Dear Friends, On behalf of our Board of Directors, volunteers and employees, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2023 American Red Cross Long Island Heroes Celebration. Thank you for joining us tonight and for the important role you play in supporting our mission. The past few years have shown us that Red Cross services are needed now more than ever. Each day our dedicated team of volunteers delivers help and hope to families who have lost everything to a home fire. They also provide support and training to the heroes who serve in our military. They teach life-saving skills and emergency preparedness to children and adults. These dedicated individuals train to be able to deploy and support our neighbors in need across the country, whether it’s responding to a tragic southern hurricane or a relentless wildfire out west. Dear Friends, On behalf of the entire Board of Directors for the American Red Cross on Long Island, we are thrilled to welcome you to the 2023 American Red Cross on Long Island Heroes Celebration. We know that we speak for the entire Board when we say that we are proud to serve this organization that touches so many lives on Long Island and far beyond. The Red Cross Long Island Chapter is a volunteer powered organization that boasts more than 800 amazing volunteers from every walk of life. With the financial support of people like you, our dedicated volunteers care for communities in need during the most challenging of times and in the most challenging of circumstances. The Red Cross is there 365/24/7 to bring hope when and where it is needed most. The Red Cross mission goes far beyond responding to disasters. The Long Island Red Cross installs free smoke alarms; provides emergency preparedness education; teaches safety skills like First Aid and CPR; reunites families separated by armed conflict and natural disasters; and offers compassionate support to veterans, active military personnel and their families. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate a remarkable humanitarian mission that has supported Long Island for over 100 years, and as we honor an extraordinary group of individuals and partners who embody the spirit of the Red Cross. Corporate Leadership Award Honoree

First Quality Enterprises, LLC and its affiliates, a manufacturer of household paper, adult care, feminine care, and baby care products, has been a committed American Red Cross supporter since 2012, contributing to unprecedented disasters such as Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Harvey. They continue to be steadfast partners of the Red Cross, most recently supporting communities impacted by Hurricane Ida in 2021 and Hurricane Ian in 2022.

Barbara and Robbie Donno Humanitarian Award Honorees

Meet Robert and Barbara Donno. Barbara, born and raised in Easton, PA, and Robert from Manhasset, NY, met during their college years at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Barbara’s journey as the Mayor of the Village of Plandome Manor, recently reelected to her ninth term, is a testament to her steadfast dedication. She’s shown this dedication not only through her role as Mayor but also through her extensive background in education, having served for nine years on the Manhasset School District Board of Education, including four years as President. Her commitment to education is further highlighted by her past as an elementary school teacher. Barbara’s influence extends well beyond her Village, as seen in her involvement on the executive board of the Nassau County Village Officials Association, having served as President advocating for the county’s 64 incorporated villages. Additionally, she currently serves as Director of Government Affairs for New York State Senator Jack Martins. Barbara’s active participation in various committees, such as the Finance Policy Committee and the Women’s Advisory Committee for the New York State Conference of Mayors, reflects her dedication to effective governance. Her accomplishments extend beyond the public sector, with roles on boards such as the Long Island Regional Planning Council and the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund, showcasing her commitment to broader community development and welfare. Robbie joined Manhasset Rotary in 1971 and became its President in 1975. That was the year that changed his life. There was a plea for help from the Rotary Club of Kampala, Uganda on behalf of 5-year-old Grace Agwaru who was suffering from a congenital heart defect. Grace was brought to St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY, where she received her life-saving surgery, and the Gift of Life Program had its start.

the world. Reflecting on Rotary and Gift of Life, Robbie says; “I have been a part of Gift of Life for 48 years and have seen the heartfelt involvement of thousands of people around the world. Rotary is the platform that has allowed us to make a difference. This experience has confirmed my belief that I am always surrounded by good people, unsung heroes who improve the lives of people that they don’t know, for no other reason than their need. I am blessed to be in their company.” Robbie was a principal of Donno Company, Inc. from 1970 to 1997. He was Vice President of Eastern Waste of New York from 1997–1999 and is now a principal at Lemcor, Inc. of Newark, NJ. He has been a leader in the solid waste industry for over 50 years and has received many awards for his leadership in the industry and for his philanthropic endeavors. Individually and as a unit, Barbara and Robbie Donno show devotion to their community and beyond through professional work and volunteer time, making meaningful differences in the lives of others. They recently celebrated 54 years of marriage, creating a life enriched by their two children, Jackie and Matthew, as well as their cherished role as grandparents to Emma and James. Their years together have been full of adventure and have taken them through the landscapes of the United States, Europe, parts of Africa, Central America, South America and Asia. Although they enjoy traveling, they find the most joy in spending time with their extended family and especially their grandchildren. Their journey is an inspiring testament to love, family and service.

In 2003, Gift of Life International was formed and Robbie was elected its first Chairman. Gift of Life has saved the lives of almost 50,000 children from 80 countries around

Kevin Rivera Good Samaritan Hero

Kevin Rivera, a former Amazon delivery driver, bravely rescued a family of six and their two pets from a house fire while on his delivery route in Syosset, NY, last September. Kevin saw that one of the houses he often delivered to was on fire and called 911 before rushing inside to help. Despite a language barrier, Kevin managed to communicate with the family and led them to safety.

Elisa DiStefano Newsday On-Camera Senior Lifestyle Host Master of Ceremonies

With almost two decades of experience in live and breaking news, Elisa DiStefano is an award-winning entertainment reporter, host, content creator and entrepreneur. Covering everything from A-List movie premieres to summer in the Hamptons, Elisa has interviewed some of entertainment’s best talent. For 17 years, Elisa anchored news, traffic and entertainment segments daily on News 12 Long Island. In 2023, she helped launch NewsdayTV as the Morning Show anchor. She is currently the Senior Lifestyle Host at Newsday. Elisa has hosted and produced segments featuring everything from food to fashion to personalities as diverse as Julie Andrews to Justin Bieber, Bill Murray to Billy Joel to (a little one on one with) Eli Manning and Venus Williams. When not in front of the camera, she’s running MO’NELISA Italian Restaurant and The Point Bar & Grill, owned by her and husband, CBS Sports and ESPN College Basketball Analyst, Mo Cassara. Elisa lends her time to many local and national charities. She was recognized as one of the Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business, the “Best of Long Island” many years running, and as a “Trailblazer in Media” for her continued support in uplifting diverse women through media. She lives by the beach with her husband Mo, son Christian, daughter Elle and is a graduate of Boston University College of Communication.

Deborah Kerr Special Guest

Deborah Kerr has been volunteering with the Long Island Chapter of the American Red Cross for the past 23 years. Over those years she has served as a Mass Care associate, Disaster Action Team (DAT) responder, DAT Captain, Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) driver, Logistics volunteer, Shelter Manager, SOLER team associate and HAM Radio Operator. Deborah’s volunteer career history in Disaster Response includes the World Trade Center ground zero response, providing Mass Care as well as providing assistance during Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Henri as a Shelter Manager. She has logged countless hours of responses as a member of DAT, both day and night, providing assistance to those that needed help. Most recently, Deborah has received recognition from Nassau Office of Emergency Management for her outstanding service during Tropical Storm Henri.

Celia Vollmer Special Guest

In 22 years at the Brentwood Public Library, Celia Vollmer has filled countless roles including workplace safety trainer, supervising the computer department, hiring and scheduling pages, and most recently, as community outreach coordinator. This most recent position has allowed her to combine her passion for the library with her energetic support for local organizations. One of Celia’s proudest moments was the start of the library’s partnership with Suffolk County Community Service in 2004. After becoming certified as a community service agent, Celia led the program for eight years and saw 62 students complete probation community service, 50 graduate from high school, 35 get accepted to college, 12 continue their education at technical colleges, one enroll in medical school, and six hired to work at the library. Supported and mentored by library staff members, formerly struggling students achieved academic, career, and life success. Celia also has been an American Red Cross volunteer since 2008. She is the Feeding Lead for the Mass Care Logistics Team on Long Island, Disaster Action Team Supervisor and Red Cross Ambassador. Through the American Red Cross, Celia has provided mass care throughout Greater New York and has participated as a medical team leader for the NYC Marathon, Strike Team Leader for the Papal Visit and a scene lead for over 600 fires, home explosions, gas leaks, bomb explosions, apartment/condo fires and snowstorms. In 2014, Celia was recognized by the Red Cross on Long Island with its highest honor, the Clara Barton Leadership Award. Celia’s love for her community can be also seen in her enthusiastic volunteer work for the NYS Mentoring Partnership at Brentwood Hemlock Park Elementary School, MBK Mentor, Boy Scouts of America, Civil Air Patrol, Brentwood School District PTA, Suffolk Region PTA, NYS PTA Parents as Reading Partners Committee and the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library Council Committee where she served as chairman. Celia has served as a Chairman of Long Island Blood Services as well as supplies coordinator for Pronto of Long Island. She is the former Director of Education for Brentwood Summit Council. In her roles with the Red Cross and other groups, Celia has become known for her engaging workshops and seminars. For more than 48 years, Celia has been a resident of the Brentwood school district. In the 6th grade she met Chuck, her future husband, and in 1980 graduated from Sonderling High School. In 2004, their son Charles graduated from Brentwood High School and works as a Technical Team Leader for Bloomberg TV & Radio.

William Roland Auctioneer

Billy Roland and his brother and partner Robert began their careers downtown in Greenwich Village as dealers in 1973, surrounded by a litany of top dealers and a dozen since closed auctions, including their own Great Gatsby’s in 1989. Fast forward to 2010 when Roland Antiques embarked on a new endeavor, still in Greenwich Village, as Roland Auctions NY in the St. Denis Building, 799 Broadway, at East 11th Street. Specializing in estate sales, large and small, their monthly auctions became a staple event for dealers, decorators, and retail buyers alike. In 2018, Roland Auctions relocated from NYC to Glen Cove, NY, Long Island’s North Shore, the historic “Gold Coast.” Their auctions are presented in their intimate gallery space and online. In addition to monthly estate sales, Roland conducts multiple curated and singleowner sales throughout the year, maintaining a brick-and-mortar auction house with approximately 20 staff. In 2012, Billy appeared on the Discovery Channel’s “Final Offer” where he used his expertise to bid for various treasured items. He also had a guest segment on the Today Show’s, “What’s In Your Attic.” He has been featured in other news publications as early as 1980s. Just this year, Billy received the prestigious Directors Award from the Appraisers Association of America at their annual conference. Billy has offered his auctioneer skills in many charity auctions for his community, including American Cancer Society, Locust Valley Boys Club, Lab School, Friends Academy, Penguin Theatre Group, Roundabout Theatre, Salmagundi Club, NYU, Columbia and Creek Club to name a few. Billy and Robert are enjoying their 50th year in the trade.

Our Mission

American Red Cross on Long Island The American Red Cross on Long Island serves nearly 3 million people in Nassau and Suffolk counties. We provide free emergency assistance — shelter, food, clothing and emotional support — following more than 350 local disasters each year; support military members, veterans and their families; and teach skills that save lives.

United States Disaster Response In Fiscal Year 2022, generous donors and dedicated volunteers helped the Red Cross bring relief to individuals and families in need across the country.

Over 2 million meals and snacks served with partners.

More than 220,000 households received 3.1 million relief items.

Some 132,000 households were supported with financial assistance and recovery aid.

Over 161,000 overnight shelter and hotel stays were provided.

Service to the Armed Forces

In Fiscal Year 2022, the Red Cross stood with our military community in the face of new and unique challenges while continuing to provide daily comfort and care.

Emergency communication services were provided to nearly 87,000 service members and their families. Critical community services were delivered to nearly 136,000 service members, veterans, their families and caregivers. Over 292,000 military family members were educated on what to do when faced with a family crisis while on active duty. More than 19,000 service members, veterans, their families and caregivers helped through resiliency workshops.

Home Fire Campaign Highlights Every day, seven people die in home fires, most often in homes without working smoke alarms. That’s why the American Red Cross launched our Home Fire Campaign in 2014 to save lives.

At least 1,919 lives were saved.

More than 1 million households were made safer.

Over 2.9 million children reached through home fire preparedness programs.

Over 2.6 million free smoke alarms were installed.

International Services Highlights In Fiscal Year 2022, the American Red Cross contributed millions to the global Red Cross network to help alleviate the suffering of those impacted by the Ukraine crisis. This support allows teams on the ground to provide lifesaving aid, such as food, shelter, water, medical care and mental health support.

More than 1.6 million households were visited to encourage measles and rubella vaccination.

More than 4,600 families separated by international crises were reconnected.

36 countries were supported by disaster response.

More than 113,000 individuals were reached through disaster preparedness activities.

I am delighted to congratulate the 2023 Hero Honorees on the occasion of the American Red Cross Longs Island Heroes Celebration and Gala. I want to recognize and congratulate the recipients: First Quality Enterprises on receiving the Corporate Leadership Award, Barbara and Robbie Donno on receiving the Humanitarian Award, and Kevin Rivera on receiving the Good Samaritan Award. Since its establishment, First Quality Enterprises has been a key benefactor to the community by dedicating themselves to raising the quality of people’s lives. First Quality has demonstrated their willingness to help by raising millions of dollars for our local hospitals during the pandemic, providing consistent and much needed support following major storms such as Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Ida, and Hurricane Ian. To combat child poverty, they donated millions of dollars to the Cradles for Crayons program. The team behind First Quality Enterprises have proven time and time again that they are true leaders and as a Great Neck business, I am thrilled to represent them in the New York State Assembly. I have the honor of calling Barbara and Robbie Donno not only partners in government, but also constituents and friends who have repeatedly demonstrated their devotion to others and our community. I’ve had the privilege of working with Mayor Barbara Donno throughout my term in office, and she has always demonstrated herself to be a fearless advocate for the Village of Plandome Manor. Robbie Donno has dedicated his life to improving the wellbeing of others through his organization, Gift of Life International. Mr. Donno has helped save the lives of over 38,000 children, which is truly incredible. The work of both Barbara Donno and Robbie Donno have helped not only the residents of Manhasset, but also children in need across the world, and I couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments and this recognition. Kevin Rivera, a former amazon delivery driver, was delivering packages when he suddenly saw a house on fire. Without hesitation, Mr. Rivera displayed his bravery and fearlessness to help others as he rushed into the house, saving all 6 family members and their 2 dogs. Despite the danger Mr. Rivera faced, he showed his willingness to help others and better his community, making him truly a good Samaritan. I wish you a night full of festivities at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, as we honor First Quality Enterprises, Barbara and Robbie Donno, and Kevin Rivera for their constant effort in improving the world around us.
