Fallen firefighter Wirtz honored
WWII veteran celebrates his 103rd birthday

A former North Haven resident and World War II veteran celebrated his 103rd birthday surrounded by family, friends and other well-wishers at his home in Woodbridge.
Former North Haven Police Commissioner Howard Rohloff celebrated his 103rd birthday in March. He poses with his son, Robert Rohloff.
Howard Rohloff, who lived in North Haven for more than 60 years, turned 103 on March 20. He now resides at a senior living community called Coachman Square.
After graduating from college with a degree in electrical engineering, Rohloff served his country in both the Army and the Air Force during WWII. Upon his return from the war, he

The 144 fallen firefighters – 79 of whom died in 2022 and 65 in previous years – were memorialized by having their names added to a bronze plaque that was unveiled during the ceremony, and which will become a permanent part of the federal park. Wirtz, 46, died in the line of duty on Dec. 26, 2022. He was a 22-year veteran of the North Haven Fire Department.
