Introduction

The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) is pleased to present the results of its 2025 alternative academic program survey. The purpose of this survey is to gain a better understanding of the educational opportunities available to students beyond the membership’s 34 main campuses. This report includes information on off-site and satellite campuses, dual enrollment, transfer articulation agreements, online programs, and more collected from an electronic survey. This report shows that many TICUA member institutions offer academic programs that are alternatives to traditional classroom instruction. By providing further opportunities for students to participate in higher education, TICUA member institutions are improving access for thousands of students. These alternative educational opportunities exhibit the many ways that private colleges serve Tennessee. The pages that follow provide an overview of campus activity current as of the Summer 2025 reporting period for the twenty-seven institutions who submitted the survey. Readers desiring more information about a particular program should contact either TICUA or the individual campus directly. This study reflects the information available at the time the study was completed in 2025. We hope that this report is helpful to you. We strive to make sure that the information contained in this publication is as accurate and current as possible. It should be noted that the type of programs reviewed in this report can be added or removed at any time depending on student demand or institutional priority. Adult Degree Completion Programs Thirteen TICUA member institutions offer programs designed specifically to accommodate adult learners – generally older students (25 years of age and older). These programs typically lead to a baccalaureate degree and enroll adults re-entering college with a significant number of transfer credit hours. These programs cater to returning and adult students’ schedules and offer classes on a flexible schedule - often nights or weekends. The length of the programs varies from one to two years and depends on the number of previously earned credits. Students in these programs are eligible for financial aid from state, federal, and institutional sources. Some institutions offer additional student aid geared exclusively to adult students and/or offer the programs at costs lower than traditional degree programs.

Accelerated Baccalaureate Degree Programs An Accelerated Baccalaureate Program is an official program of the institution that offers students in selected programs the opportunity to complete the degree in less than 4 years by careful planning and the utilization of summer sessions or transfer credits. It does not include students who graduate before 4 years on their own accord. Credit for Prior Learning Experiences Many TICUA member institutions offer credit to students for their prior learning and experiences. Procedures to award credit vary from campus to campus according to the total prior hours for which credit will be awarded, academic discipline (e.g., physical education, criminal justice), and program type (e.g., adult completion programs, studio classes). Application procedures also vary in terms of cost and types of supporting materials submitted for review (certifications, personal essays or other written applications, portfolios or other evidence of prior experience, military discharge papers, or by “credit by examination”).

Dual Enrollment Dual Enrollment is the enrollment of a high school student in college courses for which the student is awarded both high school and college credit. High school students take college courses at the high school, at the college campus or through a college’s online offerings. Dual enrollment courses are taught by postsecondary faculty or credentialed adjunct faculty. Course offerings vary by campus and partnering high school and range from a select number of courses to all general education courses.

Dual Credit Courses Dual credit is an early postsecondary opportunity where college credit is awarded to high school students for classes taken at the high school. Classes are taught by high school teachers. To receive college credit, students must pass an online challenge exam. A dual credit course may be local dual credit, where a local postsecondary institution aligns an examination with a local high school course, or a dual credit course may be one of several Tennessee statewide dual credit courses. Statewide dual credit courses are designed and approved by the Consortium for Cooperative Innovative Education, and students passing the online challenge exam will receive credit at any Tennessee public postsecondary institution. Some TICUA institutions will also award credit to students who have passed a Tennessee statewide dual credit challenge exam. The following institutions provide local dual credit opportunities. Dual Admission Dual Admission is a program through which a student is admitted at the same time to a community college and a 4-year institution. The student will begin his or her studies at the community college and then transfer without any loss of credit to the 4-year institution. Students earn both an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree. Students who are dually admitted have all (or most) of the rights and privileges of students at each institution – library access, academic advising, and often access to student activities and athletics facilities.

Off-Site Courses/Programs and Satellite Campuses TICUA member institutions offer courses and programs at 41 off-site or satellite locations beyond their main sites. These off-site locations are spread across the state of Tennessee, country, and world. The off-site facilities present students with alternatives to study in a variety of programs and earn an array of degrees in education, business, nursing, ministry, and many others. Some institutions offer selected courses at these locations, while others offer full programs leading to a degree or certificate.

Online Learning Consortium E-Learning Program Level Definitions Blended Program: A significant percentage, but not all the credits required for program completion are offered fully online. Online Program: All credits required to complete the program are offered as fully online courses.

Transfer Articulation Twenty-two TICUA institutions participate in the Tennessee Transfer Pathway program. These pathways allow a student to complete an Associate’s degree at one of the State’s community colleges and then transfer to a public or private 4-year institution without loss of credit or time toward a Bachelor’s degree. In addition, institutions have their own agreements in place with both institutions in Tennessee and beyond the State’s borders. These agreements ensure that students can easily transfer from one institution to another. (A blank entry indicates that the institution did not respond to that survey item.)

Reverse Transfer Articulation Several TICUA member institutions participate in the State’s Reverse Transfer program. TICUA member institutions also work directly with community college partners to develop institutional agreements. This collaboration allows community college students to complete work for an Associate's Degree at the TICUA member institution and be awarded a degree from the community college (reverse articulation agreements). The student transfers to the 4-year degree granting institution before completing the course work for the community college Associate’s degree. At the 4-year institution, the student works with advisors from both the community college and the 4-year institution to ensure that the course the student takes will satisfy the remaining requirements for the Associate’s degree. Credits from these courses are transferred back to the community college allowing the community college to award an Associate’s degree to the student.

Dual Degree Programs Dual Degree Programs are formal programs through which students complete 2 different degrees (i.e., not a double major), either simultaneously or sequentially. This can be done at one institution or at multiple institutions. Generally, students earn either a bachelor's degree and a graduate degree or two graduate degrees. For instance, a student may take three years at the undergraduate institution, then matriculate at another institution to complete the requirements for the undergraduate degree and the graduate degree of the second institution. A student may also be admitted to and enrolled in two graduate programs (e.g., JD and MBA) at the same institution. Learning and Disability Services: King University is committed to enabling students with documented disabilities to participate in university programs by providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations for them. The Office of Learning & Disability Services works with students, students’ families/supporters, and students’ healthcare providers to determine eligibility for accommodations and to determine appropriate accommodations and coordinates with faculty and other university staff and offices to ensure access to university programs and services for students with disabilities. Student Success: Built on the framework of the Appreciative Inquiry Model, King University assigns a Student Success Specialist to all students. 30

Additional Academic Support Services The Office of Academic Support helps Lincoln Memorial University students academically by offering academic advising, tutoring, group study sessions, review sessions, workshops and programs (such as the Cornerstone or Student Support Services Programs) that specifically target students who might benefit from some extra academic and social assistance. The Office of Academic Support also coordinates the Student Welfare Alert system to assist Railsplitters throughout the academic year. This is an intervention tool for students referred by faculty or staff for grade-related and attendance issues. LMU also helps coordinate the academic programs of warning and probation to help facilitate academic recovery for students who have struggled. Maryville College has a conditional admit program that is based on test/placement scores. Students admitted to this program enroll in a course where they practice study skills and other behaviors that promote academic success. Maryville also offers peer tutoring to any students that need it regardless of placements. Lastly, Maryville enrolls students on probation who are in danger of suspension in a program that supports them in their efforts to improve their GPA and long-term outcomes including regular meetings with a success coach, peer tutoring, and study skills classes. Milligan University offers tutoring services to students. At Rhodes College, academic support is available for learning and time management assistance. There is a wide variety of academic support resources including academic peer coaches, an ADHD coach, peer tutors, the Writing Center, and the Language Center. The Student Counseling Center provides student support across the continuum of wellness from psychological symptoms that impair functioning to robust and resilient well-being. Student Accessibility Services (SAS) views disability as an integral part of diversity at Rhodes College. Through collaboration, we ensure students with disabilities experience access and inclusion in their educational programs through accommodations or other modifications. Southern College of Optometry offers academic support services to students that include tutoring and academic counseling. Tennessee Wesleyan University offers an ESL Course and Tutoring Services. Union University’s Keystone Program, which involves intensive academic coaching and a two-hour course, is required of students conditionally admitted to the institution, with a small number of spots available to fully admitted students. Welch College offers academic counseling, extended time for tests, note-taking services, oral testing, priority seating, proofreading services, readers, tutors, untimed tests.

Experiential Education allows students to expand their knowledge through extended research or study or to put their classroom education to work in real world settings. Experiential Education Definitions An apprenticeship program is "a structured 'earn and learn' model that pairs on-the-job learning with related technical classroom instruction." (Registered Apprenticeship College Consortium) A Capstone Project is “a multifaceted assignment that serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience for students, typically during their final year .... While similar in some ways to a college thesis, capstone projects may take a wide variety of forms, but most are long-term investigative projects that culminate in a final product, presentation, or performance.“ (The Glossary of Education Reform, www.edglossary.org) Community Service Activities are volunteer activities that students participate in that have been organized by the institution and are separate from service or volunteer hours that students perform as part of a class or as a disciplinary sanction. Cooperative education (or Co-Op) provides students with multiple periods of work in which the work is related to the student’s major or career goal. The typical program plan is for a student to alternate terms of full-time classroom study with terms of full-time, discipline-related employment. Since program participation involves multiple work terms, the typical participant will work three or four work terms, thus gaining a year or more of career-related work experience before graduation. An Externship or Job Shadowing Experience allows a student to spend between a day and several weeks observing a professional on the job. Such experiences are unpaid. Externships and job shadowing experiences are generally not done for academic credit. Internships are work or service experiences related to a student's major or career goal. The internship plan generally involves a student working in a professional setting under the supervision and monitoring of practicing professionals. Internships can be paid or unpaid and the student may or may not receive academic credit for performing the internship. A practicum is generally a one-time work or service experience done by a student as a class assignment or other part of an academic class. Some practicums offer pay, but many don’t. Almost all is done for academic credit. A Senior Thesis is a substantial written document that involves original research and synthesis of major theories in the subject area. (e.g. Senior Dissertation, honors projects, independent research project) Service Learning Classes "incorporate community work into the curriculum, giving students real-world learning experiences that enhance their academic learning while providing a tangible benefit for the community." (Campus Compact) Undergraduate Research Projects are significant and original research done outside of required course work and are usually done with faculty supervision.

Professional and Continuing Education TICUA member institutions continue to demonstrate their commitment to professional and continuing education through a diverse array of programs that support lifelong learning and workforce advancement. These initiatives include non-degree offerings such as industry-recognized certifications, micro-credentials, and customized employee training programs developed in partnership with businesses and professional organizations. Responding to evolving labor market needs, TICUA institutions provide flexible, skills-based learning opportunities that equip individuals with new skills and keep them engaged with evolving industry practices. Belmont University offers a variety of certificates through Belmont Online. The Institute for Leadership Development (ILD) at Christian Brothers University supports business leaders and organizations through innovative academic programs, one-on-one assessments, and coaching programs. ILD uses proven, research-supported techniques learned through academic-business partnerships. Cumberland University partners with Metro Davidson County’s Law Enforcement Academy. Lane College demonstrates a strong commitment to workforce development through a variety of strategic partnerships and certification programs. In collaboration with CVS, the college offers the Pharmacy Technician Career Pathways and Retail Management Certification Program, equipping students with in-demand skills for the healthcare and retail sectors. Lane also provides certifications in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology, expanding opportunities in the life sciences. Through the HBCU C2 initiative, Lane partners with Tennessee State University and Apple to foster coding and creativity on campus, offering Apple certifications to students and community members. Additionally, a partnership with IBM enables students to earn IBM digital badges, enhancing their technological competencies. Lane further supports financial literacy and community service by offering Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) in partnership with Cadence Bank. Lincoln Memorial University provides several continuing education opportunities through various partners. Collaborating with The McKenzie Institute USA, LMU provides courses in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), including Parts A, B, and Advanced Extremities. In partnership with the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and the Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association (TNOTA), LMU hosts a Fieldwork Educators Certificate Program and a Physical Agents Certification Course. A collaboration with Lindsey Vestal supports a specialized Pelvic Health Lab, while the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) enables LMU to offer the Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program: Level 1. Additional offerings include a Pediatric Orthotics course with Surestep, a functional anatomy course for managing shoulder pain (free to Covenant Health employees), and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Association Exam Prep course. Through ASPIRE, LMU provides certifications in Cervical and Lumbar Spine therapy. Furthermore, LMU’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, in conjunction with the Institute of Advanced Physical Therapy Education (IAPTE), delivers a hands-on Manipulation Workshop titled A Weekend of Retrospect and Refinement. 37

Maryville College partners with College Board’s Advanced Placement Program to offer an Advanced Placement Summer Institute, a weeklong course that trains educators in Advanced Placement instruction. Maryville College’s Digital Edge Program helps students build digital skills and earn micro-credentials through accelerated training. A partnership with Coursera, funded by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) Digital Skills, Education and Workforce Development (DSEW) grant, the initiative is led by the MC Career Center to support career readiness and regional workforce development. Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia (MTSA) offers a diverse range of continuing education and professional development opportunities for healthcare providers. These include Cadaveric Regional Anesthesia Workshops, Point of Care Ultrasound Workshops, and TEE/TTE workshops. MTSA also supports nurse educators through a Nurse Educator Micro Credential, webinars, and conferences tailored for anesthesia educators. Additional offerings include a Foundations for Anesthesia Business course. Moore Tech partners with the Greater Memphis Auto Dealers Association to deliver a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, providing hands-on training and workforce-ready skills in the automotive industry. Union University partners with the TN Department of Labor & Workforce Development’s Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program as a training provider.

Other Academic Innovations – Current Initiatives Competency-based coursework for key emerging partners (e.g., TrailLife USA) 1.) Service learning component is required of every undergraduate major. 2.) Eight-week term course delivery for all online programs. Some programs are delivered in eight-week term courses. Flipped classrooms are used across campus. 3. The College of Pharmacy is partnering with Meharry Medical College to provide opportunities for collaborative interprofessional experiences with Union pharmacy students and Meharry medical students. 4. Supplemental Instruction is offered for courses that tend to have higher D and F rates. 5. The Master of Athletic Training program participates in disaster simulations each year. Community first responders including the fire department, ambulance service, local physical therapists and athletic trainers, physicians, nurses, and AirEvac helicopter personnel participate.

Academic Innovations - Under Consideration The Division of Natural and Physical Sciences promotes academic innovation through active-learning pedagogy, flipped-classrooms, course-based undergraduate research experiences across the curriculum, student summer research experiences, internships, and professional development for faculty and students.
