THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL 2023
REDDING RANCHERIA HEAD START & CHILD CARE The first two weeks of August were busy at the Redding Rancheria Head Start and Child Care! 31 Head Start students, 17 Child Care students, and their parents attended the parent orientation on August 10th and 11th and first day of school on August 14th at the Redding Rancheria’s Preschool Center. There were hardly any tears from students although we did see a few watery eyes from parents. The staff at the preschool were so excited to welcome new and returning students as they integrate culture into the curriculum. This year’s staff include: Head Start & Child Program Manager – Hannah Hughes; Health and Disabilities Coordinator – Cassi Lawson-Pigott; Family Intake Coordinator – Angie Carter-Streiff; Family Child Care Coordinator – Marissa Phelan; Admin Assistant – Kianna BennerECE Teachers – Elizabeth Gomez, Gabriella Ward, and Kerry Randall ; ECE Assistants - Julie Bothwell, Priscilla Potter, Brandy Gemmill, and Taylor Burris; Food Service Worker – Tammie Powell; Bus Driver -Willie Reeves. Redding Rancheria Tribal Council Member and Elder Recognized for Serving on City Planning Committee Congratulations to our Tribal Council Member and Tribal Elder, Leon Benner for completing his 4-year term on the City of Redding Planning Committee. We appreciate Leon taking the time to serve his tribe and people; we applaud his commitment to building relationships and representing the Redding Rancheria. By taking part in the committee, Leon has helped address and create significant change in our community. During his time on the committee, Leon assisted with projects such as Shasta Community Health Center’s Women’s Clinic, Hartnell-Holiday Market Shopping Center, Panorama Park and Field House, Dignity Health Redding North State Pavilion Project and more. Leon provided an enthusiastic, highly informed, and professional voice in support of the City’s General Plan. Leon’s experience and expertise with construction provided a valuable perspective to staff and fellow commissioners. Leon has earned the respect of his fellow commissioners, city staff, and the city council for his dedication to the best interests of the city. WELCOME TO THE TEAM! -MICHAEL KELLY REDDING RANCHERIA
Hestum, My name is Michael Kelly and I am Winnemem Wintu Through my grandmother Mildred Rhoades, and my father Jack Elden Potter Sr. I am currently the Administrative Assistant for the Cultural department. My role here involves coordinating with different departments regarding cultural events, creating mail-out posters, and facilitating cultural events. I am also a tribal monitor, so this position allows me to gain a better understanding of the different government entities which we deal with, regarding the protection of cultural sites. I am a student at CSU Chico, where I have been working towards a B.A. in philosophy, and a minor degree in Native American Studies. I have been focused on improving my ability to clearly articulate myself when discussing Native American perspectives. Once I complete my B.A. it is my intention to go to law school so that I can bring that legal knowledge back to our tribe, and help other tribes where possible. With the support of my fiancé Kate, my children Tuq and Mille, and our tribe, I have been able to stay on the college Dean’s list for the last 2 years. At the end of the day, I like to play a game of pool, left hand versus right hand, which has helped me earn top shooter for Cottonwood last 8-ball season.

DISCOVERY HEALTH FAIR 2023 REDDING RANCHERIA TRIBAL HEALTH SYSTEM
On Wednesday, August 2, 2023 the Redding Rancheria hosted their Annual Discover Health Fair. The Win-River Resort & Casino Events Center and Redding Rancheria Community Center were full with nearly 100 health and wellness vendors, arts and craft dealers, and food artisans. Free health screenings and resources were provided to the residents of Shasta County by the staff of the Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System, ranging from diabetes pre-screens, blood pressure readings, body fat analysis, smoking cessation and more. Vitalant was on-site collecting lifesaving blood donations and achieved their goal for the blood drive. Thank you to all that donated. Guests enjoyed entertainment from Native American dancers, Northstate DinoRoars’ “Blue”, KIXE Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Cookie Monster, as well as numerous Star Wars characters. Additionally, the Tribal Health System hosted its first “Dunk-A-Doc” booth, providing fair-goers the opportunity to dunk medical providers in a water tank for charity. Response to the booth was overwhelmingly positive. All proceeds benefited One SAFE Place, a local organization that provides shelter, legal services, and emotional support to women and children affected by domestic violence. With over 400 people receiving health screenings and hundreds more who came to discover new health trends and information, the 2023 Discover Health Fair was a huge success.

REDDING RANCHERIA TRIBAL HEALTH SYSTEM Tribal Health Administers Sports Physicals for FREE for Special Olympics REDDING RANCHERIA TRIBAL HEALTH SYSTEM Tribal Health Administers Sports Physicals for FREE for Special Olympics Redding Rancheria Tribal Health Center recently had the privilege of conducting sports physical for local athletes in Shasta County’s Special Olympics program. The program had experienced difficulties reorganizing following Covid restrictions, and many of the athletes’ physicals had since expired. When our healthcare team learned there was a need to help Special Olympics’, we were happy to set up a sports physical clinic and offer our Tribe’s assistance. Overall, the clinic was a great success – our providers and Special Olympians had fun, we were able to provide numerous physicals, and the athletes are very excited to have the opportunity to play sports again. Special Thank you from Special Olympics: A huge thank you to the staff a Redding Rancheria Tribal Health Center for volunteering their time to give our Special Olympics athletes their physicals so they can play sports. Special thanks to Executive Director Glen Hayward, Dr. Kingsley, Patti Blair, Kaitlyn Soto, Raven Verville, and SaSha Seymore, for taking such great care of our athletes. Shasta County Special Olympics provides year-round sport programs: Basketball, Bocce, Tennis, Golf, Softball, Bowling, Soccer, and Flag Football. Our next tournament is for Bowling, Oct 7th, 9:00 am, at Shasta Lanes. Shasta County Special Olympics

YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM 2023 REDDING RANCHERIA This year’s Youth Leadership Program is a program Redding Rancheria is proud to offer young members of the Tribe. It truly was a phenomenal experience for everyone involved. The inspiring and nurturing of our children is vital for the future of our people and our culture. Our youth are the continuation of the works our ancestors lived for. Through our Leadership Program, we strive to teach the youth to look out for each other while caring for our home—to leave things better than we were given. Tribal youth are taught about Redding Rancheria history, how the tribal government functions and the great things that Redding Rancheria has to offer to its own community and the surrounding community. This program helps instill pride in the Native youth and give them a community to lean on.

The Chairman of the Redding Rancheria Jack Potter Jr., joined Secretary Deb Haaland and assistant secretary Brian Newland of the U.S. Department of the Interior at Graton Resort & Casino in Rohnert Park, CA. The U.S. Department of Interior is setting out for, “The Department of Interiors Road to Healing Tour” across the country to give survivors and descendants a chance to tell their stories that relates to the trauma that federal boarding schools have inflicted.
