POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER? Redding Rancheria

What is Post-traumatic Stress Disorder? With June being the month of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, as well as, all of the upsetting events happening in our community and nation, it’s important to be informed about the impact of trauma on our emotional wellbeing. Post-traumatic stress disorder, or more commonly known as PTSD, is a Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorder that develops following a traumatic event. Traumatic events are frightening, stressful, or confusing life events such as, natural disasters, war, experiencing or witnessing violence or a violent act, bullying, a car accident, childhood neglect, varying types of abuse, and other adverse life experiences. What are the signs and symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder? Unlike asthma or a cold, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms are difficult to recognize and can feel like they are happening all in our mind. The traumatic event over stimulates our brain’s stress response symptom making it hypersensitive and responding to everyday occurrences as a threat or dangerous. Symptoms can begin to develop within 3 months of the event or can be delayed coming up years later during stressful times. Signs and symptoms of PTSD can range between mild to severe and can look like unexpected irritability, nightmares, feelings of guilt, fatigue, sadness, photo courtesy of petitemagique.wordpress.com anxious/fearful thoughts, excessive worry and/ or concern, feeling on edge, intrusive thoughts and feelings, anger, avoidance of people, places, and things that are reminders of the event, confusion, headaches, tightness in chest, trouble sleeping, and being easily distracted. Untreated symptoms can make typical daily living tasks such as, working, talking on the phone, going to the mall, grocery shopping, maintaining friendships and relationships, and school difficult. Who gets Post-traumatic Stress Disorder? Children and adults of all ages, socioeconomic status, nationalities, family backgrounds, academic success, and all other life variables can be afflicted with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health reports that according to the National Center for PTSD, about seven or eight of every 100 people will experience PTSD at some point in their lives and women can be more vulnerable than men to develop Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. How is Post-traumatic Stress Disorder treated? Although PTSD is very common with more than 3 million new cases in the US per year, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is a serious mental health condition and must be diagnosed by a licensed professional. While PTSD is often a silent disorder, it is fully treatable with the help of a professional. The Redding Rancheria provides support for those in our community suffering with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, offering services with trained behavioral health therapists. Trained professionals will provide treatment such as, helping someone build coping 2

PHARMACY NEWSLETTER JUNE 2019 Redding Rancheria

The Alzheimer’s Association has designated June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s is a type of memory loss that causes problems with thinking and behavior. Why is it important to get checked? Approximately 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and it is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and Alzheimer’s worsens over time. While Alzheimer’s has no cure, there are treatments for symptoms and early detection is key. Visit Alz.org for more information. Common Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer’s:

1.

Memory loss that disrupts daily life

2.

Changes in planning or solving problems

3.

Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home or work

4.

Confusion with time or place

5.

Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps

6.

Changes in mood and personality

7.

Difficulty remembering newly learned information

Many people have trouble with memory—this does not mean they have Alzheimer’s. Several of the above symptoms are needed for the diagnoses of Alzheimer’s. Early detection of Alzheimer’s may provide some relief of symptoms and help maintain a level of independence longer. If you notice these warning signs in yourself or someone you know, do not ignore them. Schedule an appointment with your doctor. ________________________________________________________________________________ Hello! CAMP YMCA AQUATIC Redding Rancheria

The annual summer youth camp has been hosted by the Community Health department for the last seven years. It is 30 new kids per week for 2 weeks out of one of a summer month where Community Health staff gets to spend time with some of our younger patients teaching them about healthy lifestyle choices. We swim with our kids, play court games, dodgeball, do crafts and educate them on how to make sustainable life choices to ensure that they grow up healthy and strong. We encourage participation, trying new things and making new friends by teaching them about our six guiding values. It is always beautiful to see the arc of the children from the first day, where they are shy and reserved to the last day, which we spend at the aquatic center, where they are adventuring around trying the diving board, slide and racing on the wibbit (floating obstacle course). Camp is for registered patients of the RRTHC who are between the ages of 8 and 12 years old at the time of camp. Registration begins in May. If you have any questions, please call Shayla in Community Health at 226-1787.
