November 2020

Message from glen Redding Rancheria Dear patients,

Together, we are facing a truly unprecedented situation and we have all had to adapt to the new reality. The global coronavirus pandemic is affecting our families, our communities, and our businesses. Indeed, it affects our perspective and way of life. The Reding Rancheria Tribal health system has been busy over the past 7 months ensuring our employees are safe while also delivering uninterrupted healthcare to our patients. We have made it a priority to help all of our patients through these stressful times. We have seen the massive impact this coronavirus has had on all of us: from social distancing, families being isolated, to illness that seems to know no age limits. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been impacted by the virus, directly or indirectly. The safety of our employees and patients is our first priority and for the last 7 months our employees having been working hard to make sure we continue to deliver the highest level of compassionate care the Redding Rancheria is known for. In the midst of these uncertain times, we have also seen the amazing power of positivity and kindness throughout our organization. I am very touched and proud of how our employees, are stepping up even more than usual to engage in acts of generosity, compassion for each other and support of our community. We understand these times are difficult and while we are celebrating acts of kindness and positivity, many of our friends and families are struggling with health issues and other concerns. Our hearts go out to all those who are affected, to our healthcare workers and all essential employees who help keep our lives going. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Please stay safe, wear a mask and stay home when you can. Warmest regards, Glen Hayward Executive Director Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System

For many years – and especially in this difficult year – we are so grateful for their generosity,” said Megan Conn, Program Officer at Community Foundation of the North State. Tracy Edwards, Chief Executive Officer at the Redding Rancheria says, “We are proud to play our part in the community by distributing grants in the Spring and Fall each year. Decision-making is always difficult as needs far outweigh our ability to fully fund each request.” With the recent major impacts from COVID-19 and wildfires in the region, the Rancheria is honored to offer support for projects that address: • Native Americans – with diverse programs including amplifying native voices on the radio to helping increase school attendance among high schoolers • Youth – from playroom supplies for child victims of abuse to new school curriculum materials, coats and other warm gear for winter, and the many projects supporting our region’s youngest community members • Rural populations - particularly those facing challenges due to wildfire, through disaster assistance and gear for first responders “We are dedicated to supporting worthy causes in our region and know there will be additional opportunities in the future,” said Edwards. “Nonprofit organizations can look to apply in our next grant cycle in the Spring of 2021.” Since the Redding Rancheria Community Fund was established at the Community Foundation, over $3.5 million in grants have been awarded. See attached details of awarded grants in the Fall 2020 cycle or visit https://cfnorthstate.org/grants/redding-rancheria-community-fund/ The Community Foundation makes charitable giving easy and effective by creating permanent funds that help the region meet the challenges of changing times. STRESS RELIEF ACTIVITIES FOR CAREGIVERS Redding Rancheria

Journaling can strengthen your immune system, improve cognitive functioning, and relieve stress. Writing your thoughts and feelings is one of the best ways to “let go” and reduce stress. Meditation and deep breathing has been shown to decrease anxiety, improve cardiovascular health, and facilitate relaxation that improves overall health. Aromatherapy can improve relaxation and sleep, strengthen the immune system, increase circulation, boost energy, and reduce anxiety. Coloring uses both sides of the brain and can improve your mental, emotional, and intellectual health. Nutrition is one of the body’s main sources of fuel and can help you handle stress better, increase energy, and improve the immune system. Social SUPPORT can minimize the effects of stress and enhance your resilience to stress. Exercise on a daily basis (aim for 20-30 minutes) can reduce stress and depression by increasing your brain’s endorphins (natural pain killers and mood enhancers). Exercise also improves sleep which helps your body heal and recover from stress. Hobbies like fishing, kayaking, crafts, and painting can provide an outlet for stress, minimize the impact of chronic stress, and improve overall mood by giving you something to look forward to after a long day or week. Treating yourself through activities like reflexology, self spa treatments, or a back rub from a friend helps your mind and body relax and recover from a stressful day. GAMES like horseshoes, board games, cards, or sports engage the mind and body to help relieve stress from “overthinking” or worrying. Classes are a way to increase your knowledge and reduce stress by giving you new tools and eliminating some of the “unknowns” in caregiving. Reading can help reduce stress, improve memory function, help you sleep, and decrease depression. LAUGH! It lowers stress hormones, relaxes muscles, improves mood, and eases anxiety.
