American Embroidery gets Milestone Award By Robert Mayer Special to The Citizen

When Lisa Mariano was running a daycare out of her basement, she found it allconsuming. She had no time to go to doctor’s appointments or to the grocery store or, most importantly, time for her family. Her husband Enzo was a UPS driver and used to deliver packages to homes that had embroidery shops in their basements and he urged his wife to give that a try. She bought a small machine at first and then a four-head machine and a larger machine as she got more work. That was 20 years ago.

Dodds offers tips and advice for would-be writers By Robert Mayer Special to The Citizen

sharing tips with attendees on how to start stories, novels and memoirs.

For beginning writers, the old cliché is “write what you know.”

She billed it as, “Have an idea for a story, novel, or memoir but don’t know where to begin? In this workshop, we’ll examine introductions from published stories and use these as inspiration for your own opening lines, and create rough outlines for the remainder of your story.”

Dodds is a writer and teacher in North Branford. She holds an MFA in fiction from Southern Connecticut State University, and is currently

working on her first novel. Dodds is a two-time Fund for Teachers fellow (2016 and 2023), a 2022 National Endowment for the Humanities summer teacher scholar, and was a runner up in the 2018 NEATE (New England Association of Teachers of English) Teacher-Poet of the Year contest. See Dodds, A12

Chelsea Dodds agrees. A former Berlin High School student turned English teacher and writer, Dodds spoke to a robust crowd on Oct. 2 at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library,

“I didn’t really know what to expect,” she said. “I have done workshops before with 12 people and other ones with just a few people but this was nice to have so many people and have them be really engaged.”
