By placing a small, dark silhouette within the larger, glowing frame of a second squirrel, I created a dramatic sense of proportion and depth. The warm, radial gradient draws the eye toward the center, emphasizing the physical contrast between the two figures and suggesting a theme of growth or inner reflection. This use of scale transforms a simple animal profile into a powerful visual metaphor for the layers of a character's journey .
I used a mirrored composition to explore the relationship between subject and space. By anchoring the two stylized squirrelsatthebottomoftheframe,Iusedabottom-heavy arrangement to create a sense of grounding and stability. The fluid, continuous lines of the "figure" define the squirrels’ playful silhouettes,while the vast, monochromatic "ground" above emphasizes a sense of opennessandpotential.
This direction design utilizes a rhythmic, diagonal arrangement of acorns to create a clear sense of visual momentum. By tapering the icons from large, detailed forms in the upper right to a single small point in the lower left, I established a linear path that guides the viewer's eye across the composition. The contrast of the bright yellow elements against the deep blue gradient adds a sense of energy, suggesting a falling motion or a trail left behind by Scurry Squirrel .
This space design utilizes a wide diagonal composition to create a sense of vastness and verticality. By placing the flying squirrel in the upper-left corner and the detailed tree in the lower-right, I have used negative space to emphasize the distance of the squirrel's glide. The warm, earthy gradient background provides a soft atmosphere that connects the two subjects, illustrating the relationship between the forest canopy and the open sky
Designing the Scurry Squirrel project was an exercise in translating the frantic, energetic essence of a squirrel into a cohesive visual language. My process centered on using fundamental design principles—like scale, space, and direction—to build a narrative that felt both modern and grounded in nature. Along the way, I navigated the challenge of balancing minimalist iconography with rich, atmospheric gradients to establish a mood that shifted from the warmth of the forest floor to the vastness of the open sky. I discovered that by using visual contrasts, such as nesting a dark silhouette within a glowing form to represent growth, I could add a layer of metaphorical depth that goes beyond simple illustration. Setting up the spreads taught me the importance of visual pacing; I carefully arranged elements like the diagonal "acorn trail" to guide the viewer’s eye and mimic the physical momentum of a squirrel in motion. This journey through composition and structure ultimately revealed my strength in creating a unified "brand" for a character, proving that the true richness of a project emerges from the intentional relationship between every line, color, and empty space.
