Reddam House High School Newsletter 4 August 2023 Volume 23, Issue 21 | 4 August 2023

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Reddam was in the news last week with two of our senior drama students, Zoe Topper and Karl Page, interviewed for Channel 9’s Today Show alongside past student and now actor Carlos Sanson of the HSC Class of 2016 Channel 9: Interview HSC Drama

This term is dominated by the HSC Performing Arts completing their Trial Examinations, followed in short succession by their Finals in the practical component of Dance, Drama, Music, and Art. This week the Year 12 Drama students performed their Monologues and their Group Devised Piece (GDP), an original play written, choreographed, set, and then performed themselves to an audience. The four GDPs were so different from each other but equally well crafted and performed, as were the sixteen monologues. The invaluable feedback from the independent examiner allows students to adapt and improve their work in preparation for their Final performances on the 21st and 22nd of August. Congratulations to Mr. Hodgson, Mr. Montgomery, and the students on two entertaining nights of performance enjoyed by very appreciative audiences.

Next week the Music 1, Music 2, and Music Extension students will perform their instrumental pieces for their Practical Trial Assessment.

The Sydney Eisteddfod continued this week with Impromptu Speaking - 14 years and under. “The impromptu sections are the most difficult and scary event in the Eisteddfod by a country mile,” according to Mrs. Karney. The topic given this year was "Sweet and Sour," and students had two minutes to prepare a three-minute speech. Our students were incredible, speaking clearly, coherently, and expressively. The Reddam students who entered were Alex Nelenson, Portia Schebesta, Sylvie Pasvolsky, Maddie Wenmohs, Abby Sheary, Dani Freilikh, Alice Butler, Mateo Lopez Fisher, and Sarah Mueller.

Portia Schebesta was awarded a Highly Commended Certificate, and Reddam cleaned up in the places.

Abby Sheary won the event, Sarah Mueller came second, and Sylvie Pasvolsky came third.

The U14 Prepared Speech was a fantastic event - there were 28 competitors, and the standard was incredibly high.

Congratulations to Sarah Mueller and Jethro Jensen, who were awarded Highly Commended Certificates.

Ricky Resnick came second, and Sylvie Pasvolsky won the section.

The topic in the U19 Impromptu section was "On the Rise."

Congratulations to Lila MacPherson, Jade Hastings, Luca del Monaco, Georgie Davis, Nathan Myers, Jessica Levy, Marlena Pasvolsky, and Maya Hatzvi. It was a very hotly contested section, with some incredible speakers.

Maya Hatzvi was awarded Highly Commended, Jessica Levy came second, and Marlena Pasvolsky took first place.

Congratulations to all our students who entered: we are so proud of them - they are amazing and such a good advertisement for our school.

1 - Abby Sheary - winner of U14 Impromptu Speaking 2 - U14 Prepared Speech place getters: Jethro Jensen (HC) Ricky Resnick (2nd) Sarah Mueller (HC) and Sylvie Pasvolsky (winner)

In the Vocal competition, Alexis Vella participated on Saturday in the Contemporary Section (12 Yrs) and was placed 2nd, receiving a score of 90. Well done, Alexis.

3 - U18 Impromptu Speaking place getters: Maya Hatzvi (HC) Jessica Levy (2nd) Marlena Pasvolsky (winner)

CIS Water Polo

Last week Dasher Stewart and Xavier Nicholas headed to Woy Woy to compete for 3 days in the Australian Schools Invitational Water Polo Championships 2023. Their NSW CIS U17 Boys team made the grand final and came home with a silver medal, going down by only 1 point to Queensland's U19 representative boys team. Congratulations boys.

4 - Alexis Vella (Y7)

Year 10 students continue with their Career workshops today with Mrs Jones. The first of the series of workshops last week was taken appropriately seriously by the Year 10s, and Mrs. Jones was prompted to share the following email with them, “I would like to thank you for your fantastic cooperation and diligence in starting your career exploration journey today. Our sessions went very smoothly, and you seemed engrossed in learning about various occupations, University requirements, and subjects for the HSC.

I look forward to working with you again next Friday.” These are such essential workshops with farreaching outcomes and consequences for each student that I am so pleased that they are approaching them with the correct attitude.

Year 11 students had a workshop today from Elevate Education entitled “Ace Your Exams,” where strategies are shared with them based on current research to give them that final input as they prepare for their Final Year 11 Examinations starting in week 5. Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead,

HSC Drama

This week our HSC Drama students presented their Individual Project Performances and Group Performances in front of a live audience as part of their Trial Examinations. This was their last opportunity to receive critical feedback before the HSC Practical Examination. The students all rose to the challenge delivering some entertaining and captivating performances. They are encouraged to continue to strive for success through a rigorous process of rehearsal to ensure they achieve their full potential in their final HSC Examination. We wish you all the best Year 12.

HSC Dance Evening

The cohort of 2023 HSC dancers are an outstanding group of young artists who have developed a beautiful body of original work this year. This work will be presented to a panel of HSC markers next week for their final HSC examination.

We wish Persia Behnia, Taryn Herman, Zachary Simmons, Ella Slot, Max Styles and Zoe Tolnay the very best of luck as they embark on this final stage of their Dance journey.

Composition Competition

We are delighted to announce that Reddam House is now accepting entries for the 2023 Composition Competition. Scholarship Spotlight

Browse our scholarships

New single application for scholarships

Students can now complete one form to be considered for most scholarships at the University of Sydney*. High School students will need their most recent school report or HSC trial results, to answer self-reflective questions about their motivation to study and let us know what areas of study they’re considering. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, students must have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. They only need to complete the form once (unless their circumstances change) and upon successful completion will be considered for equity and/or meritbased scholarships depending on their circumstances.

Note, scholarships that have previously been awarded automatically (e.g. MySydney) will continue to be awarded automatically depending on a student’s eligibility. However, we still recommend students apply for scholarships using this form so they can be considered for as many as, and to the highest value, possible.

Apply now

* Some University of Sydney scholarships will still require individual application per scholarship. See sydney.edu.au/scholarships for a list of all scholarships, including terms and conditions.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND

UNE Courses for 2024 now open in UAC

We’ve recently opened applications for 2024 study through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). New students can apply for over 50 on campus UNE bachelor degrees through UAC. Current year 12 students can also now add preference to their UAC application to be considered for the UAC Schools Recommendation Scheme

Application via UAC

Other ways students can apply

School leavers possess a distinct advantage as they have several avenues through which they can apply to UNE. This not only increases their chances of being considered for a wide array of courses but also empowers them with multiple options, enabling them to select the most suitable course that aligns with their interests and aspirations.

In addition to UAC and SRS applications being open, current year 12 students can also apply for UNE Early Entry now or direct to UNE when application open.

UNE Early Entry – guarantees your students a place at university whether or not they're expecting to receive an ATAR score. Our 2024 Early Entry applications have been open since February and close on 15 September 2023.

By applying directly to UNE, students can get their offer before the release of Year 12 results, giving them certainty that no matter what happens, they will have a place at UNE.

If your students have applied for SRS via UAC they can also apply for another or different courses via UNE Early Entry.

Application via Early Entry

Direct application to UNE – current year 12 students wishing to study online in our bachelor degrees or in any of our diplomas, advanced diplomas or undergraduate certificates can also apply direct to UNE. There is no cost to apply online direct UNE. Students will need to apply in this way for courses where: they are relying on their academic merit (e.g their ATAR or other prior completion qualification/s) to gain entry into; or for UNE courses not available through Early Entry or SRS etc. Direct applications to study in 2024 are expected to open in August 2023

Early Conditional Offer Scheme close. The teams are already underway with the assessments, ready for the offer release on Friday, 1 September 2023. However, both schemes are reopening for Round 2 on Saturday, 2 September 2023, in case any of your students missed out. For students who are elite athletes, our Elite Athletes Program and Scholarships are also now open for 2024 entry.

Excitingly, we have two brand new degrees launching for 2024 as well as two new majors within the Bachelor of Commerce. We have also redesigned our Bachelor of Science and Advanced Science programs, with an even greater focus on employability and student experience!

Introducing UNSW Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offers

We are excited to announce that for Term 1, 2024 onwards, domestic students who are successful in applying for the UNSW Portfolio Entry Scheme will be eligible for an Early Conditional Offer

Portfolio Entry provides students applying for most Arts, Design & Architecture and Engineering degrees with the opportunity to showcase their passion and talent through a portfolio of work, alongside their ATAR.

What is a Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer?

Successful applicants will receive an early conditional offer which has an adjusted ATAR requirement up to 10 ATAR points below the lowest selection rank for a specific degree or range of related degrees.

If a student meets or exceeds the adjusted ATAR requirement for an eligible degree and lists this as their highest eligible preference in UAC for the specified UAC offer round, then they will be issued a firm offer to that degree.

For Term 1, 2024 entry, firm offers for Portfolio Entry will be issued in UAC December Round 2 (NSW and ACT applicants) and January Round 1 (Interstate and IB applicants).

When is the Deadline?

Submissions for Term 1, 2024 are already open, with early conditional offers released Friday, 1 September 2023

A late round of Portfolio Entry applications will open Saturday, 2 September 2023 and close on Wednesday, 22 November 2023. Late round early conditional offers will be released on Friday, 8 December 2023 Find out more
