Lent and Easter
“I have always loved the desert. One sits down on a desert sand dune, sees nothing, hears nothing. Yet through the silence something throbs, and gleams.”
ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPÉRY, THE LITTLE PRINCE
Standing at the edge of the Lenten desert, I am captivated by the immense and daunting landscape that unfolds before me. As far as the eye can see, there are infinite particles of sand and rock stretching endlessly into the horizon.
My wandering thoughts keep me company as I stare intensely at the sand near my feet. There is no obligation for me to step into the desert. I can choose whether to embark on this Lenten journey or not. Yet, something or someone is drawing me in. I turn around and observe the lush and tempting comforts of my complacency.
Struggling with the allure to avoid the desert journey, tension builds within me. Thoughts of worldly indulgence and self-gratification bring a fleeting sense of delight. I like the things of this good world. It is hard to leave them behind. Perhaps, I like them too much.
As the distractions fade, I’m aware of the invitation from Jesus to draw closer to him. But distractions still persist, and the present moment gives way to questions about how this journey will unfold. Will it be arduous or uncomfortable? What if nothing happens? Or what if things surface in my heart that I would rather avoid? Does everyone feel this way at the start of Lent?

Pope Leo XIV
Pope Leo XIV
Restless Heart, Faithful Shepherd
SR. GEMMA MORATÓ SENDRA, OP
A new era for the Church begins with Pope Leo XIV— Augustinian friar, missionary for distant lands, bishop among the poor, prefect entrusted with appointing pastors throughout the world, and successor to Peter. Above all, Leo XIV has proven to be a tireless seeker of Truth. His vocation was born of that restlessness of heart to which Saint Augustine gave expression: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” In the Augustinian spirit, Leo XIV has trusted the power of the gospel to shape his style: humble yet firm, quiet yet courageous. His path has been marked by service, listening, and quiet fidelity— a shepherd who walks with seekers, unafraid of their questions, patient in accompaniment.
So, what does Pope Leo XIV want us to know in order to live the gospel more faithfully? How can we ensure that Christ remains the center of our lives? Leo XIV invites us to live a faith that is alive and open to the world. This book explores themes inspired by his first Urbi et Orbi blessing as Peter’s successor, given on May 8, 2025.

Everybody hurts.
Physically. Emotionally. Mentally. Spiritually.
Healing Circles address that hurt by calling suffering souls together at the parish level to encourage healing through shared experience, emotional support, personal insight, skill development, and spiritual growth.
Liguori Publications' forthcoming small-group program, Healing Circles, brings people together to support healing in others through prayer, conversation, and guided reading materials. The program sessions are a unique, Christ-centered environment designed to alleviate suffering, nurture kindness and compassion, and deepen the capacity to heal.

Experience healing as an expression of God’s mercy.
The Healing Circles Parish Program is based on the research of Dr. Richard P. Johnson, PhD, who has taught hundreds of persons interested in the art of medicine and healing. Healing Circles will be administered by parish volunteers who train as program facilitators.
Healing Circles is presented by Liguori Publications, a ministry of the Redemptorists.
