Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We have survived the winter and welcome the first day of spring today.

Year 11 and Year 12 students have continued their Final and Trial Examinations, respectively, while the Year 10 students have been away at Thredbo's annual ski camp. This year’s snow season has not been great, but Mrs. Symonds reports that there is enough to have had “heaps of fun.” It has meant that the Bondi Campus has been quiet, perfect for those writing exams.

I am delighted to share highlights from the Sports Department as the winter season ends.

Last Thursday, the Reddam House Athletics Team competed in the CDSSA Athletics Championships. Congratulations to the below students selected for the CDSSA Team to compete at the AICES Championships next week.

Oscar Bakes, Hugo Bendeich, Cairo Blackmore, Ava Bova, Charlotte Compton, Georgina Corish, Jayden Finucane, Sophie Garvin, Laurence Giddins, Abbey Haggiag, Melia Haigh, Henry Joy, Oliver Kalan, Ethan Karpes, Thea Krishnan, Aston Lake, Mateo Lopez Fisher, Maddie Macintyre, Oscar Marks, Lee Maserow, Bronte Millar, Ashira Naidu, Poppy O'Reilly, Tomi Reynaldo, Petra Saboisky, Aston Sacks, Ethan Sacks, Edward Sazhin, Coby Shandler, Nicola Shapiro, Micah Shields, Joshua Tancred, Alexander Thatcher, Stephanie Vass, Sylvia Waugh, Lucinda Wirth, Caitlyn Wood, Charlotte Flekser.

Special mention must go to Oscar Bakes and Oliver Kalan for being crowned Age Champions for their respective age groups.

Jayden Finucane (Under 15 Boys 1500m) and Matteo Lopez Fisher (Under 13 Boys High Jump) set new records for this meeting.

Last weekend, five of our senior basketball teams demonstrated exceptional skill and determination as they competed in the finals of their respective grades.

Our Reddam Diamonds, competing in the Under 18s Division 1, clinched the championship title. It was a hard-fought victory, and their tenacity and teamwork paid off.

The Reddam Suns, our Under 18s Division 2 team, showcased their talent and fighting spirit as they battled to the runners-up position. Their commendable performance exemplifies the dedication and hard work they have put into their practices and games.

Similarly, our Under 16s Division 2 team, the Reddam Sparks, proved their mettle by securing the runners-up position. Their high skill level and determination were evident throughout the season, and this achievement is well-deserved.

In the Under 16s Division 3, the Reddam Nets won, claiming the championship title. Their commitment, teamwork, and unwavering spirit have paid off as they bring home the championship for Reddam House.

Last, our Under 14s Division 2 team, the Reddam Flames, blazed their way to the championship. Their talent, hard work, and dedication were evident in every game, and their success is a testament to their unwavering commitment to the sport.

I would like to extend my gratitude and congratulations to all the players, coaches, and parents for their continuous support and encouragement. Your commitment and dedication to the Reddam basketball program is truly commendable. We look forward to the new season, which starts this weekend.

News from the Music Department

Young musicians need to be exposed to high-quality music performances as part of their learning, and we're so fortunate to live in a city that attracts world-class talent. Wednesday’s excursion to the Opera House to see Winton Marsalis and the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that these students will never forget. Featuring the best jazz players in New York, led by icon Winton Marsalis, the ensemble played arrangements of standards from Brubeck, Mingus, and Ellington, featuring improvised solos on sax, trombone, trumpet, and bass.

As keen advocates for music education, the band members also responded to questions from the students. They talked about their experiences playing with jazz greats such as Quincy Jones and Etta James. There are many great jazz bands out there, but the quality and sound of the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra is unsurpassed, and we're so pleased to have been able to share this experience with a selection of Year 9-11 students.

Last weekend, 78 of our musical stars from the Senior Choir took the spotlight as they embarked on an exciting journey to Queensland they aimed to participate and shine in the annual Gold Coast Choral Eisteddfod.

Due to the limited numbers allowed in each choir, the group was divided into The Reddam House Senior Choir and the Reddam House Chamber Choir. Both choirs sang their hearts out, with the Senior Choir securing a respectable fourth place, accompanied by a gleaming gold ribbon. The Chamber Choir, on the other hand, was the talk of the town as they clinched first place with a platinum ribbon. Considering the tight competition from 9 incredibly skilled choirs, this was no small feat. Their soulful performance of 'Raintree,' and the evocative rendition of 'Shadowland,' captivated the audience.

Post-competition, the students were treated to a celebratory evening of dinner and a show, hopping on a coach to Brisbane to see the musical Mamma Mia! at QPAC. As well as leisurely beach walks, delicious meals, and refreshing pool time, our students dove into exhilarating experiences like Infinity and Hijinx Hotel challenge rooms, a day at the Movieworld theme park, and the epic "How well do you know Reddam? Choir Edition" trivia night. Students also rehearsed regularly in the hotel's conference room to ensure their repertoire was in top condition. The group was led by Mrs. Bortolotti and supported by Mr. Bortolotti, Ms. Ahn, Mrs. Karney, Mr. Milo, and Ms. Wolfson.

We are incredibly proud of every student who participated. Congratulations to these fantastic Reddam students. We are so proud of the effort and dedication of all our choristers.

Other impressive student achievements include:

Mia Cohen spent some time away in London in August, taking part in the Royal Ballet School for an Intensive Summer Course. Each year, the Royal Ballet School selects one student from the group to be invited back for the next year as a Direct Entry. Mia was informed this week that she was the student chosen, so she’ll be off to Royal Ballet School again in 2024. Wow, well done, Mia.

Oscar Marks won the Young Adult Poetry category award for the Laura Literary Awards for his poem, Knock Knock, which he wrote for his IIC last year. Congratulations, Oscar.

Studio Recitals Week 6

An intense week of Studio Recitals brought each day alive with outstanding performances. The varied musical styles, coupled with a diversity of instruments, was a delight. A hearty congratulations to all participants for their dedication and practice. These recitals served not just as a platform for showcasing students' hard work to families and friends but also underscored the importance of live performance opportunities.

On Sunday, we were treated to the sounds of Ms Bennetts' violin and viola students. Ms Tromp showcased her piano students, and a splendid collaboration between Ms Ahn & Ms Ma gave us a glimpse into the world of clarinet and piano students. The day was rounded off by the beautiful voices of Ms Bouchier's vocal students.

Monday saw Mr O'Mahony & Ms Race taking the stage with their young pianists. Later, Ms Ma & Mr Kempton introduced us to their trumpet, guitar, and clarinet students. Tuesday was all about strings with Ms Buenaventura & Ms An presenting their violin and viola students. The rhythmic beats from Mr Wallis's percussion students were an exciting addition to the evening.

On Wednesday, the talented students of Ms Xu & Mr Clews exhibited their guitar and piano playing. Mr Sitsky followed with his flute studio. Concluding our week on Thursday, Mr Goldstein & Mr Campbell enjoyed a successful and full recital with their guitar and bass guitar students. The week drew to a close with Ms Cheng and her violin and piano students.

Adelaide Hall was abuzz each day, packed with supportive family and friends, lending a special atmosphere to each recital. A big thank you to everyone who attended and to all our gifted performers for making it a memorable week.

2024 Musical Announcement

For those that missed last weeks announcement, next year's High School musical will be the classic crowd-pleaser The Music Man, which has recently concluded a record-breaking Broadway run starring Hugh Jackman. This golden comedy has a huge amount of roles and one of the all-time great scores. Watch a preview at this Link HERE.

The Week That Was

Middle School Art Showcase

Our Middle School Art Showcase was held last week on Thursday. It was a fabulous night featuring outstanding artworks from Years 7, 8 and 9. There were paintings, drawings and ceramics displayed for all to enjoy. It was so good to see our students sharing their artworks with their parents and showing them just how fantastic the standard of work is here at Reddam. A lovely night was had by all! See you again next year.

Year 7 Seminar Day

Last week for Seminar Day we took Year 7 to the Art Gallery of New South Wales to see the Archibald Prize. This term our Year 7 students have been learning about the genre of portraiture so this was a perfect opportunity to see a range of different painting styles and subjects. They also saw the new building extension of the Art Gallery and walked through the fantastic Indigenous Art Collection.

A fun day was had by all and special thanks to all of the teachers who helped.

High School students will need their most recent school report or HSC trial results, to answer self-reflective questions about their motivation to study and let us know what areas of study they’re considering. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, students must have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. They only need to complete the form once (unless their circumstances change) and upon successful completion will be considered for equity and/or meritbased scholarships depending on their circumstances.

Note, scholarships that have previously been awarded automatically (e.g. MySydney) will continue to be awarded automatically depending on a student’s eligibility. However, we still recommend students apply for scholarships using this form so they can be considered for as many as, and to the highest value, possible.

* Some University of Sydney scholarships will still require individual application per scholarship. See sydney.edu.au/scholarships for a list of all scholarships, including terms and conditions.

Admission pathways and entry schemes

Our entry schemes help students make the most of their qualifications by recognising their circumstances, special achievements and other abilities and activities. Most of our entry schemes are currently open, with fast approaching application deadlines. To learn more and apply, students can visit the admission pathways webpage or email Sydney Future Students at admission.pathways@sydney.edu.au with questions.

New admission scheme: Regional and Remote Entry Scheme

The Regional and Remote Scheme – for domestic students residing in or attending a school in a regional or remote area – offers admission to a Sydney Uni undergraduate degree on a reduced ATAR.

Students are also encouraged to submit an application to be considered for scholarships through the University's new single scholarship application form. Applications close 29 September and students must also have the University of Sydney listed as a preference on this date Please note: most accommodation scholarships still require a separate application through the relevant college website.

MySydney Entry and Scholarship Scheme

MySydney offers eligible students residing in a low socio-economic areas entry on a reduced ATAR, an $8,500 per annum scholarship for the duration of their undergraduate degree and additional support. Students simply submit a UAC application and list the University of Sydney as a preference. If the student is eligible, we will notify them via email on the dates listed on the MySydney website.

Domestic undergraduate scholarships single application form

We're dedicated to supporting your students throughout their time at university. We offer a wide variety of scholarships for domestic undergraduate students. To make the process easier, we've created a centralised form where students can be considered from a pool of $1.5 million worth of scholarships through one simple application. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, current Year 12 students must complete the form and have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September.

ATSE 2024 Elevate program for women and non-binary students in STEM

Domestic students interested in studying engineering or science degrees at the University of Sydney in 2024 can now apply for the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering’s (ATSE) Elevate: Boosting Women in STEM program. Applications close

5 pm (AEST) on Thursday 31 August 2023. Find out more and submit an application.

UAC Applications

Applications are still steadily rolling in. Please remind students that to be considered for many highdemand courses, and to avoid a higher fee, they should lodge a UAC application before 29 September. If they wish to be considered for an SRS offer, both applications must be lodged by 18 September.

Many people ask about the benefits of applying through UAC compared to applying directly to an institution for an early offer, so here are a few key points:

• Not all courses are available for early offers.

• An early offer is not guaranteed.

• A UAC application provides more options for preferences.

• Students who have experienced difficulties/disadvantages in Year 11 or 12 can have their circumstances taken into account through an EAS application.

Students should make the most of their options and list different course preferences in their UAC application and their direct application. However, if they miss out on an early offer from a direct application they can add that course preference to their UAC application and compete for an offer based on their ATAR. The majority of students will be made an offer based on their ATAR and the hard work they have put into their Year 12 studies.

Preferences

While attending uni open days this year, the UAC Community Engagement team has answered many questions from students about how to list their preferences. In some cases a university has told them they need to list a course as their number one preference in order to receive an offer, but the course is not their first choice.

Students should always:

• place their dream course as their first preference

• include a back-up course as a lower preference.

And they should find out:

• the previous lowest selection ranks for the course – is it a realistic choice?

• if they are eligible for any adjustment factors.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND

UNE Courses for 2024 now open in UAC

We’ve recently opened applications for 2024 study through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). New students can apply for over 50 on campus UNE bachelor degrees through UAC. Current year 12 students can also now add preference to their UAC application to be considered for the UAC Schools

Recommendation Scheme

Application via UAC

Other ways students can apply

School leavers possess a distinct advantage as they have several avenues through which they can apply to UNE. This not only increases their chances of being considered for a wide array of courses but also empowers them with multiple options, enabling them to select the most suitable course that aligns with their interests and aspirations.

In addition to UAC and SRS applications being open, current year 12 students can also apply for UNE Early Entry now or direct to UNE when application open.

UNE Early Entry – guarantees your students a place at university whether or not they're expecting to receive an ATAR score. Our 2024 Early Entry applications have been open since February and close on 15 September 2023.

By applying directly to UNE, students can get their offer before the release of Year 12 results, giving them certainty that no matter what happens, they will have a place at UNE.

If your students have applied for SRS via UAC they can also apply for another or different courses via UNE Early Entry.

Application via Early Entry

Direct application to UNE – current year 12 students wishing to study online in our bachelor degrees or in any of our diplomas, advanced diplomas or undergraduate certificates can also apply direct to UNE. There is no cost to apply online direct UNE. Students will need to apply in this way for courses where: they are relying on their academic merit (e.g their ATAR or other prior completion qualification/s) to gain entry into; or for UNE courses not available through Early Entry or SRS etc. Direct applications to study in 2024 are expected to open in August 2023

Introducing UNSW Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offers

We are excited to announce that for Term 1, 2024 onwards, domestic students who are successful in applying for the UNSW Portfolio Entry Scheme will be eligible for an Early Conditional Offer.

If a student meets or exceeds the adjusted ATAR requirement for an eligible degree and lists this as their highest eligible preference in UAC for the specified UAC offer round, then they will be issued a firm offer to that degree.

For Term 1, 2024 entry, firm offers for Portfolio Entry will be issued in UAC December Round 2 (NSW and ACT applicants) and January Round 1 (Interstate and IB applicants).

When is the Deadline?

Submissions for Term 1, 2024 are already open, with early conditional offers released Friday, 1 September 2023
