Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight! This Issue: Justin West of Secret City Records

How did you personally get started in the music industry? My father founded a record label, Justin Time Records, and I had the pleasure of working for him during many summers throughout my teenage years. I also joined him at recording sessions from an even younger age. I learned the ropes by observing him work and doing every possible job I could get my hands on. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? Ha. Yes. I had a high school band, Dogs Playing Poker. We were absolutely terrible, but did get some cool support slots because we were good at hustling ticket sales via our high school networks. What’s interesting is that 3 of us in the band ended up with careers in music - one is still a drummer, another is a producer out of New York, and I’m doing the label thing with Secret City. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area, and if so, how is this reflected in your releases? The label was founded in 2006 in Montreal, Canada. We’re very much a “Montreal” label. That may evolve over next few years, but, up until now and with only a few exceptions (Owen Pallett, Shad, Diamond Rings, and Cold Specks are Toronto-based), virtually all of the artists we’ve worked with are Montreal-based. It’s not by design, but I think it’s more because of the strong artist community in Montreal and the natural network-effect that comes from that. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? There’s a real mix of varying artistry and genres across the catalogue, but I would also say that there are common themes throughout. Whether it’s Patrick Watson, The Barr Brothers, Leif Vollebekk, Alexandra Stréliski, Klô Pelgag, or otherwise, there’s a “cinematic” quality to their composition, arrangements, and recordings. And, personally, they’re all really nice people! What is the meaning behind the name for the label? It came together in a funny way. The word “secret” represented something unknown, behind-the-scenes, mysterious, and untapped. That was appealing to me for sure, and the centerpiece for the name. The word “city” was added to represent a community. So, “Secret City” was really about being a little community label out of Montreal.

How has the label changed since it started? The label has changed so much over the years. First, we’ve grown to a team of 15 people (now including 1 person in New York City, which is exciting). Obviously, like any company, the organization needed to evolve its infrastructure alongside that growth. Second, we used to license out albums to other labels outside of Canada. We worked with so many labels that we looked up to, whether it was Rough Trade for Miracle Fortress or Domino for Patrick Watson. That model is less relevant in today’s music industry, as digital has really driven the need for globally-controlled releases. So, we’ve had to adapt to that and build global infrastructure, whether that’s local distribution, promotion, or otherwise. With all of that said, the underlying philosophy of the label and its center of gravity have not changed at all - it’s still about working with incredible artists to help get their music out into the world. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? At the outset in 2006, it was really only about releasing Patrick Watson’s album, Close to Paradise. There was no real ambition beyond that, but the success of that project gave us some momentum to build upon. We then released Miracle Fortress’ “Five Roses” in 2007 and Plants and Animals’ “Parc Avenue” in 2008. It was one album per year, with very focused long-term efforts. We still focus and think very long-term, but, with the increase in staff, we also increased the number of releases to 6-8 per year. And we’re working on those albums globally. That’s a big change. Other than that, we’re also really interested in utilizing our infrastructure for other entrepreneurs and labels. Our latest partnership with the electronic artist/DJ, Tiga, is a step in that direction. His latest release, HOTLIFE, was a collaborative release between Turbo Recordings and Secret City Records. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? I’ll take this one from a different angle. Putting aside the music, there are a few albums that had an enormous impact on myself and the label. Of course, our first release, “Close to Paradise” by Patrick Watson in 2006, was not only a crash course in running a label, but also took me all over the world on tour. It opened up my eyes and ears to all sorts of possibilities and ideas, and developed incredible friendships which still exist today. I can safely say that without the success of that album, there likely wouldn’t be a Secret City today. The Barr Brothers “Sleeping Operator” in 2014 was another incredible ride. It was the first album that we truly released globally on our own, which also coincided with us taking control of our own global digital distribution. The whole experience changed the way Secret City thought and operated. Lastly, “HOTLIFE” by Tiga, released earlier this year, was a key step for us. It was a true partnership/collaboration with Tiga’s label, Turbo Recordings, and a step into the world of electronic and DJ culture - both exciting and important “firsts” for Secret City.

Indie Vinyl Jess Williamson has built one of the most distinctive voices in American music — crystalline, acrobatic, and unmistakably her own. The Texas-born, Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has spent the better part of a decade carving out her own lane at the intersection of indie folk, altcountry, and a deeply personal confessional tradition. Now, on her seventh studio album, she steps into new creative territory. Produced by Shooter Jennings, the album finds Williamson's artistry meeting its ideal counterpart. Jennings brings a deeproots sensibility and studio instinct honed across decades, and together they've crafted twelve songs that honor the grit and sweep of classic country while remaining unmistakably contemporary.

WE ARE THE LCB AN ALL ABILITIES ABILITIESBAND BAND FROM ATHENS, GA WHOSE CREATIVE EXPRESSION AND BOUNDLESS ENTHUSIASM IS NOTHING SHORT OF INFECTIOUS & INSPIRING. GENRES: POP, ROCK, R&B STREET DATE: OCTOBER 9, 2026 In many ways, The Love.Craft Band (LCB) is an ordinary rock and roll outfit. They write and record songs, play shows locally and on the road, and do just about everything else you’d expect a band to do. Look a little closer, though, and you’ll discover that’s what makes them so extraordinary. “The LCB is an all-abilities band,” says Aslyn Nash, “meaning that four of our six members are adults with developmental disabilities. This group isn’t just a creative outlet for them; it’s a therapeutic one, as well.” Born out of the Athens, Georgiabased non-profit Love.Craft, The LCB started out as a weekly music class that quickly took on a life of its own. Now, the group is the subject of a five-part documentary series that follows their first national tour, as well as the making of their debut album, We Are The LCB, out 10/9/26 via Strolling Bones Records.

Gnod – Chronicles of Gnowt (Vol 2) Rocket Recordings

MINT GREEN VINYL LP W/ OBI

LAUNCH437

5056688856779

2026-10-09

Two decades have passed in the land of Gnod, yet the psychic travelogue only becomes more enthralling as it goes on. And whilst this band has flourished via dauntless conviction, hive-mind magic and a fierce and uncompromising spirit, one ingredient has served as a crucial fuel for the fire – the monolithic singularity of the riff. This second chapter of Gnod’s sort-of-anniversary trilogy also originates in the same six day sessions as the first, at Hellfire Studios near Dublin with producer Spud Murphy (Lankum, Black Midi etc). Yet the focus this time is on the transcendental heaviness and repetition that the band have often used as a primary fulcrum of their approach. This volume captures the sound of strings flayed, throats shredded, skins punished by the organic chemistry of this formidably powerful band in a room. The results are amongst the most fearsome and kinetic material that Gnod have summoned to date. As has often been the case for a band heavily driven by serendipity and intuition, the best plan is no plan at all. “We find quite regularly that spontaneity and the no thought approach works better than over analysis and detailed planning” clarifies the band's Chris Haslam Maximal yet minimal, claustrophobic yet expansive, free in approach yet mercilessly disciplined in their intensity – Gnod like every truly great band are a mass of contradictions. On Chronicles Of Gnowt (Vol 2), this thunderous paradox has never sounded fiercer. To paraphrase Nietzsche: “Is man merely a mistake of Gnod's? Or Gnod merely a mistake of man?”

Antiyano Progresivo is a collection of rare soul, funk, Latin, RnB and psychedelic rock from the islands of the former Dutch Caribbean – Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten, celebrating an often-overlooked chapter in Caribbean musical history.

OVERVIEW: Between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s, musicians across the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten created music that crossed stylistic boundaries, forming a close-knit network shaped by common histories and identities, while rarely receiving wider recognition. From the psychedelic funk of local stars Sugar Ice Tea and Cryptus Confession to the Latin influences of visiting musicians like Puerto Rican star Mon Rivera via Surinamese-influenced soul and the garage rock of Los Honda, the islands nourished a huge array of styles and talent. Antiyano Progresivo unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly transforming Caribbean. During the twentieth century, oil industries, migration and tourism reshaped the islands, creating unparalleled cultural exchange while deepening social divisions. African, Latin American, North American and European musical traditions intertwined with local forms, producing a rich and distinctive musical landscape. Tambú, tumba, calypso and Caribbean dance music coexisted alongside soul, funk, psychedelic rock, reggae, Latin music and American and British pop. Musicians moved fluidly between these styles, developing sounds that were unmistakably local while remaining connected to wider currents across the Caribbean and beyond. The period also coincided with growing movements for cultural and political selfdetermination. Events such as Curaçao's Trinta di Mei uprising in 1969, the emergence of Black Power movements and increasing calls for greater autonomy fostered renewed pride in African heritage, local languages and cultural expression. These ideas resonated through music, inspiring artists to challenge conventions and create work that reflected changing identities.

KEY POINTS First international compilation showcasing music from the former Dutch Caribbean – Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten. An overlooked piece of Caribbean musical history, continuing the story from recent Soundway release Kaiso Power. A unique blend of Cuban, South American, Funk, Rock, psychedelic and reggae styles that reflects the diverse communities on the islands Features in-depth liner notes and biographical information of key musicians

lovely...steeped in an easygoing melancholia - Stereogum A sought-after collaborator in Chicago’s indie music scene for over a decade, V.V. Lightbody’s third LP is a marvelous showcase of her singular production and arrangement skills, ear-catching melodies, and signature frank lyricism. Period Piece presents a deeply relatable audit of Lightbody’s own anxieties, imperfections, and charming peculiarities as she falls in love, ages, dabbles in divination, and re-evaluates her place in the world. Notably, Period Piece also marks Lightbody’s debut as a lead producer on her own album – a dazzling and welcome emergence. With layers of perfectly tucked backing vocals, swirling guitars in harmony, chugging bass lines, and romantic, melodic flutes, Lightbody has crafted a playful and pristinely recorded collection of indie-folk songs, veering between 70s Brazilian samba and contemporary electro-pop. Think, Cate Le Bon strolling through an overgrown meadow. Dave Vettraino provided additional production and mixing support, and Lightbody called in a robust team of friends to contribute throughout, including Macie Stewart, Sam Cantor, Emma Hospelhorn, Jack Henry Lickerman, and Cassandra Jenkins.

more eaze–composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Mari Rubio– is a dynamic artist and a growing influence in contemporary music. Her work melds youthful pop sensibilities with deep explorations of elemental musical theory. Rubio’s production, arrangement and performance credits span across a diverse and lauded list of artists including Water Damage, claire rousay, Tasha, Jeff Tobias, Chanel Beads, Faye Webster, and Wendy Eisenberg. Following her bedroom pop Thrill Jockey debut, sentence structure in the country, more eaze returns with valley and structure, an extremely limited edition CD made up of the the purest distillation of her exploratory work over the past year.

TRACK LISTING:

A firm believer in the notion that no song or composition is ever permanently fixed, the Brooklyn-based musician references her own past work as a jumping-off point for future projects. The pieces on both valley and structure and sentence structure are undeniably in conversation with one another while also comprising two incredibly distinct works. As such, “the producer” has been stripped to its core and then dubbed out on “i’m in the structure.” The new version keeps the idea of the ostinato as a repeating arpeggio on the violin, accompanied by the occasional drone and scrape of a drum machine. The sprawling, 20-minute long “once you say yes to the structure, you never get out” opens with an almost glitching rhythmic pattern, gradually phasing as an extra eighth note is added to the figure, the whole ensemble droning as longer notes are introduced like slowly changing release and attack times. By the end, the process nearly reverses as the ensemble returns to a hyperactive rhythmic pulse. The piece demonstrates Rubio’s penchant for both elevating her music past what’s expected and grounding herself in her roots.

more eaze returns with valley and structure, an extremely limited edition CD comprised of a companion album to the critically lauded sentence structure in the country.

valley and structure expands into new horizons that coalesce into a variety of arrangements and formations. Where sentence structure tears and rebuilds, valley and structure branches out, forever actualizing in different shapes and contexts. Following her extraordinary take on pop with sentence structure in the country, Rubio’s latest work serves as a conceptual signpost, pushing her music forward into an exciting new territory. valley and structure is a true testament to the musicianship of Mari Rubio, demonstrating her knack for composition, collaboration, arrangements, and direction. With valley and structure, Rubio transforms the smallest musical ideas into expansive worlds of possibility.

1. they tried to shove me in the structure 2. what’s wrong with the structure? 3. once you say yes to the structure, you never get out 4. i’m in the structure 5. how can we get out of the structure SALES POINTS

Finn Carter - Finding Home 10/09/2026

LP

Item number: WR4855LP UPC: 5065024546182 Pianist/composer Finn Carter is at the center of London's Packaging: adventurous genre-blending jazz community, regularly appearing at Boxlot: 12 venues like Ronnie Scott's and The Vortex, working with stars of the pop world - Loyle Carner, Olivia Dean and Rex Orange County - while honing his own uncompromising musical vision. On Finding Home he's joined by three musicians with a similarly eclectically unfettered approach to music making, that embraces high-level complexity while maintaining a direct connection to the listener. Kaidi Akinnibi on tenor sax brings his distinctive, light-as-air tone and compatible range of experience across musical genres, while the rhythm team of Joe McLaren on bass and drummer Blake Cascoe provide a revelation in shifting texture and intensity, always driving the music to greater heights. Trumpeter Christos Stylianides brings his uniquely individual voice as a guest to enrich the ensemble. Finding Home is a powerfully characterful statement from a standout artist who's crafted his own voice, surrounded by a like-minded family of players. Each of the eight tunes has its own distinct personality, yet they all hang together as a continuous piece, establishing their own musical identity through Finn's tumbling, lyrical piano, Kaidi's nimble, breathy saxophone, and the endlessly flexible interactive grooves from bass and drums. Finn's music contains echoes of his inspirations; he names Alice Coltrane, Andrew Hill, Jason Moran, Ambrose Akinmusire and Donny Hathaway as favourites, but transcends influence to make its own utterly individual statement. At the helm of this group of similarly uncategorisable musicians, Finn Carter has delivered his most accomplished statement yet with Finding Home

“DOGWOOD MAIDEN VOYAGE” PHYS STREET DATE - 10.9.2026 DIG STREET DATE - 9.28.2026 GAR HOLE RECORDS, GHR-034

GENRE: FOLK, FREAKFOLK, SINGER-SONGWRITER KEY MARKETS: PORTLAND OR, DENVER, LONDON, CHICAGO, LA LITTLE ROCK / FAYETTEVILLE, AR (HOME MARKET) Jude Brothers sails toward a new shore with DOGWOOD MAIDEN VOYAGE. Created in living rooms, recording studios, and train tunnels between Tennessee and Arkansas, it's an adventurous album that's every bit as eclectic as its world-traveling creator. Here, Jude's vision of freethinking folk music — a multicultural sound that truly knows no borders, inspired by a vast array of global folk, sacred music, and pop songs— is given a lush update with string arrangements and vocal harmonies, shining new light on an artist who's always evolving. Jude's songs are rarely linear. Instead, they explode outward in unexpected directions, exploring left-hand turns and detours before returning to their original paths. Caught halfway between the free-form, the freak-folk, and the finely-crafted, they tell stories about the complicated paths we take toward self-discovery, the push-and-pull between the desire to belong and the perpetual feeling of otherness, and the growth that emerges during times of barrenness. "You can sit with an old southerner on the porch and they’ll be telling you a story, and there are 17 different tangents," Jude says. "That's how I make music. I take all different plot lines and weave them together." Throughout Dogwood Maiden Voyage, Jude indulges in childlike fantasy as an adult, encouraging fractured pieces of identity to communicate with one another. Much of that fantasy takes place in the woods, surrounded by trees, protected by the natural world that Jude's music so wistfully evokes. There's grief and darkness here, but there's light, too, like a forested landscape that's beginning to embrace spring after a long winter. Dogwood Maiden Voyage makes room for both sides of that divide. It's an album of multitudes — a record for all seasons.

GRUB’s self-titled debut album is a 9-track dive into the beautiful mess of being human. Backed by a powerhouse lineup of Western Australian heavyweights, Matilda Beales’ songwriting is darkly funny, brutally honest, and utterly unapologetic, tackling everything from sobriety to purging hard feelings wrapped in B-grade horror imagery. Shifting from frantic garage-punk to infectious dark-disco, the record blends gritty rock energy with visceral beauty—a striking intro to a band refusing to be boxed in.

Lily Juniper ‘Bloom Gloom’ Lily Juniper’s debut album, ‘Bloom Gloom’ is set for release in September 2026 via Friends of Friends. Co-written and produced by long term collaborator and partner yours.truly, the record holds a mirror up to ourselves and the world around us. Inspired by sounds of the early 2010’s post dubstep and indie scenes and written with feelings at the forefront, the album explores themes of self discovery, nostalgia and the endless battle between light and dark, with each track telling a story of what it means to be human. ‘I’ll be turning 30 as this record comes out, which feels like a really poignant way to close the chapter on the past 10 years - for me it has felt like a decade of extended childhood. In getting older and happier, I’ve also gone to deeper and darker places. Trying to grow and find a sense of inner peace in a world that feels more confusing and sad than ever. There’s light, there’s dark. There’s bloom, there’s gloom’.

Fontaines D.C. release their fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber, on October 16, 2026 via XL Recordings. Produced by James Ford, it follows 2024’s Romance, the album that took the Dublin five-piece from critical favorites to one of the biggest bands in the world. Romance debuted at No. 2 in the UK - since certified platinum there - and delivered the band their first entry on the Billboard 200. It earned two GRAMMY nominations (Best Rock Album, and Best Alternative Music Performance for “Starburster”) and won International Group of the Year at the 2025 BRIT Awards, the band’s second BRIT win. It also took the Album Award at the 2024 Rolling Stone UK Awards and Ireland’s Choice Music Prize, and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Announced with lead single “Marianne” and its accompanying Dave Meyers (Kendrick’s “HUMBLE”, Travis Scott’s “SICKO MODE”)-directed video, Dopamine Chamber arrives like a constellation behind undulating sighs of smog: potent balladry, anthemic melodies glinting through the murk. In a world tipping towards collapse, it asks how pleasure mutates amid peril— and what our pursuit of it reveals about us. It’s the sound of a band moving decisively away from the guitar language of their early records into something colder, stranger and more synthetic. Dopamine Chamber takes its title from the idea of a record as a room the listener steps into. “The album itself is a dopamine chamber,” says Chatten. “You step inside and we test these different mind- or mood-altering pieces of music on you.”

On Hippies, Thugs and Heroes, he lets his subconscious take the wheel, pulling from a cast of old friends, false gurus, former selves, and invented characters who insisted on having their stories told. The result is an album that refuses to sit still. It opens with the bright, Byrdsinspired jangle of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” — a song rooted in Thompson’s own history with 1970s spiritual movements and the complicated pull of charismatic leaders — before swinging into the rowdy “Everybody’s Stealing” and landing on the bluesy closer “Stringer.” Along the way, “Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking” delivers some of his most inventive guitar work yet, a rawnerve build into a splintered, psychedelic solo that captures a hardscrabble cast of London strivers and connivers. Recorded live with his longtime band — Taras Prodaniuk on bass, Michael Jerome on drums, David Mansfield on guitar and fiddle, and wife Zara Phillips on backing vocals — at Hobosound Studio in Weehawken, NJ, the sessions moved fast, often in just two to four takes. But the songwriting itself runs deep: more elaborate home demos gave Thompson’s own musical identity a stronger hold on the final record, resulting in an album he describes as “less them and more me.”

VINYL Call it serendipity or genius, but when four legends of Texas music pooled their talents in December 1989, a new sound was born: the Texas Tornados. Freddy Fender. Doug Sahm. Augie Meyers. Flaco Jimenez. Four careers’ worth of Texas music royalty, united on a single stage — and on October 16, 1990, just one year into their run, they took that stage at Austin City Limits and delivered a performance for the ages.

Fender was already a mega-star behind “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” and “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” Sahm and Meyers had built their legend with the Sir Douglas Quintet in San Antonio, combining psychedelia, Gulf Coast blues, and spicy conjunto into a sound that shook up the pop charts with “She’s About a Mover.” And Flaco Jimenez, alongside his father and brother, had helped invent an entire genre — blending Mexican Norteño music with German and Czech polkas and waltzes into something completely Sel. #: NW7058LP CONFIG: 2LP, Gatefold, Marketing Sticker, Red, his own.

Together, they were unstoppable. The 19-song set sweeps through Tex-Mex, blues, country, rock and roll, and conjunto with the loose, joyful energy of a band still reveling in the magic of what they’d created. From the bilingual tenderness of “She Never Spoke Spanish to Me” to the barn-burning finale of “She’s About a Mover” and “96 Tears,” every song crackles with the chemistry of four old friends who knew exactly how lucky they were to be sharing that stage. This Tex-Mex revue created a raucous, infectious, danceable sound that ranks as an all-time Austin City Limits favorite. Now on vinyl for the first time, it sounds exactly like it was always meant to.

Available as a gatefold 2xLP / CD with new artwork on October 16th: Car Seat Headrest’s Will Toledo re-imagines the band’s breakout on Teen of Denial: Joe’s Story. On the original record, Toledo used the name “Joe” as a stand-in for himself. Revisiting Teens in the run-up to its 10th year, he felt compelled to give Joe a backstory and began tweaking the album to tell that tale. “The resulting work feels more like the album Teens of Denial was meant to be,” Will Toledo writes in a new message to fans. “When you’re writing from a dark space, it’s hard to have perspective on where you’re at. This time, I could pull from memories of that darkness, and use the distance and additional perspective of ten years of life to shed a fuller light on the experience. Joe is a character going through some of what I experienced, and some of his own problems.” Early this year, the group returned to the studio with producer Steve Fisk to update accordingly – tweaking lyrics and recording new tunes in the “Denial-style,” including the optimistic and anthemic “Joe Drives Again.” The result retains Teens’s dark edge and youthful cynicism, but promises a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Toledo writes, “I’m so grateful that this is a work that people have kept coming to, and I hope that this presentation does them honor with a fresh offering to the conversation. We’ve known that “it doesn’t have to be like this”; now we can wonder – “‘what it if were like this?’”

THE BLOOD OF OTHERS

LP: BRUCE COCKBURN

O N W

A L S O

C D

hat began back in the eighties as a vague notion grew over time into a strong desire to put together a collection of material, written by others, that I found sticking to the edges of my musical landscape. The accumulation of these songs started in the sixties, before I’d even begun to try to create my own. Some of those stayed in my memory as warm-up exercises, or as relief from hearing myself sing my own words. Every now and then a new one would appear. I’d be fooling around on the guitar and realize I just played something that would fit with — You Belong to Me, for example — and then I would have to actually learn the song. Some of the choices are sentimental favorites, others interesting vehicles for exploring the fingerboard. All of them connect to times and places that remain shadings on the map of a life… The Blood of Others is a novel, written during the Nazi occupation of France by Simone de Beauvoir. I read it in the seventies and found it very worthwhile. Among other things it deals with personal responsibility in the face of scary oppression, and the kinds of choices people make. I have borrowed the title because it seems perfect for an album of songs I didn’t write.

WISH I WAS IN HEAVEN SITTING DOWN

Robert Wilkins made up this song. I first heard it on an early seventies gospel compilation. Wilkins’ powerful bottle neck guitar and passionate singing made this conversation with God instantly memorable. The original guitar part is simple enough that I could maybe execute it, but it felt right to incorporate some of the angular harmonies that come naturally with the DADGAD tuning.

My earliest recollection of hearing this song is of Fred Neil’s beautiful version, though I was aware of it before that. It came back to mind when I got to perform it with the McGarrigle sisters at Pete Seeger’s ninetieth birthday event in NYC.

Jo Stafford’s gorgeously true voice was all over the radio with this when I was five. The geographical references were exciting, awakening the travel bug in me years before On the Road lit a fire under it.

FARE THEE WELL

YOU BELONG TO ME

, THAT S ALL RIGHT Elvis Presley hit the radio in Ottawa right when I was hitting adolescence. He was captivatingly charismatic of course — but the guitar! Scotty Moore’s leads, by turns raucous and tender, bred a burning desire to play the instrument. This was one of the many songs that caught me, though the version I worked out owes more to Arthur Crudup’s original recording.

FOUR STRONG WINDS

The youngest of all these songs. Le hibou, the coffeehouse that was my spiritual home, was on the touring route of most of the artists in the sixties folk scene. Ian and Sylvia were regulars, appearing there a couple of times a year. We were all very excited when their song showed up on the radio.

, GOD BLESS THE CHILD

The 1939 creation of Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog. One Sunday, in 1960 or 61, I spent my collection money on what was likely a bootleg copy of Belafonte Sings the Blues at the corner store across from Westboro United Church. Tasty jazz arrangements of really good songs. A couple of years later I got to hear Billie Holiday’s original version. Theologically a bit off base, but a deeply moving expression of disappointment with the human species…

LOUIS COLLINS

AS TIME GOES BY

Written by Herman Hupfeld in 1939. Who doesn’t love the scene in Casablanca in which Dooley Wilson plays this song, Ingrid Bergman at his side? I thought I should include the original preamble, which gives the familiar part of the song a context, but it seemed to want an update. Hopefully Herman approves…

, BUDDY BOLDEN S BLUES

I had heard some Jellyroll Morton, but I actually learned this song out of a book, or maybe Sing Out! magazine. My friends were singing country blues and old timey music. I was drawn to the somewhat more sophisticated style of ragtime and early jazz. For an interesting take on Buddy Bolden, said to be the first jazz trumpet player, check out Michael Ondaatje’s novel Coming Through Slaughter.

One afternoon in August or September 1963, Barbie Luther invited me to her parents’ house to listen to music. She opened a bottle of Mateus wine and put on Mississippi John Hurt’s Folk Songs and Blues album. I was blown away by the sweetness, the idiosyncratic phrasing and the way he put voice and fingerpicked guitar together.

YELLOW DOG BLUES

I first heard this on a collection of Bessie Smith recordings around 1962. Right away fell in love with the lyrics. WC Handy copyrighted the song in 1914, having likely composed it some years earlier. When he wrote it he was living in Clarksdale MS. He made good use of the local slang, Yellow Dog for instance, being a nickname for the Yazoo Delta railway.

LES FEUILLES MORTES

Autumn Leaves is of course a familiar song, having been recorded hundreds of times by everyone from Doris Day to Cannonball Adderley. I didn’t realize it was really of French origin until I came across it in a collection of poetry by Jacques Prévert. Although the English lyrics are fine, Prévert’s words, in which a recitation sets up the sung verses, go a little deeper…

, I LL BE SEEING YOU I’d heard this 1938 song growing up, sung by Bing Crosby among others. Much later, in the nineties, it came alive for me in a personal way, in the aftermath of a brief but heart-opening relationship. I was driving somewhere with the radio on and somebody’s rendering of it came on. I may have misheard it, but I thought that version ended with the line, “I’ll be looking at someone, but I’ll be seeing you”. That’s not in the original lyrics. They only refer to the moon, but it hit me in a powerful way. Thinking about the song, it struck me that it would work if I gave it a pace and rhythmic treatment in the style of I Only Have Eyes For You.

LAPLEGGED DRUNK AGAIN

Paris, 1964. I was playing for pocket money on the street with a couple of guys. It was the end of a summer of bumming around Northern Europe. I took some of my ill-gotten gains to a record store where I found a large selection of American blues and jazz on 45rpm EPs — cheap, and small enough to fit in a duffel — Petey Wheatstraw, the Mound City Blue Blowers, and Lonnie Johnson. The four pieces on the Johnson EP featured fantastic guitar, elegant vocals and a great band. Five or so years later l happened to come across a newspaper ad for Lonnie Johnson, playing in a supper club — in Ottawa! Some friends and I put on jackets and ties and went to hear him. On a break, we asked him for Laplegged Drunk Again. He shook his head and smiled, and said, “Oh, I can’t play that song in a place like this.”

ONE FOR MY BABY

This 1943 product of the songwriting team of Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen was originally sung by Fred Astaire in a film I’ve never seen. I first heard it on the Belafonte album mentioned above, but for me, the definitive version is the one Frank Sinatra recorded in 1958. There’s a cool video floating around, that looks as if it’s taken from a TV show, in which he performs the song sitting at a bar with only the bartender as an audience.

Oh how I wish that you would remember The glad days when we were friends Back then life was more beautiful And the sun burned hotter than today The dead leaves pile up in the shovel See, I haven’t forgotten The dead leaves pile up in the shovel Memories, regrets as well And the north wind carries them away Into the cold night of forgetting See, I haven’t forgotten The song you sang me…

It’s a song that brings us together You loved me, and I loved you We lived, both of us together You who loved me, I who loved you But life separates those who love each other Softly, making no sound And the sea erases from the sand The steps of lovers, disunited

PEACE IN THE VALLEY Another gem of a song I first heard from Elvis. Thomas A. Dorsey (known in another life as Georgia Tom) wrote it in the late thirties for Mahalia Jackson.

oky Erickson & The Explosives had been honing their craft in hot, sweaty clubs all over Texas for a couple of years before this California tour which, along with the Whisky, included the Warfield Theater in San Francisco, Galactica 2000 in Sacramento, the Stone in San Francisco, the Keystone Berkeley in, well, Berkeley, the Bacanal in San Diego and the Europa in Tucson, AZ on the way back to Texas. But, the Whisky was a special, magic night of music. Roky was on top of his game and the Explosives was a well oiled machine capable of musically “turning on a dime” with nary a single apple falling from the cart. The proof in that statement was when, as we were walking on stage to start the show, Roky turned to us and asked “Do you guys know the song Heroin by Lou Reed?” We replied “no” as we plugged in and Roky launched into, you guessed it, “Heroin” by Lou Reed. The results are on this record! —Freddie Krc, The Explosives’ drummer

After is the Y2K-tinged trip-hop pop project of Graham Epstein and Justine Dorsey, who met on Hinge in Los Angeles and realized they’d probably make a better band than a couple. Born on the same day, August 23, 1995, the duo channels influences from Michelle Branch to Portishead, Fountains of Wayne to Enigma, crafting music that feels both nostalgic and new. Their sound has been praised by Rolling Stone, which wrote, “After… feels like a memory you can’t quite place.” Their debut album, Fell Asleep in the Sun, pressed on three specialty colorways plus a gorgeous CD, pairs the band's nostalgic sound with premium packaging worthy of any collection. Housed in a deluxe full-color gatefold jacket, the LP includes a 12-page oversized booklet featuring a custom die-cut cover, lyrics, and exclusive artwork that brings the album's visual world to life. Released via Mom+Pop Music in September 2026, the project highlights tracks like “Take Me to Sunrise,” “Promise (When You Go),” and “Snowburn,” showcasing After’s signature blend of dreamy melodies, textured production, and emotional resonance.

More than three decades after they founded heavens to betsy, Corin Tucker and Tracy Sawyer still have something important to say. Just as riot grrrl punk rock and feminism pushed for inclusivity, bodily autonomy, and gender equality in the early-to-mid ‘90s, there is arguably an even greater need for the scene to rematerialize in an age where women’s voting rights and healthcare access are under siege, as is the safety of any marginalized community. Now, the longtime friends and musicians have answered the call by reuniting as heavens to betsy, the DIY punk project they famously founded back in the riot grrrl halcyon days, among like-minded Olympia artists in Bikini Kill, Team Dresch, and Bratmobile. In celebration of their reunion, Corin (Sleater-Kinney) and Tracy (The Husbands, The Flying Tigers, The Lies) are set to release their first project since 1994: baby’s gone, a 16-track mission statement comprising a never-before-heard demo tape originally recorded by Bratmobile’s Molly Neuman (who also provides liner notes for the forthcoming release), plus the 1993 These Monsters Are Real and the 1994 Direction 7” recordings.

• 1983’s Sleep in Safety Was the Lone 45 Grave Studio Album and the Only One Featuring All of the Band’s Original Members

Formed from putrefying remnants of The Germs, The Consumers, The Bags, The Gun Club, and The Screamers among other L.A. punk outfits, 45 Grave were arguably the first American Goth/deathrock band and inarguably one of the best. Fronted by the Exenemeets-Barbarella vocal and visual stylings of Dinah Cancer (still one of the greatest stage names in a punk rock genre full of ‘em), 45 Grave also featured Paul B. Cutler on guitar, Don Bolles on drums, Rob (Ritter) Graves on bass, and Paul Roessler on keyboards, and from that all-star line-up came 1983’s Sleep in Safety, their lone studio release and only recording with the band’s original members. Probably most famous for the first appearance of the horrifyingly graphic, true-crime track “Partytime,” the single version of which was subsequently cut in 1985 and featured on The Return of the Living Dead soundtrack, Sleep in Safety also offered the early MTV track “Evil” and the band “theme song” “45 Grave” among other blandishments for those who like their rock and roll with a side of the macabre. For our Real Gone Music exhumation of this classic record, we have “embalmed” a very special edition, preserving the original album’s gatefold edition complete with lyrics and adding a custom inner sleeve drawn from the band’s very rare “A Tale of Strange Phenomena” press release—green with black splatter vinyl! STREET DATE: OCTOBER 16, 2026 Joe Poole a.k.a. Wednesday 13 may not be the original horror punk, but one thing’s for sure: he’s an original. Poole formed and recorded four albums with the memorably-entitled band Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13, then was recruited by Slipknot’s Joey Jordison to front the Murderdolls. But it’s his self-titled Wednesday 13 project, which he launched post-Murderdolls, that has proven the most enduring and influential among his many dark delvings into the demimonde. The band’s 2005 debut Transylvania 90210—Songs of Death, Dying, and the Dead is every bit as trashy, hilarious, outrageous, and, most of all, rocking as you would expect, highlighted by the singles “I Walked with a Zombie” (for which the promo video interpolated the band members into footage from Night of the Living Dead) and (our favorite) “Bad Things” with its cathartic chorus “I want bad things to happen to you.” Somehow, this horror rock classic has hitherto escaped vinyl release, but now, just in time for Halloween, we’ve remastered it for vinyl and are issuing it on suitably lurid neon green wax complete with color inner sleeve, with custom label design overseen by Wednesday 13 himself!

TALES FROM THE CRYPT PRESENTS: DEMON KNIGHT ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

(Blue & White Cryptkeeper Halloween Splatter Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: OCTOBER 16, 2026

Wanna hear the soundtrack to Armageddon? This 1995 film starred William Sadler as the Demon Knight, who, along with his new recruit, Jada Pinkett Smith, is charged with fending off The Collector (Billy Zane) and his army of demons from acquiring an ancient relic that is the only thing preventing the complete destruction of the human race. While the flick did meh box office and was panned critically, the soundtrack was easily one of the best of its era and of its kind, an all-star line-up of thrash and heavy metal acts mostly doing otherwise unavailable material (only the track by Pantera appears to have been released prior to the movie). The Pantera, Megadeth, Melvins, and Biohazard entries are particulary good, and the one hip hop tune on the collection, Gravediggaz’ “1-800-Murder,” is an archetypal “horrorcore” rap song. But perhaps the best tune is “Hey Man Nice Shot” by Filter, an outfit that hadn’t released anything prior to this soundtrack. Since this movie came out in 1995, it only came out on LP in Europe at the time; our Real Gone reissue brings it back on blue and white “Cryptkeeper” splatter vinyl!

Spider Man is named for the comic book hero who adorns the cover. The different beats increase in intensity as they progress. Some compositions use percussion effects only, as in a few classical works. A Latin route like this is very effective when players make intelligent decisions (simply another means of expression). That’s All—When musicians play ballads well their love for music really shows. McCoy’s tonal shades, using dynamics wisely, are well-done. With a number as beautiful as this and adequate accompaniment present it’s good to hear this familiar song again. Speak Out, Deagan!—Freddie noted, “On this date I was christening a new set of Deagan vibes, so I named this one, ‘Speak Out! ...” It is immediately established by strong-toned Davis that this is a blues. McCoy’s individuality; what claims he has as a new star; is evident on this one. How a traditional tune is handled by a man shows what has been absorbed by him; and then subsequently expressed personally: Freddie, it is sure, should not be put under indictment for this one! (Spider Man, Speak Out, Deagan!, and Hav’ Mercy are McCoy originals). Dispensing with further preliminaries, let’s welcome this new exponent of the vibes and the attempts he’s making to win a place in the jazz arena, with this LP as a means!

About The Cover How would you react if you were suddenly endowed with the proportionate strength of a thousand spiders, the ability to climb walls and hang from ceilings, and a sixth sense to warn you of hidden danger? The odds are you would go out of your ever-lovin’ mind, which is nearly what happened to teenager Peter Parker in April, 1963, when the Marvel Comics people created this unusual set of circumstances for their fictional lad. But is he fictional? Like so many of us, Petey’s everyday problems have a way of getting tangled up with his storybook powers. If nothing else, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has helped add huge circulation gains to the Marvel Comics balance sheet. He is one of a host of costumed characters who have caught on with teen-agers and college students as well as youngsters and young adults. This album is the first in a series matching Marvel with music, so be sure to collect them all. If you don’t, WHAM! SOK! KLONG!

On the east side of Harlem’s 125th street is a club extravagantly called, The Purple Manor. The atmos• phere is one of dominant-unpretentious down-to earthi· ness. The patrons want to hear musicians with the ability to lay down a beat; currently they aren›t being disappointed: because vibist, Freddie McCoy is appearing! Freddie’s talent is of such versatility that he can glide through ballads; swing on up-tempos; and amen with the blues all aided by a pleasing sound! If you’re ever lucky enough to meet, and get into a conversation with McCoy’s very good friend (who’ll simply introduce himself with, “I’m Ted”), you’ll learn some very interesting things about Freddie McCoy. Ted (a former bassist) is impressive when he says, “I first met Freddie when his father-in-law hired me to move a washing machine. Freddie told everyone politely that he couldn’t help; he had to watch his hands: ‘I’m a musician’! he said. Ted enjoys discussing the results of McCoy’s ‘creative urge’ “He lived in this cold-water flat ... Wanted a chandelier, but couldn’t afford one. So he stripped an old umbrella, white-taped the spokes, turned it upside down, and nailed the handle to the ceiling.” Then he chuckles and says playfully, “He’s very quaint!” Meeting Freddie, is a pleasure. He’s a very articulate and well-mannered person. His biographical sketch delivery is brief, but concise. While taking occasional puffs from his pipe he’ll tell you casually “I’m from New York. I was interested in music as a kid, but loved aviation more: so, I went into it. I had to leave though, because of an eye affliction.” “ ... I seriously entered music in ‘58. Drums were my interest but I couldn’t overcome the urge to play melody in the front line, so I searched for another instru-

ment. After hearing Milt Jackson I decided to play vibes. (As you can hear some of my things are very rhythmical, because I played drums.) “Even though vibes is my vehicle and I respect those vibists who came before me, and also my contemporaries, I know and like to feel that I have my own thing! As you’ll hear on my (this) album I was striving for a persona I and spirituaI type sound.” Vocalist Pat Thomas (of Desifinado fame who came in to sit-in with the group at the Manor) smiled as she listened saying, “Musicianship!” And that’s what Freddie McCoy says he wants to be involved with! In bassist, Steve Davis, McCoy not only has a close friend but a man who’s supported James Moody, John Coltrane, and Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison ... extremely well. Steve is from Philly and started music in high school after being inspired by his brother, also a bass player. Charlie Wilson is one of those rare ones, the selfmade musician. His interest was first kindled in music by his mother who was a professional singer. She was on the Daily Baily Goss show televised from his native Baltimore for a while and through watching other pianists, then practicing (starting in High School) he became acquainted with his instrument. Beginning serious study in ‘59 (after coming to N.Y. in ‘57) he eventually worked with Illinois Jacquet, Big Nick Nicholas, and then had his own trio for about four years. “I don’t consider myself a jazz pianist,” Wilson will tell you with glimpses. of the daring of youth (he’s 26). I’m concerned with melody like a singer. Every note that’s played should have feeling: even a scale.” Rudy Lawless is one of those people that causes the statement, “Oh! Everyone knows Rudy!”, to be used. He is also a New Yorker like McCoy; is in his early thirties; and a veteran, playing around N.Y. steadily for some time. Freddie sums this capable percussionist up with, “He’s just beautiful people, Man!” Hav’ Mercy is a real church type tune. And the rhythm, particularly the piano is reminiscent of those in many Harlem houses of worship. (Note the tambourine). Freddie says, “The Vamp on the end takes you to church. Reminded me of Daddy Graces’ on 125th street and 8th Avenue.” Yesterdays is a tune that allows McCoy to demonstrate his flair for ballads. There are tasteful cymbal rolls that changes mood sequences well. Davis, Wilson, and Lawless are working close together for effective backing. Wilson shows fine chordal and arpeggio approaches. The Girl From lpanema—lt is a clear McCoy and his men aren’t confined to one style area from this effort. The rhythm parts and McCoy’s line contribution makes pleasant what could’ve been a commercial nightmare.

The fact that this 1966 session from vibist Freddie McCoy sports one of the greatest album covers ever is only one of the many things it has going for it. It’s a cool jazz/soul jazz classic featuring Freddie with a killer band of Steve Davis on bass, Rudy Lawless on drums, and Charlie Wilson on piano, laying down some tight grooves on such tracks as “Speak Out, Deagan!” and “Hav’ Mercy” (Freddie’s vibe tones in particular will have you, ahem, tingling). Adding to the intrigue is the copy on the back cover, which claims that Spider Man was to be the first of a series of Marvel tie-in records. That this album turned out to be the only one leads one to suspect that the deal between Marvel and the Prestige label might have been hastily arranged…after all, the original labels still had the title as Hav’ Mercy. At any rate, it’s a bona-fide collectible and a lovely listen to boot, which we’re bringing to you in an ALL-ANALOG pressing either in clear with red and blue “Spidey” swirl vinyl or good, ol’-fashioned black. 60th anniversary release, first-ever vinyl reissue! Year of the Spider (Remastered Clear with Red & Black Swirl Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: OCTOBER 16, 2026 The third time was the charm for Cold, as album #3 went to #3 on the charts. Vocalist Scooter Ward was always (and still is) the band’s biggest asset, so Year of the Spider’s move in a more melodic direction worked both artistically and commercially, even landing them a hit single (“Stupid Girl,” co-written with Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo). But take a closer listen, and the emotional depth and vulnerability of Ward’s lyrics really do set Cold apart from its grunge and nu-metal contemporaries. And who doesn’t relate to a song called “Kill the Music Industry?!” We’ve had this 2003 smash remastered for vinyl, and pressed it in clear with red and black swirl vinyl nestled inside a gatefold jacket. STREET DATE: OCTOBER 16, 2026 The notion of an avantgarde supergroup is kinda counterintuitive…who gets rich and famous playing music miles away from the mainstream? But if there was ever a group to lay claim to the mantle, the suitably named outfit GOD would be it. Check out this lineup: saxophonist/composer extraordinaire, Tzadik label owner and Lower East Side legend John Zorn, saxophonist, clarinetist, and founding member of Henry Cow Tim Hodgkinson, multi-instrumentalist and London music scene fixture Steve Blake, British avant-garde guitarist Gary Smith, experimental music mogul Kevin Martin, multi-instrumentalist and producer Justin K Broadrick of Napalm Death and Godflesh fame, double bass player and Evan Parker bandmate John Edwards, Laika drummer Lou Ciccotelli…the list goes on. Together, GOD made a holy racket worthy of its fine and varied pedigree on its 1992 debut album Possession, to which we suppose the term “industrial jazz” could be applied. It’s a mixture of crushing chords that wouldn’t be out of place on a Swans album with free jazz skronk reminiscent of early ‘70s Miles at his most atonal, punctuated by unexpected moments of fragile beauty. And yet, it swings! This firstever LP release comes remastered for the format in double-barreled tan smoke vinyl housed inside a gatefold jacket. An intense, rewarding listen that lives up to its cult classic status.

We’re not joking…and neither is Vincent Price. The star of such horror classics as House of Wax, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and Theatre of Blood (and, of course, narrator of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video) can barely hide his delight while he takes his audience through a graphic and occasionally grisly history lesson in witchcraft from the Bible through the Middle Ages, the Spanish Inquisition, and Nazi Germany. Then, accompanied by occasional eerie, abstract electronic music, Price’s sinister satisfaction only mounts as he provides instruction in the dark arts, with such tracks as “How to Make a Pact with the Devil” and “Curses, Spells, Charms.” It’s all in good fun, of course…or is it? The mysterious writer of the script, one Terry d’Oberoff, has only one other credit to his name: as the “mascot” of an early ‘70s band called…wait for it…Black Magic. This 1969 double-LP release has long been coveted by collectors of the curious and macabre, and we are giving it the Real Gone treatment, reproducing the gatefold jacket and the full-size, 8-page booklet that accompanied some copies. It’s a combination history textbook and how-to manual in witchcraft, with a title page depicting a particularly unsettling spell called “The Hand of Glory” involving the severed, salted, and dried hand of a convicted felon. We are releasing this one-of-a-kind album on flickering orange flame PET plastic that just might hypnotize you when you spin it… Happy Halloween to those who celebrate.

BIBIO & DORIAN CONCEPT | ANSWERS

OVERVIEW Longtime friends Bibio and Dorian Concept reunite for Answers, a collaborative instrumental album set for release on October 16th. Having known each other for over a decade, the pair build on a natural creative rapport shaped through recent joint efforts - including Bibio’s rework of Dorian Concept’s “Hide” (2024) and their track “An Unopened Letter”, the closer on Dorian Concept’s latest album Miniatures (2025). Much of Answers was developed remotely, with ideas passed back and forth between Wales and Austria, reflecting both artists’ preference for solitary, process-driven creation. Bibio, an English producer known for blending folk, ambient, and lo-fi tape textures, brings his tactile, guitar-led warmth, while Vienna’s Dorian Concept, a self-taught keyboardist and synth improviser, contributes his fluid, exploratory approach to electronic composition. Alongside the music, the duo collaborated closely on the album’s visual world, creating video and artwork together, informed by a shared love of vintage cameras and visual play.

The result is an instrumental album full of texture that feels less like a debut collaboration and more like a continuation: two distinct voices meeting in a shared language shaped over years of mutual influence and quiet experimentation.

Press “Their chemistry as musicians is undeniable...bouncing off of each other in indelible harmonies, trading off ideas in a free-flowing, effortless way. They channel early Animal Collective, the Beatles, freak-folk, and beyond in their songs, which are warm and inviting and have an ineffable homespun charm.” —Stereogum “In its most minimalist form @’s music is quietly transfixing, flowing slowly and with intent through the thick and humid air.” — The Quietus “@ present a winsome hybrid of melodic acoustic songwriting, ambitious arrangements, and the type of smart, lo-fi chamber pop that harkens back to the Elephant 6 Collective’s more ornate side.” — All Music

Though now based in Philadelphia, Victoria and Stone continue their distinctive songwriting process: working independently before completing each other’s compositions. Recorded largely at home with a humble collection of equipment and enriched by contributions from close friends on cello, violin, and drums, Autosmile transforms lo-fi methods into something remarkably lush, immersive, and emotionally resonant. Across eleven songs, @ balance darkness and wonder with striking confidence. The album moves effortlessly between haunting folk textures, progressive flourishes, indie-pop hooks, and moments of cinematic beauty. Highlights include the expansive title track “Autosmile,” the nostalgic earworm “I Know You Are (But What Am I Thinking),” and the intricately arranged “Punish My Mind,” each exploring themes of change, selfreflection, loss, and acceptance through lyrics that remain deliberately open-ended and deeply relatable. Equal parts mysterious, virtuosic, and playful, Autosmile showcases @ at their most fully realized—an adventurous partnership capable of looking backward and forward at once. It is an album of contrasts: beauty and pain, humor and gravity, intimacy and ambition. In the face of uncertainty, @ offer curiosity, connection, and the possibility of transformation.

: DjRUM DjRUM is one of the most revered DJs of his generation and also a virtuoso musician and producer, but he’s a long, long way from what most people would imagine when they see the words “DJ/producer”. His all-vinyl, three-deck DJ sets, while technically expert, are spontaneous, sometimes extreme and hardcore, unafraid to make stylistic and sonic handbrake turns, “I like things to be a bit bumpy,” as he puts it; “to have ups and downs and f*ck with expectations!” His productions, on the other hand, are lovingly and meticulously structured – he describes his process in the studio as “meditational” – and even when they, too, reject genre boundaries or ramp up tempos and bass, the finesse is the point: they’re as close to post-classical composition as they are to rave tracks as such. This mix is the moment where he brings together all the elements that have made him what he is, and becomes a more integrated musical whole than ever before. As a basis he composed four new pieces which move between different sonic registers, and asked likeminded experimentalists Skee Mask and Clark for exclusives “Flip” and “Clonk Dual”, using these as coordinates to map out the mix. Rather than get into the painstaking headspace he used for building tracks, he let himself take the free, first-thought-best-thought feeling of DJing into the studio, knowing that the cerebral work had already gone into the track selection. He mixed vinyl live, then chopped up those mixes, collaged and overdubbed them, conscious of not trying too hard, but working it until it felt right. Ambient and breakcore, classical and punk, deep acid and chaotic percussion flow into a river of sound on this mix. It has the kind of elegance that only someone who’s put in billions of sweaty rave moments holding utter chaos just in check can manage, it joins together things that should never work with uncanny perfection, and then moments later knocks you sideways with a ragged cut or foolish sample. You’ll never quite know if this is the DjRUM of the lawless derelict building party full of punks and freaks, or the DjRUM who will sit at home sculpting a single minute-long string ensemble recording until it perfectly matches his conceptual vision. Because, of course, it’s both, the whole time and his DJ-Kicks mix connects these two modes of expression. He was always both, and on this mix, he’s shed both skins, and – once again – become himself.

Following their acclaimed 2024 debut, UK electronic duo Two Shell return with Infinite Now, a reminder of the fundamental power of dance music, the sugar-rush of abandon that comes when you lose yourself to it all and remain in the moment. It’s a celebration of the basic reason that dance music exists: instead of asking listeners to understand what’s happening and make sense of it, Infinite Now asks them to hold on and feel it. It’s still layered, there’s still complexity to the production but it’s just not that deep. The vaporized vocalists you hear across Infinite Now are unnamed and sound like they’ve beamed down from another dimension – ghosts in the machine. In Two Shell’s own words, “Music doesnʼt need to be solved, it just needs to be experienced.”

Brian Auger & The Trinity Befour Strut presents the final album by Brian Auger & The Trinity, 1970's Befour. Befour marked the final chapter of Brian Auger's celebrated Trinity era before he launched Oblivion Express, bringing to a close several years of exploring and refining his distinctive blend of jazz-rock, Hammond soul and prog elements. Drawing on the band's wide-ranging influences, the album is built around inspired reinterpretations that showcase the band’s virtuosity and adventurous spirit. Sly & The Family Stone's "I Wanna Take You Higher" is transformed into a full strength jazz-rock workout, while "Pavane", adapted from Gabriel Fauré's celebrated classical composition, highlights Auger's gift for seamlessly blending classical and contemporary influences. Elsewhere, the album features one of the greatest and most inventive covers of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage", and Traffic's "No Time to Live" features a standout vocal performance from guitarist Gary Boyle. Although Befour reached the Billboard charts on its original release, it has remained one of the lesser-known albums in the Trinity catalogue. Over time, however, it has earned cult status among early jazz fusion fans and is now regarded by critics as one of the defining British jazz-rock recordings of the era, arriving just before jazz fusion emerged as a major force during the 1970s. Today, Befour stands as both a fitting conclusion to the Trinity years and an important bridge between the psychedelic soul of Auger's work with Julie Driscoll and the more exploratory, funk-driven direction of Oblivion Express. Rich in musicianship and forward-thinking arrangements, it remains one of the most rewarding albums in Auger's catalogue.

Tropical Fuck Storm – Inflatable Graveyard Vol. 2

. Tropical Fu*k Storm revisit the live album concept on ‘Inflatable Graveyard Vol. 2’, their second live album and the follow-up to the critically acclaimed ‘Fairyland Codex’. Recorded over three nights during a sold-out residency at New York venue TV Eye, the album finds the band at the height of their incendiary powers, turning already combustible songs into something even more ferocious and unpredictable.

Fine-tuned and road-tested through heavy touring, songs from ‘Fairyland Codex’ are stretched into new forms. Ballad “Stepping on a Rake” takes on heavier undertones, “Irukandji Syndrome” becomes a launchpad for a guitar solo worthy of the Velvets’ “I Heard Her Call My Name” and “Moscovium” sounds more urgent than ever.

Artist: Tropical Fuck Storm Title: Inflatable Graveyard Vol. 2 Release date: 2026-10-16 Label: Fire Records

The band also revisit back catalogue favourites including “Who’s My Eugene” and “You Let My Tyres Down”, alongside a cover of Australian punk heroes The Saints’ “This Perfect Day”.

Tropical Fu*k Storm have built a catalogue worth obsessing over, but their live show is where the band’s brilliance really breaks open, and ‘Inflatable Graveyard Vol. 2’ catches that chaos in the act.

Jack Wyllie, a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and co-founder of the Mercury Prize–nominated Portico Quartet, debuts under his own name. The album radiates hope, mirroring nature’s beauty and cyclical rhythms while weaving through contemporary jazz, ambient, classical, and post-rock. Collaborators include Hania Rani and Duncan Bellamy. Jack Wyllie, saxophonist, flautist and composer, is perhaps best known as the co-founder of Mercury Prize nominated wide-screen minimalists Portico Quartet and as 1/3 of revelatory, ambient improvising trio Szun Waves, but his distinctive voice on flute, soprano and tenor saxophones marks him out as a key figure in contemporary music. A keen collaborator whose projects have drawn on ambient, Fourth-world, electronica and modern classical influences, Eternal Spring is the first recording under his own name. Eternal Spring, which features collaborators as diverse as erstwhile Portico Quartet band mates drummer Duncan Bellamy and bassist Milo Fitzpatrick, iconoclastic Polish artist Hania Rani, cellist Dobrawa Czocher and Australian mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean, draws inspiration from both Wyllie’s love of verdant nature but also the idea of a constant, flickering sense of hope and his compositions balance elevating melodies and cyclical rhythms while unashamedly reaching for something hopeful and beautiful. Shimmering, rippling, budding and blossoming, though still appealingly familiar, it’s clear that with Eternal Spring Wyllie has crafted one of those rare records that reveal the magic all around us by removing us from our circumstances. Whether welcoming a new day or painting night skies, Eternal Spring celebrates life as well as its cyclical nature. Indeed, this music not only demanded the title for itself, but also demanded Wyllie use his given name. “I realised I’m ready to own it,” he adds. As likely to provoke references to ambient and jazz as classical and even postrock, what unites it is an essential, bucolic sense of renewal and replenishment. That, and a willing embrace of multiple touchstones, from John Adams to John Surman, from Ryuichi Sakamoto to James Holden. He even acknowledges Keith Jarret’s Arbour Zena, recorded with Jan Garbarek and Charlie Haden, as well as a kinship with South Korean director Kim Ki-duk’s serene Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. Having mapped out his compositions with pianos and synths, Wyllie conspired on their nascent rhythms with Portico Quartet drummer Duncan Bellamy, finding peace in his restorative intentions before expanding into sessions at a church, Saint Thomas Clapton, another at Max Richter’s Studio Richter Mahr, and a final day at London’s Fish Factory. . “It was like I’d found a natural space between all my projects,” he says, “something I could hone in on.” This then is Eternal Spring, where wonders will never cease. But it’s also Jack Wyllie’s first solo album. He’s proud to put his name to it. Pressed on high quality black BioVinyl at Optimal in Germany for maximum sound quality.

Johnstonsons

Hard II Impersonate Detroit duo Johnstonsons — John River and Stonny Moon, lifelong friends operating under a band name that reads like a Lynchian fake ID — have spent three years figuring out which version of themselves they actually wanted to make a record as. The name sounds more like a CB handle or a landscaping company than a synth-pop band, which is exactly what lets the actual record sneak up on you. Their debut LP for à La Carte Records, “Hard II Impersonate,” makes the gap between expectation and execution into part of the pleasure — by the first chorus, what the band is called stops mattering and what they sound like takes over. The title doubles as a working principle. River and Moon got two full records’ worth of material into this album before tearing both up — twice — when the songs landed too close to what someone else might make. “Hard II Impersonate” is the third pass and the first one that survives that test: a debut that only Johnstonsons could plausibly have written. The lyrics follow the same logic, trading the cryptic for something more direct and less defensive — the kind of plainspoken vulnerability that’s harder to fake than metaphor. Sonically, the record draws on the cinematic emotional reach of Tears for Fears, the

Genres: New Wave, Synth-Pop RIYL: Tears For Fears, Talk Talk, Body of Light

patient spaciousness Talk Talk worked into the seams of their best arrangements, and the contemporary discipline of Body of Light — songs that trust a held note before they sell you anything. Guitars soar without grandstanding, synths breathe, and vocal hooks lock in fast and stay. Tracks like “Impersonate,” “Change,” and “Feel This Way” emerged from a punishing stretch of winter sessions in the duo’s warehouse studio and ended up defining the record’s center of gravity: hooky, immediate, alert to its own emotional cost. Production duties were shared with Trey Frye of Korine, a meaningful collaboration given both projects’ instinct for warmth inside a frame that could otherwise go brittle. Frye mixed and mastered the LP, and his fingerprints show up most in how unhurried the record feels even when the choruses arrive at full sprint. Cover art by Carrie Pitzer; design and layout by Shawn Martin. “Hard II Impersonate” arrives on two limited 12” vinyl variants — neon violent in clear and violet — and across all digital platforms. It is, finally, the sound of two friends agreeing on what they sound like and refusing to negotiate further.

Kaoru Watanabe—The Arch Created in deep collaboration with Grammy-Award Winning producer William Brittelle, alongside executive producer Shahzad Ismaily, over the course of a year at Figure 8 as part of its Open Residency program, The Arch is a cathartic celebration of a life in music, of transformation and self discovery. The collaboration with Brittelle, who encouraged Watanabe to dig deep into his personal musical history, opened the floodgates for Watanabe and to use all of the tools at his disposal during the creation of the album. He explains, "William opened things up for me and encouraged me to put everything on the table. I began to experiment with sounds, instruments, and compositional tools I normally would not have. This process really allowed me to explore the entirety of my musical being."

Across the 10 tracks on the record, Watanabe places the vibrant timbres of traditional Japanese instruments (shinobue and ryuteki flutes, taiko drums, narimono percussion instruments, and koto, a 13-string zither) in compositions and jazz improvisations. These traditional instruments are contrasted by the many layers of acoustic and electronic instruments—piano, synthesizers, tenor saxophone, soprano and alto flutes, and harp, all played by Watanabe— which he uses to create a unique and shifting soundworld, never quite settling in one place or time but buoyed by his singular artistic vision.

Winter McQuinn & Acacia Pip Disassociating On The Travelator (Double EP) Cat #: TES050 Side A 1. Exactly The Same 2. Slow Lane 3. Say What You Do 4. Frankenstein

BLURB

Long-time collaborators Winter McQuinn (Sunfruits, Beefheart & McQuinn, jade imagine) and Acacia Pip (PINCH POINTS, Slush) return with Disassociating On The Travelator, the beautifully understated second EP from one of Melbourne’s most compelling songwriting partnerships. The vinyl edition arrives as a special double EP alongside the duo’s acclaimed 2024 debut EP, Recently I’ve Been Missing The Colour Green. Recorded at the legendary Bakehouse Studios with acclaimed songwriter and producer Liam “Snowy” Halliwell, the four-track collection expands on the warm indie folk, jangling guitar pop and folk-emo leanings of the duo’s 2024 debut. Across four intimate songs, McQuinn and Pip reflect on the quiet complexities of contemporary life—trying to make sense of changing relationships, the passing of time, self-doubt and finding happiness in everyday moments. “Our songs are very much internal monologue ramblings, reflecting on (and trying to make sense of) our feelings, lives and the world around us. With both of our EPs, we wanted to keep things natural and fun and just lean into each other’s strengths. We tried to not overthink the songs, letting them come together naturally and embracing the humanness of keeping things not too perfect.” — McQuinn & Pip

Side B (BONUS EP) 1. Working On Me 2. Crack The Plates 3. Summer Rain 4. Passenger Seat 5. Let The Grass Grow 6. Trash Trees

PRESS QUOTES “(McQuinn & Pip) deliver a winning combo of sun-blissed hooky pop and sharp observations, warm melodies and slacker cool” — Camilla Aisa (Shindig Magazine) “The duo turns down the volume and leans into the strums and easy amble…albeit with a bit of a modern Aussie angle. ”Working On Me” is a sunny stunner, paired with a homespun video that captures the song’s bucolic sway that portions them slung between Courtney Barnett and Real Estate.” — Raven Sings The Blues

PETRELS INFANGTHIEF

Formats: UPC · Box Lot LP (clear) 634457144088 · 10 CD 634457144071 · 30 125 clear black smoke vinyl reserved for Redeye Tracklist: 01. Fishes 02. The Hungry God 03. Giants 04. Owning A River 05. Killing Of The Divine King 06. Belenos 07. Speenhamland 08. Variegated Fairy Wren Seven years after 2019’s ‘The Dusk Loom’, Petrels finally returns with a pair of new albums, Infangthief and Outfangthief. The first of these releases, Infangthief, was originally written and recorded in 2022, before being reworked in light of a subsequent album, Outfangthief, due to be released later this year. The two albums act as companion pieces, mirrors revealing facets of the other, overlapping in sound and subject matter. Though Outfangthief may have been written after Infangthief, it is no mere follow-up, with it‘s own creation causing a re-visiting and re-working of the earlier album, which in turn informed the writing of its twin. Taking their titles from Old English legal terms („thief seized without“ and „thief seized within”), the central thread running through both albums is the illusion of assumed human authority - that which is given and that which is taken by force. With Western society seemingly hellbent on willingly embracing a brutally destructive economic model (even in its death throes), these albums attempt - in their own small way - to undertake the essential task of imagining alternative ways of being. Petrels is the solo project of musician and artist, Oliver Barrett. Since releasing his debut, Haeligewielle, in 2011 (#9 in A Closer Listen‘s Best Albums of the Decade), Petrels has toured across Europe and shared a stage with the likes of Jóhann Jóhannsson, Tim Hecker, FIRE!, Nate Young (Wolf Eyes), Trouble Books, Demdike Stare, Nadja, and Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster). Working from his home in Somerset, UK, Barrett has released numerous albums through his Floating Limb imprint, as well as mixing and/or mastering hundreds of releases for the likes of Keiji Haino, Loren Connors & Alan Licht, Judith Hamann, Incapacitants, Mette Rasmussen & Sofia Jernberg, Yasunao Tone and more “Petrels sidesteps the chilliness found in much of the music of his peers, replacing it instead with an almost spiritual ecstasy, his ravishing synths and almost choral vocal treatments calling out in cosmic, wide eyed wonder at the universe.” – Paul Margree, Louder Than War Also available: den320 Petrels · The Dusk Loom 4059251334095 (CD) · 4059251334071 (LP) den266 Petrels · Jörð 4059251012542 (CD) · 4059251012559 (LP) den232 Petrels · Flailing Tomb 4024572821388 (CD) · 4024572821371 (LP) den197 Petrels ·The Silver Chimney Club / Wat Tyler 4024572702335 (CD) · 4024572702328 (LP) den194 Petrels · Mima 4024572665494 (CD) · 4024572665487 (LP) den164 Petrels · Onkalo 4024572591670 (CD) · 4024572591663 (LP) den120 Petrels · All Things In Common 4024572520250 (LP) den119 Petrels · Haeligewielle 4024572520243 (CD) · 4024572520236 (LP)

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Chicago label finding the fun in experimental music since 2012

Kill Alters returns to Hausu Mountain with We Can Rot Together, the project’s third album in the label’s catalog following Armed to the Teeth L.M.O.M.M. and No Self Helps. Spearheaded by Bonnie Baxter since the project’s inception, Kill Alters has previously featured drummer Hisham Bharoocha (Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, Boredoms) and Baxter’s husband Nicos Kennedy (a frequent collaborator of Machine Girl, Femtanyl, and Lustsickpuppy) as performing band members. In its most recent configuration, Kill Alters has shifted to focus on Baxter as the composer, producer, and lead vocalist propelling her ballistic solo work from a command center of hardware and software instruments - with Kennedy handling the mixing and mastering of Baxter’s music. Bonnie Baxter’s work has appeared in the HausMo catalog on two solo albums under her given name, and on five releases as half of the duo Prolaps with Machine Girl’s Matt Stephenson. On We Can Rot Together, Baxter offers us a thrilling program of her most direct and dancefloor ready bangers under the Kill Alters umbrella to date as she channels energy from various flavors of 90s-to-Y2K-era rave music. She has honed her practice both as a sculptor of polyrhythmic webs of technoid electronics and as a frontwoman shapeshifting on a dime through diverse vocal styles and personas. As with all Kill Alters music, Baxter weaves archival recordings of her own childhood and her upbringing with her mother into the chaos of We Can Rot Together - yet the tenor of these diaristic flashes has shifted from cathartic self-examination into the realm of celebration. As we hear flashes of Baxter singing karaoke as a child and her mom Cat #: HAUSMO 159 brashly proclaiming “I’m gonna dance,” we get in the spirit with them; we Artist: Kill Alters get on the floor and we headbang to the sounds that Baxter has conjured Album: We Can Rot Together Formats: CD, Tape for us. Label: Hausu Mountain Though elements of the cybernetic digi-hardcore of Kill Alters’ previous CD Edition Tape Edition output still animate We Can Rot Together, Baxter’s production In a 4-panel digipak C50 - red tape - 4 panel J-Card foregrounds a foundation of mutated house, trance, and techno - all styles that informed her musical development as a teenager, just as they continue to inspire a wide cross-section of pop and dance music today. The album throbs with four-on-the-floor kick patterns and jittering saw “Listening to the maddening and momentous work of Kill wave synth lines, squelching acid basslines and synthetic orchestral stabs. Alters could inspire you to either laugh or scream. Both reactions are welcome—and are often returned by bandleader By sampling her own voice and threading it into the din using the same program as her production elements, the line between Baxter as Bonnie Baxter, who performs with an ecstatic intensity that producer and Baxter as vocalist vanishes, giving way to a sense of outblurs the two extremes.” - Bandcamp Daily of-body rave abandon. When she covers Ian Van Dahl’s 2002 trance “Serenity gets ruptured by drill ’n’ bass seguing into happy anthem “Castles in the Sky” at the album’s midpoint, the song blends hardcore, summoning a rave riddled with emergency perfectly into its surroundings, its euphoric pop toplines and zigzagging broadcast system signals. For Baxter, nothing is sacred, arpeggios urging us to drop out of time and into the zone. As Baxter everything is permitted. I feel drugged and dragged.” peppers her lyrics with quotes from 90s dance-pop hits alongside her - The Wire own surreal wordplay, the feeling of eras colliding and time folding onto itself thickens, as if We Can Rot Together were an unmarked cassette you found in an alley whose provenance you can’t quite pin down even after popping it into the tape deck. Bonnie Baxter envisioned We Can Rot Together as an auditory incarnation of the constant deluge of information and digital detritus that washes over us as we interact with the internet and the modern world at large. As her voice shifts between registers, at times rising into chirped chipmunk melodies or sinking into demure spoken-word proclamations, we feel as if we’re being led through a dystopian landscape by a disembodied iOS avatar. The fast-chopped clatter of her vocal lines speeds by us like a barrage of memes and short form videos on the feed, with catchphrases like “let’s fucking go!” and “get your ass on the floor!” repeating as spammed mantras à la high-BPM dance styles like footwork or Jersey club. Baxter wants to make it clear that her goal with We Can Rot Together isn’t to “make a panacea for these dark days,” as we’ve heard so many times before, but rather to lean into the senseless humor of that darkness. Her music reflects the absurdity of the “brain rot” that encroaches on our tooplugged-in society, and she channels the signifiers of those mind-melting media forms to create a parallel escape into rot of her own devising. We might all be worn down by infinite stimuli, but it feels better when we stare into the digital abyss together.
