WELCOME Dear Friends, On behalf of the American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter, it is our honor and pleasure to welcome you — once again in person! — to our 2022 benefit fundraiser, the Red & White Ball: A Salute to Service and Valor. With a spotlight on our organization’s longstanding commitment to servicemen and women — which dates back to the Civil War when American Red Cross founder Clara Barton first assisted wounded soldiers on the battlefield — the event is a celebration of this legacy, our humanitarian mission, and those who make this work possible. Our esteemed honorees tonight all embody the noble principles of duty and service, an ethos shared by our volunteers who carry out our lifesaving and lifechanging work 365 days-a-year, and those who provide the funds that allow us to keep helping. To our Exceptional Service Honorees General Mark A. Milley and Mrs. Hollyanne Milley, our Humanitarian Honorees Colleen and Philip Hempleman, and our Corporate Leadership Honoree Carlson & Carlson, Inc., we say THANK YOU for your service and for the example you set for all of us. EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AWARD General Mark A. Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Mrs. Hollyanne Milley General Mark A. Milley and Mrs. Hollyanne Milley exemplify a lifetime of service to our nation. As the 20th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Milley is the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, and the principal military advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council. Mrs. Milley has served her community as a nurse for nearly four decades and is a dedicated volunteer with many organizations, including the American Red Cross.
HUMANITARIAN AWARD Colleen and Philip Hempleman For Colleen and Philip Hempleman, two pillars of philanthropy in Greenwich, Connecticut, giving back is a priority. Colleen is a longtime member of the American Red Cross Metro NY North (formerly Greenwich) Chapter Board of Directors. In her more than 25 years of service steering the Red Cross mission locally, she has mentored and recruited countless fellow volunteers and board members and served on almost every committee. Colleen’s leadership has greatly contributed to the growth of the Red Cross in this region and beyond. As Chair of the chapter Red Cross Ball over multiple years, Colleen has elevated the profile of this annual event and raised critical funds for the organization. For the 2002 Greenwich Red Cross Ball, Colleen’s tireless efforts enabled the Red Cross to purchase The Spirit of America, a large kitchen on wheels that mobilizes to provide food for individuals and families impacted by large-scale emergencies. Following Superstorm Sandy, this mobile kitchen prepared and cooked over 20,000 meals for disaster survivors. Colleen has also served as Chair of the American Red Cross Metro NY North Chapter’s Service to the Armed Forces Committee, a role that saw her spearhead efforts to support our troops at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland and at Camp Arifjan, a United States Army installation in Kuwait. In 2015, the American Red Cross presented Colleen with the Tiffany Circle Una Award, a prestigious honor given to a woman “who exemplifies the mission of the Red Cross and is engaged in the work of the Red Cross in a major way.” Through their family foundation, Colleen and Philip have donated generously to the Red Cross, including funding for active-duty military members, veterans, and their families in the US and around the world. In recognition of their commitment, the Hemplemans are members of the prestigious American Red Cross Chairman’s Council. In addition to their commitment to the Red Cross, Colleen and Philip have supported numerous other community endeavors, and through their shared compassion, they have touched countless lives.
CORPORATE LEADERSHIP AWARD Carlson & Carlson, Incorporated Carlson & Carlson, Incorporated is a family-owned, full-service, independent insurance agency headquartered in Greenwich (Riverside), Connecticut with offices in NYC and California. Carlson & Carlson’s steadfast commitment to giving back began in 1920 when the firm was founded. Their civic leadership has been passed down through generations of Carlson family members, setting an example for their employees, clients, and the localities they serve. “Carlson & Carlson gives back to the community,” said President of Carlson & Carlson, American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter Board Member, and proud Greenwich resident, Peter Carlson, Jr., “because this community has given so much to us.” Carlson & Carlson demonstrates its humanitarian spirit through a commitment to volunteerism and generous financial support for local non-profits, including the American Red Cross.
LEAD VOCALIST | WEST POINT BAND Sergeant Major MaryKay Messenger US Army Sergeant Major MaryKay Messenger is a native of Newburgh, New York, and a well-known soloist throughout the Hudson Valley region, performing classical, Broadway, jazz, and popular music. She is the premier vocalist for the West Point Band and first sang with them at their season finale 1812 concert in 1980, at the age of 12. She continued throughout the years as a guest vocalist for a variety of concerts until she joined the Army in 1996. Sergeant Major Messenger performed as a soloist for a European Summer Broadway Tour and has appeared locally in several musicals, including Godspell, Shenandoah, and Grease. She has sung operatic roles in Montclair, New Jersey; with the Amato Opera Theatre in New York City; and at the Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie, New York. She has performed with the famous Irish Tenors, Frank Patterson, John McDermott, the Nexus percussion ensemble, and soprano Sylvia McNair. Sergeant Major Messenger performed as a featured soloist for the West Point Band’s Bicentennial Concert in Carnegie Hall, the Royal Norwegian Military Band in Oslo, Norway, and as the first American military vocalist to perform with the military band of the People’s Liberation Army in Beijing, China. She recently performed as a soloist for the Boston Pops 2013 Holiday Concert at Eisenhower Hall Theatre. She has sung the National Anthem for many highprofile events, such as the 2012 Bruce Springsteen concert “Stand Up for Heroes” at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, at Madison Square Garden for the New York Knicks, at the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange, and at Radio City Music Hall for World Championship Boxing. She has also sung regularly at Yankee Stadium, including a live, televised performance of "God Bless America" for Game 1 of the 2009 World Series. Sergeant Major Messenger also sings for numerous New York Jets and Giants football games. She is often highlighted in Army football halftime shows, and she performs for many official functions at West Point and in New York City for distinguished guests, politicians, and international dignitaries. Sergeant Major Messenger has studied voice with Walter Blazer, Mya Vernole, and Phyllis Curtin.
AUCTIONEER Jacqueline Towers-Perkins Jacqueline is an international auctioneer and fundraising consultant, serving non-profit institutions and holding auctions at high profile charity galas and benefit events in the United States and Europe. Her clients include international royalty from HRH Prince Charles to Jay-Z and Beyonce, and she has shared the stage with leaders of finance, entertainment, tech and politics. Over the years she has auctioneered to thousands of bidders and raised millions for charity. Additionally, she holds the position of Vice President, Director of Post-War & Contemporary Art at Bonhams Auctioneers. The auction house was established in 1793 and has salerooms globally including in New York, London, Hong Kong, Paris and Los Angeles.

HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS October 2014 to June 2021
Since 2014, Home Fire Campaign volunteers have joined fire departments and community groups at Sound the Alarm events all over the U.S., visiting homes to provide free smoke alarms, conduct fire prevention and safety education, and help families make an escape plan. Since 2020, this work looked different due to COVID-19, but our outreach and education efforts continued with partners like local fire departments.
