QIAGEN GPS AND RRC CENTER
Architecture, Inc. provided architectural and interior design for a 13,275 sf interior lab, office, and warehouse fit-out within an existing building. The facility houses QIAGEN’s Global Product Support (GPS) training center and Regional Repair Center (RRC). Combined, the suite comprises a reception area, open and private offices, conference and huddle rooms, pantry, multiple training labs, a training classroom, multiple specialized repair workshops, and a warehouse.
The RRC provides equipment repair and calibration services. A dedicated decontamination room allows technicians to clean incoming equipment to remove any existing trace materials. The GPS program utilizes conference areas and training laboratories where customers receive instruction on proper use of equipment manufactured by QIAGEN.

SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Our firm has been working with the Southern Research Institute since 1989. Services provided include the design and documents for the original laboratory space of this contract research organization, which began as a toxicology vivarium facility but morphed into a CDC certified BSL-3 virology research laboratory with 24,000 sf of research space, plus 20,000 sf for principal investigators and tech support.
Multiple projects have been completed for the organization over the years including upgrades to the existing vivarium; a central plant addition; SIV research fit-outs; BSL-3 automated virology research lab; BSL2 vivarium spaces for specific DOD contracts; and CDC upgrade. Our firm also provided design services for upgrades to the facility as part of a grant application. The design (pictured) featured a new addition with glass canopy, interior alterations, and mechanical equipment upgrades.

FAIRFAX COUNTY HEALTH LAB
The project consisted of the renovation of a 14,000 sf, single story, former elementary school into the county testing and evaluation laboratory for public health. The program included accessioning, PCR suite, clinical chemistry, water/bacteriology, general chemistry, heavy metal testing, milk/media preparation space, bacteriology, rabies and necropsy, and a BSL-3 evaluation suite including pass-thru shower.
Support functions include administrative offices and conference room, secure storage for chain-of-custody evidence, glasswash and sterile processing area, and general storage. The project earned LEED Gold certification.

QIAGEN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT 04
Architecture, Inc. provided architectural and interior design services for an 18,000 sf LEED Gold interior fit-out, designed intently for the future expansion of an additional 15,000+ sf in adjacent unfinished space within the existing building. The facility includes a Product Development (R&D) Lab spanning 8,200 sf, equipped with several lab benches to accommodate up to 42 researchers.
Adjacent to the main lab area are nine support spaces designed for various research and analysis functions. The open office area features numerous huddle and conference rooms, with hexagonal accent lighting inspired by molecular science-oriented research. Maximizing natural light was a key focus throughout the design in the main lab and open office areas to enhance the working environment for all QIAGEN staff members.
The existing facility updates include relocation to existing BSL-1 and BSL-2 labs, addition of new BSL-2 labs, new freezer farms, lab storage, open and enclosed offices, conference rooms, and packing and shipping warehouse area.
