelsea Walls alongside the likes of Uma Thurman and Kris Kristofferson, and in a video for Madonna, who described him as “the only singer who makes me cry.”

In Doesnʼt Love Mean More? You can hear why Jimmy evokes such strong emotion from listeners. Like a doting parent with a newborn infant, Scott cradles and caresses each note with emotional intention. Having learned bebop from the best as a young man, he was a master at subverting the tyranny of beats and bar lines, elongating or shortening his notes as his muse demanded. His phrasing was so advanced and exploratory that it could make others fearful, but every melody was under expert control.

Cosmic exploration. Spiritual transformation. Unbridled spontaneity. These are the guiding principles of Pigeon, a psychedelic five-piece rooted in the English seaside town of Margate, yet making music that transcends borders. Pigeon are Falle Nioke (vocals, percussion), Graham Godfrey (drums), Josh Ludow (bass), Steve Pringle (keys, synths) and Tom Dream (guitar), musicians whose combined credits include Little Simz, Michael Kiwanuka, SAULT and Saul Williams.

Their debut album, OUTTANATIONAL, is a thrilling collection of party songs without limits: think William Onyeabor in outer-space or early Hot Chip making motorik afrobeat in a 70s New York loft. Building on a string of acclaimed EPs that have been playlisted on 6Music and led to coveted live slots at UK festivals like Glastonbury, Pigeon have evolved out of Afro-disco territory into something moodier. It’s an expansive record laced with heady krautrock, post-punk and punkfunk, indebted to the power of the groove and questing to find the meaning of home. Pigeon must fly.

RICK FOWLER

His playing delivers direct, unfiltered emotion through strong phrasing, full-bodied vibrato, and a raw, blues-driven feel—refined over more than four decades on the road A seasoned journeyman, Fowler has built a deep catalog as both a bandleader and collaborator.

Beyond co-founding For tnox, Bombay, and Bad Fun, he has lent his talents to hundreds of recordings and shined at countless gigs, collaborating with everyone from eighties pop phenomenon Ber tie Higgins and blues legend Beverly “Guitar” Watkins to alternative rock royalty like Bill Berry of R.E.M. His credits include the score for the Sundance Film Festival award-winning documentary Dir ty Work and the collaborative release Deadwood Guitar Sessions

However, he speaks his mind and heart on his solo debut LP, Back On My Good Foot which stands as both a personal statement and a reflection of Fowler’s lifelong connection to the blues an immersive, lived-in work where every note carries weight, and every moment invites the listener deeper into its world.

The Architect – The Greatest Story Never Told

Stones Throw Records | STH2523LP

July 17th, 2026 | Hip-Hop | Instrumental

The Architect, one half of Homeliss Derilex, is a foundational figure in Hip-Hop whose early production work helped spark Stones Throw Records around when it was founded in 1996.

Three decades later, The Architect returns to where it all began. Sampling exclusively from Stones Throw’s vinyl catalog, he constructs an instrumental beat album that feels both archival and forward-looking. Overseen and curated by Peanut Butter Wolf, the project captures a rare full-circle moment.

The album weaves together sounds from across the Stones Throw universe, sampling a diverse range of artists including Sudan Archives, Mild High Club, Los Retros, John Carroll Kirby, Jerry Paper, Sofie Royer, Jonti, and more.

The Architect and Peanut Butter Wolf’s friendship dates back to the early ’90s in San Jose, and when Stones Throw was founded in 1996, The Architect helped helm the label’s first three singles.

The Architect has produced tracks for countless artists including Coolio, Tha God Fahim, Sleep Sinatra, and Criminal God. An industry veteran capable of bridging generational gaps. He is also the touring DJ for the legendary Souls of Mischief.

transient combines drums and electronics to paint a landscape that explores the sculptural qualities of beat-making, ambience, and movement. Sculpted with digital electronics, live improvisation, and studio manipulation, transient explores rhythm, timbre, texture, weight and pulse, and how they can sonify our emotional landscapes. Inspired by free jazz, noise, sounds from the natural environment, and artists that span from Robert Hood, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Arthur Russell, transient traverses a soundscape that goes from kinetic maximalism to delicate stillness, creating a listening experience that bends and warps time.

A restless soul with a wide-open heart, JOHNNY DELAWARE was born in South Dakota, but he spent his 20s on the road, drifting between Nashville, Albuquerque, and Austin before landing in Charleston, SC, where he recorded his 2013 debut, Secret Wave. The album earned glowing reviews, with the Charleston City Paper declaring Delaware their Songwriter of the Year, but before he could record a follow-up, another local project he helped cofound, Susto, began taking off. Over the course of the next decade, the band would become one of the most critically acclaimed names in indie roots music, garnering raves from Rolling Stone and SPIN and touring with the likes of The Lumineers, Band of Horses, and The Head and the Heart. In 2022, Delaware finally released his sophomore effort, Energy of Light, which he recorded after moving to Mexico City, and two years later, he followed it up with Para Llevar, which Glide Magazine hailed as “a swirl of indie rock, Americana and psychedelic folk.”

On his newest collection, On God’s Time, Delaware returns to the sounds he grew up on in South Dakota, crafting a lush, cinematic meditation on mortality and meaning that’s firmly rooted in the spiritual realm of the cosmic drifter. Produced by Delaware, the album reckons with death as a means of appreciating life, exploring love and loss and gratitude and regret through the eyes of a host of larger-than-life characters all navigating their way through a world of tragic beauty and infinite wonder.

'Obsessed With You [The Early Years]' is an official release of the early X-Ray Spex demo recordings which would evolve into the celebrated pioneering 'Germ Free Adolescents' album. Also includes early versions of classic Punk pioneering debut single tracks 'Oh Bondage, Up Yours!' and 'I Am A Cliché’.

Recorded in 1977, the majority of these recordings feature original saxophonist Lora Logic and capture the raw instinctive power of the band who seemed to arrive fully formed despite their youth. Josh da Costa – New Wave Graveyard

Stones Throw Records | STH2516LP

July 24th, 2026 | Indie & Alternative | New Wave

Josh da Costa makes his solo debut with New Wave Graveyard, an album which pays tribute to a spectrum of underground music and carves out a new niche.

Josh da Costa imagined his solo debut album New Wave Graveyard as a “greatest hits from a parallel universe, classic songs from an alternate reality.” He says, “Instead of trying to home in on one specific vibe or sound and capturing it over the course of, say, a month of my life, I chose to sort of chameleon my way through my own taste and record collection and try out different approaches to songwriting – as if I were more than just one artist.”

New Wave Graveyard might draw on the ‘70s and ‘80s genre that gives the album its name, but new wave is one of many of Josh da Costa’s musical inspirations – the album is a beautiful soup of styles and ideas, from glam to shoegaze, all informed by Josh’s eclectic taste. With witty lyrics and an abundance of catchy songs, New Wave Graveyard is a thrilling statement from an exciting new artist.

Josh da Costa is a veteran collaborator and touring musician, having played with Drugdealer, Jessica Pratt, MGMT, Chris Cohen and many more.

Album artwork by Robert Beatty (the iconic artist behind record covers for Tame Impala, The Weeknd, Mdou Moctar, Oneohtrix Point Never, and more); full colour insert with lyrics.

LP mastered by Heba Kadry (Björk, Panda Bear, Blood Orange) and vinyl mastering by Josh Bonati.

Touring plans include spring dates opening for Drugdealer, LA and East Coast headline shows, and UK / Europe tour dates in late spring 2026 into 2027.

GENE LOVES JEZEBEL

Discover (40th Anniversary Expanded Edition)

Newly remastered and expanded across 2 LPs with Glad To Be Alivelive recording pressed on vinyl for the first time since the original release

On July 24th, Beggars Banquet will release a 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition of Gene Loves Jezebel’s breakthrough album Discover.

The release is completed by Glad To Be Alive, a live recording from a show in Nottingham in 1986, pressed to vinyl here for the first time since its original release. Capturing the band in full flight, it offers a raw counterpoint to the studio record. Louder and unrestrained, demonstrating the energy that drove their rapid ascent during this period.

For this 40th anniversary edition, the original album has been remastered by Henry Rudkins at AIR Studios. It is presented on double black vinyl with updated artwork.

Originally released in 1986, Discover captures Gene Loves Jezebel at a watershed moment, propelling the band to an international audience. On Discover, their sound fully comes into focus, balancing the darker textures of their early work with a sharper, more melodic edge. Built around driving rhythms, chiming guitars and a more expansive sound, the album captured Gene Loves Jezebel hitting their stride with a sound that travelled further than before.

At its centre is “Desire (Come and Get It)”, the band’s most recognisable single. A track that distilled their songwriting into something both urgent and accessible, without losing the edge that defined their early work. Around it, the album moves between taut, rhythm-driven tracks and more expansive, grandiose moments.

“There’s no fiction as strange as America’s current Dantean hellscape and Creekbed Carter’s the kind of artist to help us navigate it.” — Devon Leger, Songlines Magazine

The world is ending, and rent is due. The empire is crumbling, and you’re late refilling your meds. War is ceaseless, pandemics go unchecked, billionaires poison the well water and cops abduct neighbors while wildfires burn… but here at the hot dog stand, relief and joy are yours for five buck ninety-nine.

This is PEASANTS REVOLT, the latest album from trans folksinger Creekbed Carter Hogan, out July 24 with Gar Hole Records. Playing the part of court jester in the halls of a dying empire, Hogan croons, hollers, and grins in the face of despair as we feast together on one last humble supper before everything falls apart.

A rollicking medieval-Americana manuscript, Hogan’s new work anchors itself in transitions. PEASANTS REVOLT was written living and moving between the North and the South; sung by a body both pre- and post-trans affirming healthcare; and recorded during a time of genocide, federal occupation, and workers’ uprisings. Decorating its margins are influences spanning time and medium. Here, 14th century king-killer ballads sit next to Appalachian strike songs. Labor and union songs find kinship with Ethiopian jazz records. Hogan’s work echoes with historical struggle, too, from the Haitian Revolution to the struggle for trans rights to the surreal futurism of Rio Grande Valley writer Fernando A. Flores. This album takes the entwinement of the personal and the political seriously, a path often walked by everyone from Hazel Dickens and John Prine to ANOHNI. The 10 tracks of PEASANTS REVOLT are themselves endlessly transitioning, hinging on mid-song shifts and building into wildfires that crackle and sputter with the courage of momentum and catchy hooks. By centering this work so deeply in the tumult of change, Hogan illuminates all of capitalism’s attempts to isolate us — and the power that we regain when we refuse to face our lives and our selves alone.

THANATOSIS PRODUKTION

Brisk is the debut album by Polish-Hungarian flutist and saxophonist Juli Deák (*2000), a Budapest-based musician whose work moves fluidly between classical, contemporary, jazz, and experimental music. Drawing on over 15 years of musical experience, Deák’s sound is grounded in classical precision while remaining open to improvisation, folk influences, and extended techniques

CREDITS.

Juli Deák, flute.

All tracks composed and performed by Juli Deák.

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Ádám Gyöngyösi. Recorded in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Budapest on April 14, 2025 (tracks 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7) and on January 2, 2026 (tracks 2 and 4).

Photo by Carl Curman (Tekniska Museet).

Cover artwork by Michell Zethson, finalised by Pål Olofsson.

Executive production by Alex Zethson.

Made with support from the Swedish Arts Council.

The album presents seven solo flute pieces that form a concise portrait of Deák’s artistic thinking. The project began in 2021, when she started shifting away from the refined, seemingly flawless ideals of classical performance toward a more personal and physical musical language. Early ideas only revealed their potential in live performance, where the direct encounter with listeners encouraged her to deepen and refine the material. Brisk emerged from this process as a snapshot of an evolving practice rather than a fixed statement.

Breathing stands at the center of the album. More than a technical necessity, it becomes both material and structure. Through close microphone placement, breath sounds feel intimate and immediate, placing the listener near the performer. Techniques such as circular breathing, overblowing, harmonics, singing while playing, and wind tones allow the flute to split into multiple voices, while the rhythmic clicking of keys provides an underlying pulse.

Deák deliberately foregrounds sounds often suppressed in classical contexts breathy tones, unstable pitches, squeaks, and audible inhalations treating them as expressive and human rather than imperfect. This focus reflects her long-term research into the physical and expressive limits of the flute and connects to her ongoing solo practice, The Breathing Project, of which Brisk is a distilled release.

Alongside her solo work, Deák has collaborated with ensembles including Konstmusik-systrar, KammarensembleN JazzaJ, and the VENI ensemble, and performed at festivals such as Norbergfestival, Ung Nordisk Musik, Vill Vill Vest, and MENT Ljubljana. Across Brisk, classical discipline meets bodily presence, revealing a voice that values honesty, curiosity, and attentive listening.

Daptone Gold is a collection of hits and obscurities, album favorites and unheard exclusives from the Daptone Records catalog. Since first rearing itʼs head in 2001, Daptone has upheld itʼs reputation as both a premier source for new raw soulful music and a model for the possibilities of independent music today. With a library of albums and 45ʼs spanning from rhythm and blues to afrobeat, gospel to funk, Daptone has established a sound that is consistently sincere, heavy, and soulful.

After much heated debate, Daptone has selected and sequenced the tracks that were chosen to represent both the depth and breadth of the Daptone sound. It features some of the most popular songs such as Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kingsʼ “Tell Me” and the Budos Bandʼs “Up From the South”, alongside some deeper selections such as Lee Fieldsʼ “Could Have Been” and Charles Bradleyʼs “The World (Is Going Up In Flames)” which have previously only been released as 45 rpm singles. With the inclusion of unreleased tracks such as Binky Griptiteʼs “A Lover Like Me” and Sharon Jonesʼ version of Gladys Knightsʼ “Giving Up”, Daptone Gold promises to be a special addition to the collection of Daptone die-hard fans, as well as a perfect introduction to the label for those who have not yet been experienced. As always, Daptone has made sure that the entire presentation is of a quality and design consistent with the music it contains: decadent gold foil packaging with the Daptone logo prominently embossed across the front, incentives for the vinyl fans, and extensive liner notes.
