TURNPIKE CRASH
Berlin teen, ‘a friend to many,’ killed By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
Community members are mourning the loss of Berlin High School student Chase Anderson, a 15-year-old known for his "special spark." Anderson was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Saturday, Aug. 20. The incident occurred at about 3:06 a.m. near the Mobile gas station at 2005 Berlin Turnpike. The Midstate Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating. "We are devastated by the loss of Chase and heartbroken for his family and friends. He was a friend to many with a special spark and a great sense of humor," Berlin High School Principal Eileen Eustis stated. Counseling support has been available at BHS throughout the week. "Chase was really looking forward to the start of the school year," Eustis said, "so we are going to do our best to honor him by embodying his energetic spirit as we welcome back and support staff and students this week." Anderson recently became a member of the Berlin Police Department's Cadet program, which allows young people to learn about law enforcement. "Although the Berlin Police Cadet Program only recently began, Cadet Anderson was a consistent member with a positive attitude and immense enthusiasm," Chief of Police Matthew J. McNally stated. "The entire Berlin Police Department and Police Cadet program convey our deepest sympathy to both his family and friends, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of this young cadet whose bright future was cut tragically short." Anyone who witnessed the Aug. 20 accident is asked to contact Detective Brett Kelly at 860-828-7080.

New fenced-in, leash-free area is open Press Release
The fenced-in area at Pistol Creek, as designated by the Town Council on July 26 as a leash-free area for dogs, is now open. The area is approximately 50,000 square feet, in the middle of the fairway, right in front of the handicap parking lot off Spruce Brook Road.
Please note the rules of the area as posted at the entrance to the fenced-in area. Since the leash ordinance was put in place, our Animal Control officers have been patrolling areas in town speaking to many residents, educating them on the new leash ordinance.
All dogs must be on a leash in all other public spaces in town. Animal Control officers will be issuing Written Warnings to individuals who do not have their dogs on leashes on public property. This includes the meadow area of Bicentennial Park. Records will be kept of written warnings issued.
