This Issue: Stuart Baker at Soul Jazz Records

How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I left college and was bored and didn’t know what to do. I had never been to the USA and wanted to go, and I wanted a way to hear lots of records that I could not afford. I found out you could be a courier for airline companies which meant cheap flights so off I went. We stayed in youth hostels and visited as many record shops in the USA as is humanly possible.
I shipped 1,000 jazz and soul records back to the UK and opened a small shop to sell them. I repeated this process multiple times each year (to the present day). Aside from visiting record stores we would sometimes knock on the doors of long-defunct record labels in the USA in case they were still there. One was Tribe Records in Detroit –it was the home of Wendell Harrison, founder of Tribe Records, and his wife Pamela. Another was Bob Crawford who owned a label that had released an album Eddie Russ – “Fresh Out.” Aside from selling me some records, he asked me if I wanted to buy the rights. With little knowledge but much enthusiasm I said ‘yes ok’. A distributor found out we were releasing it and offered to buy 2,000 if I gave it to them exclusively. I said ‘ok, if you pay me upfront’. So that was how I got the money to release our first record!
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
Yes, I was in a few bands in Newcastle in the north of England. One was the Arty-Farty Party Band, another was the Earth, Wind and Fire Extinguishers. (Truth be told they were pretty much the same group of people). We mainly played covers of funky stuff like James Brown, Kool and The Gang). And no we never made any records.
When and where did the label begin?
1992, London – the first release was the aforementioned Eddie Russ – “Fresh Out” album (which originally came out in the US in 1974). Shortly afterwards we began releasing new music from a number of customers who came in our shop; Jessica Lauren, Moving In The Right Direction, Esperanto. This became the identity of Soul Jazz Records – a mixture of releasing music from different eras and places and occasionally releasing new music alongside.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
We have in fact created a number of sub-labels over the years: Satellite Records (which released indie and experimental rock such as Add N to X, Scott 4), Universal Sound (which released specialist solo artists such as ESG, Jackie Mittoo, Doug Carn) and World Audio Foundation (which released the sacred and spiritual music such as Georgian and Haitian recordings).
How has the label changed since it started?
It now has a catalogue of 600 releases rather than one!
What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?
Hmm well we still sold records (I can’t really remember how we did this because all the shops were shut!). Then after the pandemic, about a squillion labels wanted to use the diminishing number of pressing plants around the world so manufacturing times went crazy. At the moment everything is great.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?
I live above Soul Jazz Records. Below Soul Jazz Records is a record store – Sounds of the Universe. I hear a lot of new music! My favourite new artists are the ones we currently work with – Trees Speak (from Tucsan, Arizona) and Brown Spirits (From Melbourne, Australia).
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
Oooh, no! OK: Nu Yorica, New Orleans Funk, New York Noise, Punk 45, Deutsche Elektronische, 100% Dynamite series, Can You Dig It? Black Action Films, Bossa Nova, Studio One, Tropicalia, Cuba: Music and Revolution, Brazil 70, Universal Sounds of America, The World of Arthur Russell, Soul of A Nation. Whoops, that’s more than one.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? Yes, I quite like coloured vinyl. My favourites are from my childhood - A record that came with a horse racing board game. Depending on how the needle lands, that record announces a different winner of the race. We used this idea for a ‘3 sided record’ once. Two concentric grooves mean that you get a different song played depending on how the needle drops.
How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?
I collect records – many of them are at least 50 years old and many of these still have the original shrinkwrap on them and will be on the earth a good deal longer than the packaging of a ready-meal from a supermarket.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered? Being flip I’d say I don’t care. But really .. hmm bit like Picasso’s artworks. (Is that pushing it a bit?)

A legendary artist at a legendary location: Tripping with Nils Frahm captures one of the world’s most sought-after live acts performing at one of Berlin’s most iconic buildings.
When Nils Frahm kicked off his world tour at Funkhaus Berlin in January 2018 to bring his highly acclaimed studio album All Melody to the stage, an ambitious journey was just to begin: Over the next two years, Frahm played more than 180 sold-out performances, including the Sydney Opera House, LA’s Disney Hall, the Barbican in London, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, and several big festival stages around the globe. Yet the stunning setting of Funkhaus Berlin, renowned for its vintage grandeur and outstanding acoustics, and also home to Frahm’s magnificent studio where All Melody was recorded, had occupied a unique place in the artist's heart.
In December 2018, Nils Frahm eventually returned to Funkhaus Berlin to host another set of four shows, tickets sold out within hours. Frahm’s friend and film director Benoit Toulemonde a collaborator since 2011 captured the concerts on film, only using handheld cameras, and employing techniques he had mastered for the famous concert series La Blogotèque, which featured some of the world’s most popular artists.
Tripping with Nils Frahm is an illustration of Nils’s lauded ability as a composer and passionate live artist as well as the enchanting atmosphere of his captivating, and already legendary Funkhaus shows: An extraordinary musical trip – rare and exclusive, close and intimate, bringing a unique concert experience to the screen.
"It was about time to document my concerts in picture and sound, trying to freeze a moment of this period where my team and I were nomads, using any method of travel to play yet another show the next day. Maybe tonight is the night where everything works out perfectly and things fall into place? Normally things go wrong with concerts, but by combining our favorite moments of four performances, we were able to achieve what I was trying to do in these two years of touring: getting it right!
When you hear the applause on the end of the film you should know that I was smiling happily, being a tad proud and feeling blessed to share these moments with you.
Much love, Nils"

BLARF – Film
Scores For Films That Don’t Exisit
Stones Throw Records | STH2514
May 1st 2026 | Gatefold LP | Classical

BLARF is comedian and actor Eric André’s musical project. Most people know Eric as an actor (Bad Trip, Happy Gilmore 2, and The Righteous Gemstones), and for his surreal, boundary-pushing comedy career, with an eponymous Emmy Award-winning show on Adult Swim and standup shows toured around the world. But few know Eric André as a bona fide musician who attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music, where he specialized in standing bass
BLARF brings his disruptive energy to a new body of work that is both an extended comedic bit and entirely, unironically serious: Film Scores For Films That Don’t Exist. Inspired by composers like Ennio Morricone and Vangelis, whose signature sound is as iconic as the films they soundtracked, Eric enlisted a full orchestra to bring his compositions to life, recording in Los Angeles and Budapest.
Executive and record produced by Prateek Rajagopal, a composer for film and TV whose credits include The Mandalorian.
Director Lance Bangs, known for his work on Jackass and Portlandia, documented the entire recording process.
Several listening events are planned, plus a live orchestral performance with Eric conducting at The Colburn School’s Zipper Hall in Los Angeles on April 27th, 2026.

POMPEII // UTILITY unites two kindred spirit rappers from opposite coasts within SURF GANG’s world-building genius. Structured as a true double album MIKE on one side, Earl on the other POMPEII // UTILITY unfolds through a rotating cast of side quests and characters from within its shared creative ecosystem. Jadasea, Anysia Kym, Niontay, Na-Kel Smith, and Lerado Khalil all make appearances, passing through the album’s vast terrain, while behind the scenes, SURF GANG producers Harrison, EvilGiane, Elipropperr, and Flea Diamonds (with input from additional producers) wield the gritty, raspy, animated beats that build its container. SURF GANG's previous production credits include Baby Keem, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky & Playboi Carti.
Arriving on the heels of 2025 albums from both rappers MIKE’s Showbiz! and Earl’s Live, Laugh, Love POMPEII // UTILITY plays like a victory lap that traces their friendship back over more than a decade. Where two rappers going head-to-head might otherwise incite rivalry or comparison, POMPEII // UTILITY offers something rooted and communal a shared understanding of care, joy, grief, process, and responsibility to something larger than yourself. A joint release via all three artists’ respective labels: 10k, Tan Cressida and Surf Gang Records

New Zealand based musician and songwriter Aldous Harding’s fifth album, Train on the Island, arrives on May 8. The 10-track record was co-produced with long-time collaborator John Parish (PJ Harvey, Dry Cleaning, Sparklehorse) at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales, where the pair recorded Harding’s previous albums Party (2017), Designer (2019) and Warm Chris (2022). Musical contributions to the new recordings come from pedal steel player Joe Harvey-Whyte; harpist Mali Llywelyn; synth artist Thomas Poli; drummer Sebastian Rochford (Polar Bear); and Huw Evans (H. HIS NAME IS ALIVE
Livonia | Home Is In Your Head | Mouth By Mouth
The First Three His Name Is Alive Albums
Repressed On Black Vinyl

Released on May 8th
A storied part of the early 4AD catalog, His Name Is Alive — the creative outlet of Michigan musician Warren Defever — was signed to the label in 1989, after label founder Ivo Watts-Russell fell in love with their dark and fragmented sonic inclinations. While His Name Is Alive’s sound was in line with the gothic echoes of labelmates Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, they also had a different, nonpareil quality, something existing on the boundary of this earth and another realm further underground.
The band’s first three records on 4AD (Livonia, Home Is In Your Head, and Mouth By Mouth) are being made available on black vinyl and CD. Recently reissued in 2024 as part of a quickly sold-out colored vinyl boxset, the audio was sourced from the original analogue tapes and painstakingly remastered by Defever himself.

His Name Is Alive’s 1990 4AD label debut Livonia cemented the band’s presence among 4AD’s well-established ethereal lineage, reinventing and refracting the label’s sound through a prism. A tender and slightly deranged dream-pop record, it packages nearly ten years of Defever’s home recordings — brought to haunting chorus via the spectral, feminine vocals of Karin Oliver. Produced / mixed by Ivo Watts-Russell and This This Mortal Coil collaborator John Fryer, the record is a powerful opening statement, inviting intrigue via noisy refrains and textural guitar. It examines the dual themes of love and loss, woozily delivered as if dreamlike.

Home Is In Your Head
Home Is In Your Head contains 23 songs quick-firing through emotions, with moments of soothing calm soon clashing with white noise and visceral chaos. A varied yet grounded compilation of new material and old (some dating back to Defever’s junior high days), it found the band entering a confident creative stride, leaving listeners enthralled by both its beauty and darkness and proving Defever’s inspired productions utterly unique.
“Late at night I would listen to the mixes very quietly, allowing the ticking of my alarm clock to mingle with the sound of the clock sampled on the record, it’s such an unpredictable, fluid journey.”

Mouth By Mouth
His Name Is Alive’s final record on 4AD, Mouth By Mouth was the first where the band controlled all processes including mixing, saw a marked shift; their most diverse, yet accessible catalog entry. The project’s soaring growth over time allowed Defever to employ an extraordinarily adventurous approach to the record’s sound and vision, indulging his love for all kinds of music, be it tastes of looped dub, sugar-sweet 1960s pop, distortion-laden dream-gaze, evocative alt-noise or strummy folk. Embracing the surreal and turning their experimentalism up a notch and with Defever’s studio skills truly blossoming, many see this as a high point for the band.

• DOUBLE LP, GATEFOLD JACKET, INNER SLEEVES WITH LYRICS
Linda Perry’s “Let It Die Here” is a raw, spiritual reckoning, a journey through inherited pain, grief, and redemption. Across seventeen tracks that blend confessional poetry, cinematic rock, and vulnerable introspection, Perry confronts the ghosts of her past — mothers, lovers, and the darker corners of self.
The record moves from the streetlight confessions of “Balboa Park” to the searing surrender of “Let It Die Here,” culminating in “Albatross,” a release from the weight she has carried her whole life. It is an album about release, letting go of guilt, embracing imperfection, and finding beauty in survival.

Even the most dedicated crate-digger might go their whole life without stumbling across any of the three LPs Antoine Dougbé released in the late 1970s and early ’80s. Yet he is remembered with a mixture of admiration and fear; for Antoine Dougbé was not merely one of the most inventive songwriters to emerge from the fertile music scene of Cotonou, but also a powerful Vodún initiate whose close connection to the spirit world allowed him to refer to himself as “the Devil’s prime minister.”
Whether driven by the thrill of the music or by fear of crossing the Devil’s prime minister, Dougbé’s records all feature Orchestre Poly-Rythmo playing at the absolute height of their considerable powers. But Dougbé was unique in the sense he neither sang nor performed any of the main instrumental parts. It has been suggested that his involvement with Vodún prohibited him from using his voice for anything as frivolous as a popular song. Instead he provided his songs to Melome Clément, who arranged them for the band; most of the vocals were handled by Lohento Eskill and Amoussou William.
Despite a moderate early success, Dougbé never quite found the audience he deserved, and by the early eighties he had vanished from the music scene. Analog Africa now brings his small but extraordinary body of work to a wider audience with a double LP compilation featuring 12 songs, a mixture of Cuban son, rumba and traditional rhythms of Benin.

From the cover art to the lyrics, death metal legends Deicide didn’t give an inch when it came to their uncompromising antichurch stance on their 1995 release Once Upon the Cross. In fact, the album included samples from the film The Last Temptation of Christ, which was itself accused of blasphemy. But the band was hardly standing still, as the gobsmacking guitar pyrotechnics of Eric and Brian Hoffman and furious fusillades of bassist/vocalist Glen Benton and drummer Steve Asheim became ever more awe-inspiring and, dare we say it, miraculous. For its first widespread U.S. vinyl release, we are giving Once Upon the Cross a milky clear with blood splatter pressing remastered for the format, complete with printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics.

Orange with black swirl pressing!

MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD: Friday Afternoon in the Universe
Magenta Vinyl Edition
STREET DATE: MAY 8, 2026

Its title taken from the first line of “Old Angel Midnight” by Jack Kerouac (himself a legendary improviser), 1995’s Friday Afternoon in the Universe flings a whole lot at the wall and just about everything sticks, with mid-‘70s Miles Davis the predominant hue in an ever-changing sonic palette. “Chubb Sub” is a favorite, and was used prominently in the Get Shorty soundtrack, but even the most abstract numbers groove and move. First time on colored vinyl, and a snazzy magenta pressing at that!

MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD: Shack-Man
Though the trio of John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood had already expanded the jazz genre with their first three records (two of which we have reissued here at Real Gone Music), it was this 1996 album that really crossed over and won the ensemble a whole new legion of listeners in the “jam band” camp. Recorded in a remote, solar-powered plywood shack in Hawaii (hence the title), Shack-Man brought the ‘70s soul-jazz beloved by the band firmly into the ‘90s, propelled by Medeski’s simultaneously nostalgic yet forward-thinking excursions on the Hammond B-3. A masterpiece of groove, out on colored vinyl for the first time for its 30th anniversary in a fluorescent green pressing to match the vibrant album cover! STREET DATE: MAY 8, 2026

We could expound upon the history of this 1969 release on the Bethlehem label, but perhaps it’s best to let the producer of the album do it. You might have heard of him—THE GODFATHER OF SOUL, JAMES BROWN! Here are his words from the back cover: “Between my concerts, one-nighters, and working with people in the poverty and ‘Stay in School’ programs, I find time to fly into Cincinnati to record — and for three years now everybody’s been hippin me to dig the Dee Felice Trio. Last fall my production manager Bud Hobgood put me in a car, between sessions and between sessions we ended up at the Living Room Supper Club where the Trio was playing. After listening to the first set, I knew I had to record an album of standards with this trio backing me up, and I wasted no time in signing them to a contract — on the spot.”

So not only did the Dee Felice Trio back James Brown on his 1969 King release Gettin’ Down to It, but also the Godfather turned around and produced the Trio’s In Heat for Bethlehem. We will once again cede the floor to Mr. Brown: “The music in this album is a ‘mixed bag,’ whether your ‘Stroke’ is Soul, Rock, Blues, Folk or Bossa Nova —it’s here to hear AND ALL WITH AN UNDERLYING Jazz Beat.” We’ve remastered In Heat for this reissue—like James says, “Just put the record on the box, turn up volume and Dig, Baby Dig.”

OVERVIEW
What if 40 minutes of instrumental music made by two friends passing files across state lines could capture the range of human experience, or at least a disproportionate chunk of it—worry and camaraderie, hope and frustration, tenderness and absurdity? That is the question that steadily emerges across the nine tracks of the self-titled debut from Croz Boyce, the duo of two musicians who have made some of the last quarter-century’s most inquisitive music, Dave Portner (Avey Tare) and Brian Weitz (Geologist) of Animal Collective. Buds and collaborators for so long that it seems they can have deep exchanges without a word or, in this case, a shared physical space, Dave and Brian cry and hug and crack up (good) and crack up (bad) as a pair here. A record of sweet or fretful acoustic strums and electronics that give every scene color and depth, Croz Boyce feels like a celebration of friendship, of the chance to share a lifetime together even if from a distance.
Five years ago, Animal Collective released a track called “Brown Thrasher,” part of a massive charitable compendium called For the Birds. It was a curious little drift, single acoustic notes acting like opened windows for rays of electronic sunshine. To divulge a little liner notes data, that was just Dave and Brian, working through their mutual adoration for a springtime idyll. The two liked the partnership, and, as the rest of their main quartet was busy with other projects, decided to keep going. Starting in early 2023, and almost without exception, Dave would write a guitar theme in his Blue Ridge redoubt and send it to Brian in the heart of D.C. He’d react to each instrumental and send it back. Aside from a shared mixing session in rural North Carolina and another in Baltimore with Animal Collective’s Josh Dibb (Deakin), that’s how easily Croz Boyce came together—two longtime pals, passing the time by making music together.
Back before Animal Collective was really called Animal Collective, the goal was for that loose confederation of close friends to make music together as time and personnel and circumstance allowed. Like jazz musicians showing up for sessions, they’d slap the name of whoever played on the cover. Branding needs intervened, and, well, we have been blessed with approximately a quarter-century of Animal Collective. But the idea remains, as every member of that band has always moved as a perpetual free agent. Geologist and Avey Tare were going to call this music just that, Geologist and Avey Tare, but they began this project around the time that David Crosby died. A Dropbox folder named “Croz Boys” mutated into the handle Croz Boyce—not a tribute to the Croz’s music at all but maybe an unintentional tribute to the idea that there are lots of worse ways to pass your life than making music with buds. Though, that could all be wrong.

Abigail Lapell Shadow Child

Every mother has a unique story. One thing is true for every mother, though: There’s no deadline quite like a pregnancy.
Award-winning Toronto singer-songwriter Abigail Lapell was pregnant with her first child when she booked studio time on Vancouver Island to make an album about motherhood. The nine songs on Shadow Child one for each month of gestation had to be ready before then, and her return flight was booked on the last day she could safely fly in her third trimester.
Working with producer Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, Black Mountain), Lapell finished her songs in the studio and on rural walks beside the Pacific Ocean. She enlisted some of her favourite singers, all British Columbians, all mothers: Frazey Ford, Jill Barber, Pharis Romero. “They’re all people with unique, distinctive voices,” she says, “which is what I’m drawn to.”
Musically, Lapell was looking for a stark, acoustic sound, as opposed to 2024’s Juno Award-nominated Anniversary (recorded in Niagara with Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker) and 2022’s acclaimed Stolen Time (recorded in Montreal with Howard Bilerman, featuring E Street Band saxophonist Jake Clemons).
Lapell’s road to motherhood was fraught, involving years of IVF and a 2023 miscarriage that she experienced on stage while on tour. (She finished her set.) Her son was born in November 2024. The song cycle of Shadow Child covers joy and loss, using metaphors from Maritime tragedy, reproductive health, and lives altered by the arrival of a newborn. The title track refers to ultrasound imaging of “a liminal person that doesn’t quite exist yet,” says Lapell. “Their status is ontologically blurry.”

Shadow Child arrives May 8 – just in time for Abigail's second Mother’s Day.

THE LIMOUSINES GET SHARP

The Bay Area’s electro-pop underground gets a neon-lit revival with a limited repress of The Limousines’ cult-classic 2010 debut album, Get Sharp, on frosted pink vinyl.
The album features the single “Internet Killed the Video Star,” a blog-era anthem with an instantly recognizable synth line and a self-aware chorus that captured the anxieties and possibilities of the digital age. Heavy rotation at alternative radio juggernaut Live 105 helped transform the song into a regional hit and an indie-dance mainstay.
“Very Busy People” is a high-energy critique of hyper-productivity and modern ambition, personifying a band that synthesized sharp songwriting, glossy synth hooks, and cultural commentary. Together, these elements mark a moment when Bay Area forces aligned to launch a record that continues to resonate.

ElderIsland ElderIsland Hello Baby Okay Hello Baby Okay
When Elder Island went into the studio to record the followup to their critically acclaimed 2021 album, Swimming Static, they were determined to “turn everything on its head”. The trio are celebrated for their brooding indie-electronica that draws on their Bristol roots, creating vastly detailed and immersive soundscapes. But Hello Baby Okay marks a new era for the band, fuelled by a longing for transcendence and euphoria An effervescent counterpoint to the current times, their new music is threaded through with a liberated energy, lilting funk-pop guitars, danceable beats and a renewed sense of play. “We wanted the joy to shine through,” they say.
Elder Island’s Katy Sargent (vocals, cello), Luke Thornton (bass, beat-making) and David Havard (guitar, synths, programming) have spent the past decade building a dedicated fanbase on both sides of the Atlantic, with over 400 million streams worldwide They’re firm festival favourites who’ve played at prestigious venues from London’s Roundhouse to New York’s Bowery Ballroom and who hold the unique ability to straddle both the live and club worlds: in 2022, they pricked the ears of superstar DJs like Solomun, who personally invited them to spin at his Printworks takeover
While Swimming Static was densely constructed, with instrumentation meticulously layered in the editing suite, its followup was a totally different process where “we did the complete opposite,” says Katy When they went into the studio in 2023, they went back to their roots with free-flowing jam sessions, rekindling their sense of spontaneity while channeling the warm embrace of the dancefloor. “Our sound got pigeonholed into a chillout coffee-shop playlist space,” says Luke, but in fact, David continues, “DJ culture has been heavily influential on our approach to music.”

THE YAWPERS
AMERICAN MAN / HUMAN QUESTION

THE YAWPERS PLANTED THEIR FLAG AT THE INTERSECTION OF THE DELTA, THE DIVE BAR, AND THE MOSH PIT. AND WE’RE PROUD TO DRAG TWO OF THEIR MOST FERAL ALBUMS BACK TO THE TURNTABLE.
American Man, produced by Cracker’s Johnny Hickman, is “part blues, part rock, part folk, all slathered with early 80s punk attitude” and “a success on every level” according to the geniuses at American Songwriter. We’re not arguing and you have no right to, either. This one’s earned our esteemed Barrel Select designation, pressed on Bloodshot-Red vinyl.
Four years later, the band moved to Chicago’s Electrical Audio to record Human Question live to tape with producer Alex Hall. The result was a record Americana UK called a “shambolic rock and roll” masterpiece, earning a 10/10 for its refusal to polish its own edges. While American Man was a “frantic folk stomp,” Human Question shifted into what Punk Rock Theory dubbed “pedal-punk,” a noisy cocktail of psychobilly and gospel.
These records aren’t just artifacts of a specific scene; they are honed to a shiv point, designed to cut through the noise of an oversaturated market. Restored and remastered with original posters dropped in for good measure, these are loud, lean, and necessary.

FIVE EIGHT HELP A SINNER
Athens, Georgia’s legendary Five Eight is back with their new studio album “Help a Sinner”. Known for raw, emotional intensity and a live show that’s nothing short of a spiritual experience, the band returns this May with a brand-new album.
Produced by the legendary David Barbe (Drive-By Truckers, Sugar), the new record delivers that signature high-energy Athens sound their fans crave. Blending fierce post-punk energy with anthemic melodies, Five Eight proves they are still the beating heart of the Southern indie scene.

JOHNNY’S UNCALLED FOUR
Johnny's Uncalled Four return with two previously unreleased sides from the vault of legendary mastering engineer and maestro, John Golden. Recorded in John's attic studio in 1964, "Hold Me" (originally a pop hit for PJ Proby), gets a frantic, uptempo facelift. With its stomping beat and blistering guitar solo, the track will appeal to folks who fancy the sounds coming out of the Pacific Northwest at that time: The Wailers, Sonics,et al. On the flip side, featuring John Herron on lead guitar, Johnny's Uncalled Four serves up a haunting helping of instrumental magic, via the eerie, Chet Atkins deep-cut, "Windy and Warm." A must listen for fans of Pete Drake, Santo & Johnny and the like.

lucky break – made it!
Nurtured on 90s alternative indie, lucky break’s music melds the emotional directness of Fiona Apple, the wide-eyed warmth of Bedouine and the Americanaleaning alt rock of Lucinda Williams. Fans of Alvvays, Hole, Phoebe Bridgers and The Breeders will find familiar touchstones here.
lucky break is a hand-drawn cartoon character and a girl with a guitar, an everexpanding container for the feelings that come with making art. She can be very sad and very joyful, living somewhere between worlds. On her debut for Fire Records, made it!, lucky break builds a new world for her character to inhabit.
made it! collects songs written between the ages of 19 and 23, documenting the uncertainty of early adulthood, the end of a first major relationship and the process of learning to stand up for yourself. Tracks like “Crush” pair sharp lyrical insight with big drums and crisp bass, while “Head Down” uses bright, dreamy guitars to explore themes of politics, consumer culture and moral complacency.
Confessional, direct and emotionally precise, lucky break’s songwriting is matched by a versatile and expressive vocal performance that shifts across moods and styles throughout the record. Produced with Elliott Woodbridge in Burbank, made it! is a playful, self-assured debut from a young artist who has already found her voice and is stepping confidently into a bright future.

EILEEN ROSE – Insanitia – Cat. NSR01022026 – EAN 7393210307186 – Street Date: May 8, 2026
Insanitia is a play on words, like walking a tightrope through the madness of this time we live in, that becomes a bridge between America and Italy.
Eileen Rose is a legacy artist who has been honing her craft for a long time. Her career path began in London with several acclaimed releases on the legendary Rough Trade label, then continued through her hometown of Boston, leading to a decade of success in Music City, Nashville TN. There, her classic, folk-rock, songwriting picked up colors of country and soul, pure elements that are the essence of what we call today "americana".
Eileen Rose searched for her roots, right to the bone by recording her latest album, Insanitia, in the land that her father left as a child to migrate to America: Italy.
Eileen has created a rare, transoceanic album which boasts an incredible roster of extraordinary musicians. This shining list includes her lifelong companion, The Legendary Rich Gilbert on guitars and pedal steel (Uncle Tupelo, Steve Wynn, Wanda Jackson), Texan heroes Joel Guzman and Carrie
Rodriguez, Bob Dylan collaborators Charlie McCoy and Scarlet Rivera, and even a duet with beloved Tuscan singersongwriter and actor Bobo Rondelli. Insanitia alternates between Eileen’s original songs and deft interpretations of classics by the likes of John Prine, Los Lobos and Ivan Graziani. One standout track is Eileen’s interpretation of the 60’s hit, "Ma Che Freddo Fa" by Italian siren Nada, which becomes an infectiously cool power surf straight out of a Tarantino flick. In typical Eileen Rose style, the album is an eclectic mix of pure, rocking fun, alongside deep-water, gut-punching songs that dive straight to the head and heart, grip tight and won’t let go. With this stunning new record, Eileen and her group of masterful musicians, have created a beautiful, romantic bridge of memories and friendship between America and her beloved Italia that will surely capture hearts on both sides of the ocean.
The album is produced by Eileen Rose herself, along with Rich Gilbert, and the extraordinary Italian singer-songwriter and cultural maverick, Andrea Parodi.

TORO Y MOI ANYTHING IN RETURN
Since his first offerings began making the Internet rounds in 2009, Toro y Moi has proven himself to be not just a prolific musician, but a diverse one as well, letting each successive release broaden the scope of his oeuvre. Amassing nearly 150,000 copies sold, Toro y Moi’s third full-length album, Anything in Return, sees Chaz Bear blending funk, psych-pop and colorful, glitchy electronic sampling, locking in his unique sound that would push him to the forefront of alternative and chillwave music in the 2010s. To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, Anything in Return will be released for the first time on picture disc — hitting record stores and the Carpark Records shop on April 14th, 2023
But the product of a move he made almost a decade ago, from South Carolina to Berkeley, CA and the subsequent extended separation from loved ones, is what put Anything in Return right in the middle of the producer/songwriter dichotomy that his first two albums established. There’s a pervasive sense of peace with Bundick’s tendency to dabble in both sides of the modern music-making spectrum, and he sounds comfortable engaging in intuitive pop production and putting forth the impression of unmediated id. The producer’s hand is prominent — not least in the sampled “yeah”s and “uh”s that give the album a hip-hop-indebted confidence — and many of the songs feature the 4/4 beats and deftly employed effects usually associated with house music. Tracks like “High Living” and “Day One” show a considerably Californian influence, their languid funk redolent of a West Coast temperament, and elsewhere — not least on lead single, “So Many Details” — the record plays with darker atmospheres than we’re used to hearing from Toro y Moi. Sounding quite assured in what some may call this songwriter’s return to producerhood, Anything in Return is Bear uninhibited by issues of genre, an album that feels like the artist’s essence.
Since his earlier releases, Toro y Moi has continued to make big waves across the music landscape — headlining international tours in the US, Europe, and Asia, producing tracks for major artists like SZA, performing on national television shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Ellen Show, joining festival lineups like Coachella and Fuji Rock, and much more.

SIKYIHIGHLIFE
Strut proudly presents the first-ever reissue of a landmark 1974 Ghanaian highlife classic Sikyi Highlife by Dr K Gyasi & His Noble Kings, originally released on Essiebons
A defining recording of the era, Sikyi Highlife bridges tradition and innovation at a pivotal moment in Ghanaian music. Deeply rooted in the classic 1950s–’60s highlife sound, K. Gyasi drew inspiration from the ancient sikyi drum-dance of the Akan people of southern Ghana, shaping the album’s rhythms around its distinctive pulse. The vocal arrangements echo the traditional Akan modal style, grounding the music firmly in Ghana’s cultural heritage. Yet Sikyi Highlife is equally forward-thinking. As electric guitars became standard in highlife during the 1960s, the 1970s ushered in further experimentation. The Noble Kings broke new ground as the first highlife guitar band to incorporate keyboards and a full horn section into their sound, expanding the genre’s sonic possibilities while retaining its rootsy spirit
Gyasi’s approach was part of a broader indigenisation movement among Ghana’s electric highlife bands in the post-independence era Inspired by the nation’s ‘African Personality’ ethos and reinforced by Afrocentric messages arriving from American soul and funk, artists began reclaiming traditional forms within modern arrangements Contemporaries included Koo Nimo, who revived the older palmwine style, and drummer Nii Ashitey, whose Wulomei band pioneered a folklorised Ga highlife sound from 1973
Like many musicians of his generation, Gyasi was a passionate supporter of Ghana’s independence movement In 1963, he travelled as a musical ambassador alongside Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, performing across North Africa and the USSR and carrying Ghanaian culture onto the world stage
The Noble Kings’ mid-’70s line-up featured some of the country’s finest musicians, including guitarist Eric Agyeman (who led the band at the time), Thomas Frimpong on drums and vocals, Ernest Honny on organ, and bassist Ralph Karikari - who was renowned for his innovative technique of translating the rhythms and tonal language of the traditional talking drum onto electric bass.
Upon its original release, Sikyi Highlife became one of the biggest-selling albums of the 1970s for Essiebons, earning Gyasi the affectionate honorary title of “Dr” from his devoted fans. Today, the album remains an evergreen classic, still cherished across Ghana and beyond.

Formed in the wake of a series of bands that explored everything from dark, heavy rock to polished, indie twang, Mountain of Youth and its remarkable debut, Nowhere, NW emerges as a sort of equilibrium state for Hunter Morris, balancing his breezy heartland and lo-fi garage influences with his ’70s folk and ’90s grunge sensibilities. The songs are mature and reflective, reckoning with loneliness, regret, and mortality, and the performances are raw and vulnerable to match, with lean, muscular arrangements centered around Morris’s gritty guitars and riveting live vocal takes.
Born and raised in Georgia, Morris who also moonlights as a fly-fishing guide and conservationist got his start with the Athens-based Gift Horse, which Consequence of Sound hailed as “ one of the city’s best kept secrets.” His next project, Hunter Morris & Blue Blood, earned similar praise for what PopMatters described as its unique brand of “introspective gloom pop. ” Mountain of Youth, however, showcases a new side of Morris, stripping his songs back to their barest, most essential elements The result is an honest, empathetic examination of purpose and impermanence, a stark meditation on the passage of time and the loss of innocence delivered by a keen observer of the human condition

Khun Narin III

Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band are a multi-generational psychedelic powerhouse from rural Thailand whose ecstatic, amplifier-blown folk music has quietly become one of the most unlikely global cult phenomena of the last decade.
Hailing from Phetchabun Province, the group formed as a community celebration band — playing weddings, temple fairs, ordinations and village parades. At the center of their sound is the electrified phin, a traditional three-stringed Thai lute whose piercing, spiraling melodies cut through walls of percussion and portable PA distortion. What might begin as a local procession quickly transforms into something transcendent: hypnotic riffs cycling endlessly, rhythms pushing forward with relentless momentum, musicians of all ages locked into communal euphoria.
The world first encountered this raw electricity when a grainy YouTube video led to their 2014 international debut, introducing global audiences to a sound that felt both ancient and radically psychedelic. Critics struggled for comparisons — surf rock, molam, garage psych, ritual trance — but Khun Narin’s music defied easy categorization. As NPR wrote, “Khun Narin is almost too good to be true.” WIRED called it “one of the most eccentric psychedelic records of the year,” while Newsweek praised its “indescribably beautiful psychedelia.” Champions including Gilles Peterson, The Gaslamp Killer, and Floating Points have all publicly celebrated the band’s singular power.
Now, ten years after their last release, Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band return with their first new album in a decade — and their first ever recorded inside a professional studio. Produced by Tommy Brenneck (known for his work with Amy Winehouse, Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones, Beyoncé, Mark Ronson, and The Budos Band), the album captures the band with a depth and clarity never heard before — without sacrificing the ecstatic propulsion that defines them.
The result is both refinement and revelation. The phin still soars in sharp, spiraling lines; the percussion still drives with marathon intensity; but now every texture resonates with new dimension. It is the sound of a village tradition amplified for the world stage — communal, kinetic, and joyfully uncontainable.
Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band do not simply perform songs; they create momentum. They build trance from repetition. They turn celebration into transport. A decade later, their return feels less like a comeback and more like a continuation of something timeless — music that exists beyond borders, beyond genres, and beyond expectation.

1967 DEBUT BY SAN FRANCISCO-BASED PSYCH PIONEERS!
”...their sole album, released in 1968, suggests a mid-point between classic San Francisco psychedelic rock and the poppier constructs of acts like the Turtles and the Beau Brummels.”
- Mark Deming (AllMusic.com)

Rock 'n' Roll lightning can strike anywhere. The Neigb'rhood Childr'n, tucked away in Medford, Oregon, (near the California border) were living proof that if you've got it, your mailing address doesn't really matter. And the Neighb'rhood Childr'n definitely had it.
When Dyan Hoffman, Rick Bolz, Ron Raschdorf and W.A. Farrens drove 350 miles through the mighty redwood groves down to San Francisco to cut their first album at Leo de Gar Kulka's Golden State Recorders, they couldn't have picked a better time. It was the summer of 1967–now known as the Summer Of Love–and San Francisco was inundated with young people from all over the world, spurred on by a blossoming rock scene that included Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Co. and the Grateful Dead. And yet, none of those legends in the making ever cut an album as hard to find these days–extremely rare and collectible–as the LP by the Neighb'rhood Childr'n.
Not only is their record hideously hard to find, it's amazingly groovy coming from four kids from a rural background. Dyan's voice has the earnest zeal of a young Grace Slick, and the complex arrangements run the table from acid-soaked tripsichord to fiery anthems meant to spur on a new generation of street-fighting men as well as lonely navigators of the mind. Not surprisingly, Dyan reveals that some of this amazing material was inspired by seeing Quicksilver Messenger Service for the first time. "They were always my favorite group," she says. It just goes to show what you can soak up and give back to the world if your heart is in the right place.

„It might sound like a cliché, but the music on the album „The Sea“ emerged from watching the sea every morning on Fårö - more precisely, in Aursviken. It was the subtle shifts in the sea, the waves, the direction of the wind, and the colour of the sky that filled me with inspiration. The light and the darkness. The fact that we have this beautiful sea surrounding us, and the sky above as an opening toward infinity. Sometimes it’s that simple. I recorded the entire album during the summer of 2024 in a barn on Fårö, using a 1920 Steinway grand piano and a Juno-60 synthesiser through a Nagra tape recorder.“
The album was mixed by Anders Af Klintberg, and the cover image is by artist Martina Hoogland Ivanow.
Matti Bye is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed and distinctive composers for film, theater, and sound art. On his new album Chott, German-Tunisian producer and composer Taroug confronts his origins. Named after the Chott El Djerid, a vast salt lake in southern Tunisia, the ten-track album revolves around personal history and the search for identity. Chott is a conceptual work shaped by contrasting atmospheres, from minimalistic melancholy to raw, bass-heavy intensity. It blends traditional instruments with contemporary electronic textures, drawing lines between past and present.
Personal materials—such as vocal samples from family members—add layers of intimacy and cultural depth, most notably on the title track, featuring an original Arabic poem spoken by Taroug’s father, and on 1995, a song reflecting on early childhood memories in Tunisia. Beyond these intimate dimensions, he works with sonic imagery that captures the sensory experience of heat and landscape in pieces like Saraab and Sirocco. In Nakhla, recordings of palm trees transformed into repetitive movements evoke scenes of southern Tunisia’s palm plantations, where organic and mechanical sounds converge.
For the artwork, Taroug once again collaborated with architect and designer Marie Brosius, assembling an experimental collage from old personal photographs of Tunisia that visually echoes the album’s themes of heritage and remembrance.

Ramsey Thornton makes modern-day folk music for early mornings and quiet hours. It's a warm, rhythmic sound, fueled by intricate fingerpicking and the observational storytelling of a lifelong musician who's still discovering new horizons. Long before he became an unsung hero of Tulsa's music scene — playing banjo in Ken Pomeroy's band, drumming for jazz combos, and collaborating with hometown heroes like Wilderado — the Oklahoma native began drumming at 6 years old. By his late-teens, he was playing stringed instruments, too. Banjo came first. Acoustic guitar followed, with Ramsey developing a hypnotic, percussive style — including intricate rhythms and uniquely phrased arpeggios — that seemed to nod to the two instruments he'd already learned.
Ramsey recorded I Called It! in Brooklyn, where he teamed up with Isaac Stalling and Sam Skinner (Pinegrove) in a Bed-Stuy studio. They anchored each song with a live performance of guitar and vocals, adding other instruments — from the interlocking layers of strings that sweep through "Tony's Song," a gorgeous duet with Ken Pomeroy, to the brushed percussion and keyboards that punctuate "Backyard" — for textural effect. Back home in Oklahoma, Ramsey tapped Chad Copeland (Broncho, Wilderado) to contribute synth, drones, and other atmospherics to tracks like "Fourth of July." Even so, I Called It generally unfolds like a one-man show, capturing Ramsey Thornton in his element: intimate, locked-in, and focused on the present moment.
"I like my music to sound natural," he says simply. "These are songs that I wrote around my kitchen table. I recorded them with my friends. I hope they just sound like me."

With I Called It!, Ramsey Thornton keeps his eye on the outside world and his hands on the fretboard, creating a gentle, guitar-driven soundtrack to everyday life songs friends. I hope they just sound like me." gui

Graham Reynolds – The Portcullis
The Portcullis draws on dungeon-synth textures, medieval ambience, and the imaginative pull of folklore. Taking the listener on a focused journey through shifting eras, symbols, and atmospheres. It plays like a lost fantasy soundtrack, inviting the listener into an adventure that feels both ancient and newly invented.
Released on Fire Records, ‘The Portcullis’ sees composer Graham Reynolds on an ancestral journey back to Launceston Castle.
"For The Portcullis, I took a deep dive into the history of my family’s patrilineal side. Starting with my grandfather, an ironworker who built the Hartford Cathedral, to my great great great Grandmother, who was a galley cook on a Welsh sailing ship, to the enlightenment era celebrity portrait painter, Joshua Reynolds, and finally to twelfth century know Richard Reynell (before the Reynolds spelling was standardized). Reynell was the Sheriff of Devon and the custodian of Lauceston Castle. While King Richard I was away on the crusades, Reynell made his name defending the castle from the usurper Prince John. I started making sketches of the scenes and stories I imagined. The Portcullis follows Reynell from castle to castle, sequentially as they were built after the Norman invasion. On Reynell’s chest and shield is the symbol and crest of the Reynolds family: The Portcullis."
Graham Reynolds creates an “ominous, stark environment that rumbles with sounds evocative of the natural world, in both its beauty and despair” New York Times
Known for his wide-ranging versatility, from film and television scores to classical ballet, Graham has scored over seventy films and TV episodes to date. His ongoing collaboration with Richard Linklater the most notable.

Field Commander Ali –The Next From Field Commander

Field Commander Ali is the solo project of Ali Mollica, a folk song person living on the South Coast of NSW, Australia . The Next From Field Commander, her new record and second under that taken name, was recorded in her bedroom in Stanwell Park, a beachside town surrounded by bushland. Here, where the Great Dividing Range meets the Tasman Sea, Mollica worked quickly in the early part of 2025, utilising little more than a classical guitar and a 4-track tape recorder to execute her vision. The result is a truly beguiling Australian folk record.
With a voice that balances understated vulnerability with determined stoicism, Mollica describes everyday scenes, passing interactions and the moments that follow moments between people, all with an astonishing clarity of expression. Full moons are felt but remain unwitnessed, great loves lean into praxis or strain against it, and time is a character that watches quietly on all the while.
Despite its modest conception, both the songs and recordings are possessed by a unique density. Layered vocals are used undramatically but effectively. Conversational asides seem to open outwards like leaves, and offhand remarks reveal themselves to be quiet realisations through subtle repetition. There is an intimate spaciousness within these songs too, with shuffling pages, creaking chairs, and distant whistling all entering the sonic sphere.
The spirit of folk song clairvoyants like Bridget St John, Anne Briggs and Maxine Funke may be sensed throughout, while Michael Hurley’s ‘Wildegeeses’ is given a faithful, though suitably idiosyncratic, re-reading. A tradition is being channeled here, though ultimately what you are hearing is the emergence of a distinct new voice.

Few artists arrive as compellingly yet elusively as did Stuart Moxham upon the startling debut of Young Marble Giant’s sole studio album, Colossal Youth. Initial excitement was thrust upon the young Alison Statton, who sang songs written by Stuart with a couple of exceptions. The unaffected tone of her voice was in steep contrast to the typical goings-on in that still quite punky time, but it was what she sang that fully sold it. Moxham’s lyrics were both intensely personal and woefully oblique. There seemed to be a sort of story in there. Confusingly, that story often felt like it was Alison’s rather than the fellow who’d penned it. The unexpected miracle deal with Rough Trade and the album’s subsequent success had the band stymied for a second act and it wasn’t long before the group disintegrated, although circumstances often brought members and a few of their peers together in odd combinations and pairings.
None of the three YMG members have been especially prolific, but it’s Stuart’s career that has seemed the least straightforward. In the case of his first “solo” full-length in thirty years, Stuart took the unusual step of entering an alien studio with American producer Dave Trumfio and allowing him to decide what tracks (of a large number submitted by Stuart) to record, and how they’d be orchestrated. Stuart’s minimalism is quite intact, the range of emotions quite wide.
