STILLWATER POW WOW RELOCATES TO THE REDDING RODEO GROUNDS Redding R ancheria
The Redding Rancheria’s Stillwater Pow Wow is moving to the Redding Rodeo Grounds! We are proud to partner with the Redding Rodeo Association and thank them for donating the venue for this free event. We welcome EVERYONE to come experience the music, the dancing, the food, and the vendors! We hope to see you there!
WAYKEN-PANA ELPOM MURAL Redding Rancheria
Redding Rancheria would like to celebrate a recently completed indigenous mural in downtown Redding. One of the artists that worked on this piece is Vanessa Scholfield, who works as an LCSW at the Redding Rancheria Tribal Health Center: The artists of the “Wayken-pana Elpom” mural are Michelle Radcliff-Garcia, Carl Avery, and Vanessa Scholfield. Vanessa and Michelle are the design concept artists and Carl is a master muralist that helped to transform the design into this mural. The artists, along with our fearless leader Miki’ala Catalfano and many volunteers labored in the heat for two weeks to bring this to life. Michelle also was tasked with using the Wintu language to translate the English phrase, “Welcome to Redding” loosely into “Wayken-pana Elpom.” The mural features a Wintu youth in traditional regalia facing a healing hummingbird decorated with a basket design. There are two Earth planets encircled with fire and water designs to acknowledge part of the Wintu creation story. This project took four years to plan and execute. The mural is featured on the side of Cascade Theatre.
