Principal’s Message
By Christine Irwin
Dear Parents, As the weather gets warmer, it seems that we have skipped spring altogether and moved straight onto summer, we urge all our parents to please check your child has a hat in their bag everyday. Please pack a spare hat for your child if one is not in their bag. We also ask that sunscreen is applied to your child before they arrive at the school and if you child has allergies to certain brands of sunscreen that families are to supply special sunscreen that suits the child. Please approach one of the educators in your child’s classroom to discuss this further. Here at Reddam we are aware of the risks of the UV rays on children’s skin as outlined in Starting blocks.com.au ‘UV radiation is invisible energy from the sun and is the main cause of skin cancer. A combination of sun protection measures (hat, clothing, sunscreen, shade and sunglasses) are recommended whenever UV Index levels reach three or above’ - Starting Blocks 2022 The Cancer Council NSW states “Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for more than 95% of all skin cancers. The sunemits UV radiation but it isn’t connected to sunshine or heat like many think. This means we can’t see or feel it, so it can be difficult to understand. Babies and children are at particular risk of sunburn and skin damage because of their delicate skin. Exposure to UV radiation during the first 15 years of life greatly increases the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. ‘Children’s sensitive skin is especially vulnerable to UV radiation. Cancer Council NSW recommends that children under the age of 12 months are not exposed to direct sunlight when UV levels are 3 and above. You can check your local UV levels and the recommended sun protection times (when UV levels are 3 and above) using the free SunSmart app or weather section of most newspapers.’ - Cancer Council NSW
