“I like the variety of terrain we have here. We have something for everyone,” he said. Backyard encounters with wildlife are common during the winter months, experts say, as animals travel greater distances in search of food. Local animal control officers offered some advice on encountering wildlife during the winter. “Let them pass through,

Keith Hayden, Public Works director, said the bridge will be shut down for two weeks in the spring of 2021. That approach speeds construction and avoids alternating one-way traffic on the bridge for several months.
“There are several good detour routes,” Hayden said. “I think it’s a lot less intrusive both for the neighbors and for the traveling public.”

Police are investigating after a suspect set a Hart Street resident’s pickup truck on fire early Sunday morning.
Next door neighbor Bill Hanson said he woke up around the time of the incident and saw the fire. “I was shocked when I looked out and saw the fire,” he said.
Jake Yankus, the resident of 325 Hart St., said Monday that he couldn’t talk about the investigation because he was meeting with police later in the day. Yankus said he is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. “I’m just disgusted by it and afraid for the safety of my family,” he said.

Nico Dema’s cooking career started by chance during a one-year mandatory stint in the Yugoslav National Army in his home country of Macedonia. “They put me in a kitchen one time and I liked it,” he said. Dema has worked at or owned restaurants in Southington for decades.

Dear reader, what’s your story? By Olivia L. Lawrence The Citizen
A new year is like a blank sheet of paper (or to be upto-date, a blank doc1.docx) ready to be filled with all sorts of creative ideas and musings and even solid plans. It’s a time to collect our goals and desires and shape these into something meaningful and, if all goes well, something achievable. This year, especially – 2020 – seems to beg for clarity. It might even have its own theme song – “I can see clearly now.” (As in 20-20 vision, get it?)
In fact, there is a global initiative called VISION 2020 that calls for the elimination of avoidable blindness worldwide. Working with the World Health Organization, the 2020 group is putting its resources into screenings and treatments for the visually impaired. They’ve got a lot of innovative approaches and are worth checking out, if you’re looking for a good cause.
For many of us, it seems like only yesterday we were staring down 2000 and now not one, but two decades have flown by. Hard to believe there’s now an entire generation on the verge of adulthood who grew up entirely in the third millennium.
Parents play big part in skiing success
We’re getting deep into this millennium so maybe we can stop saying the cumbersome “two-thousand and nineteen” and just cut to the chase – it’s 20-20 or 20-21 or even just 20!
For every ski racer, whether a new U-8 rounding their first gate or a World Cup champion on the podium, there has been a support system behind the scenes. Parents.
We know that’s not a reference to 1920.
Mom and Dad buy equipment, pay entry fees, coach, keep gates, drive across town or cross country and wipe countless runny noses.
Anyway, back to that blank page, which is where this is being written – obviously by the time you see it this will no longer be a blank page, but a column. See Lawrence, A6

racing family. That’s the backdrop to racing – but racing is an individual sport. Once in the starting gate they are alone, it is them against the mountain. All of that care and feeding and driving and training is behind them, there is just mountain and racer. I once had a coach who said, “It’s you and the mountain, but remember a god made the mountain.” There will be some days when parents will wonder if one more early morning drive to a ski area is worth it. The answer to that is, yes. As a racer, in the 1950s, when my non-skiing parents trucked me to events in Vermont and New Hampshire, I was given a lifetime sport.

Gail, the younger, works at Breckinridge, Colorado and is on snow almost every day. (For a while she went to the Dark Side and became a snowboarder.) Beth coaches at Killington, Vermont. For every racer parent there will be highs and lows. You will see them win medals and crash off course. There will be twisted knees, broken legs and teeth knocked

He’s offering 20 gourmet pizzas in addition to classic Italian fare. The mashed potato pizza has become a favorite, Nico Dema said, along with the Village Pizza — sausage, pepperoni, peppers, onions and mushrooms. Hayden said the bridge’s substructure was rated poor in 1990 and it has been expanded at least once. Concrete is spalling, there’s exposed rebar and the river has undermined it. The bridge is “long overdue” for replacement, according to Hayden.

“There’ll be prep work beforehand and finishing up work, grading, afterwards,” he said. Construction won’t start until the town receives permits from a host of agencies, including the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Hayden said the town also needs construction easements to do the work. Rabid fox incident A Southington man whose property is adjacent to Hubbard Park in Meriden was bitten earlier this month by a rabid fox. The daytime encounter started when he noticed the fox near a flock of turkeys on his property and tried to scare it away. Rabies progresses slowly, Karabin said, adding it may take four to eight weeks for an animal to show severe symptoms, like aggression toward humans. During the early periods of the disease, the animal may actually appear docile.
