How did you personally get started in the music industry?

John Carlin’s entry into the music industry began with his background as a curator, professor, and art writer, which led him to cofound the non-profit Red Hot Organization in 1989 to raise money for AIDS charities. His work with Red Hot, which used music and art to fundraise, gave him extensive experience and connections in the music and film worlds, and his involvement in projects like Red Hot + Blue established his reputation as a powerful industry figure.

When and where did the label begin?

New York City circa 1990.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area?

Our projects gather artists from all over the world. We like to use our releases to educate people on health crises and solutions in specific areas, and have done that with our Red Hot + Rio series (Brazil), and Red Hot + Riot (Africa). Red Hot still has a New York spirit about it that does run through our releases – politically speaking we’re tuned in to the New York pulse of things.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

We’ll say the style is ~luminary. Our albums have gathered the most progressive minds in hip-hop, experimental jazz, bossa nova, folk, indie rock, and ambient music. Most artists on Red Hot records are interested in eclipsing pre-conceived notions of genre. We like to find what’s happening in the moment.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

Red meant anger and blue meant sadness when Red Hot + Blue was born in 1990. Our friends were dying of AIDS in New York. Anger is motivation.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? It would be called TRANSA and it would be geared toward the music trans people are making that later defines what’s popular. (We are kind of doing this with the TRANSA universe. There’s another album on the way.)

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When the label began, it was possible for us to use music to raise large amounts of money to get people access to healthcare. Now we are focused on raising awareness with our music and using each release as a way to galvanize artists and others who care about the same things we do.

What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?

Finding funds to keep the label running was and is the greatest challenge.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

There is no average. Everyone’s a freak. But really – people who cherish deep cuts, people who are offbeat, deep listeners. We have to take up the counterculture.

Where do you go to search for new music?

We talk a lot about the state of music journalism, and are always looking for more outlets like the Hearing Things, the project of Pitchfork exiles. And we’re lucky to work with interns who make our world bigger with recs and exciting leads.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

The best marketing or promotion was not being able to use Nirvana’s name for No Alternative. It basically drove the project to have the secret Nirvana track in 1993 at the height of their fame.

If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?

We really want to use disruptive ways outside of the traditional digital marketing avenues to promote our releases. One example would be an art campaign for public transit stations; collaborating with fashion brands is also very aligned with what we’re working on.

What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?

John Carlin: The Talking Heads album Speaking in Tongues (featuring Robert Rauschenberg’s collage on clear discs – in a transparent plastic case not unlike TRANSA’s case.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

Vinyl is a way to treasure music. People still respond to that. CDs are items of nostalgia for Gen Z listeners.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

The way to market music in public has completely changed. We put campaigns on billboards in the early ‘90s and ran TV specials that people could stumble upon. Listeners curate their own experiences now and the ability to stumble upon music and art outside of one’s comfort zone is hard to come by. We are looking for new ways to do this.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered?

We want to be remembered for making great music for a great cause. We’re pleasantly surprised that people remember what we did make, many worlds ago.

Kelan Phil Cohran was a member of the pioneering afrofuturist Sun Ra Arkestra and appears on several of their most acclaimed recordings. He released several albums of his own compositions in the 1960s with his band The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, including a revelatory tribute to Malcom X – a well-known collectible for jazz aficionados.

Cohr an was a mentor to artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan and The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a Chicago-based brass band whose members included 8 of his sons

Pressed in the US on 180-gram black vinyl with OBI strip and laminated Stoughton Tipon gatefold jacket. A four-page insert includes newly unearthed photos from the Cohran family and original program notes from the Adler Planetarium.

A 16-track live album documenting the rebirth of Death Cult January

16th, 2026

Death Cult laid the groundwork for the band we now know as The Cult, and in 2023, to mark the band’s 40th anniversary, Ian Astbury & Billy Duffy, along with John Tempesta on drums and Charlie Jones on bass, revived Death Cult for a special run of shows.

Out on January 16th, 2026, PARADISE LIVE is a 16-track live album that documents this rebirth of Death Cult. Recorded at the iconic Albert Hall in Duffy’s hometown of Manchester on November 18th, 2023, the release will be available on double LP, CD and digitally.

As New Noise Magazine wrote, “Ian and Duffy are brothers in musical cause and are counterparts to a quintessential era of Gothic New Wave or First Wave, Camden-era punk. Death Cult were the brothers of the Clash and Siouxie and The Banshees. They were in the scene. And now they are progenitors of alternative music from Los Angeles.”

The Cult’s first incarnation was Southern Death Cult, formed in 1981, releasing their sole, self-titled album posthumously in 1983. That same year, Death Cult formed, with Ian Astbury joining forces with Billy Duffy for a musical partnership that has endured for 40+ years. Death Cult became The Cult in 1984 releasing Dreamtime that same year.

Ian and Billy initially weren’t sure how many shows they would do as Death Cult, but the shamanic post-punk gothic futurists decided to listen to the requests to keep the fervor going.

The Cult has gone on to sell more than four million albums with numerous international and U.S. gold and platinum certifications. Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy have released 11 studio albums over The Cult’s 40-year career. The band found international renown with the 1985 album, Love, which featured the enduring rock anthem “She Sells Sanctuary,” as well as the iconic follow-up single “Rain.” Electric arrived in 1987, with Rolling Stone saying the collection of songs (particularly “Love Removal Machine,” “Wild Flower” and “Lil’ Devil”) “swaggers, crunches and howls.” Most recently, The Cult released Under the Midnight Sun. Mojo, in a review of the eight-song album, said “rock’s unquenchable melodramatists have the fire in their eyes still”.

From the heart of Tamanrasset in South Algeria, Imarhan transcend Tuareg tradition, weaving hypnotic synths into desert blues. The result is a timeless work—deeply respectful of their roots, yet alive with a stirring sense of modernity.

ESSAM is the band’s fourth album, recorded with the same core lineup, but marks a significant shift in their sound and approach. Musically, it marks a departure from the rocky, bluesy, psychedelic Tuareg guitar-driven sound influenced by Tinariwen’s heritage — moving toward something more open, modern, and exploratory.

For the first time, their long-time sound engineer Maxime Kosinetz stepped in as producer. He travelled to Tamanrasset with Emile Papandreou (of the French duo UTO), a multi-instrumentalist who introduced electronic elements by sampling live instruments and reprocessing them in real time with a modular synthesizer — subtly reshaping the band‘s sonic identity.

Cabin Fever was originally released in 2012 and features fan favorite songs like “Gettin’ Down On The Mountain” and “Bible On The Dash” which are staples in his live show to this day. This masterpiece by Canadian singer-songwriter Corb Lund, that finally allowed Corb to break through with a global audience, will be back finally back in print with a bonus disc that features an acoustic version of the album. “Cabin Fever might be the best record I’ve ever made. Good batch of songs, written largely south of Austin. Pretty solid album from start to finish and I really like the way it sounds, gritty and organic. Five Dollar Bill and Hair in My Eyes were my breakthrough records in Canada but are less known south of the border. This record is the one where American audiences began taking notice and to this day it’s full of live favourites,” said Lund.

This limited edition release is part of the Corb Lund - Dark Horses Club. New West Records will be releasing unreleased records and material from Corb Lund throughout 2025 and 2026.

Godzilla’s/Eatin’ Dust is the most popular release in Fu Manchu’s 30 year recorded history. It is the combination of what were originally 2 distinct 10” releases: Godzilla (1997) and Eatin’ Dust (1999).In 2018, Scott Hill (vocals/guitar) found the original tapes from the Godzilla recording sessions produced by Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age/Kyuss) and unearthed a secret that had been in his garage since 1996...The band had recorded 4 songs that had never been released. These extra songs are early versions of "Grendel, Snowman," "Strolling Astronomer" and "Urethane” (whose final versions appeared on 1997’s The Action Is Go) and a cover of Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak" (which is a different version than the one which was released on 7” in 1998).

In 2024, Fu Manchu released their 14th studio album, The Return of Tomorrow, and embarked on a world tour to bring the new music to the fans. The band felt that these shows and these songs would be special, so they recorded the performances. When they got home and listened, they were so inspired that they decided to release an album compiled from these shows. The Return Of…Live is their first official live album in 20 years and includes some fan favorites including “Eatin’ Dust” and “Hell On Wheels” along with “Loch Ness Wrecking Machine,”“Hands Of The Zodiac” and the title track of The Return Of Tomorrow.

Edenʼs Children sophomore album brings kaleidoscopic textures woven with bent blue notes and finger-squeaking sounds of folk guitar. Their fusion of jazz, psychedelia, and rock put them among the best of the late ʻ60s Bosstown Sound in New England. Sometimes referred to as New Englandʼs answer to Blue Cheer, the trioʼs second album shines through guitarist Richard Schamachʼs thoughtful lyrics. Paired with Jimmy Sturman on drums and Larry Kiley on bass, Sure Looks Real shimmers with impressive musicianship from the power trio. The CD includes two unissued acetate demos from Schamachʼs archives!

Sure Looks Real found the trio engaging in a gentler and less fuzz-drenched form of psychedelia. Although there are still Hendrix vibes on "Toasted" and "Spirit Call", this album shows Schamach and company aiming for a more understated beauty -- and achieving it. Although Sure Looks Real is less intense than its predecessor, it is no less fascinating. Schamach's guitar still dazzles on "Things Gone Wrong", "Call It Design", and the title track. The band revealed more jazz influence this time around, and were possibly adapting to the progressive rock movement that was underway. Sure Looks Real suggests that if this band had survived beyond the psychedelic era, they would have been capable of adjusting to new trends, and had the potential to create quite a distinguished body of work. But in reality, we only have the two existing Eden's Children albums to enjo-y.

Sidings is the third full-length double LP by Craven Faults, following 2020 debut Erratics & Unconformities and 2023’s Standers. These long-form releases have each been punctuated with shorter single disc albums – Enclosures at the end of 2020 and Bounds in 2024. Each one builds on Craven Faults’ lore and takes a unique view of the north of England through the spectrum of slowly unfurling analogue electronic music. It draws influence from the global underground of the arts and music, via records, studios and concerts, and how the landscape outside the old mill Craven Faults calls home came to look the way it does.

The journey on Sidings isn’t made with people in mind. It begins in an isolated community which built up around one of the great engineering projects of its age - 14 tunnels and 22 viaducts to open up the north - and finishes at an enclosed field on a moor in 1858. It takes in studios from Los Angeles to Rochdale from 1952 to 1980, while drawing inspiration from the progress in manmade infrastructure and the transport of goods.

The devil’s in the details. It always was and it always will be. It’s there for those who seek it out.

From Bach to Brahms, Mahler to Messiaen, any composer worth their salt has written for the pipe organ. And so when James McVinnie put the idea to Tristan Perich to write for the king of instruments, it was perhaps not a surprise that the New York contemporary-classical composer had already considered the possibilities of marrying his signature 1-bit electronic music with an instrument that has reverberated down the centuries.

Infinity Gradient is an hour-long symphony in seven movements for organ and 100 speakers in 1-bit audio, recorded for this album at London’s Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, where McVinnie was artist-in-residence throughout 2024. The 100 speakers are set across the stage – a recurring element in Perich’s work for over two decades, this time featuring four giant subwoofers, 24 mediumsized speakers, and 72 small speakers – against the backdrop of RFH’s imposing organ; the piece is as visually striking to look at as it is to listen to.

A remarkable work with few precedents, Infinity Gradient is a duet between two musical instruments, millennia apart in conception. Shot through with dynamism, it is a work of colour and contrasts which coalesce into a unique, transcendent whole.

The kernel of an idea for the project first came to McVinnie when he heard Vicky Chow perform Perich’s Surface Image – an earlier, hour long work for piano and 40 speakers – in Latvia in 2016. A celebrated organist who has collaborated with everyone from Philip Glass to Squarepusher, McVinnie was “bowled over by Surface Image” and immediately saw the potential for a similar work for organ, with its direct correlation to the philosophy behind Perich’s 1-bit electronics. “When you press down a key on a pipe organ, it lets air into the pipe, which creates sound. Each pipe is either in a state of making sound or being silent. There is no decay, nor any obvious change to the sound until the key is released.” The same is true of Perich’s 1-bit electronics, which use binary pulses of electricity to set a speaker cone into motion and create sound. McVinnie continues, “This shared ‘on-off’ binary element offers a kind of beautiful honesty to the work, which links with the emotional core of its musical form and narrative. Despite all of its complex technology – for me – the experience of Infinity Gradient is a supremely human one.”

Growing up, Perich’s primary instrument was the piano, though he also took a few lessons on pipe organ in elementary school and then, when he was at high school, he suddenly had access to one As impressive as that instrument might have been, there’s little doubt it would not be able to compete with the 7,866 pipes of the organ in the Royal Festival Hall. Designed by Ralph Downes and installed by Harrison & Harrison between 1950 and 1954, McVinnie describes it as a “kind of mid-century dreamhouse.” He adds: “Downes was not part of the church music establishment, and thus was not wedded to a status quo about how organs should sound and what their function should be. Above all, he felt the organ should be a vehicle for its solo repertoire of a golden era of composition from the 18th century, rather than as an accompanying instrument for English choral music and church liturgy. The Royal Festival Hall organ was a kind of real maverick experiment in what it would be like to go back to the organ design principles of the 17th and 18th centuries. It has a striking liveness and fire to its sound, making it an ideal partner for Perich’s 1-bit electronics.”

Naturally, the composer remains tight-lipped about what it all ultimately means, though his objective has largely remained the same these past 20 years or so. Perich’s modus operandi – combining the aesthetic simplicity of maths, physics and code with Steve Reich-like layers – needs to connect on some emotional level with human beings if it is to fulfil its purpose:

“My music is only successful when there's an emotional component,” he says. “And I think that emotion can come from very, very simple things, like understanding the laws of gravity, being able to comprehend why something falls, whether it’s an apple or a ball or a leaf falling from a tree, which can be a really beautiful moment in itself. And, in fact, the leaf is perhaps even more beautiful because it interacts with air on its way down. And air is something you don't see but we know exists because of our scientific understanding of the physical world. It's in this interesting kind of phenomenon that we can find beauty purely on its own.

Ruby Colley, the violinist, composer, and sound artist whose work spans genres from classical, to folk, sound art, and film, announces Hello Halo via New Amsterdam Records. Hello Halo was written for and performed by the contemporary vocalensembleExaudialongsideColleyonViolin.

Hello Halo is a composition that was developed alongside Colley’s brother, Paul Colley, who is neurodivergent and non-speaking. Despite being termed "non-verbal," Paul uses a rich repertoire of sounds and gestures to communicate. Colley transcribed these communication methods, using live voice and recordings of Paul, to make a vocal map of his life and relationships. “Hello Halo is an intimate examination of communication,bothsubtleandnuanced,thatasksquestions ofwhatitmeanstobehuman.”

Thepieceisanarchivalsnapshotofhislifeandrelationships, but also it’s a metanarrative, collaborative effort that grows out of the relationship into the sphere of moving artistic statement.“Thisrecordfeelslikeatruerepresentationofwho I am as a composer, and that's not to say that my older work isn't,butIthinkthisisthemostauthentickindofworkthatI've ever written so far,” says Colley. 'Amongst the Disquiet' speaks to the ties that bind within a multigenerational Vietnamese family in New Orleans. Through interwoven vignettes told through dialogue and songs, the film winds through the challenges, longings, and affections between family members. Through the perspective of multiple generations and even the dead, the film probes: What makes a home when home is left behind? Where is home when loved ones are gone? Does home live within us? Or where we bury our dead?

Featuring seven works from the film: five new compositions by THAO, a reworked version of her song "Temple", and a piano composition by Marion Hoàng Ng ọ c Hill.

Rich Brown bought his first six-string bass in 1999, "Everyone made funofme"herecallswithacharacteristicallywarmsmile-sincethen he's established a reputation as first-call player for the leaders of an impressive variety of adventurous projects, from Steve Coleman to Rudresh Mahanthappa to James 'Blood' Ulmer. Over the past two years, whenever time allows, he's been paying regular visits to the studio of his friend, the guitarist and producer Elmer Ferrer. Away from the pressures of the commercial industry, Rich seized the opportunity to explore and expand the vocabulary of his instrument.

'NYAEBA' took shape: written and performed entirely on the bass guitar. Rich drew inspiration from the many remarkable musicians he'ssupportedasabassist,orencounteredintherichly multicultural music scene in his adopted hometown of Toronto. Throughout the album, the commitment to melody and story ensures that the technique,thoughprodigious,neverovershadowsthetale.Eachtune was built up with multiple tracks in the studio, with no looping or sequencing involved. The sonic versatility on display is astounding, but the album retains the organic, intimate feel of a performance.

This album will no doubt sit comfortably among the essential solo bass albums, showcasing what's possible on the instrument. Growing up in Venado Tuerto, a small town in central Argentina, drummer/composer Juan Chiavassa was introduced to music at an early age by his father, a fusion fanatic who switched him on to the sounds of The Yellowjackets, Mike Stern, Jack DeJohnette, Wayne Shorter and many others. After winning a scholarship to Berklee CollegeOfMusic,wherehewastaughtbythelegendarysaxophonist George Garzone, Juan's talent shone through brightly enough to attract the attention of the cream of the New York scene, and his dreams came true when he was chosen for the drum chair in the Mike Stern band, alongside the very musicians whose recordings his father had played to him so many years before.

Now, after eight years playing at the highest level on the NYC scene, he's here with his debut album. Fourth Generation presents Juan leading a multi-generational band of world-class talent. Legendary bassist John Pattitucci is joined on piano and Rhodes by Juan's Venado Tuerto compadre Leo Genovese, and the band is fronted by his erstwhile mentor George Garzone on tenor. It feels like a real homecoming party, surrounded by the friends and teachers who helped Juan become who he is today, with surprise guests Mike Stern and Pedrito Martinez dropping by to hang out and jam.

'Ancestral' marks a profound metamorphosis for master saxophonist John O'Gallagher. He cast off his old skin, fundamentally altering his studies, homeland, and life, thereby charting a new future. Recorded at Sound on Sound Studios in Montclair, New Jersey, in January, 2024, 'Ancestral' was influenced, in part, by O'Gallagher's PhD studies into the music ofJohn Coltrane, and reunites the versatile reeds player with guitarist Ben Monder while,notably,featuresthefirst-everrecordedcollaborationbetween master drummers Andrew Cyrille and Billy Hart

"Basically,myPhD(availableonO'Gallagher'swebsite)isananalysis where I transcribed all of Trane's solos, spelling out what he does on his late recordings 'Interstellar Space' and 'Stellar Regions'. And it showsthatfreemusicisnotfree,notthewaypeoplethinkitis.Trane was definitely thinking about organization in those records. This research definitely gave me ideas about how to be freer within the systems that I had developed, and how to perceive them in a more organic way."

O'Gallagher's latest recording marks a significant artistic evolution, following a period of considerable personal change. After leaving Brooklyn, New York, he and his wife relocated to the UK before ultimately settling in Lisbon, Portugal. This journey, coupled with dedicated study, profoundly shaped his new music.

In an album consisting largely of first takes, O'Gallagher's compositionsvaryfromthrough-composedpiecestoskeletalcharts to full-blown group compositions/ improvisations.
