CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH Redding Rancheria

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and we helped Pathways to Hope for Children set up 753 pinwheels on the lawn in front of the Win-River Mini Mart on the corner of Eastside and South Bonnyview. There is one pinwheel for each substantiated case of child abuse in our community. This is preventable! Together we can bring hope and healing to our community. The Redding Rancheria: •

RADIO INTERVIEW Redding Rancheria

This month Tracy Edwards, CEO of the Redding Rancheria was asked to be a guest on the new progressive radio talk show, Common Grounds. Common Grounds is hosted by Christian Gardinier. She was a co-guest with Elizabeth Betancourt, formerly a candidate for Assembly District 1. The topics on the show span over a wide range. The topic that Tracy and Elizabeth touched on was issues related to Tribal Sovereignty. Specifically they talked about Governor Newsome’s Executive Order that recognized the genocide that was perpetrated on Native American people in California and what that means to Tribes and Tribal people. They talked about some of the atrocities that happened to local Native people in this last century right here in our surrounding counties. They discussed the importance of people to recognize the horrible things that happened to Natives in our community and understand that when it comes to decision making in the Tribe. Tracy Edwards

BOX CAR 500 RACES

Redding Rancheria Head Start & Child Care In April the Redding Rancheria Head Start & Child Care held the annual Head Start 500- Box Car Race. Children, with the help of their parents, build their own personal vehicle out of a box. The building of the box car itself is a fun activity for child and parent, allowing him or her to get creative. Each box reflected the child’s personality or interests. Children started off the race week learning safety tips in the classroom and enjoying a Box Car Movie Drive-in! The children got to sit in their box cars and watch Mator Tails while eating popcorn. Parents were able to gather at the fence on Race Day or watch along on Zoom to cheer for their student as they raced around the playground on the bike path. Halfway through the race each child had to stop at the Pit Stop, fuel up with a drink of water and wipe the bugs off of their sunglasses. Every child received a trophy after passing through the finish line. Great job to all of our parents and students on building your Box Cars, a great race and good sportsmanship! Sara Zapata

COVID-19 MASS VACCINATION EVENT Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System

The Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System held another #COVID19 Mass Vaccination event on April 11th for those who were getting their final shot of the Moderna Vaccine. There was a total of 830 vaccinations given. Please visit RRTHS.org for more information about our mobile vaccination team or other opportunities to receive the COVID-19 Vaccination.

REDDING RANCHERIA COMMUNITY EDUCATION FUND

Education Assistance Program Supplemental assistance up to $300 per calendar year is provided to help adult students attend college, university or trade school. Each student may submit one request per calendar year. The funds may be used for reimbursement or paid directly to the school or vendor for tuition, books or other required materials. You must have a C (70%) or better to receive funds.

APPLICATION PERIODS: SPRING-JANUARY 1ST-JUNE 30TH FALL-JULY 1ST-DECEMBER 31ST Funds are limited for each intake period and are administered on a First Come First Serve basis.

REDDING RANCHERIA HEAD START & CHILD CARE Redding Rancheria

“The Week of the Young Child (WOYC) is an annual celebration of young children that takes place every April in Shasta County and in communities across the nation. WOYC recognizes how the early years of childhood form a foundation for children’s success in school and in life. A new collection of events and activities is available each year for children, families, and all community members to enjoy. This year the Redding Rancheria Head Start & Child Care chose to do a gardening event. The children helped to prepare the soil and plant vegetables in our children’s garden. They also planted some seeds in egg carton gardens to take home. In the Fall the children will return from Summer Break and be able to harvest their own vegetables. This hands on activity increases environmental awareness and vital problem solving while offering educational opportunities in a variety of developmental areas. This activity was made possible by a grant from First 5 Shasta.” Sara Zapata

We would like to congratulate our own Janiece Padilla, Community Health Nurse, for being chosen as the Employee of the Month for April 2021. Janiece Padilla received this award for the following reasons: She has recently taken on several new roles in addition to her regular tasks. She always completes anything asked of her with a positive attitude and a smile. Helping with the vaccine clinics is just one of her new tasks this year and with her past experience in helping with previous group clinics, her knowledge and dedication has been a key component to making co-workers and patients feel safe amongst all the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. Janiece is a very caring nurse who listens to her patients and makes them feel at ease. Whether it’s giving COVID

vaccination shots, working clinics or just being there to listen when patients come into community health to seek some human connection she is always 100% present to support them in whatever they need. If you got your vaccine, the odds are that Janiece help administer it. She is consistently going the extra mile, carefully reading all the information and making sure we all get our vaccines safely. She is working extra hours, coming in early and staying late if needed and overall she has worked very hard to pull all of the pieces of these new COVID vaccination clinics together. She is working as if she were two people! Congratulations Janiece Padilla!!!

MOBILE VACCINATION UNIT Redding Rancheria Tribal health System

The Redding Rancheria’s mobile COVID vaccine team provided the Johnson and Johnson vaccine to the construction workers at the new court house job site. Shasta county public health asked for assistance due to an outbreak and our team responded. Glen Hayward
