Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The Half-Yearly Examination Guide Booklets for Years 7 - 9 have been sent to parents and students. This serves as their most important resource when preparing for the upcoming examinations. Teacher expectations, the format, and the makeup of each assessment are explained for each subject. They are also stored on Parent Lounge for easy reference when required. Students should not start studying without referring to this document.

Congratulations to the Year 9 Debating Team who have made it through to the Semi Final of the Eastside debating competition. They will be debating against Sydney Grammar at Rosebay Secondary School this evening. Support from their peers would be most welcome.

On Wednesday the Music Department hosted the Elective Music Recital Mrs. Wood commented that “The night was a huge success with the most student performers we’ve ever put into a single concert (more than 120 elective music students now in the program).

It was full of class band items from years 9 and 10, and some selected soloists from 11 and 12. Parents commented on the night how positive the atmosphere was with so many of the students cheering and

supporting each other after each item. It was the best showcase of our academic music community to date.”

Year 10 music students have also launched their album of songs written by the students themselves in Term 1. These have been recorded and produced by Zaidan Music and everyone can listen to them here: Reddam Year 10 Music Composition

The adjudication of the Annual Reddam Instrumental Competition has been completed. With over 260 video entries the winners were announced at the assembly this week. We will be showcasing the best performances at the Live Finals on 31st May.

The Year 12 Drama students performed their monologues for Mr. Hodson and Mr. Montgomery on Monday night. This will form part of their Pre Trial Examination mark for Drama. They are fortunate to get these done so early in the term which allows them to get feedback in order to adapt to improve their performances. They have also started working on their Group Performances, where they write, produce, and perform a piece devised by them. Creative but stressful times in the Drama Department.

Year 11 and Year 12 Geographers did important fieldwork on Thursday in the mangrove in Cowra Point, Kernell. Two key components of their curriculum were covered. Biophysical environments and Ecosystems at risk due to human impact on the natural environment. They spent the day taking samples of water quality, turbidity, mud density, salinity, and temperature which are useful practical skills that will be used to validate their extended response questions in their examinations. They caught a blueringed octopus, pigmy squids, blue swimmer crabs, and shrimps to see the biodiversity of the local seagrass. Mr. Garratt and Ms. Dignan report that a fantastic day was had by all.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS THIS WEEK INCLUDE:

Callum Flint (Year 11) - Callum and his baseball team, NSW Hawks, made it through (undefeated) to the National Youth Baseball Championship game, held last weekend against Perth Phantoms in Perth. In an intense final they won 6-4 and now they get a green and gold uniform to represent Australia at the Senior League World Series Baseball Championships in the USA.

In the video of the final play of the game, Callum is the player on first base. That is huge Callum, well done.

SOCCER

Last Thursday Liam McMaster, Oliver Sacks and Riley Gamertsfelder represented CDSSA at the AICES Under 16 Soccer Championships at Valentine Park. All three of the boys played extremely well and CDSSA went on to win the Championship. Congratulations to both Oliver and Riley on their selection in the AICES Under 16 Team that will play at the NSWCIS Championships in a couple of weeks time.

Congratulations also to Meisha Holzman on her selection in the CDSSA Under 15 Girls Soccer Team. Meisha played extremely well at the AICES Championships with her and her team mates finishing up Runners Up in the Final.

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Middle School Production

Last week students from across Years 8-9 attended their first rehearsal for the upcoming Middle School Drama production of Scaredy-Cat by Brendan Hogan and directed by Chris Montgomery. This production will be presented at the Bondi Pavilion October 18-19th 2023 as double billing with the Year 10 Play ‘Year Nine Are Animals’ by Richard Tulloch and directed by Will Hodgson.

Our Middle School students were extremely excited as they commenced their first script reading of the production. We are proud of their ongoing commitment to developing their performance skills and their enthusiasm to create stories for the stage!

Tickets for these productions will be released in September 2023.

Years 11&12 Geography Field Trip

Year 11 and Year 12 Geographers did important fieldwork on Thursday in the mangrove in Cowra Point, Kernell. Two key components of their curriculum were covered. Biophysical environments and Ecosystems at risk due to human impact on the natural environment. They spent the day taking samples

of water quality, turbidity, mud density, salinity, and temperature which are useful practical skills that will be used to validate their extended response questions in their examinations. They caught a blueringed octopus, pigmy squids, blue swimmer crabs, and shrimps to see the biodiversity of the local seagrass. Mr. Garratt and Ms. Dignan report that a fantastic day was had by all.

Music News

Congratulations to the 260 students across the school who submitted video entries into our Piano, Strings, Wind & Brass, and Percussion sections of this year's Instrumental Competition. UAC

UAC Guide 2023/24

Applications

A reminder that if students from NSW or ACT didn't receive their UAC PIN via email on 5 April, please have them contact our customer service line on 02 9752 0200 for assistance.

Students who are completing IB or Year 12 in WA can now apply via UAC, as we have their details in our system for them to lodge their application.

I have had many questions about not finding courses on the UAC website. Please advise your students that if they can't find the course/s they are looking for, it just means that the uni hasn't provided UAC with all details as yet. All courses will be listed progressively and no later than 1 August.

Schools Recommendation Scheme

At the end of April, UAC received 2000 SRS applications which is up by 18% at the same time last year. And a reminder that schools won't be able to rate students until early to mid-August. We will be in touch soon to confirm the timing of this. We want to thank you for your patience while we are working on changes to improve SRS.

Early entry offer schemes

As you are all aware, there are many different early-entry applications, including SRS, so here are a few tips for students.

• If students want to keep all opportunities open to them, then they should apply for both early entry as well as through UAC for ATAR-based offers.

• Don't duplicate preferences across applications.

• Keep track of all applications lodged.

• Early entry isn't a guarantee of entry, as students must meet the minimum entry requirements. For more information about each early entry offer scheme, check the UAC website here.

Educational Access Scheme

The UAC website has a great deal of information on the disadvantages students can apply for under EAS. We would recommend students check each category of disadvantage for details on documents they may need to provide to get themselves prepared for what's ahead.

To date, we have received just under 3000 EAS applications, with many who have already uploaded the required documents for a full assessment of their application.

The Access booklets are available online for you to download and provide to students if need be.

LAT program for those interested in studying Law at UNSW next year:

We have an exciting opportunity for your students interested in studying law at UNSW! As you may already know, the Law Admission Test (LAT) is a crucial step towards gaining admission into law at UNSW. That's where LAT Plus comes in. Our Law Admission Test (LAT) Plus Accelerator Program is designed to help students develop essential skills required to succeed in the LAT. The LAT Plus Accelerator equips students with the tools, advice, and confidence to succeed in the LAT.

The LAT Plus Accelerator is an interactive program which helps students develop strategies for deconstructing questions, solidify critical thinking skills, and hone persuasive writing abilities. We also provide strategies to succeed in the LAT and empower students to achieve their full potential.

We offer students an immersive experience where they will have the opportunity to ask live questions, partake in interactive exercises, complete practice papers, and receive live feedback during the Program. In addition, we offer further practice papers and complementary written feedback to help students continue refining their skills following the completion of the program. If interested see Ms Jones for more details.
