Dear Parents and Caregivers, One of the most consistent sounds which seems to permeate our school is that of music. Whether in rehearsals for the school play, or in the multitude of musical instruments which our students are learning to play, or in choir practice, or in the exuberant melodies of ‘Happy Birthday’ being sung to a classmate – music seems to be part of the fabric of who we are at Reddam House. It would not be an exaggeration to suggest that many parents actually chose our school because of the vibrant cultural programme. Certainly, we have become well-known throughout the city and beyond for our excellence in art, dance, drama and music. Yet for all the accolades that our students may achieve at various eisteddfods and other competitions – and there have been many such successes in recent years – there is a far more fundamental reason why we believe the arts are so important. As with all activities at the school, the arts are a means to an end. They are part of the rich texture of our lives, and they allow us to connect with, and develop, our unique personalities, skills and abilities. They nurture creativity and they connect us emotionally and spiritually not only to ourselves but to others. Our cultural experiences throughout life have deep significance into shaping who we become. A recent article made the following fascinating comments, which underline just how powerful an impact music, for instance, can have on our lives. “A browse of the internet yielded plenty of food for thought: secondary students who participate in band or orchestra report the lowest use (current and lifetime) of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs; researchers exploring the link between music and intelligence report that music training is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children’s abstract reasoning skills; US Department of Education data reveals that students who report consistently high levels of involvement in instrumental music show significantly higher levels of mathematics proficiency by Year 12; the very best engineers and technical designers in Silicon Valley are, nearly without exception, practising musicians; and 36 per cent of Australian households contain at least one person who plays an instrument (of these, 63 per cent started between the ages of five and 11 years, and the majority report the influence of parents as the reason they started).” With so many incredible opportunities available for the students at Reddam House to explore their own musical talents, we look forward to even more of them embracing their innate abilities and relishing the chance to enjoy the harmonies and magical qualities of music.

The Mufti Day on Monday was naturally a huge success, with everyone enjoying their casual clothes – all for a good cause, of course. We were pleased to support the ‘Will2Live’ organisation, which does so much in the city to support those who are homeless and marginalised. We thank all our families for supporting our charitable outreach programme and the various organisations which we help throughout the year. The Year 4-6 New Student Exam Workshops went very well on Tuesday and Wednesday, and we trust that the skills which were learned will be put to good use in the upcoming exams, which are now only three weeks away. Then, as was evident by all the excitement prior to and after their return, the Year 1s had a fascinating time on their excursion to the Australian Museum yesterday. They will surely remember what they learned in those few hours for years to come.
Speaking of excursions, next week sees two more exciting trips for the students to anticipate. On Monday, the Year 4s make the short trip to the Centennial Parklands – always a wonderful opportunity to get outdoors and to engage with our natural heritage. Then, the following day it is the turn of the Kindergarten students to do something similar, as they enjoy the morning at Clifton Gardens. Next week is not only about excursions, however, as we also have what should be a wonderful incursion – Oz Opera’s production of Cinderella, which will be visiting us on Wednesday. The students have already been learning more about opera from our enthusiastic Music staff, so they should be well prepared to enjoy this very special incursion. Thursday brings some more cultural excitement, with our choirs taking part in the Sydney Eisteddfod on Thursday. Recent years have seen our choirs doing exceptionally well in the eisteddfod, so we hope that they continue in this vein, but mainly that they really enjoy the experience. On the same day, a number of our athletes will be competing in the ASISSA Cross Country Championships. We wish them well for this competition. We were notified today that Ruby's Young Archie entry, attached, was a shortlisted artwork. It was selected as one of the top 7% of entries out of over 2300 artworks submitted! What a fantastic achievement Ruby! Rubi’s artistic statement - ‘Dad’s Heartbroken Smile’
This is my Dad and our dog, Torres, who we had to say goodbye to last year. The painting is from a photo of two of them together during the last few hours before Torres left us. My Dad is smiling and seems happy but he was putting on such a brave face for Torres, and for all of us. He was heartbroken and I know that he is still so sad. I love my Dad for his strength and sensitivity and for teaching me how to focus on our happy times.

Congratulations to Ella Jellic who was placed runner up in the 2022 Springwood 10 and Under Mixed Tennis competition this last weekend and runner’s up in the girls 10&under doubles 2022 NSW Age Junior Premier Series over the holidays.

Thomas Scicluna competed a 5km fun run for charity out at the Newington Armory in Sydney Olympic Park. Thomas ran a fabulously fast race, completing the 5km in 45 minutes, beating his personal best. Well done Thomas!

We were very proud to receive over 250 entries into this year's Instrumental Competition from across our school. Students competed in Piano, Strings, Wind & Brass, and Percussion sections, and our external adjudicators had the difficult task of selecting winners. Please see below for these eagerly anticipated results. All students will receive written feedback from the adjudicators to assist in their musical development. This year, our adjudicators were Yuhki Mayne (Strings), Jeremy Ezkenazi (Piano) and Lisa McCowage (Percussion and Wind & Brass). Congratulations to all the students who participated, and we look forward to being able to share many of these special performances with the school community. My sincere thanks to both Marcus and Elli Bortilotti for arranging this wonderful competition for our students! CROSS COUNTRY On Friday last week, over 400 of our primary students traveled to Centennial Park to compete in our Cross Country Carnival. It has been three years since our students have been able to participate in this event, and it was great to see so many of our kids (and parents) enjoying themselves at one of our favourite events of the sporting calendar. It was fantastic to see all of our students and teachers dressed in their house colours, with some outstanding house chants to cheer our runners home. Congratulations to all students who participated in the event and gave their best effort. Thank you to our PE department, coaches and all of the primary teachers, who organised and managed a wonderful day. It was great to bring the whole school together again. Our winners on the day were Bronte House. Well done on a great team effort!

KINDERGARTEN Lots of fun and excitement was had in Kindergarten this week as the students watched their teachers' hair turn pink! The students loved joining in and wearing pink clothes on Wednesday, as we came together as a community to support a great cause and to raise money. In the classroom, students worked hard to explore and identify various three-dimensional objects. They confidently described the properties and features of different objects, making connections to everyday items. The students proudly had a go at making their own 3D objects, using a variety of materials including play doh, connecting blocks and magnets. In English, we continued to explore the text, ‘I Want My Hat Back’, by Jon Klassen. We deepened our comprehension skills as we sequenced parts of the story and took a closer look at the funny characters. We then learnt about adjectives and how they can add more detail to our sentences. The teachers were very impressed with the describing words the students came up with that they are now starting to use in their writing tasks. Our Topic lessons this week explored the importance of places we belong to. We started to learn about the city of Sydney and which suburbs our houses are located in. We discussed why we need to take care of these places and why we need to respect the land and nature around us.

YEAR 1 This week in mathematics, we have explored Australian Currency. We commenced with coin rubbing so that the children could closely observe the size, shape and images found on each coin. They made connections to currencies they had experienced around the world. We played interactive games such as; filling our piggy banks and shopping at the market, to consolidate our learning of adding up totals and finding specific amounts. In English, we have continued our focus on procedural writing. The children wrote the steps to making a jam sandwich. Of course we had to make it in real life - what budding chefs, with jammy faces, we have! Within science, we learnt about the seasons. We looked at the position of our Earth against the sun, at different times of the year. This helped us to understand why the seasons vary across the globe. Our playground is currently full of Autumn leaves which results in lots of related ‘seasons spotters’ at playtime! Of course, the highlight of our week was the excursion to the Australian Maritime Museum. The children absolutely adored discovering what life was like on a tall ship. They absorbed so many facts and lots of 'aaargh's’ were heard, during pirate school! It was a sensational day out and we have so much gratitude for our parent helpers. Luckily, no one had to walk the plank!

YEAR 2 This week the students in Year 2 have enjoyed learning and consolidating topics and themes covered in Science and Geography. In Science, we have focused on the properties, forms, and uses of water. The students learned all about water as a solid, liquid and gas and listed examples of each. We discussed ways in which we can use water in our daily lives, transportation involving water and recreational activities that are centered around water. Learning about the water cycle was lots of fun and it is amazing that it is never-ending! In Geography, the students identified the five oceans and seven continents of our world. Did you know that two-thirds of the world’s surface is covered by water? Year 2 know! We learned that animals, including humans, need fresh water to survive and that water can be found in streams, lakes, oceans, rivers, and under the ground.
Mathematics focus this week included making friendly tens to subtract in mentals; subtraction strategies including counting back to find our answers; identifying and making halves and quarters in fractions; identifying right angles and comparing volume using concrete materials. Our English week involved spelling ‘st’ and ‘ty’ words. The students learned all about simple sentences and clauses, breaking them down into the subject and the clause. We practiced writing our best sentences in spelling and grammar. Our novel focus is ‘The Little Refugee’ by Ahn Do, which retells his journey as a refugee from Vietnam. ‘Quick Writes’ is a time where the children can write freely and use their knowledge to help write creatively. Speaking and listening is a time when the students present their news items and this week, we have learned about amazing landmarks around the world.

YEAR 3 In Year 3 we have been learning about how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people lived before the arrival of Europeans. We have been focussing on their traditional cultural expressions. Body art is a vital part of these traditions. Ornamentation reflects a person’s family, ancestry, social grouping and territory and is a deeply spiritual practice, especially around marriage ceremonies. The art style varies greatly between the different nations living on the Australian continent. In class we each designed our own body art that would best illustrate ourselves, our families and what is important to us as fellow Australians. Have a look at what some of us came up with.

YEAR 4 This week, our Year 4 students have been exploring their charitable sides, embodying a powerful chorus line from the Reddam House song, “We shall give back!”. We would like to commend them on the inundation of gold coin donations we received, to raise funds for the Will2Live and Breast Cancer Awareness foundations. Of course, we would be remiss if we forgot to give a special, warm “thank you” to the wonderful parents for their generous support. In English, the tension is escalating, as students continue to develop the skill of creating a sense of dramaticas in narrative writing. Our budding writers left no shortage of creativity, suspense and anticipation on the page. “As the mischievous monkey was making fun of me [having ripped my prized, green frog from out of my hands], I saw a thick, red tongue snatch that thief into the abyss. Scared to look back, I gathered the courage, tilted my head to the side and found a humongous, purple beast staring at me unblinkingly.” - Leo Platkov, 4R Now, here’s a question for you: what does 3:30pm and half past three in the afternoon have in common? Apart from the start of after-school activities; yes, they both represent the same time. That was one of many learning objectives in our Mathematics classes this week. From converting digital time to analog time, through to timetabling your busy school day, our temporal tikes are becoming more confident rocking around the clock.
To round out our week, we give another rapturous applause to Mr Williams’ 4E class for their entertaining (and educating) whole class performance during Friday’s Year 3-6 assembly. What do you get when you cross Australian Survivor with the Year 4 Science topic ‘Properties of Materials?’. An ‘absorbing’ play ‘engineered’ to ‘reflect’ the ‘solid’ talent of our students, which would leave the most ‘impermeable’ person’s funny bone ‘fragile’. Well done, Year 4, for another strong week!

YEAR 5 & 6 ENGLISH Year 5 English This week, the year five classes have been learning about visual literacy through novels focussing on migration; namely ‘The Journey’ and ‘The Little Refugee’. They are deconstructing, interpreting and decoding the images and identifying the narrative developed through images. Here is a year five class enjoying their classwork together, completing work on how to name different visual techniques in picturebook images. [see folder online for images] Year 6 English This week, the year 6 classes continue to develop their knowledge, understanding, analysis and application of the persuasive techniques used in advertisements. The focus this week is on features of visual representation, as well as rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos and logos, as they are used in advertising. Students are interrogating the way visual and textual elements combine in an advertisement, to persuade people to purchase products, places and ideas. Students have learned that the art of advertising is extremely technical, and can be quite tricky sometimes!
PUBLIC SPEAKING This week in public speaking, Year 5 students are beginning work on their poems for performance. In class, students have been studying the poem, “One Rotation”, to understand its structure as a concrete poem, as well as its repeating patterns of descriptive and figurative language. Students have begun to think about what poem they might like to write, using “One Rotation” as the model.

YEAR 5 & 6 SCIENCE In science this week, Year 6 students completed a practical experiment investigating the effects of various amounts of sugar, when mixed with yeast and water, on the production of carbon dioxide. Students worked extremely well during this practical as they followed the long method accurately. Students also investigated what it takes to be considered ‘living’. They did this by using the acronym MRS GREN. Year 6 students are now able to identify what it takes for a plant and other organisms to be considered living. In science this week, Year 5 students began categorising plants by their characteristics. Students are building on their knowledge weekly and can now identify and explain plant adaptations. They can now categorie plants into one of five categories. Students have also studied evolution and natural selection. Year 5 can identify where evolution has taken place in some animals and how natural selection has occurred resulting in the animals we see today. In the science club, students looked at electricity and circuits! Students were given many pieces of equipment and were tasked with making working electrical circuits.
MUSIC There has been a lot of performing in Music this week especially in Years 3 – 5. Year 3 and 4 have been fine tuning their performances of the songs ‘Wonder’ and ‘Shotgun’ using the xylophones and singing while the Year 5 students have been using their own instruments to play ‘Viva la vida’ by Coldplay. It will be great to see the Year 5 video’s of their performances, which will be uploaded to Google Classroom by the end of next week. In the meantime, Year 6 have been diligently working on their digital compositions using the program ‘Soundtrap’ and the K-2 students are eagerly awaiting their Opera Australia incursion, next week.

YEAR 5 & 6 MATHEMATICS Year 5 used inverse operations and worked backwards to solve equations. Each operation was reversed to get back to the beginning. They discussed that working backwards means that you start at the end and sequentially go towards the start. Evan Butler gave the example that, if you lost your mobile, then you would start looking for it at the last place you had it and keep retracing your steps, until you hopefully find it. In this instance, you would be working backwards to find your phone. Mathematicians persistently used this strategy to solve many ‘What number did I start with?’ equations. In Year 6, students further explored the use of brackets and the order of operations to write number sentences. They learned that an operation is a mathematical process that includes the four basic operations as well as raising a number to a power and taking a root of a number. Furthermore, they recognised that if more than one pair of grouping symbols is used, the operation within the innermost grouping symbols is performed first. They explored many examples of when using grouping symbols was unnecessary. Fierce debate was had as to the best acronym to use for remembering the order of operation. BODMAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS, PEDMAS and GEMS were some of the acronyms discussed. No matter which was used, it was agreed that they all do the same thing but using different words.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE It has been a big week in the music department, with the presentation of medals for the winners of this year's Reddam House Instrumental Competition. The response was absolutely amazing, with more than 250 entries across the school. Please see earlier in this newsletter for a full list of winners and Highly Commended recipients. We look forward to featuring more of our students' excellent work in the coming weeks! Soon it will be our singers' turn, as entries closed today for our Vocal Competition, which we also very much look forward to. We have a big week coming up at the Sydney Eisteddfod, with over 300 Reddam House primary school students competing at this prestigious event next week! Students are eagerly attending and focussing on their final rehearsals, and are so very excited to be performing in a public setting for the first time in many years! K-1 String Ensemble The K-1 String Ensemble students have been working on identifying and playing different rhythms in class. We also work on learning cues from our conductor, how to play loud and soft and working together as a team. Students enjoy taking turns playing different notes to a beat and maintaining a pulse, which is quite challenging and fun at the same time. We look forward to showcasing our work in the near future at a school assembly! Year 3-4 Keyboard Extensions The Year 3-4 Keyboard Extensions group has had a great start to Term 2, learning new repertoire in a fun and new way that incorporates technology. The group have been experimenting with synthesizer sounds on their keyboards, to bring new sounds and textures to classic and familiar songs. They are looking forward to an assembly performance to showcase their work to their peers.
