June 2020

Ground Breaking Ceremony Redding Rancheria On June 16th, 2020 Redding Rancheria commemorated the ground breaking of the new Trinity Health and Wellness Campus in Weaverville, CA. This campus is a $12,000,000 project and will be open to the public five days a week beginning in the summer of 2021. Redding Rancheria has hired the construction company Cerami and Browning to execute the plans for our new state of the art campus. This clinic is accessible to Native Americans and non-Native Americans alike who are Partnership Health, Medi-Cal, and Medicare recipients. We will be offering family medical care, urgent care and substance abuse treatment to those in need. In addition to counseling for substance abuse we will offer a medication-assisted recovery program using Suboxone for those addicted to prescription opioids and heroin. Available to all patients will be an urgent care for walk-in appointments and minor emergencies, dental care, cardiology, marriage and family counseling, behavioral health, endocrinology, psychiatry, and physical therapy. Our Tribal Health System’s Executive Director is very passionate about this project, and he’s excited to share it with all the community. His statement is as follows: “Generations ago, our ancestors negotiated federal treaties under the most difficult circumstances. Even then, they believed the health and welfare of their fellow Native Americans were paramount. They dreamed that, through the treaties, they could ensure the well-being of their descendants. They would be proud to see what our tribe has achieved today. Native Americans and the residents of Trinity County will use this facility to live healthier, better lives. Beyond that, we will have the simple yet deep satisfaction of knowing that Native Americans are taking care of Native Americans and the communities we serve.” Glen Hayward RN, BSN, MS Executive Director Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System

Happy 25 Years, Don Sheats! Redding Rancheria

Don Sheats has been with the Redding Rancheria for 25 years since March. He began working in Pull Tabs, moved on to become a Cage Clerk, and is now the Assistant Manager for the Surveillance Department. Don Sheats cannot say enough good things about the Tribe in how he is continually supported through the good and the tough times. He enjoys his job because of the challenge of protecting the Tribe’s assets. Don Sheats believes in the work he does, and appreciates all the Tribe has done for him. He says because of the Tribe, he was able to have his wife be a stay-at-home mom for their two adopted daughters. John Sheats is forever proud to play his part for Redding Rancheria! 3

What is Juneteenth? Redding Rancheria

Juneteenth is celebrated each year in the United States on June 19th to commemorate the effective end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was made by President Abraham Lincoln effective Jan. 1, 1863, it wasn’t until more than two years later when the Civil War ended on June 19, 1865, that many slaves actually became free. Celebrations of Juneteenth began as early as 1866 when church-centered community gatherings were held in Texas, where the Civil War had ended the previous year. Celebrations and commemorations quickly spread throughout the south and Juneteenth is now a state holiday in 47 states. Activists continue to call for national recognition of the holiday. With all of the current national focus regarding social justice and continued inequality in our country, it is important that we recognize the plight of African Americans in our country. Just as the Native Americans have a long and difficult history in the United States, our Black population has and continues to face inequality that has existed since their ancestors were brought against their will to our country. Please take time on June 19th to reflect on this important date in history and what it means today. -Tracy Edwards, CEO

Elder Abuse Month Redding Rancheria

How to observe Elder Abuse Awareness Month Know the symptoms of abuse. If an elder you know has recently lost weight or shows signs of confusion, malnutrition, or dehydration there could be a problem. Poor hygiene is also an indicator of self-neglect (if an elder lives alone) or there is possible abuse/neglect by a caretaker. Watch, too, for changes in the person’s mood; if they seem depressed, anxious, agitated, or listless, see if you can discover why. In short, any changes to an elder’s behavior, disposition or physical condition could be cause for concern. If you do detect signs of abuse, document them. Take pictures of bruises or injuries, get a statement from the victim or any witnesses, and keep a log of any suspicious behavior or circumstances. You can then address your concerns with a family member or manager if they are in a facility. Many seniors are not in a place to stand up for themselves, whether it’s because they’re physically frail or because they’re scared of speaking up for fear of repercussions. It’s crucial for all of us to be on the lookout for signs of elder abuse, physical or financial, and to speak up if something seems wrong. Share informational articles on Facebook and other social platforms. Shasta County’s Adult Protective Services cited these statistics for 2019: Total Reports of alleged abuse: 2,489 Of those 1,172 were confirmed, 372 inconclusive and 945 were unfounded. Of the 1,172 confirmed: 827 were financial abuse. 483 were self-neglect. 427 were mental/verbal abuse. If you suspect abuse, report it! Call Adult Protective Services at 225-5798 and you can remain anonymous. If the suspected abuse is in a nursing facility, you can call the State of California Ombudsman. Their contact information will be posted in the entry area.

Employee of the Month

John Tau

June 2020

Redding Rancheria would like to congratulate John Tau as Employee of the Month for the month of June. He is committed to keeping our workspaces clean and goes the extra mile by asking if we need anything additional taken care of on top of his standard workload. He took the time to let management know when he saw a situation that needed to addressed in the Finance Department. The tribe is so fortunate to have such an amazing employee who always has a positive attitude and a smile on his face. On behalf of Redding Rancheria we want to thank you, John, for all you do for our organization!

Congratulations John Tau!!!
