A MESSAGE FROM As I reflect back on the 2019-20 academic year, I view it in two distinct time periods: before March 2020 and after. Prior to March, our year was much like any other, if not better. Enrollment was solid and our student engagement was strong. We experienced an increase in housing numbers, our student leadership program was running on all cylinders, and our new students were still talking about the positive experience they had at their off-campus fall retreat. The spring semester began in that same vein until things changed dramatically over spring break. With the coronavirus pandemic becoming an increased concern, we extended break and asked our faculty to prepare for the possibility of teaching online. Within weeks, we had made the decision to operate remotely for the rest of the semester. Even as everything changed on campus, one constant was the continued support of our alumni and friends. You contacted us to find out what we needed. You continued to make financial contributions to the annual fund, scholarships, and special projects. One example of your generosity was the success of our Day of Giving event. In just 24 hours, we raised more than $43,000 from 264 donors — a record for this annual event. Proceeds support scholarships for our deserving students — more important than ever during these difficult economic times. As you review this annual report, you will see that we continue to make significant progress across the institution. We finished the year

in a strong position, despite the numerous challenges that COVID-19 presented. In fact, we were able to take advantage of a relatively empty campus and complete the final construction project funded by the Rock Solid and Ready Campaign: the addition to and renovation of the Seaver Center. We opened the building on time and on budget — the $3.5M project created a stunning result. Though we could not host a ribbon-cutting event due to social distancing restrictions, the building is getting plenty of use. Teaching and learning is occurring in the four new classrooms located where the weight and fitness equipment used to be and the new, modern workout space is in constant use by our University community. Your support of Rockford University is deeply appreciated by me, by our faculty and staff, and by our students. We are grateful that you recognize the value of what we offer students, who go out into the world and do great things as productive alumni. I take heart in the fact that Rockford University has, over the past 173 years, proven itself resilient in the face of a wide variety of threats, challenges, and opportunities. We have faced world wars, recessions and depressions, and yes, even global pandemics. Through it all, we have stayed the course, offering a Rock Solid education. Thank you for your support!

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS For decades, Rockford University and the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois have worked together toward the shared goal of improving the lives of students and families throughout the greater Rockford community. This longstanding partnership is a result of a shared belief that access to education is essential to the success of economically diverse and culturally vibrant communities. The Foundation continues to invest in a variety of partnerships on campus:

In 2015, Rockford University joined the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois’ Rubin Education Challenge, a challenge grant designed to build endowed scholarships for students attending college within the region. This collaborative partnership resulted in the establishment of a new endowed fund to support student scholarships at Rockford University.

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is home to the Barber-Colman Management Fund, originally established in 1987 through a $1 million gift, currently valued at nearly $1.8 million. As this endowment continues to grow, it will provide a perpetual source of financial support for deserving students on campus.

Combining $150,000 with a $50,000 matching grant from the Foundation’s Carroll Starr Endowment, Rockford University was able to dedicate $200,000 to its student opportunity fund in support of experiential learning opportunities for students in a variety of majors and fields of study.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP ROCKFORD PROMISE Rockford Promise provides a partnership between Rockford University and Rock Valley College to offer tuition support for area students. In 2016, the program made its inaugural awards in support of two scholarships for students working toward a bachelor’s degree, and three scholarships for students working toward an associate’s degree. The non-profit scholarship program is designed to enhance the economic development of the Rockford community by offering full-tuition scholarships to deserving graduates of Rockford Public Schools in District 205, in addition to economic incentives for residents and businesses to locate in the region. Studies show local communities thrive when residents have access to quality educational programming. Modeled after similar Promise programs throughout the country, Rockford Promise also supports scholars with mentorship and networking opportunities, academic advising, and a variety of other opportunities to help them build the foundation for a successful career. Since 2016, Rockford Promise has received more than $220,000 in new investments, enabling the program to support a growing number of students and successful, home-grown professionals right here in the Rockford community!

A COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO RESTORE OUR SOUND

Earlier this year, Rockford University hosted its “Hello? Is This Thing On?” gala event in support of the Restore Our Sound Campaign to modernize the sound system technologies within the Clark Arts Center’s Maddox and Cheek Theatres. We are proud to share that the Rockford community of alumni and friends helped us raise more than $67,000 at the gala event, nearly half of our $150,000 fundraising goal. As we continue to fundraise in support of the project, we are confident that we will meet or exceed our goal in early 2021. The incredible amount of progress that we continue to make is a testament to the positive change that can be affected when dedicated donors like you come together toward a common cause.

A NEW GENERATION OF DONORS GAVE The gift made by a first-time donor is perhaps the most important gift he or she will ever make. Individuals who choose to invest in the lives and success of others at an early age often go on to demonstrate a lifelong passion for philanthropy and charitable giving. Recent accounting alumnus Mickey Zeng takes pride in the opportunity to give back to his alma mater. “I am so proud to have been able to earn a degree from a university right here in my hometown,” says Zeng. “I’m fortunate to have been able to work with RU faculty and advisors to formulate a career path that enabled me to remain in Rockford after graduation. Being from Rockford, I genuinely believe that we live in a community that cares about our neighbors and improving the lives of others.” “My parents are business owners in Rockford, managing a restaurant through the Covid pandemic,” Mickey shared. “It means so much to belong to a community like Rockford where we work to take care of each other as students, residents, neighbors, business owners and more. I am thankful to have received an amazing education from RU, enabling me to help my parents’ business grow and reinvest in a community that I believe in through a gift to Rockford University.” 12

Every year for more than 35 years, Paulette has given back and invested in the future of our students; a priority stressed by her parents, “Giving to others was a value instilled in my siblings and me from a very early age. Our parents taught us to give service to our community and monetary support to efforts in which we believe. Supporting Rockford University, where I received my undergraduate degree, is just one way that I have chosen to pay it forward to future generations. Supporting student scholarships through my giving at both my former high school and at Rockford University is all about investing in the future of our nation.” “I received a scholarship my freshman year, which is one connection to philanthropy. Someone gave and enabled my scholarship. Philanthropy ensured we had access to a good liberal arts education, along with extracurricular activities that were all part of my college experience. Rockford University provides a unique learning environment that enables diverse students from so many walks of life to participate in the college experience and leave college with the desire and the ability to be engaged and caring citizens. Rockford University prepares students to participate as leaders in their chosen professions. Helping students who need monetary support to be able to afford an education is the least we can all do.” 13

YOU TRANSFORMED THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE The Seaver Physical Education Center has long served as the home for our kinesiology and exercise science programs, as well as athletic training facilities for students — transforming hearts, bodies and minds. In 2020, the University completed a $3.5 million renovation to transform this critical facility, adding a 3,800 square-foot fitness and weight center, four new classrooms, a new lobby and concessions area, upgraded HVAC systems, and much more.

Rockford University Trustee Joel Moore and his wife, Brooke, made the decision to invest in the Seaver Physical Education Center because they understood the far-reaching impact of their support. “All students - not just student athletes - have opportunities to utilize and enjoy these improvements,” Moore points out. “Physical fitness training and education is a field that can positively impact the lives of students not just during their time on campus, but also for the remainder of their lives as they develop healthy habits." “There is a pride among our student body in seeing the new construction, training space and equipment,” Moore continues. “The renovation and expansion of these facilities helps our university to remain competitive with our peers.” 14

YOU IMPACTED GENERATIONS The establishment of an endowed fund at Rockford University allows donors to leave a living legacy of support, impacting the lives of students, their families and the communities in which they live for generations to come. The annual distributions can make the difference in a student’s ability to earn a degree, forever altering the trajectory of their personal and professional lives.

DR. CARLTON & MRS. EILEEN KNIGHT II The Maxine Burritt Knight and Carlton W. Knight Endowed Scholarship was established in 2005 through an estate gift. Supporting academically-accomplished, community-minded young women entering their first year of college, the fund gives preference to individuals who plan to become school teachers after graduation. Carlton & Maxine’s son and daughter-in-law, Kip and Eileen, have chosen to honor her memory through their own gifts to the fund. “Mom was incredibly proud of her Rockford education and experience,” says Kip. “It was so meaningful for her to know that her investment would ensure that tomorrow’s students would have access to the same exceptional experience that she had. How could one not be moved to support such a worthwhile cause?” Beliza Nava, class of 2024 - A Rockford resident and graduate from Guilford High School with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5, she now has her sights set on a new challenge – a biochemistry major at Rockford University. Beliza is thrilled to be the 2020 recipient of the Maxine Burritt Knight and Carlton W. Knight Endowed Scholarship. “I’m just so excited to be able to start this next chapter of my educational career,” says Beliza. “It feels good to know that there is financial support for students like me to experience all that Rockford University has to offer.” 15

TOM SEVERSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN BUSINESS

Established in December of 2019 from the proceeds of the Severson Charitable Remainder Unitrust and in partnership with the Severson Family, an endowed scholarship for Rockford University has been created to support Rockford University students pursuing degrees in Business. Mr. Severson and his late wife, Alice, spent 58 years in Rockford. Tom worked at Barber-Colman Company for 40 years and retired in 1988 as Vice President of the Machine & Tools Division.

The Mary Ashby Cheek Society of Rockford University was established to recognize and honor donors who provide for the future of the University through long-range planned gifts. This special society was named after Dr. Cheek, who was among the first to actively encourage alumni and friends of Rockford University to plan gifts that would continue to benefit the University beyond the giver’s lifetime. Membership includes donors who remember Rockford University in their wills, in their insurance policies or in such life income plans as charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts. Legacy gifts are important to the University and provide a bright future for the students who continue to pursue their dream of graduation.

A self-described small-town kid, Tim Anderson ’87 couldn’t imagine himself anywhere other than Rockford University. “Rockford was like a home away from home, where I was able to develop meaningful relationships with fellow students and faculty alike,” said Tim. “My undergraduate experience was incredibly authentic, with accessible faculty and a wealth of opportunities to pursue my extracurricular interests in areas like music and theater. I simply cannot imagine receiving a similar experience at a large university.” Tim views his monthly gift as a way to pay it forward to a new generation of students. “It was the generosity of others, through scholarships and financial aid, that made college affordable for me,” he points out. “I feel a calling to return the favor to students today so that they can have the very best experiences possible. I feel good about the decision to give monthly because it provides a reliable source of support and allows me to make a difference on a consistent basis – not just when it might occur to me.” 19

Although we were not able to call during the spring semester, that didn’t stop alumni from committing more than $16,000 in support of our students. In addition to this incredible support, you helped our student callers gain invaluable skills they can carry throughout the rest of their academic career and as they transition into the professional world.

A first-generation college student, Sara Hall understands the pressures and uncertainty that come with the transition to college life. “I was lost during those first years,” Sara admits. “Rockford University was instrumental in helping me get involved on campus and throughout the community. They put me in a position to become the person I wanted to be, and that is a tremendous gift.” Sara, along with a record-setting 263 other donors, was proud to be counted among those who participated in the Annual Day of Giving. “The scholarship support I received at Rockford allowed me to fuel my personal and professional passions, making me the person I am today,” said Sara. “What a wonderful opportunity to be able to give back to the university that was so instrumental in that process for me.” 21

YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION

Born in Cedarville, Illinois, Jane Addams was the eighth of nine children born to a prosperous miller and political leader who served for 16 years as a state senator and as an officer in the Civil War. An 1881 graduate of the Rockford Female Seminary, which would later become Rockford College and now Rockford University, Ms. Addams devoted her life to social reform, civic responsibility and humanitarian issues of the day. She died in 1935, four years after receiving a Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 for her life’s work. Her legacy lives on today through those drawn to her inspirational work and dedicating themselves to make a positive impact on the world around them. The Jane Addams Society was established to recognize the philanthropic leadership of these individuals today who contribute $1,000 or more annually to the University and represent a crucial source of support to the lives of Rockford students and community members alike.

In the face of challenges they rise above to grow even stronger.

We were thrilled to see more than 150 alumni join us for Reunion last fall, and to engage with more than 125 alumni during alumni events hosted on-campus and throughout the country prior to the pandemic.

This was especially true as our Class of 2020 navigated the final months of spring semester to continue toward their goal of graduation. We could not be more proud of the hard work they put in and the sacrifices made to achieve this reality during a pandemic. It was a special honor to welcome each member of the Class of 2020 into our alumni family during our first-ever virtual commencement, and we can’t wait to see how these future leaders change the world. Thank you for all the ways you supported them along the way and for joining us in welcoming them to the alumni family.

The pandemic didn’t stop us from connecting and supporting each other. Nearly 200 alumni joined us from around the world for 30 virtual events between April and June. It was inspiring to see so many alumni sharing stories and memories with one another, and we look forward to providing many more opportunities to stay connected. It features our most accomplished alumna, Jane Addams, who graduated from Rockford Female Seminary in 1881. The giving levels represent her progression in life, from her time here to the crowning moment of her life as Nobel Laureate in 1931. It is our hope that as we feature Jane Addams and her relevance to our work, people will aspire to be identified with her through their philanthropy to the university.
