Principal’s Report
2012 has been a very busy and rewarding year for our college. Highlights included the completion of some long term projects resulting in quality programs being delivered to our students. For the past three years Redeemer has been working very hard across all three sub-schools on the implementation of Australian Curriculum with the aim of best placing our P - 10 students for the future. While students and some parents have been very cognisant of these changes gradually taking place on a daily and weekly basis, the implementation of new Reporting requirements of the Australian Curriculum has gained everybody’s attention and is likely to be central to many a dialogue, both between home and school, and also between teachers. The continuing roll-out of Australian Curriculum will progress for quite some years into the foreseeable future, Redeemer will not blindly follow the recommendations of the various National and State Educational Authorities but rather Redeemer will continue to reflect on its implementation of the National Curriculum with the goal of providing best practice to its students. Behind the scenes prior to 2012, there has been planning across the whole college to grow student leadership opportunities at Redeemer. Therefore, 2012 commenced with a range of initiatives in all three sub-schools. All Year 11 students commenced the year with a Leadership Camp at Luther Heights Camp at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast. Apart from socialisation and cohort bonding goals, the camp focused on setting personal goals, learning how to be more effective servants to each other and the whole Redeemer community, as well as being made aware of leadership opportunities in their senior years. Middle School introduced a leadership training program open to all students in Years 6, 7, 8, with opportunities to serve and lead within the Middle School built into the program. This Middle School student leadership initiative was also enhanced with expanded Pastoral Care activities such as Pavement Art. Likewise, the Junior School expanded House activities

inclusive of Pavement Art (now a very popular P-12 House activity). Junior School House Captains were introduced, supported by staff mentoring and opportunities to provide leadership at specific Junior School events and ceremonies. Development of Redeemer’s Student Leadership Programs will continue next year as we seek to provide students with ever increasing genuine opportunities to lead, as well as learning about leadership. The whole of college aim over the next few years is to establish leadership programs and positions so that on the one hand individuals may pursue these in each sub-school if they wish, and on the other hand have programs that challenge most students to develop leadership awareness, if not leadership skills to enrich their personal lives. Sporting achievement across the whole college, both at the Junior TAS (JTAS) competition level and at the TAS Secondary level was solid with a number of teams winning premierships in each term in TAS and with many JTAS teams also performing at the top of the competition. However, it was not achievements that set 2012 apart as a significant sporting year at Redeemer, rather it was student participation. After a number of years of struggling to field teams for a broad range of reasons, 2012 saw Redeemer meeting all of its commitments on the back of renewed energy and optimism from students. Congratulations and thanks goes to staff, students and parents who, together, have worked very hard to achieve this outcome. This change in sporting culture now paves the way for many positive years of Redeemer sport. Another boost to sport this year was the extension of Fred Davey Oval providing a TAS competition sized Hockey and Soccer Oval, as well as an accredited size JTAS cricket field. An additional training area for field sports was also added to the College’s facilities via improvements to the southern portion of the vacant land fronting Priestdale Road, which will continue to be developed toward a playable sized surface in future years.
Performing and Visual Arts once again produced a memorable year. In Drama, public performances from the elective classes produced delight and awe in their audiences. The Music Department continued to flourish, stretching themselves beyond school performances to present concerts for the wider community. Chamber by Candlelight and the biennial Piano and Vocal Competition were once again highlights of the year providing students with opportunities to extend their musicianship and performance experiences. The showcasing of student work from the Technologies, Hospitality, Art and Textiles at Springboard was again spectacular. Those who visited the display on the opening night of Springboard or at Redeemer Fair will attest to the outstanding quality of the student work. For the Redeemer community as a whole, the opening and dedication of Junior School Block G (JG Block) dramatically changed the daily life of the Junior School and the physical attributes of the Junior Campus. We were delighted to welcome the Premier, Mr Campbell Newman, to officially open the building. We were also pleased that Redeemer’s two previous principals, Mr Robin Kleinschmidt (founding Principal) and Dr Richard Hauser (under whose leadership the Junior School was founded), were able to join us as special guests for this event. Aside from the nature of the opening ceremony, JG Block is historically significant to Redeemer as it was included in the initial design work for the Junior School. Over the past six years, a variety of hurdles and redirections resulted in a significantly modified master plan for the Junior School as a whole and ultimately led to a delay in the building of JG Block. Visitors to JG Block will notice a wall of tiles, each tile having been created by a founding student of the Junior School in 2007. The oldest founding students are now in Year 10, with the founding Prep students making up the Year 5 classes of 2012. JG Block was not the only capital development of 2012. The Senior School saw the establishment and progressive development of a modular building (SE20), annex to Hospitality. This facility will provide dedicated and specialised ‘Front of House’ resources including beverage services, which previously did not have a dedicated learning and teaching space. As Redeemer looks ahead to the next five years, the focus of planning and development of facilities will increasingly be on the Senior and Middle Schools. Accordingly, through the Christmas break, a range of minor capital projects will be undertaken in these sub-schools. A concerted effort will be made in 2013 to improve the Toilet and Change Room facilities in the Middle and Senior Schools. Learning Enhancement across the College will benefit from more space and slightly increased staffing. Sport will have a centralised office with the Head of Sport and Head of Junior Sport being co-located in the centre of the College. Fred Davey Oval and the vacant land on the western boundary of the College will continue to be improved. Improvements are also planned for Film and TV, and Drama, and a range of staff will be shifting offices in order to provide a more effective service to meet student needs. In many respects this year has been a challenging year for our P & F as they came to terms with operating in a completely different manner with the passing of the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop to the College’s management. While all things have continued to operate
fairly smoothly the nature of P & F meetings was significantly different this year without the business reports for the two enterprises. Despite this change it was most pleasing to see Parent Support Groups slightly stronger than in previous years as well as parents continuing to volunteer in the Tuckshop. Despite the late rain on the day, Redeemer Fair was again a great success, both in terms of the monies made and the attendance. The P & F can be rightfully proud of their work and achievements this year. Their donations to the college for 2012 have exceeded $60,000, directly benefitting students and staff across the whole college. The evolution of computer technology continues to challenge all of society. This term, a new IT management structure has been introduced to Redeemer to more rapidly and decisively plan for and make decisions involving computer technologies. At the end of August this year, we said farewell to Carol Appleton who retired from her position of Book Shop Coordinator after a record 32½ years of faithful service to Redeemer’s book shop operations. Carol commenced at Redeemer as a volunteer in the college’s first year of operations when books were sold by a group of volunteers led by Carol. We sincerely thank Carol for the many years of service she has given to Redeemer and wish her well in her retirement. At the end of this year, we farewell two more long serving Redeemer staff members who are entering retirement. Steve Hollister (Curriculum Leader Business Years 9-12) is retiring after 17 years of faithful service to Redeemer. Steve’s commitment to his subject area and dedication to the co-curricular program of the college will be missed. Judy Powell (Head of Middle School) is also retiring after 23 years of service to Redeemer and more than 10 years as an Executive member. These staff will be greatly missed and we wish them all health and happiness in the next phase of their lives. We also farewell Amy Homann who has been teaching in the Junior School for the last three years, and AnneMarie Stallard who completed a contract in the Senior School this year teaching Maths and Science. We wish all departing staff the very best for the future. The teachers in all sub-schools are to be thanked for their excellent work, witnessed most obviously through student outcomes, but also too through their genuine care and support of students. Looking across the College I see overwhelming evidence of hard working, committed and loyal staff in the non-teaching areas as well. The beautiful grounds of the College always impress community members and visitors alike and are evidence of a dedicated and creative grounds and maintenance staff; and the cleanliness of our facilities equally reflects a cleaning crew who are professional and proud of what they do. Elsewhere, the support staff of the College in their many and varied roles directly serve the needs of students, parents and visitors. In all cases, the compliments that flow from the community to the College about the work of our staff are always appreciated. The College Council’s membership is also well supported by parents, and all are volunteers. At the governance level of the College, it has been a challenging year at times, and I thank College Council for their dedication, guidance and support of the College Executive and of me personally. College Council Report As I reflect on the events of 2012, it is clear it has been another busy year at Redeemer Lutheran College. Construction of JG Block in the Junior School was completed for the start of Term 3. The new building provides an additional six permanent class rooms, which have been designed with flexibility as a strong feature. I understand from the staff that this flexibility is regularly used and is being used in more creative ways that had not been contemplated at the design stage. Stage 1 of the work on the new Junior School playground was completed soon after and what a stunning playground has been produced. This is evidenced by the intense use of the equipment and the area at break times. I thank students and parents for their patience in the time that has been taken to get all the necessary approvals in place and then to construct this facility. At the beginning of the year, the new Junior School administration block was installed adjacent to the MPC building. This provided Junior School staff with improved staff facilities and brought administration to the front of the sub-school where it is more accessible for parents and visitors. In the Senior School, a new modular building has been installed adjacent to the Hospitality Training kitchen. The usefulness of this space was demonstrated when the Year 10s catered for Christmas in July in this building. The guests were parents and friends of the students and made quite a crowd. It was good to see the temporary fence around the Senior School volleyball courts removed following completion of strengthening works to the roof structure. Large undercover areas are useful considering this area’s climactic conditions. Refurbishment of the Middle School toilets in SA Block commenced in Term 4. Over the Christmas holidays, the change rooms at the swimming pool will be refurbished. Ongoing refurbishment at Redeemer will be carefully monitored by the College Council. Other challenges for the College are the transition of Year 7 into high school, Australian Curriculum and funding by the State and Federal Governments. The transition of Year 7 into high school commences in 2015 and in preparation for this, College Council

reviewed the sub-school structure. As has been previously announced, from 2015, the Middle School will be Years 7, 8 and 9. This revised structure is also seen as complementing the proposed Australian Curriculum, which is gradually being rolled out across all subjects. Funding by State and Federal Governments is an ongoing challenge, as the State Government funding is currently falling in real terms and we wait to see which recommendations from the Gonski Report are adopted by the Federal Government. Amidst all these developments, College Council has been wrestling with a strategic plan for 2012 to 2016. It is planned to release the Strategic Plan early in 2013. While all this has been happening, the College Executive and College Staff have gotten on with the business of running a College. I continue to be moved when I see and hear of the dedication and compassion shown by all staff and I thank you for remaining student focussed. In particular, I want to acknowledge the long term commitment of Carol Appleton (32½ years), Judy Powell (23 years) and Steve Hollister (17 years) to the College and thank them for their service. The College would not function as well as it does without all the work of the auxiliaries, such as Parents and Friends Association, Sporting Supporters groups, Music Supporters, Past Parents group, Alumni, Redeemer Foundation, Our Saviour congregation and the list goes on. At the beginning of 2012, the responsibility for the running of the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop was handed over to the College by the P & F. This hand over was brought about by changes in the Workplace Health and Safety Legislation, which were seen as being better handled if the College was directly responsible for running these facilities. P & F continues to organise Redeemer Fair, which was another successful event this year, despite the rain in the closing hours. To all of the auxiliaries and the associated volunteers, I and College Council thank you. I also take this opportunity to thank the members of College Council who volunteer their time to function as the College’s governing body and ensure that the College remains founded on God’s Word, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “Our Hope is in Christ” Mr Ross Warbrooke Chairman
Parents and Friends Association 2012 has been a very different year in many ways for the P & F Association. With the handover of the businesses to the College, life has been much less complicated – with the void amply filled with running families! The College has continued both services and have plans to evolve and grow the service they provide. The process by which the P & F can have input into the distribution of the profits, will be finalised at our AGM. Supporters groups have been functioning well with their dedicated teams hosting sausage sizzles, coaching activities and family events. Rugby supporters still hold the honour of making the best bacon and egg burgers in Redeemer’s history! Music Supporters are very active in the music department as they continue to support the rigorous concert series with front of house support, suppers and raising funds to purchase instruments and equipment for the music department. Redeemer Mums have been an active part of the Redeemer community for many years. Next year the group will be organised by a new face as we say thank you to two ladies who have been the friendly welcoming face of our community – Dee Norris and Sandra Treeby. A sincere and heart-felt thanks to you ladies, you have been fantastic leaders in our community.

We must particularly mention the generous donation by one of our parents of two commercial coffee machines that are always being used. Springboard and the Redeemer Fair were amazing! The quality of Redeemers visual arts and technology students’ work is outstanding. We applaud our students’ creativity and thank the teachers that enable and inspire them. The fair was impacted by the weather this year, but nothing could dampen the spirit that is Redeemer. So many people enjoying time together, time to just sit, relax and listen to our music students in the MPC and catch up with friends and family. As always we are grateful to Natalie Pashen and her wonderful team who organise and run what is an outstanding community event. The Parents and Friends Association only exists to serve the Redeemer community. We look forward to another year of achievements as we journey together watching our children mature and grow in our time at the best school in South east Queensland – Redeemer Lutheran College! Rugby Supporters
Music Supporters
Redeemer Rugby Supporters is a group of parents and staff who wish to support our children in their endeavours and share a passion for Rugby Union. In the year 2012 the core committee included Dianne and Ross Furlonger, James Martyn, Rudi Schwarz, Leon Lobegeier , Col Stiller and Angie Leeming. Special mention goes to Kerry Martyn (emergency procurement services), Eric Stiller (tireless BBQ services) and Paul Balfe (photography services).
The Redeemer Music Supporters group continues to provide invaluable support behind the scenes. Music Supporters meet regularly with the Music Department to identify where the focus should be for the upcoming year. The work of the dedicated and inspiring music staff is greatly appreciated. It has been a busy year, with many musical events and successes throughout all year levels.
Rugby Union gives students so much more than an hour’s exercise on a Saturday morning. It is a sport steeped in tradition; they are exposed to sportsmanship, camaraderie and respect. Students develop as individuals, perform as a team and bond as a school. Spectators are rewarded for their time by viewing the talents of these young men. Rugby Supporters raise funds through running a BBQ at the home games held at Stoltz Oval. Providing sustenance for players and spectators alike, the extended menu includes, sausages on bread, a variety of burgers - including the newly added BLT and cold drinks. All money raised by Rugby Supporters is used to benefit the Redeemer Rugby players. In recognition of their achievement the First XV teams receive a free burger and drink at the end of their game. Support comes in many forms and contributes to the positive atmosphere at the games. The committee would like to thank the volunteers who offered help and lightened our load, the spectators who purchased our wares and the dedicated students who entertained with their skills. Rugby Supporters is always keen to include new faces and ideas, please join us next year!
The music program in 2012 included an outstanding concert series, performances at The Plains Retirement Home, Redlands Eisteddfod, Chamber by Candlelight, and the opening of Rochedale Estates, just to name a few. Redeemer Fair in 2012 looked a little different for the Music Supporters group. Instead of the traditional Biscuit Barrel the Music Supporters group organised the Coffee Shop in the MPC and it was an overwhelming success. Great coffee, delicious sweets and outstanding musical entertainment what more could you want? Music students are looking forward to an exciting, busy and fulfilling 2013, with the Victoria and Melbourne trip planned for students in Senior Singers, Redeemer Chorale, The fellas, Chamber Strings, Senior Concert Band and Stage Band, plus the many hours of rehearsals for the 2013 college musical, The Pajama Game. We would like to invite interested parents across the college who would like to support their child’s musical development, to join our group in 2013. It is a great way to show your child how much you value their education and how important it is to volunteer and participate in their growth and development. We thank the teachers, students and their families for their ongoing commitment to the music program at Redeemer Lutheran College and pray that we will continue to grow in 2013.
Redeemer Past Parents & Friends 2012 concluded for the Redeemer Past Parents & Friends group with a “Wine and Cheese” evening held at the Redeemer Chapel Welcome Hub on Saturday 10 November. Sixty parents and friends of the college attended, enjoying great conversation, finger food and wine (of course!) Our special thanks go to Teri Grandin at the college tuckshop who made catering a “breeze” and to Tyson Stelzer who once again donated some fine wine! Our next function will be held on the first weekend in March, (venue still to be confirmed), and once again we look forward to greeting old friends and meeting new parents and friends from the college community.
