Mental Health Awareness Redding Rancheria
Did you know 1 in 5 adults will experience mental illness this year? Many of us experience a mental health condition or know someone personally who receives care for a mental illness. Every year, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) promotes Mental Illness Awareness Week during the first week of October. Oftentimes, there is much silence and shame surrounding mental health that prevents people from seeking help. Suicide Prevention Every 28 seconds someone attempts suicide. American Indian and Alaskan Natives are at the highest risk of suicide. Knowing the warning signs can save a life. The following is a list of suicide risk behaviors:
•
Becoming preoccupied with death.
•
Engaging in high risk behavior.
•
Obtaining a weapon or other means of self-harm.
•
Totally withdrawing from life, loved ones, or activities.
• Increasing drinking, painkiller usage or excessive medication use.
•
Seeming overwhelmed after childbirth or talking about harming a new infant.
•
Being hopeless about their financial or work situation.
•
Being devastated by a relationship problem or breakup.
•
Being distraught over uncontrollable gambling.
•
Giving away belongings.
•
Dramatic mood swings.
•
Saying goodbye to friends and family.
•
Distress about gender identity or sexuality.
Hopelessness is the most common symptom leading to a suicide attempt. Statements like “My family would be better off without me,” “I wish I were dead,” or “My life is unbearable and will never get better” must be taken seriously. These type of comments suggest serious symptoms that can be helped with treatment. Starting the conversation Breaking the silence is the first step toward hope and healing. If you recognize someone who is at risk, mention the things that are concerning you. For example, “You have been acting really down lately” or “You’ve been missing a lot of work and seem distracted when you are at the office.” You can also be direct. Talking about suicide does not increase suicide risk! You can ask someone, “Have things gotten so desperate, that you are thinking about suicide?” or “Have you ever thought of killing yourself?” Remind the person that help is available and treatment works. Listen and remain calm.
