• YOU ASK, WE ANSWER. This article comes courtesy of one of our avid readers who asked “How can you make the most of a small backyard?” A great question for duplex owners. Spring is upon us. Soon our gardens will be flourishing with lush greenery and beautiful colors, and the winter jackets can be tucked away. Spending more time outdoors is crucial for our health and wellness, and what better place than your own backyard. Owning a duplex means, in most cases, owning half the land, and therefore maximizing your smaller yard space is crucial. Key placements and the right pieces of furniture can make your yard go from feeling cramped and cluttered to an open, sun-drenched haven and the go-to barbeque spot this summer.

• MINIMIZE FURNITURE

We all love a nice large sectional but, the truth is not all outdoor space can handle it. Most wicker made outdoor furniture you see these days is bulky and takes up loads of space. While modern looking, it doesn’t suit every patio. Instead of a large sectional, try a love seat and two chairs. Another option is benches without backs or slim profile chairs (google Acapulco chairs). These can give a much different appearance and will blend into the out look when no one is sitting in them.

• POT GARDENING If grass space is important, digging up soil and adding trees, shrubs, and/or flowers can take up precious outdoor square footage. Try opting for a nice set of mixed sized pots. You can plant herbs, flowers, plants, and even trees. Mixing colors and species can make for a stunning visual outlook. The best part, you can move them around, giving a different vibe or look based on the season or your own creative ideas and making a stunning (minimal) oasis.

• AIR SPACE Allow room for the sun to shine. The sun is important for our daily dose of vitamin D, and your plants and flowers need it to survive (thank you grade 3). Try not to overcrowd your air space. We’ve seen some small yards filled with large awnings, covered in vines which can make the yard feel a lot smaller than it is and taking away lots of potential sunlight. While a great place for having a glass of wine, not ideal for maximizing your backyard space. Using well placed and sized umbrellas or smaller scaled awnings can provide ample shade space while not impeding the yard. Maybe you’re thinking of selling your home this spring instead of rearranging your garden? Taking the time to tidy up the yard and strategically place a few furniture pieces and plants can help the overall sale of the property and vibe that buyers get while touring through your home. Don’t go overboard spending here. Generally speaking, you won’t get your money back from what you spend on landscaping, which we will talk about another time when we give you tips on where to spend your money in a renovation to get the biggest return on your investment.
