Principal’s Report •
Further strengthen teacher practice which is responsive to student needs and teacher professional development so as to equip and empower teachers in this dynamic period of change in education. Survey results and general and specific feedback continue to highlight Redeemer’s excellent pastoral care across the whole college. Be that as it may, Redeemer seeks to continually improve its Pastoral Care service to its families and where possible the wider community. Our Vertical House system provides many avenues to strengthen relationships across the various year levels.
In the nationwide scheme of Lutheran Education, 2014 is a very special year as it marks the 175th anniversary of Lutheran Education in Australia. Redeemer, along with Lutheran schools across Australia, celebrated this significant milestone in thankful recognition to the pioneer German Lutherans who sought to improve life for their children by building schools and in so doing gifted to the wider community the Lutheran Education system serving Australia today. The focus on the academic life of the College for 2014 commenced with the OP1 ceremony involving Kristen Bertschy, Lucy Griffin, Kobe Ko, and Karl Ko with the four OP1 recipients perfectly matching Redeemer’s average. The graduating class of 2013 performed almost 10% above the State average in the OP1-5 category, which again is the expected range for this Redeemer statistic. In 2014, Redeemer’s NAPLAN results continued to reflect the academic success experienced across the College. For the second consecutive year, our student scores were higher than State and National averages in each area tested in every year level. Tracking of cohorts over the last seven years also indicate that Redeemer students improve at a greater rate than their State and National counterparts. This success is testament to the support of our parents, the commitment of our students, and the dedication of all staff across the College. Throughout 2014, broader learning activities continued across the College with the Canberra Tour being unusual this year in that both the Year 6s and the Year 7s visited Canberra as a consequence of Year 7 moving to the secondary level of schooling in 2015. The Canberra Tour’s move to Year 6 in 2014 changes in significance to some extent as it transitions from being a Middle Years activity to being the pinnacle or mountain-top experience of the Junior School. Over the next two to three years as Redeemer moves to becoming a 21st Century Learning Community, I assure parents that Redeemer will: •

Maintain its high standards in literacy, numeracy, scientific inquiry and in the subject disciplines, retaining the teaching of traditional academic skills and practices. Utilise IT as both teaching and learning tools, not just teaching tools (hence Redeemer’s My Big Campus & BYOD initiatives); Develop new pedagogical strategies to incorporate teaching and learning approaches such as more individualised student learning, collaborative learning between students, and an increased focus on encouraging creativity;

In response to specific concerns from parents and staff, significant resources at Redeemer were allocated to strengthening the transitioning of Year 6 and the new Year 7 students to the Senior School for 2015 and beyond. Mr Matt Fasso (Pastoral Care Leader Years 3-6) and Ms Lauren Krenske (Pastoral Care Leader Year 7) coordinated very well across the Junior School - Senior School divide, making the most of Redeemer’s Prep to Year 12 environment. Earlier in 2014, the Year 6s were provided a Transition Passport to Year 7 which has included a range of familiarisation activities during 2014. Year 6s also competed against the Year 7s in the ‘Transition Cup’ which involved sporting and trivia contests throughout the year. The Year 6s had their timetable modified as 2014 progressed, preparing them for the two week cycle that operates in the Senior School, including daily homework and learning to use their pigeon hole as a locker. Other personal-organisation initiatives also assisted the Year 6s in their awareness of what will be required of them in 2015. Year 7s played their part in welcoming new Year 8s for 2015 by writing to incoming Year 8s, making them welcome and sharing their experiences of life at Redeemer. Final transition preparations for 2015 have included a Parent Information Evening and an Orientation Day. I take this opportunity to thank all staff who have supported these initiatives in 2014 and I especially thank Mrs Kelli McKeiver (Head of Junior School) and Mr Michael Trott (Director of Middle Years) for their leadership in developing this program. There has been an abundance of highs in the 2014 Performance Music year with all ensembles consistently exceeding expectations through regular rehearsals and memorable, outstanding performances. 2014 has been one of the finest years for Music at Redeemer. In the Junior School, all Performance Music students have experienced great musical highs. Our Junior Choir, bigger than ever with over 60 voices, performed beautifully at every occasion. This choral ensemble is not only an introduction to College vocal ensembles, but a strong musical force in its own right. The same can be said for Junior String Ensemble which has truly flourished this year. Senior Concert Band won the Queensland Youth Music Awards for the second year running. Placing first in such a high-profile and prestigious event is a great achievement for these hard-working students. Chamber Strings also received a silver award at the same competition and all Senior School ensembles gave equally stunning performances at the Redlands Eisteddfod. Intermediate String Ensemble and Intermediate Concert Band both placed first in their sections, which is wonderful for these ensembles that are growing from strength to strength each year. All choral ensembles had a strong year, also, including a superb performance as part of the Queensland Youth Orchestra’s Concerts at Twilight series
at Brisbane’s Old Museum Building. Redeemer can be very proud of the partnership that it has formed with QYO over the last few years, with numerous Senior School and Junior School students gaining positions as players within that very competitive and world-class organization. Obviously, the music department is full of very fine developing instrumentalists of whom we can be very proud. They continue to inspire us, and each other. We thank the entire College community for their ongoing support and encouragement of our hard-working and talented young musicians. They are fine ambassadors for the College. The development of Sport at Redeemer in 2014 continued building on improvements from the previous two years. It was most pleasing to see the increased level of student participation across the board in TAS and JTAS sports and the increased support from parents for the Parent Supporter Groups. It was only fitting then that this increased commitment was rewarded with the introduction of the Sports Award Evening and the three new Sports Awards recognising achievement and most importantly commitment or service to Redeemer Sport. All indications are that the Sports Award Evening will grow to become one of the annual highlights of the year for the Redeemer community. Parents and students will have noticed that during 2014 Redeemer has significantly increased its use of surveys. Adding to this, the College is able to gather much useful data from Redeemer’s new Web Site and the College App. I assure parents that the constant gathering of information is both helping the College improve protocols and policies or the information has been useful in identifying new and emerging needs. Via the use of these tools, Redeemer seeks to better serve its student and parent community, both in its day-to-day operations as well as its forward planning. These tools add to the on-going practice of parents providing direct feedback via traditional communication, meetings and the P & F processes. Community partnerships with the P & F and Our Saviour Lutheran Church have once again been of great benefit to the College in terms of building a strong caring community that models responsible citizenship to our student community, participation through service to others and expressing and exercising the care and love of Christ. Many parents who arrive at the College each day for drop off and pick up may have noticed a bright canary yellow van. This van belongs to an organisation called “Helping Hands”. Helping Hands had its beginnings in 2009 to reach out to those who struggle with life and lend a helping hand. They could be people who find themselves isolated, sleeping outside or in hostels, less advantaged, or just enjoy a cuppa and chat on a regular basis. Our Saviour congregation and Redeemer Lutheran College have formed a joint ministry with Helping Hands to undertake a similar venture in our local community. This joint mission venture will become a regular part of Service Learning at the college. Our Saviour Lutheran Church also supports the co-curricular program via Christian Dance, the reading and giving of Bibles to the Junior School, and their support of Redeemer Fair. Our Saviour continues to be a significant contributor to the community life of Redeemer in 2014, for which we are very thankful.
Parent Supporters Groups and Redeemer Fair, they continue to investigate new initiatives with regards to new community building and fund-raising activities. An uncommon event was the 96.5 and Channel 7 visit just prior to the Fair. P & F’s support of this event was outstanding, with P & F working tirelessly for many hours well before most of us were out of bed. As per College Council policy, further air-conditioning of the Senior School will take place during the Christmas holidays, the additional air-conditioning will mean that Redeemer will be only about 15% shy of having all classrooms air-conditioned P-12. We acknowledge the P & F’s on-going financial support for the air-conditioning program. As announced last year, Senior School redevelopment continues to be the focus of the College’s capital program in order that Redeemer as a whole has contemporary facilities which effectively support all programs offered by the College. The development of the Middle Years precinct will continue with an additional recreation space, the Senior School will see the courtyard completely redeveloped with the provision for outdoor flexible learning spaces, the swimming pool toilets will be upgraded, and a new flexible learning classroom with appropriate furnishings will also be created in the Senior School. The Junior School has not been left out and will see the Science Room modified so that it can ably provide for both Science and Art lessons. Redeemer has a wonderful staff culture, one that is rich in service, care and professionalism. Throughout 2014, staff have worked very hard in their service to families of Redeemer. Looking across the College, I see overwhelming evidence of hard working, committed and loyal staff in the non-teaching area as well. The beautiful grounds of the College always impress community members and visitors alike and are evidence of a dedicated and creative grounds and maintenance staff; and the cleanliness of our facilities equally reflects a cleaning crew who are professional and proud of what they do. Elsewhere, the academic support staff of the College directly serve the needs of parents and visitors through the various administration roles or in their roles of assisting teachers. In all cases the compliments that flow from the community to the College about the work of our staff are always appreciated. It is with sadness that we farewell staff from across the College, both teaching and non-teaching. We thank each of them for their service to the families of the College and wish them all the very best for the future. Please join me in thanking Ms Natalie Andrews, Mr Gavin Andrews, Mr Matt Fasso, Mr Frank Ford, Mrs Kellie Hardke, Mr Andrew Kennedy, Mrs Sue Moloney, and Pastor Matthew Thomas, for their service to the students and families of the Redeemer community. In closing, I thank the College Council for their leadership of Redeemer this year, at the governance level of the College it has been an interesting year as the Council grappled with the ever changing Government policies and emerging needs of 21st century education. College Council Report As 2014 draws to a close for Redeemer Lutheran College I report as follows. The sub-school restructure was introduced at the beginning of 2014. The State Government mandated “Year 7 into High School”, formally commences in 2015. Redeemer decided to commence this change in 2014 as it was considered the best way to meet the needs of the students and allowed the College to introduce other sub-school changes to facilitate improved pastoral care. The College now has two sub-schools: Junior School (Prep-Year 6) and Senior School (Years 7-12). Within the Senior sub-school, the College has introduced the Middle Years (7-9) program. This program will continue the many positive attributes of the Middle School as well as incorporate new features that will facilitate the transition from Junior School to the final years of Senior School. This program has a strong emphasis on Pastoral Care. The College introduced the learning management system, “My Big Campus”, in the second semester of 2013. Use of this system has increased in 2014, with some imaginative presentations being placed online by staff. The introduction of “My Big Campus” will allow the College to continue bringing 21st Century learning to the students. One of the objectives of the 2013-2015 Strategic Plan is to review the College’s Chaplaincy program to assess its effectiveness. With Pastor Paul Thiele accepting the call to Good News Congregation and School at Middle Park, Brisbane at the beginning of the year, College Council agreed to complete this review prior to calling a replacement Pastor. The review was completed and College Council is now in the process of determining to whom they should extend a call. After Pastor Paul moved to Middle Park at the end of Term 1, Lay Chaplains were appointed to continue the pastoral care program. At the end of this year, Pastor Matt Thomas, who served Redeemer on a part-time basis, leaves to accept a call to a position in Melbourne. College Council appreciates the contributions that both Pastor Paul and Pastor Matt made over the many years they served at the College and thanks them for their efforts. I acknowledge the partnership that Redeemer has with Our Saviour Lutheran Church as we celebrate its thirtieth year. This partnership sees a regular worshipping community in the Redeemer Chapel. This community provides a living witness to “Our Hope is in Christ”. The College has had a focus this year on revitalizing the older existing facilities. This revitalization will continue over the summer holidays with remodelling occurring in the senior school courtyard and a number of classrooms having air conditioning installed. During the September school holidays in 2015, Redeemer will be hosting the Lutheran Church of Australia General Convention of Synod. Delegates from Lutheran congregations from all around Australia and New Zealand will be attending this convention which is generally held every 3 years. The Synod helps to set the future directions for the Lutheran Church.

Redeemer Fair, which is organised by the Parents and Friends Association, was a very successful event again this year. On behalf of College Council, I thank the many parents, students and staff who volunteered their time over an extended period of time to make this such a great event. Redeemer would not function as well as it does without all the work of the auxiliaries, such as Parents and Friends Association, Sporting Supporter groups, Music Supporters, Past Parents and Friends, Alumni, Redeemer Foundation, Our Saviour congregation and the list goes on. To all of the auxiliaries and the associated volunteers, I and College Council thank you. I want to thank College Councillor, Caroline Ryan, who retired this year, for her service to the College over many years. I take this opportunity to thank the members of College Council who volunteer their time to function as the College’s governing body and ensure that the College remains founded on God’s Word, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “Our Hope is in Christ” Mr Ross Warbrooke Chairman

Redeemer Lutheran College Foundation The Redeemer Lutheran College Foundation was reactivated at an Annual General Meeting held on Monday 24 November 2014. On Tuesday 2 December 2014 the Foundation Board met for the first time. Parents and Friends Association Firstly, I would like to say that it has been an absolute privilege to represent the college as President. Although my inaugural year as president has not been without some challenges I would like to acknowledge some of the highlights for the P & F Association:
I would also like to thank Mr David Radke and Mrs Kelli Mckeiver for their support of the P & F and availability to attend most meeting and quite often be able to answer questions that have been raised by other parents.

The ongoing success of the Redeemer P & F Association relies very heavily on the support of all parents within the school and I would encourage you all to come along in 2015 and get involved by supporting your Parent body that has a real voice within the school.

Complete funding of the Junior School slide to enable it to be usable now and in the future. Funded the cost of three additional water bubblers around the college. Contribution to decking around the mango tree in front of the chapel for better use of this area. Funding of Redeemer Fair / Channel 7 – 96.5 FM visit. Funding inaugural Sports Awards with trophies for major award winners and ongoing support of this event. Purchase of two 6x4 Redeemer branded marquee’s for the Sports department. Junior School Disco continues to be a success. Funding of the subscription for ‘Sustainable School Shop’ for all parents.
I would also like to acknowledge the Management team of the P & F publicly because without the efforts of these wonderful ladies a lot of things may never have got off the ground. Secretary: Mrs Amanda Drake
Meetings are held once a month from 7.00pm on a Monday night and all are welcome to attend, the more support our association gains the easier it is for us all to assist the children of our wonderful college in whatever way required in the future. If attendance at monthly meetings is not your thing then volunteers are always welcome for everything from Supporter Groups to assisting at the Fair. In closing, it would absolutely remiss of me to not acknowledge the many years of support of some of the colleges most loyal servants as both supporters of the P & F and willing volunteers for many years in many ways. A large number of these parent’s children graduated from Redeemer this year and their commitment to the college has been unwavering and for this we are forever grateful.

Rugby Supporters
Music Supporters
Redeemer Rugby Supporters would like to thank family, friends and students for their contributions during the 2014 season. The Supporters Barbecue has been a tradition for many years. On home game Saturday mornings, the barbecue provides refreshments for spectators and players. I encourage new parents to get involved. It is an opportunity to support the players, meet other parents and creates a sense of community at the grounds. New members are most welcome.
The year started off busy with the issuing of the school Music uniform to all students involved in ensembles, either instrumental or vocal. Members of the Music Supporters Group came in during lunch times and other rehearsal times to issue the uniforms. New uniforms had to be purchased this year due to the continued growth of the school’s music program.
All proceeds from the barbecue benefit Redeemer Rugby. This year funds raised were used to purchase Training Shirts for the players across all year levels. It is time to farewell to the Year 12 families who have played an integral part in Redeemer Rugby and the Supporters group. In particular our thanks go to the Furlonger, Martyn, Schwarz, Lobegeier and Grant families who have donated their time and efforts over many years to the benefit of Redeemer Rugby. Soccer Supporters Redeemer Soccer had a great year thanks to the dedicated players and coaches. Congratulations to all those involved, your achievements are a credit yourselves and the school. Soccer Supporters provide refreshments at home games and relies on the support of volunteers. The Soccer Supporters Barbecue provides the opportunity to meet other parents and encourage our teams. 2014 was another highly successful year for all the music students at Redeemer. The annual concert program was as jam packed as usual which kept the Music Supporters Group very busy organising, managing and cleaning up the supper offered to all students and parents at these events. The group also helped to feed the music students, at afternoon tea time, during weekend workshops for all of the senior music groups. These workshops were organised to help further develop the musical abilities of our students in preparation for the competitions they were involved in throughout the year. Redeemer Fair was another busy time for the group as they operated the Coffee Shop in the Multi-Purpose Centre. The group also worked with the staff to help in fundraising for new instruments for the expanding program. As mentioned, the music department had a fantastically successful year. We would like to sincerely thank the staff for their dedication and continual support of the students both in and out of school hours. Their passion for their job certainly motivates the groups and inspires them to be the best they can. Thank you also to the parents of the music students. Your support of your child’s musical education through your early drop offs, late pickups, weekend visits to the school and night time concerts and eisteddfods is outstanding. 2014 saw our group grow in numbers which was wonderful. As they say many hands make light work. Children love to see their parents involved in their school life (from a distance sometimes) and do appreciate their interest even if they don’t always show it. What better way to help out than join a supporters’ group. We meet for 1 hour each month and would love to see new faces, so please take up this invitation in 2015 and help us to help support the staff and students in another wonderful year of music at Redeemer.
