From the Principal Redeemer’s ‘end of year’ for 2013 was exhausting and exciting for all of the right reasons and there were a range of events that are historically unique to the 2013 year’s end. One of the highlights was the quadrennial Australian Conference on Lutheran Education (ACLE) over the September/ October school holidays. ACLE is a major professional development event for staff in Lutheran schools across Australia and provided a rich experience for all involved. ACLE also saw Redeemer contributions from Christian Dance students, Year 11 Film and Television students and Year 11 students participating in a Q & A session with noted American educator, Alan November. From ACLE, Redeemer jumped into Springboard which once again brought widespread community delight at the marvelous presentations of student work from The Arts and Technology curriculum areas. Within the same week, we joined in the fun of the Fair which was a wonderful community event. During Term 4, Redeemer staff put the final touches to the implementation plans that will see a Redeemer with two sub-schools rather than three for 2014 and beyond. Pastoral Care across the College will be strengthened and the commitment to the ‘Middle Years’ enhanced through the new Middle Years Program. Quality teaching and learning will remain the focus and Redeemer’s practice of providing rigorous academic instruction and learning at all year levels will continue. This year’s Valedictory Service saw the inclusion of Year 12 Awards (including Dux) and the Leadership Candle ceremony which enhanced what is always a very special evening. The Closing Services also incorporated some changes. The Closing Services for the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools became the Junior School Celebration Ceremony and the Year 6 to Year 11 Celebration Ceremony. The goal with both ceremonies was to present a truly joyous celebration of the year that was slightly less formal than past practice, more streamlined, and reflectively up-lifting. Future years will see the continual development of both Celebration Ceremonies. The close of the 2013 year was truly remarkable and I sincerely thank students, staff and parents for all of their contributions to the events of the term and the year. Mr David Radke Principal

From the Chaplain The God of the Ordinary The last month or so has been interesting. As a pastor and fellow traveller, I have had the chance to walk with a number of people through some significant experiences. We have just had the funeral of a dear member of our congregation. At the other end of life, my brother has had his first child. I have baptised a student from the Middle School. Some of my colleagues have had varying degrees of sickness. Redeemer has been through the madness of the end of year assessments and closing procedures. We’ve also said farewell to the Year 12’s and some staff, and enjoyed the celebration services. We’ve been stressed, and experienced joy. There have also been interesting times for my own family as we considered our future. Through all of this, the presence of God was very real. God was there in the midst of it; sometimes obviously, sometimes less so. We have leant on him for strength in difficult times and celebrated in thankfulness with him the good times. Some of the things that have happened have been the stuff of ordinary life, and some have been significant for the people involved. However, none of them has made the front page of the papers. These are comparatively ordinary events, not world-changing ones. They are important enough to us, but in the wider scheme of things can be small. That’s ok. God is with us anyway. In a sense, that is one of the lessons of Christmas. God is prepared to come in the person of a baby, to an ordinary family, and be born into poor circumstances, just to be with us. Jesus, as he grew up, grew in the ordinary way, alongside ordinary folk. His parables show how deeply he engaged with ordinary life. God does not necessarily come into the 6 o’clock news summary. He does not always choose the morning newspaper headlines, which we read with voyeuristic interest, but no real personal engagement. Instead, he comes into our lives, in the normal, ordinary, ins and outs of our existence, to speak a message of ultimate concern to us. He comes to make even the ordinary extraordinary, and to affirm that what we are, and have, and do is important to him. I hope that as you come to celebrate Christmas this year you may be able to see in amongst all the rush, what a gift it is to know that God is in it with you. Whether your Christmas is one of the more significant ones, or whether it is just the ordinary stuff of life, God is there for you. Of course, he is not just there at Christmas, but always. However, at Christmas, in the baby lying in a manger, it is more obviously so, and that can be a reminder of what is true all year long. The Lord be with you. A New Look Sub-school Structure

Redeemer will change its sub-school structure from the start of 2014. This is an exciting change which will build on Redeemer’s strengths and bring enhanced opportunities for students. The background to Redeemer deciding to review the overall structure of the College was the State Government’s decision to shift Year 7 from the Primary Years into the Secondary Years which was part of the State Government’s initiative known as “A Flying Start for Queensland Children” or, in contemporary speak, the ‘Flying Start’ program. This means that from 2015, the Queensland Government will officially recognise Year 7 as the first year of high school. Moving Year 7 to the Secondary years of schooling is supported by Queensland’s state, Catholic and independent school sectors and is a significant reform that will benefit students at all Queensland schools. Redeemer commenced a review of its sub-school structures in 2010 and over time this process came to involve two special research and planning committees, staff and parent surveys, nation-wide school visits. In 2012, after closely considering the extensive information gathered and after much discussion, it was decided to change Redeemer’s sub-school structures from 2015 onwards, with detailed planning to take place during 2013 and 2014. As 2013 unfolded, it became apparent to Redeemer’s College Council that in order to best position Redeemer in the market place, the changes planned for 2015 should take effect in 2014. To this end, Redeemer’s planning for its new sub-school structures and programs stepped up a gear this year.

From 2014 onwards Redeemer will have two sub-schools, each sub-school also incorporating two Programs. Early Years Prep – Year 2

Junior School Prep – Year 6 Upper Primary Years Years 3-6

Middle Years Years 7-9

Senior School Years 7-12 Senior Years Years 10-12

During all stages of planning, Redeemer’s intention has always been to protect and build on the College’s strengths, rather than merely making expedient structural changes to Redeemer. The new structures will be under-pinned by new and more extensive Pastoral Care staff positions from Prep to Year 9 and the already strong Junior School academic leadership and management will be further enhanced by the addition of the new position, Curriculum Leader Prep to Year 6.

While the Middle School will no longer be classified as a dedicated sub-school, the College’s commitment to students in the ‘Middle Years’ of schooling has never been stronger. The original vision and goals of the Middle School is to be commended and I am pleased to assure you that the vision and goals will be incorporated into the new structure. The following priorities will continue to be Redeemer’s focus, providing stability in this time of change.

A New Look Sub-school Structure cont... Remaining an excellent school Whatever a student’s talents and abilities are, we will work with them and their parents to achieve their highest possible outcome during their time at Redeemer; whether their pathway be traditional academic or vocational.

Genuine Care Redeemer’s very good pastoral care system of supporting students socially, spiritually and academically will remain and be extended; with a focus on greater individual support, monitored transitioning through the various stages of schooling, and further developing a sense of belonging to the college overall, and their year level.

Engagement and Expectations Student’s engagement with regards to lessons, assemblies, chapels, and break times will continue; expectations with regards to students giving their best to all that they do will remain; and Redeemer will continue with its Christian teachings and traditions.

Enhanced Changes Most students at Redeemer will not experience any great change apart from the normal roll over of year level and some small changes regarding classes, chapel, and assemblies. These changes will be well communicated with students. Weekly student activities will continue to include Chapel, Assemblies, lessons (naturally), as well as co-curricular opportunities.

Facilities Redeemer will continue to provide the best possible facilities that it can; facilities will continue to evolve across the college in line with age-related educational and sociological needs. The new structures and programs of Redeemer for 2014 and beyond have been planned and will be implemented using the following five principles which are student focused:

Student wellbeing There will be a strong focus on pastoral care. Pastoral care is nurturing strong and positive relationships with students, parents and the school. The new Pastoral Care

structure of the School will further enhance support for students across the school. Specific programs within the two subschools will ensure that student needs are met in an age appropriate way. Students will be supported as they adjust to new routines and greater academic demands. Across the College, pastoral care staffing positions have been increased to further assist students. As always, the Home Group teacher will continue to be the first point of contact for students and parents. Pastoral Care Leaders will support students in academic, social, emotional and spiritual areas. The role of Pastoral Care Leaders will continue to have an emphasis on holistic development, developing the individual, showing support, encouragement and care for the total personal well-being of each student, as well as their academic progress. Pastoral Care Leaders and teachers will work in partnership with parents. There will be support from Counsellors and Chaplains available when and where necessary.

Quality teaching Teachers working with students at all year levels will work to challenge and support students appropriately for their age, level of learning, and in line with national and state curriculum initiatives, incorporating changing technologies. Redeemer’s academic program will continue to challenge students and it will continue to be Redeemer’s core practice. The academic aim of the College will continue to be to provide rigorous academic instruction and learning at all year levels in line with past practice and tradition. The roll-out of the Australian Curriculum will continue and Redeemer remains committed to enhancing teaching and learning opportunities for students in order that Redeemer’s high standards are maintained while at the same time, new developments keep Redeemer Lutheran College at the very forefront of education in Australia. The existing school culture of expecting students to do their best within Christian values and teachings will continue. In line with contemporary development in curriculum delivery, next year will see the introduction of a Curriculum Leader P-6 to further strengthen teaching and learning in the Primary Years. To further enhance learning, Redeemer will introduce a Learning Management System (LMS), My Big Campus for students in Years 5-12. The LMS will provide an electronic or internet extension of the classroom

providing twenty four hour connectivity from any location globally with internet access. My Big Campus will also allow a high degree of parent monitoring and for both students and parents it will provide enhanced communication between home and school as well as peer learning, student to student.

Distinct identity Students will continue to develop their sense of belonging, security and pride in the learning and social areas that are provided for them. Students will be encouraged and supported to develop healthy identities relating to year level, sub-school, House and the College as a whole. Distinct physical locations will also be incorporated with Simpfendorfer Drive (the College’s internal road) separating the two sub-schools.

Student leadership opportunities There will be new programs for Student Leadership, Peer Mentoring as well as Transitioning students at critical points on

the P-12 journey from 2014. To further assist students with socialization, personal development and leadership development, Redeemer’s camping or learning experiences will expand to provide a camp or learning experience at every year level from Year 3 to Year 11. Leadership programs and roles for students will be further developed in the coming years. House Captain positions will be awarded in the Junior School and in the Senior School. There will be 1 boy and 1 girl per House in the Junior and Senior School. The House Captain positions closely align with each other in both sub-schools. Student Council Representatives are selected for both subschools. Student Council Committees will operate in the Junior School from Years 3-6 and in the Senior School in Years 7-12. Student Council is another opportunity for students to develop leadership and communication skills. Peer Mentoring opportunities will be given to students in various year levels to mentor other students. Prep and Year 5 students will continue as it currently runs with the

Year 5 students mentoring the incoming Prep students. Year 6 and Year 8 students – this mentoring program will assist Year 6 students as they transition to the Senior School the following year. Year 9 and Year 11 students – this mentoring program will help Year 9 students as they transition to the School in 2014. Transitioning experiences will be developed. Our incoming Prep students are provided with two orientation days to prepare them for school, held in November prior to their commencement at school and in January before the school year begins. In 2014 we will also provide transitions throughout Semester 2 for the Year 6 students to assist them to be ready for entering the Senior School. An Orientation Day for Year 6 will also be held in Term 4 to prepare them for the transition into Year 7 the following year.

Parent and community involvement Redeemer wants parents to stay connected with their students’ learning across the College and new technologies will further

assist this process. Parent involvement in assemblies, special events, award ceremonies and leadership presentations will be welcomed. Assemblies and Chapels will all be located early in the day to allow parents to attend. Parent and Community involvement is encouraged across the school. The strong parent-school partnerships that are established in the Junior School will be continued through to Senior School. Parent involvement through co-curricular activities is strongly encouraged and an important part of community development. The new Learning Management System will enable parents and teachers to engage with students learning both within and outside school time. In summing up, Redeemer’s College Council is confident that these changes best position Redeemer for the State-wide changes coming in 2015 as well as providing Redeemer’s students with very high quality learning that is contemporary and relevant. Junior School News As we near towards the end of the school year, it is always good to reflect upon the events and activities that made it special. My favourite event this year was Book Week. Book Week concludes with a day filled with fun activities for the students, based on the nominated books by The Children’s Book Council of Australia. There is always a lot of thought as to the type and variety of activities each teacher organises. However, what always amazes me is the great effort that teachers make to create a costume that is unique to the theme each year. Mrs Kelli McKeiver Head of Junior School

Middle School News Farewell Redeemer Middle ‘School’ The Middle School students and staff farewelled their place of learning and working in a celebratory style with a student-focused Christmas Concert and a Staff Christmas lunch in the last days of the 2013 school year. The Middle School students enjoyed a contemporary Christmas story play performed by keen actors from Years 6, 7 8. The play was directed by Miss Tamara Rogers, Year 8 Middle School drama teacher and the Christmas music and carols were presented by the Year 6 Band under the directorship of Mrs Christie Fleming, with Mr David Law as conductor. At the concert event several students were able to reflect on their time in Middle School and shared speeches and powerpoint presentations about the experiences they enjoyed the most whilst they were in the Middle School. Megan Chen shared her experiences from Year 6 and 7 with the sub-school and passionately told of the highlights and opportunities that she engaged with whilst she was at the Middle School. Mrs Stock, the Head of Middle School gave her impressions of the year and gave a positive tribute to Mrs Judy Powell the founding Head of Middle School for her work in building such a wonderful sub-school for our Redeemer students. Mrs Stock also reflected on the Community Day, Home Group class led Chapel messages and the ALWS fundraiser events.

Mineka Vedamuttu mentioned each Middle School staff member in her thank-you speech and Joshua Spyropoulos concluded with an acrostic poem about “MIDDLE SCHOOL”. He said a fond farewell to Middle School but also raised the spirits of the students by stating how awesome the Middle Years Program will be for all of them in 2014. Middle School staff celebrated and farewelled the Middle School through sharing happy memories with past staff and honouring Mrs Judy Powell as the founding Head of Middle School and Mrs Vicki Francis as one of the founding teachers. Teachers and staff reminisced about the Middle School and shared their happy memories of special events that they had shared and planned together for the Middle School community. We celebrate in thanking all who were involved in the Middle School over these past 15 years and praise God for the blessing that this sub-school has been in promoting Christian care, quality education, relationships, community spirit, leadership and support to the Redeemer Lutheran College students, families and staff. Together we move forward in 2014 to the Middle Years Program within the Senior School and we look forward to the Directorship of Mr Michael Trott under the leadership of Mrs Anastasia Strong, as we continue to serve Christ and reassure our community that “Our Hope is in Christ”. Senior School News In reflecting on 2013, I feel blessed to have worked with a student leadership team that did an amazing job. Our Captains were a positive, motivated and passionate team and they were excellent role models for the younger students. I commend students who have worked hard to achieve their personal best in their academic studies this year. The year for all students involved balancing assignment due dates, completing homework and set tasks and spending hours studying for exams. Their commitment and efforts will be reflected in their end of year reports and outstanding achievements were recognised at the Valedictory, Celebration Ceremony and in the 2013 academic honours lists. Interhouse competitions provided the opportunity for Lavarack, Mansfield, Ramsay and Wilson to compete in many events. Whilst all Houses showed passion and effort, Wilson were triumphant in retaining the Senior School House Shield in 2013.

Our students have participated in a variety of co-curricular activities this year and we have had some awesome achievements in the sporting and cultural arena. I thank the students, teachers and parents for their ongoing support and commitment to our co-curricular programs. Service to others is a very important focus at Redeemer. This year, students focussed on helping many community groups and organisations through a variety of fundraising activities. Students served in many ways, these included a concert to raise money for flood affected Lutheran schools, donating items for the Christmas Box appeal, cycling many kilometres to raise funds for the Leprosy foundation and selling butterfly arm bands in aid of the Hear and Say Centre for deaf children. The Year 12 male students also did their bit and volunteered to shave their heads and wax their legs in support of World’s Greatest Shave – a memorable event for many! I would like to thank the Senior School community including students, teachers, staff and parents for their support this year and pray that the Lord keeps you safe during your holidays and travels. Community Service at Redeemer As Charles Dickens once said “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” The Community Service Committee is one of the most active student committees at Redeemer. This year, it consisted of students from Years 9 to 12. In the Term 1, there was involvement from the Junior and Middle Schools as they helped assist the committee in creating small Easter Egg gifts. These gifts were personally delivered by some committee members to “The Plains” nursing home where we were able to hand out our gifts to the residents. We also gave over 900 gifts to Rochedale Meals on Wheels, Trinder Park Nursing Home, Shailer Park Meals on Wheels, Arcare at Logan and Warrigal Road and Tall Trees Rochedale. St John’s Lutheran Primary School at Bundaberg was happy to receive our gifts also as they recovered from the devastating floods. The next event held by the 2013 committee was Butterfly Week. This involved selling butterfly bracelets and brooches in support of the Hear and Say Centre. The amazing support of the school community was evident with over $2,000 raised. A very popular annual event for the committee is ReCykle for the Leprosy Mission, where each Senior School House has a team that cycle flat out for 30 minutes to see who can go the furthest distance. A total of over $600 was raised this year for the Leprosy Mission, through a sausage sizzle, soft drink and donut stall. We were able to purchase one wheelchair, two toilets, two children’s scholarships, two chickens, two goats and six pairs of protective shoes. It was awesome!

Over $400 was also raised in May at the Senior School’s Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council despite the extremely wet weather on the day. In the Term 4, the committee’s largest and most anticipated event. Redeemer’s World’s Greatest Shave, was up and running. Everyone loved seeing the Year 12 boys step up to have their legs waxed, heads shaved or have both done. Despite the fist clenching and screams of pain when the wax strips were pulled off, the success of the event was reflected in the over $2,900 that was raised. All money raised was donated to the Leukemia Foundation. This was a tremendous effort considering the short time we had to fundraise. A big thank you to all members of the committee, the Year 12 boys, the teachers who helped out and to every single person in the community that donated their money. A record number of shoe boxes filled with toys, toothbrushes, pencils etc will be going to children in Vietnam and Papua New Guinea in response to our Operation Christmas Child Appeal for 2013. Over 100 boxes were assembled and lots of extra bags of goodies were donated. This has been an annual tradition at Redeemer for many years now. All these successes would not have been possible without everyone’s valuable contribution towards all events. This support has definitely helped make 2013 an enjoyable and rewarding year for the Community Service Committee. Natasha Shami Year 12 (2013)

A Year of Music Redeemer Music Sets Records Students in the co-curricular music ensembles have seen some remarkable results at the 2013 Redlands Eisteddfod, with Senior and Middle School students setting a new record and Junior Choir achieving their own special milestone. Our College vocal ensembles saw great success in the first week of the competition. Redeemer Voiceworx (with more Year 8 singers than ever before!) received a Highly Commended, The Fellas (also bigger than ever!) placed third and Redeemer Chorale placed second, missing out by just one point. In what is an exciting first for Junior Choir, they were awarded first place in a jam-packed section of young singers from many different schools. Senior Singers also delivered a stirring and very musical performance, placing first in the alwayscompetitive Choral Championship. Redeemer’s instrumental ensembles performed exceptionally well and also saw remarkable results. Chamber Strings gave an inspiring performance of some very challenging repertoire and placed first in the Open String Ensemble section, with a score of 95 points. Junior Concert Band, in their first ever outing to the Redlands Eisteddfod, placed second and Year 6 Band, with the current Year 5s cheering them on, gave a rousing performance and placed first. Intermediate Concert Band performed the most difficult piece they have ever learned, Gadget, and placed first with 95 points.

Stage Band gave an enthralling performance and was unlucky to place second by just one point, despite scoring a huge 95 points. It was Senior Concert Band, however, that set the Redlands Eisteddfod on fire this year. Performing On A Hymnsong of Philip Bliss and the amazing Arabian Dances, they gave one of their greatest performances and placed first with a unforgettable score of 97.

These are truly extraordinary results and, worth noting, it is the first time that a single school has won the Open Strings section, the Choral Championship and the ‘A Grade’ Band section in the same year. Redeemer Music blows Melbourne away! During the September holidays, Redeemer Music took Melbourne by storm. Nine staff and 98 students in six ensembles delivered tremendous performances and created life-long memories. Students performed at five schools culminating in a spectacular set of performances at Federation Square. Other highlights in a very busy few days included trips to the Melbourne Zoo, the Old Melbourne Gaol, King Kong the Musical, Victoria Markets, the National Gallery, the MCG, lunch on Lygon Street, and the astonishing Great Ocean Road. Our students were exceptional ambassadors for the College, and for Queensland. We can be very proud of everything they have achieved. Redeemer’s Year 9 students once again experienced their Outdoor Education Program at Camp Tuchekoi on the edge of the Noosa Hinterland and Mary River Valley throughout Terms 3 and 4. Redeemer’s Outdoor Education Program aims to extend our students’ learning to subjects outside of a classroom, and to help them develop physically, emotionally, and socially. Junior School Swimming Carnival The Junior School Interhouse Swimming Carnival was held at Redeemer Pool on Friday 15 November 2013. Congratulations to Lavarack House for taking our first place with 319 points!

During the second week of the September school holidays, close to 1,000 staff from 86 Lutheran schools from across Australia, as well as visitors from Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the United States joined to celebrate Lutheran Education at the fourth Australian Conference on Lutheran Education (ACLE). This conference is held every four years and aims to celebrate Australian Lutheran Education, inspire those who work in and support Australian Lutheran Education, and provide quality professional development to staff. Redeemer students featured prominently on the second day of the conference. Christian Dance students from Years 3-7 helped set the tone for start of day worship while Year 11 students Emma Bones, Matilda Loch and Riley Martyn participated in a Q & A session with American educator Alan November regarding learning processes in the age of new technology, all undertaken via video link from the United States. Three Year 12 Film & TV students, Nicola Kelly, Tonia Wright and Natalia Didovich gave up three days of their holidays working tirelessly to produce and present ACLE-TV, an in-house TV studio that was created for the conference!

Staff and students currently utilise a variety of ICTs to enhance teaching and learning (Smart Boards, Blogs, Padlet, Turnitin, iPads, eBooks etc). In 2014 we will be providing a new Learning Management System (LMS) to further enhance the educational experience and outcomes at Redeemer. The product that has been selected is called My Big Campus (MBC) and it will provide teachers, students and parents the ability to embrace Web 2.0 technologies in the classroom and at home. There are many benefits and features that an LMS such as My Big Campus provides and while not all of these will be utilised immediately, it does offer the following.

Teachers and Students will: • Have access to excellent teacher developed and shared resources in its Resource Library. • Have the ability to deliver content (documents, media, links etc) at any time though this web-based platform. • Have a better way of accessing educational videos on YouTube. Teachers can enter YouTube links to the resource library, but the additional links, peripheral images, comments and ads are stripped away. • Have a safe and secure online extension of the classroom that’s designed specifically for educational purposes. • Be able to engage in collaborative learning through groups, wiki pages, discussions, blogs, closed messaging and more. • Extend class discussions online so even the quietest students may participate. • Have access to cloud file storage.

Parents will: • Have access to information and an insight into their student’s learning journey. • Assignment task sheets and due dates will be readily available. • Homework will be posted on MBC so you never have to again ask “Do you have any homework?” • Be able to see examples of your child’s work online. We’ll be using My Big Campus in a variety of ways to teach students about internet safety, digital citizenship and online communication skills. Redeemer’s Race around the Ekka On Tuesday 13 August, 11 Year 12 Film and Television students, participated in Race around the Ekka. Race around the Ekka is an annual film competition run by the RNA and supported by Energex. Teams have 24 hours to make a 30 second advertisement for the Ekka. The creative brief this year was to include “Get your buzz from the Ekka, not from Electricity.” Redeemer entered two teams. The first team was Alana Gibson, Emma Velthius, Rebekah Pollock, Nicola Myatt and Nicola Kelly. The second team was Kate Lawson, Ned Bowden, Alex Groves, Tonia Wright, Natalia Didovich and Curtus Vidulich. After a safety brief, the teams split up to literally race around the Ekka and hunt around for the perfect shots. They bought dagwood dogs, strawberry sundaes, went on rides, played with cows and fought through crowds to capture the best of the Ekka. After a stressful day of editing on the public holiday, both teams finished in time to submit our entries. Both had produced amazing productions, especially for the limited amount of time they had! Redeemer Wildlife We are fortunate to be part of a school with such a range of wildlife within our community! Recent sightings over the past few months have included the following: 1. Echidna – located in the gardens between the Senior School Resource Centre and SL Block. 2. Koala – located in the tree at the front of College Administration. Koala’s have been regularly spotted in trees around Redeemer over the years. Students from the early years will remember a Koala affectionately known as Elizabeth! 3. Turtle – A turtle was rescued from our iconic pond (together with goldfish and a number of blue claw crayfish) during a major cleanout earlier in December. Our resident turtle has just been named ‘Myrtle the Turtle’ following a recent poll on our Facebook page. Welcome Myrtle!

Year 7 Canberra Tour: Unforgettable!

On Saturday, 27 July we left from Redeemer, bound for Sydney. The next morning, at Sydney, we looked at all the exquisite animals at Taronga Park Zoo before catching a ferry to Circular Quay where we had lunch. From there we went on another bus trip to Canberra where we had our accommodation for the week. On Monday we visited the Australian Institute of Sport where we discovered an amazing room full of sport technology. After the AIS we set off to Old Parliament House. It was a very interesting building and an educational game taught us a lot about democracy. We visited the National Museum of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, and the National Dinosaur Museum before having dinner and going to sleep at Capital Country Holiday Park in Canberra.

Tuesday was an exciting day! We went to CSIRO where we had some stick insects crawl on us and learnt about sustainability and even did some experiments. We then went to Parliament House where we looked at all the official rooms (the House of Representatives and the Senate) before reenacting a parliamentary sitting in which I was the PM. After that we went to the Australian War Memorial where we learnt about heroic actions and watched the closing service which involved the Last Post along with wreaths being laid. We then watched a beautiful sunset from Telstra Tower before a good night’s rest. On Wednesday we woke up bright and early ready for a day at the snow. We picked up the snow gear and went tobogganing. It was great fun. There were also many flying snowballs.

Thursday brought even more surprises. We went to the Deep Space Communication Centre and learnt much about the planets, exploration and space. We then went to Questacon where some people went on a 360° spinning swing and other great discovery activities. Before heading home we went to Cockington Green Gardens which is filled with miniature buildings and scenes. We are grateful for the Australian Government’s PACER program that provided funding for each student towards the cost of our tour. Thank you to our parents for letting us go on this amazing trip, to our teachers who supervised us and for the bus drivers who got us there and back safely. We all had a wonderful time on the 2013 Canberra Tour. It was unforgettable. Zachary Healy 7TB

Mrs Kathy Stock Mrs Kathy Stock initially commenced her association with Redeemer Lutheran College as Campus Leader of St Mark’s Lutheran Primary School at Mt Gravatt. In 2009, Kathy commenced at Redeemer as an early Primary Years teacher.

In addition to serving as a teacher in both the Junior and Middle Schools, Kathy has also held the positions of Acting Head of Junior School, Assistant to the Head of Middle School, and Head of Middle School. Always willing to serve, Kathy has put her hand up for a range of committees and working groups and in 2010 she was the Administrative Coordinator for Redeemer’s Non-State School’s Accreditation process, overseen by LEQ. Kathy has also supported Redeemer in a variety of co-curricular activities with her real passion being Christian Dance. Kathy, we wish you God’s richest blessings for your new position as Deputy Principal at Grace Lutheran Primary School and thank you for your years of service to Redeemer Lutheran College. 4

Mrs Michelle Rautio – 15 ½ Years Following 15 ½ years of loyal service to Redeemer Lutheran College, we are sad to farewell Mrs Michelle Rautio. Michelle commenced working at Redeemer Lutheran College in 1998, initially as Development Assistant to the Director of Development. In 2008 Michelle’s role changed to College Receptionist. Michelle’s role over the years has also included Facilities Officer and a volunteer Director of Redeemer Foundation. Junior School students from Prep to Year 5 have again enjoyed being involved in this activity in 2013. Each term student year level groups were able to come together each Monday to learn several dances and then present these as part of worship in a Junior School Chapel worship time and a Sunday Children’s Service with the congregation at Our Saviour Lutheran Church. The year level groups involved changed each term enabling many students to have the opportunity to participate in Christian Dance within the year. In Term 4, the Year 1 and 2 Christian Dance group had the special privilege of presenting the Christmas Medley dance at the end of year Junior School Celebration Ceremony as well as the “Men in White” kid’s Christmas Service at Our Saviour on Sunday 1 December.

Playgroup Graduation Our Saviour Playgroup celebrated the end of 2013 with a Christmas break up party in December where we farewelled 13 of our little people who will move on to school/kindy in 2014. Our Saviour Playgroup meets every Tuesday morning during Redeemer school terms. Children under school age and their parents are welcome to join us from 8.30am-10.30am in the Redeemer Multi-Purpose Centre Auditorium (MPC). On Sunday evenings at 6.00pm there is a service which provides worship opportunities of a more informal kind often with a youth emphasis. Andrew Hellinga (84) has smashed the world record for the longest distance travelled backwards in a 24 hour period at the Holden Driving Centre, Norwell on 7 October 2013. The new, yet to be verified, world record is 337km - an astonishing effort for an amazing cause - the kids supported by the Eagles Wings project in Zambia. Speaking when he broke the world record at 5pm on the 7th Andy said “I was inspired by my mate Reid Anderton, who broke the world record for cycling a bicyce in 37 days around our country, a massive effort and a massive heart for children who live in poverty. I too am an advocate for children living in poverty in the country of Zambia and that is the sole reason why I have chosen to ride backwards today”. Andy was attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest distance cycling backwards in 24 hours. Currently this is 180km. This sounds crazy, but as part of his efforts for the NZ Challenge, it is his unique way to raise awareness and funds for children living in poverty.

Tim Spilsbury (00) was ordained as a Pastor of the Lutheran Church of Australia on 9 December 2012 and is currently serving the Whyalla Lutheran Parish in South Australia. Ken Schultz (third from left), a former staff member of the Redeemer Grounds team in 2010, was ordained on the same day, and was installed into the Alice Springs Lutheran Church.

James Flynn (2003) James Flynn (03) has recently returned from working in the Loulo Gold Mine in Mali in West Africa for 8 weeks training local mining engineers in the latest practices for planning and scheduling. It was a great experience filled with many challenges and he looks forward to the next challenge in his career.

Lee Spurr (2004) Lee Spurr (04) was drafted to the Fremantle Dockers AFL Club in the 2011 Rookie Draft after winning two premierships with Central District in the SANFL. On Saturday 28 September 2013, Lee played back pocket in the AFL Grand Final at the MCG against Hawthorn. 3

Alison Wishart (88) is currently working at the Australian War Memorial as the Senior Curator of Photographs. Redeemer’s Year 7 students had the privilege to meet her on Tuesday 30 July 2013 while our students were visiting the Australian War Memorial as part of the Year 7 Canberra Tour. Prior to her current role as Senior Curator at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Alison worked as a curator at the Museum of Tropical Queensland in Townsville,

In November 2013, Lee signed a one-year contract extension that will see him commit to the club through to end of the 2015 season. Spurr emerged as a quality small defender in 2013, with arguably the best performance of his career in Fremantle’s stirring Qualifying Final win against Geelong at Simonds Stadium. Spurr had 29 disposals, 10 marks and a goal in the victory.

Drew Cambridge (07) went straight into ‘Aviation Australia’ at Eagle Farm College, and completed the 2008 year with an achievement of being part way into the apprenticeship as an Aircraft Mechanical Engineer. An offer to begin with British Aerospace (BAE) came up in October 2009 at Archerfield Airport in Brisbane. He did some fixed wing aircraft, but the main job at Archerfield was on the Army’s Blackhawk helicopters. Drew has now worked on every Blackhawk that Australia owns. In September 2010 Drew transferred to Nowra NSW where he was immediately attached to BAE Nowra, but was frequently on base at HMAS Albatross, the Navy base where he was also given the opportunity to work on every Seahawk helicopter that Australia owns. 12 months later, Drew was offered the prestigious position of Naval Aviator, as an officer in RAN. Drew is currently finalising the initial training at HMAS Creswell in Jervis Bay, ACT. Drew was invited as a new Naval Officer, to attend the warships journey from Jervis Bay up to Sydney Harbour for the recent International Fleet Review celebrating 100 years anniversary of Australia’s Navy, 1913-2013.

Andrew Roiko (2008) Andrew Roiko (08) is currently in the Queensland Open Men’s Indoor Cricket team and was selected into the Australian Men’s Team at the National Titles held earlier this year. Andrew has recently returned from Sri Lanka competing in the Tri Nations Indoor Cricket Championships as a member of the Australian Men’s team. Australia competed with a very strong side and was successful in winning the title. Andrew had a very successful tour for his first overseas trip in attaining a man of the match trophy along with the best batsman of the series.
