Dear Friends, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2019 American Red Cross Gala. The steadfast support of our caring donors, volunteers and community partners empowers our organization’s vital work, and I deeply appreciate your ongoing dedication to our lifesaving Red Cross mission. While I’m truly sorry that I can’t be with you this evening, I am grateful for this opportunity to thank all Red Crossers—both in the Greater New York area and across the country—for their unwavering commitment. Across our nation, the Red Cross responds to more than 62,000 disasters every year. This number includes everything from significant events like Hurricane Dorian, to single family home fires. In addition to our disaster response work, the Red Cross provides comfort and hope in the face of emergencies each year through the other aspects of our mission: delivering 6.6 million units of lifesaving blood products to hospital patients in need; teaching more than 6 million people vital training and skills through our health and safety offerings; providing more than 420,000 critical emergency services to our military members, veterans and their families; and helping millions of people around the globe through disaster preparedness and response, and disease prevention efforts. None of this work would be possible without the remarkable generosity of the American people and the commitment of our compassionate volunteers—who are true humanitarians. This evening, you will have an opportunity to recognize another group of humanitarians, whose passion for serving others represents the very best of our Red Cross spirit. They include some of our most valued partners, who have gone above and beyond to raise awareness of and support for the critical needs of our mission, and a few extradordinary individuals who all possessed the courage to step up and help others in the face of some of the most difficult situations imaginable. In closing, it remains a tremendous privilege for me to lead this wonderful American institution. I am profoundly humbled by and grateful for your impactful support of our essential humanitarian efforts. Dear Friends, On behalf of the American Red Cross Greater New York Region, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 American Red Cross Gala: Heroes Among Us, a celebration of our humanitarian mission and those who make this work possible. Every day I am reminded of the urgent need for our important mission and am deeply humbled by the generosity of those who make it possible for our Red Cross team members to carry out this critical work. This includes all of you here tonight. You allow us to deliver lifesaving assistance following some of the most difficult moments imaginable. Between 5 and 25 times a day, the Greater NY Red Cross races to a disaster scene to provide food, shelter and comfort to a local family. When large disasters strike outside this region, like the devastating California wildfires last fall, our local team members put their lives on hold to join fellow Red Cross colleagues far from home to deliver help and hope. Every day, the Red Cross is also focused on helping prevent disasters by building more resilient communities. Whether installing free smoke alarms in vulnerable neighborhoods through our partnership with the Fire Department of New York; or empowering communities with emergency preparedness education; or teaching first aid, CPR, and water safety to thousands of children and adults, making sure communities are prepared and able to recover from disasters is one of our biggest priorities. The Red Cross is also there for our brave service members, veterans, and their families every day. Whether at the time of enlistment, during a deployment, or once they return to their homes and communities, Red Cross volunteers are there with support for these heroes who have sacrificed so much. And every day, hundreds of generous donors like you roll up your sleeves to donate lifesaving blood. As part of this special evening, we recognize and thank our corporate partner Jones Lang LaSalle for their community engagement and philanthropy. We are so thrilled to present the 2019 Vanguard Award to HBO in recognition of the inspiring and successful 2019 Bleed For The Throne partnership and campaign. The 2019 Humanitarian Award recipient, Dr. Jeff Vacirca, embodies the spirit of the American Red Cross in his work and his commitment to his community. We will also shine a spotlight on a group of selfless heroes, from here in New York City—Anthony Rosa Compres, Oswaldo Dela Cruz, and Dr. Theodore Strange—and from Paradise, California—Kevin McKay, Mary Petersen Ludwig, Abigail Gerspacher-Davis and Allyn Pierce. As each news cycle unfolds, we are struck by the stories of tragedy that seem to fill our screens. However, behind every headline of disaster and heartache are stories of everyday heroes who do whatever is necessary to help ease the pain of those suffering. That’s what tonight’s event is all about: recognizing those who make the world a little better through their compassion, altruism and action. The Red Cross is led by 5000 volunteers in Greater New York—more than 90% of our workforce—from all walks of life giving back to help others. Our families, friends and communities are stronger and safer because of these selfless individuals. I’m honored to work alongside them as they offer compassion, comfort and strength to individuals following disasters large and small. What’s important to note is that Red Cross efforts are not limited to disaster response. Our teams also teach preparedness and lifesaving skills classes; they help reunite families separated by armed conflict or natural disaster; they offer compassionate support to veterans and active military personnel and their families; and they volunteer in Red Cross community outreach and youth programs. It’s your financial support that allows these incredible individuals to carry out this lifesaving work. Tonight is a chance to celebrate the urgent mission of this organization; to recognize some of our generous partners; and to honor extraordinary heroes whose selflessness and sacrifice inspire us all. On behalf of JLL, and our more than 92,000 colleagues in over 80 countries globally, we are honored to accept the American Red Cross Corporate Leadership Award. Congratulations to all the civic leaders recognized this evening, whose bravery and honor truly embody the Red Cross’ humanitarian mission. From disaster relief, providing lifesaving blood donations, and supporting our military members, veterans and their families, the American Red Cross saves lives and changes them for the better. From the floods in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Indiana and Ohio to the hurricanes hitting the East Coast, they’ve provided services that are more integral than ever given our recent increase in extreme weather. We’ve had a long-spanning relationship with the American Red Cross, which is one of JLL’s community pillar partners in the United States. We’ve proudly sponsored American Red Cross events across the country, including the 2018 NYC Gala and the 2019 Tiffany Circle luncheon. We have also held several blood drives at our JLL offices and participated in the Pillowcase Project by packing essential items in a pillowcase for easy transport during a disaster. And we supported the Sound the Alarm campaign for the past two years, which reduces home fire deaths by installing free smoke alarms in communities of need and providing fire safety education. Our commitment to improving our communities is something we live by every day. We’ve also teamed up with Feeding America to fight hunger and created over 600,000 meals for hungry people in the United States. And this year, JLLers across the globe gave more than 98,000 hours and $5 million to community causes. Humanitarian Honoree JEFF VACIRCA, MD

Dr. Vacirca, a board certified hematologist and oncologist, is being honored for his compassion and commitment to patient care, on which many families contending with cancer issues have relied and for his steadfast support of the Red Cross mission. Before receiving this latest accolade, he was a recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt award for outstanding dedication to patient care and has been named in Newsdayâ€™s Top Doctors. Dr. Vacirca serves as a consulting physician for the Long Island Association for Aids Care (LIAAC) and was honored for his role in enabling LIAAC staff to bring state of the art HIV testing to New York. He is the immediate past president of the Community Oncology Alliance (COA), medical director for Amerisource Bergen specialty group, a Scientific Advisory Board Member for Caris Life Sciences, director at OneOncology, director at Spectrum Pharmaceuticals and serves as a medical board advisor for Flatiron Health, located in New York City. Additionally, he is vice-chairman of the board for Odonate Therapeutics, a company he cofounded in 2016, which is dedicated to the development of best-in-class therapeutics that improve and extend the lives of patients with cancer. In keeping with his humanitarian efforts, in 2014 Dr. Vacirca founded the New York Cancer Foundation, of which he is the chair of the board of directors. The Foundation provides financial assistance to patients undergoing treatment for cancer. Since its inception, the New York Cancer Foundation has helped hundreds of patients and their families providing grants to pay non-medical expenses including rent, mortgage, utility bills and transportation to and from treatment. Likewise, while leading the New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, Dr. Vacirca has been passionate about providing the best cancer treatments to patients close to home, recently opening of a new Port Jefferson Station cancer center to serve the area. â€œWe want to be able to offer the newest therapies to all of our patients on Long Island and this is our starting point; With more than fifty clinical trials available we can bring the newest and best drugs to our patients. This is a proud moment for those dedicated to comprehensive cancer care,â€? said Dr. Vacirca, who remains committed to serving the community on all levels.

Vanguard Honoree The 2019 American Red Cross Heroes Among Us Vanguard Award Honoree is HBO in recognition of the inspiring and successful 2019 Bleed For The Throne partnership and campaign. Game of Thrones is no mere book or show—it’s become an entire cultural world, filled with creativity and fueled by unparalleled fandom and devotion. To communicate this, we wanted to demonstrate the lengths the world—from fans to brands—would go #ForTheThrone. While #ForTheThrone was designed as a campaign platform to promote the final season, we also wanted it to demonstrate GoT’s unique ability to inspire devotion for the good of humanity—for the betterment of the world. And in the spirit of a show famous for its gory tendencies, what better way than to spill a little blood (the real kind)? When extreme winter weather caused an emergency blood shortage for the American Red Cross, a show known for its bloodshed rallied the world’s most diehard fans to prove their devotion to the show—by bleeding for it. Anyone who donated blood for the throne had the chance to win the ultimate prize—to watch the season eight premiere ahead of the worldwide release. “Bleed For The Throne” kicked off at SXSW with an immersive experience that let people walk in the bloody footsteps of characters in the show–and then make the ultimate sacrifice by bleeding for the throne themselves. After giving blood, a 27-minute original score performed by a 24-person choir celebrated our donors before ushering them into a war camp where they interacted with 80+ actors playing various Game of Thrones characters. Using Snapchat’s AR functionality, people could activate exclusive easter eggs hidden throughout the experience. After SXSW, Bleed For The Throne held over 3,000 US blood drives, eventually spreading to 18 other countries in need of blood donations. Anyone who bled #ForTheThrone during the campaign period received bespoke GoT swag such as an Oberyn Martell stress ball, T-shirts designed by Gian Galang, who also created the key art depicting the Iron Throne and the main characters portrayed in blood. In the face of a blood shortage caused by a weak US winter recruitment period, “Bleed for the Throne” replenished the supply in emphatic fashion. 352,344 people donated over the campaign period. Not only does this reflect an increase of donations by 12 percent versus the year prior; most heartening to us was that one out of every five donations came from new donors. In the end, new donors grew 21 percent versus the year prior and contributed 61,519 units (for the throne), inspiring a new generation of blood donors for life.

FISCAL YEAR 2019 STATISTICS (JULY 2018 TO JUNE 2019) The American Red Cross Greater New York Region serves more than 13 million people in New York City; Long Island; Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan and Westchester counties; and Greenwich, Connecticut.

We responded to 2,306 emergencies and disasters a year—home fires, building collapses, floods and more.

We helped 12,368 people a year affected by those disasters—with shelter, food, clothing and emotional support, at no cost.

We’ve trained 27,054 adults and children in emergency preparedness.

We taught 81,881 people lifesaving skills—First Aid, CPR and AED.

We received 19,765 lifesaving blood and platelet donations.

4,545 service members and family members reached via deployment briefings. 4,483 Service to the Armed Forces emergency services cases serviced for the region.

Heroes of the Paradise, California Wildfires

Kevin McKay was a school bus driver at Ponderosa Elementary School in Paradise, Calif. On that fateful day, he drove 22 stranded students on his bus to safety along gridlocked, dark roads as pockets of fire burned all around them. Teachers Mary Petersen Ludwig and Abigail Gerspacher-Davis assisted during the journey, helping to reassure the kids and using pieces of torn, dampened shirts to help the children breathe. All the students safely reunited with their families.

Allyn Pierce

As the Camp Fire intensified, Registered Nurse and ICU Manager at Adventist Health Feather River Hospital in Paradise, Allyn Pierce worked tirelessly to help evacuate the hospital, including those with the most critical needs. After the last patients left the facility Pierce evacuated himself, taking with him fellow colleagues in his truck. In the middle of his journey, Pierce drove back to the hospital site amid the smoke and flames and helped build a makeshift emergency room in the parking lot to treat new patients who found themselves stranded by the fire with nowhere else to go.

Good Samaritan Heroes

Dr. Theodore Strange

Dr. Theodore Strange of Staten Island, NY, is a 2019 Good Samaritan for his lifesaving efforts during the 2018 TCS NYC Marathon. During the race, Dr. Strange performed CPR on a fellow runner and worked with emergency responders to administer a defibrillator. After she began breathing on her own and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, Dr. Strange went on to complete his own race. Dr. Strange is the vice chairman of primary care at Staten Island University Hospital Northwell Health.

When Bronx resident, Anthony Rosa Compres was a senior at International Community High School, he completed a New York state mandated CPR class. Just two weeks later, he performed life-saving CPR on a community member who collapsed in his neighborhood. His instructor, Oswaldo Dela Cruz, also from the Bronx, has dedicated his life to teaching and empowering kids. He is deeply committed to teaching local kids CPR and, to date, has taught these lifesaving skills to nearly 500 students.

Jacob Soboroff

MASTER OF CEREMONIES

Jacob Soboroff is a Los Angeles-based MSNBC Correspondent and Anchor who reports across NBC News and MSNBC. In 2018, Jacob spent months reporting from the U.S. - Mexico border on President Trump’s immigration policies, and was one of the first journalists to tour two South Texas facilities housing migrant children separated from their families under the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy. Amid the separation crisis, Soboroff hosted a Dateline NBC special report, The Dividing Line, a deep-dive into the separation policy and the realities of life along both sides of the border. Jacob received multiple awards for his reporting on the separation of migrant families at the border, including the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism and the Hillman Prize from the Sidney Hillman Foundation. Also in 2018, Jacob reported on the real-world effects of climate change from 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle for the Today Show series Top of the World, and ahead of the midterm elections, he explored the issues Americans cared about most in What Matters?, a Today Show and MSNBC series. What Matters? With Jacob Soboroff aired as MSNBC documentary special the weekend before Election Day. In 2017 he was a part of NBC and MSNBC special coverage of major news events including the Inauguration, the opioid crisis, the Great American Eclipse, the Charlottesville attack, Hurricane Irma, the Global Citizen Festival, the Las Vegas mass shooting and the California wildfires. Jacob hosted two hour-long MSNBC original documentaries in 2017: The Trump Equation, about the factors that led to President Trump’s victory, and One Nation Over Dosed, about fentanyl, the drug fueling America’s record-breaking overdose death rate. In 2016, Jacob was part of the network’s group of “Road Warriors,” traveling across the nation to cover the 2016 election and the 2016 Republican and Democratic conventions. During the campaign, Variety said Jacob’s “dispatches from around America have the vibe of a hipper, latter-day Charles Kuralt — commiserating with a hover boat driver in the Everglades and an ice fisherman atop a lake in New Hampshire, or riding a bike with an immigrant ‘dreamer’ to get her to confide how it feels to meet other immigrant children on the campaign trail.” Before joining MSNBC in 2015, he hosted projects for a variety of platforms including Vanity Fair, YouTube, Participant Media, The Huffington Post, MTV, AMC, NBC, CNN, PBS and NPR. Jacob has been a longtime advocate of protecting the right to vote through the Why Tuesday?organization, and gave a TED Talk about election reform. He also serves on the associates board of the education-focused nonprofit City Year Los Angeles and is a service ambassador for Points of Light.

Auctioneer Gabriel Butu is a fundraising auctioneer and consultant based in Los Angeles. A proud lse, Christie’s, and Paddle8 alum, he spent four years in New York working amongst the elite of art and charity auctioneers, raising millions of dollars along the way for the likes of Elizabeth Taylor’s Amfar, Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation, and Robinson Cano’s RC22, before bringing his fundraising philosophy to the west coast in 2015. Gabriel’s primary focus is on deeply empathizing with the organizations he works with, and understanding their goals both short- and long-term. To fully embody these during the fundraising process is modus operandi #1 of any fundraiser, no less auctioneer. From that foundation, Gabriel works to bring invigorating energy to the room and inspire the audience to show its maximum support… All with a touch of european elegance!

Cocktail Entertainment The New York Edge Jazz Quartet is derived from the noted New York Edge Orchestra. It’s calling card includes an eclectic mix of jazz, swing, and lounge styles. A Look Back APRIL 2019 Support for Service Members at Walter Reed Volunteers gathered supplies for wounded service members and delivered them to Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.

MAY 2019 Sounding the Alarm to End Home Fires Red Cross volunteer, employees and partners came together to install thousands of free smoke alarms across NYC, Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley.

AUGUST 2019 Relief for Bronx Residents After Massive Fire Red Cross came to the aid of hundreds of Bronx residents after a huge multiple alarm fire left them homeless.

SEPTEMBER 2018 Hurricane Dorian The Greater New York Red Cross volunteers and employees deployed across the East Coast in advance of Hurricane Dorian. Red Cross also deployed staff to the Bahamas to support the international relief operation.

Our Services Disaster Response When disaster strikes, the American Red Cross is there. From a home fire that leaves one family in need of shelter to a hurricane that devastates an entire region, the Red Cross is a constant presence after a disaster—large or small—helping those affected begin to rebuild their lives. As the nation’s premier emergency-response organization, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, emotional support, health services, relief supplies and other forms of support to thousands of people impacted by disasters each year. Training Services The American Red Cross ensures that businesses and individuals have the training, knowledge and tools they need to take action before, during and after a disaster or emergency. We prepare the workplace and individuals though our First Aid/CPR trainings, AED sales and our Ready Rating programs. These trainings provide the public with the knowledge and supplies needed to effectively respond to a medical emergency or disaster in the workplace. The Red Cross Preparedness and Health and Safety trainings ensure we’re all prepared to take action when needed.

Our Services Services to the Armed Forces Every day, men and women answer the call to serve our country. As one of the longest-standing organizations serving America’s military members, the American Red Cross provides steadfast care throughout a service member’s career and beyond to ensure our heroes receive the support and assistance they need. The Red Cross leads education and resiliency programs to assist military personnel and their families during deployments and separations and serves as an emergency-communication link between him/ her and family back home. Red Cross volunteers also work in military and Veterans Affairs hospitals, assisting with rehabilitation, material support and visiting patients and their families. Whenever and wherever a U.S. service member is called to duty, the Red Cross is ready to assist. International Services The American Red Cross and more than 190 global Red Cross and Red Crescent partners make up the world’s largest humanitarian network. Together, we protect and improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. The Red Cross not only provides relief following international disasters, but continually works to reduce risks and prepare communities before disasters strike. For example, in the last decade the Red Cross and its Measles Initiative partners vaccinated more than 1 billion children against measles— one of the world’s deadliest diseases. Through its commitment to international relief and making the world a safer place, the Red Cross provides a lasting impact on the most vulnerable communities around the globe.

Blood Services Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. As the largest supplier of blood in the U.S., the American Red Cross works to ensure that lifesaving blood is available for patients in need. Each day, the Red Cross must collect 17,000 units of blood to meet the needs of accident and burn victims, surgical candidates and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross doesn’t just collect blood. We were among the first to help develop and implement testing for infectious diseases, and we are frequently the single major contributor to clinical trials that improve blood safety. The Red Cross cannot do this work alone. The generous support of volunteer blood donors is essential. We also rely on the nearly 60,000 organizations that sponsor 200,000 blood drives each year. Together, we provide the nation with a strong and robust blood supply.
