Reddam House High School Newsletter 28 July 2023 Volume 23, Issue 20 | 28 July 2023
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to the second semester. I hope all Reddam families had time to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy a wonderful break. I enjoyed watching the Ashes, Wimbledon, the Tour de France, and other iconic sporting events broadcast at unforgiving hours, which one can indulge in if one does not have to work the next day. The 5th Ashes Test starting tonight is going to be a challenge.
Students should also see the start of this term as an essential time to reflect on the results and feedback they have received from their teachers following the Half Yearly and Pre Trial Examinations. Improvement relies on this self-reflection and developing different strategies if the student is unhappy with their current results. For those who are satisfied and happy with how they have done, it is lovely to get the affirmation that the strategies and processes followed in preparation are working well and returning positive results.
This term started at full throttle and will continue in that vane for the rest of the term. Activities enjoyed at school this week included:
The Dance evening was held in Adelaide Hall on the first evening of the term. Our six Year 12 Dance students enthralled the audience with their Major Study Performances and Core Performances. They were supported by younger dancers performing each student’s original composition. The three
elements combine to produce each student’s Practical Body of Work. Mrs. Collier-Walsh was effervescent in her praise for her students and the quality of the performances we witnessed on the evening. This bodes well for when they present these works to the HSC Examiners on the 10th and 11th of August. I thank Mrs. Collier-Walsh and Ms. Knight for creating such a caring, collaborative culture within the Dance Department at Reddam, allowing our students to thrive and blossom as artists and performers.
On Monday and Tuesday evenings, the Sydney Eisteddfod students entering the U12, U13, and U15 Prepared Speeches presented their speeches to the judges and the results are very impressive, reflecting the importance that Reddam as a school and Mrs. Karney as the teacher place on public speaking.
U 15 Prepared Speech:
1st place - Lyra Mesimeris
2nd place - Alaina Ray
Only 3 Highly Commended certificates were awarded in the section - Archie Diamond and Tyler Katz were worthy recipients.
U 12 Prepared Speech:
2nd place: Charlotte Compton
3rd place: Audrey Cheng
Only 2 Highly Commended certificates were awarded in the section - both to Reddam students David Watts and Ashley Vynokur.
13 years Prepared Speech: In this section, we almost achieved a clean sweep!
1st place- Ally Schwarz
2nd place - Noa Stein
3rd place - Aarav Daddikar
Out of the 4 Highly Commended certificates, Reddam won three. Mia Chesler, Charlize Allen, and Ella Clark-Smith
In other Public Speaking news, Sarah Mueller advanced to the Regional Finals in the Legacy Public Speaking Competition. Congratulations Sarah.
1 - Audrey Cheng (3rd) Ashley Vynokur (HC) and Charlotte Compton (2nd)
The Ryde Choral Festival took place on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Bortolotti were very excited to announce that our Choir achieved Highly Commended in the first section & 1st place in the choral championship, thereby retaining the shield. Their cohesive performance for a large choir was spectacular and a feature that is a testament to the work that has gone into their preparation. This has set them up for their upcoming Gold Coast Tour, where they will perform at that Eisteddfod. Congratulations to all on this fantastic result.
2 - Sara Mueller and Maya Hatzvi
3 - Aarav Daddikar, Ally Schwarz and Noa Stein
In Music, this term:
As part of Year 7's studies of Orchestral Instruments, students attended an interactive orchestral adventure concert on Thursday that engaged students with a live symphonic orchestra, reinforcing their learning in a fun and informative way. Speaking to some Year 7 students following this outing, they appear to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Year 9 Elective Music classes have been learning about Film Music last term. Their class assessment for the term was to compose an underscore to accompany the Ice Age Scrat shorts, some of which were incredible. To celebrate their hard work, Ms. Eckardt made some popcorn, put up some fairy lights, and spent a lesson watching their film compositions together.
Other student achievements include:
Jacob Hazan (Y9) - During the holidays, Jacob's Cronulla 14U Representative Baseball Team won the honour of representing Australia and Baseball New South Wales at an international tournament in Cooperstown, NY - the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
His team was crowned joint Champions after having a very successful tournament. How good is it to go to the home of Baseball and beat all comers at their own game! Well done.
Also, during the holidays, students attended Space School at NASA. (More on this to follow)
The sixty-five students who went on the Ski Trip to Perisher with Mr. Kable had perfect conditions for skiing. Mr. Kable reported that everyone had a thoroughly wonderful time in the snow and left a great impression on all they came into contact with on the slopes.
It's that time of the year again when our organizing team for the TEDxYouth@Reddamhouse gets busy organizing this annual event. Our curators, Emily Miller, and Jess Levy, have selected the theme to be “a lightbulb moment,” they are looking for guest speakers who might enjoy the opportunity to share their moment of inspiration. Please contact them directly at tedxyouth@reddamhouse.com.au
This year the event will be hosted at Woollahra Library on 8th October.
Today in the Cycle Test period, several presenters engaged our students in several Pastoral sessions:
Year 9
The Heroic Imagination Project - Combatting the Bystander Effect -Prompting Heroes of the Future, will be presented by Lorraine Cushing-Klebe. The session from Stanford University's HIP program explores how individuals can be passive and active bystanders. Students are encouraged to reflect on where they are bystanders and how they can develop the confidence to act heroically and ethically.
Year 8
Let’s Talk about body image in a digital world will be presented by the Butterfly Foundation in small workshop groups. The workshop explores social media's role in body confidence and self-esteem. It aims to strengthen young people’s media literacy skills and empower them through how they use and view social media platforms to have a safer, more positive online experience.
Year7
Elevate Education will present Study Skills Kick Start in small workshop groups. The workshop will cover transitioning to high school, dynamic reading skills, effective note-taking skills, conceptual learning techniques, and independent learning.
Year 10
The first of their Career seminars is where the results of the Allwell tests are discussed, career options investigated, tertiary study options, and subsequently moving towards selecting the appropriate subjects for their HSC. This process all happens this term. It is a process of joining the dots of where students are now, where they hope to be in 5 - 10 years, and how to navigate the path between now and then.
A wonderfully busy start to the term, Have a great weekend and week ahead,
Dave Pitcairn
Middle School Drama
Our Middle School Drama production rehearsals of 'Scaredy-Cat' are back underway in the lead up to production taking place at the Bondi Pavilion early Term 4. Our student from Years 8-9 were eager to get back into the Drama Studio to work on developing their characters and create the mysterious landscape of the Australian Bush as they search for the illusive black panther. Information regarding tickets will be announced toward the end of Term 3.
Ryde Choral Eisteddfod
On Wednesday, Reddam House's Senior Choir performed at the annual Ryde Choral Eisteddfod. The choir, comprising three separately rehearsed vocal groups - Year 7 Vocal Ensemble, Woollahra Singers, and Bondi Singers - brought together students from Years 7-11. They successfully combined to compete as two distinctive groups: the Reddam House Chamber Choir and the Reddam House Senior Choir. This year posed a unique challenge to our students, as they were tasked with performing two brand new pieces on the second day of the term after the school break, with little rehearsal time. Nevertheless, they rose to the occasion, showcasing their adaptability, dedication and talent.
The Chamber Choir received a 'Highly Commended' in their section, with the adjudicator commenting on the group's full, joyful, rich, warm sound, and confident solos. The evening's highlight came from the Senior Choir, which surprised everyone by outperforming an outstanding adult choir, Aurora Australis, and taking home first place in the championship. The adjudicator commented on the group's great balance and dynamic control, and commended the students for their fabulous musicality. This marks the second consecutive year that our choir has managed this result. We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment, and it stands as a testament to the exceptional talent and hard work of our students.
Special acknowledgement goes to Marlena Pasvolsky and Luca Del Monaco for their outstanding introduction of the choirs, and our student musicians - Ria Kroon and Ruby Sher on the flute, and Joe Joe Malev on the djembe - for their dedication and exceptional performances. We would also like to celebrate our solo vocalists who sang beautifully, including Tilley Edwards-Hill, Paloma Nicholas, and Alex Marucci, to name a few.
A selection of these students will now refine their pieces for the upcoming Gold Coast Eisteddfod. To prepare for this competition, we are eagerly awaiting their performance of the new pieces at assembly in Week 4.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND
UNE Courses for 2024 now open in UAC
We’ve recently opened applications for 2024 study through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). New students can apply for over 50 on campus UNE bachelor degrees through UAC. Current year 12 students can also now add preference to their UAC application to be considered for the UAC Schools
Recommendation Scheme
Application via UAC
Other ways students can apply
School leavers possess a distinct advantage as they have several avenues through which they can apply to UNE. This not only increases their chances of being considered for a wide array of courses but also empowers them with multiple options, enabling them to select the most suitable course that aligns with their interests and aspirations.
In addition to UAC and SRS applications being open, current year 12 students can also apply for UNE Early Entry now or direct to UNE when application open.
UNE Early Entry – guarantees your students a place at university whether or not they're expecting to receive an ATAR score. Our 2024 Early Entry applications have been open since February and close on 15 September 2023.
By applying directly to UNE, students can get their offer before the release of Year 12 results, giving them certainty that no matter what happens, they will have a place at UNE.
If your students have applied for SRS via UAC they can also apply for another or different courses via UNE Early Entry.
Application via Early Entry
Direct application to UNE – current year 12 students wishing to study online in our bachelor degrees or in any of our diplomas, advanced diplomas or undergraduate certificates can also apply direct to UNE. There is no cost to apply online direct UNE. Students will need to apply in this way for courses where: they are relying on their academic merit (e.g their ATAR or other prior completion qualification/s) to gain entry into; or for UNE courses not available through Early Entry or SRS etc. Direct applications to study in 2024 are expected to open in August 2023

Introducing UNSW Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offers
We are excited to announce that for Term 1, 2024 onwards, domestic students who are successful in applying for the UNSW Portfolio Entry Scheme will be eligible for an Early Conditional Offer
Portfolio Entry provides students applying for most Arts, Design & Architecture and Engineering degrees with the opportunity to showcase their passion and talent through a portfolio of work, alongside their ATAR.
What is a Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer?
Successful applicants will receive an early conditional offer which has an adjusted ATAR requirement up to 10 ATAR points below the lowest selection rank for a specific degree or range of related degrees.
If a student meets or exceeds the adjusted ATAR requirement for an eligible degree and lists this as their highest eligible preference in UAC for the specified UAC offer round, then they will be issued a firm offer to that degree.
For Term 1, 2024 entry, firm offers for Portfolio Entry will be issued in UAC December Round 2 (NSW and ACT applicants) and January Round 1 (Interstate and IB applicants).
When is the Deadline?
Submissions for Term 1, 2024 are already open, with early conditional offers released Friday, 1 September 2023
A late round of Portfolio Entry applications will open Saturday, 2 September 2023 and close on Wednesday, 22 November 2023. Late round early conditional offers will be released on Friday, 8 December 2023 Find out more
