A Message from Dean Lei As the fall semester comes to a close, I wish you a very happy holiday season! The semester featured a variety of impressive events and conferences hosted by RBS: • The Second Annual Alumni Awards Dinner • Bi-annual Innovations in Undergraduate and Graduate Business Education Conference • 10th Anniversary Celebration of 100 Rock (RBS-New Brunswick Building) • 58th World Continuous Auditing and Reporting Symposium • Center for Women in Business Conference, Women in Hybrid and Remote Work • 33rd Annual Conference on Financial Economics and Accounting • Marketing Department’s Annual Summit, Your Future in Marketing • Center for Real Estate Scholarship Dinner
None of these events could have happened without the help of RBS Staff members. Thank you all for your continued hard work and dedication. I hope you enjoy the winter break and I wish you a very happy new year.
Newsletter Committee Updates As we wind down the year 2023 we want to thank you for being on this journey together. For me, the end of one year and the beginning of the next gives me such hope that the stuff that isn’t working can be replaced with something that does. That change is coming and that is exciting. But then I think, why wait for the yea to end? I can wake up each and every day hoping for a brighter future and a day that was better than the one before. Change, hope, peace, they all come from within. Wouldn’t it be great to spread that to one another daily, not just around the holiday or the beginning of a new year? Inside RBS is seeking guest contributors to share their department news & events, and family milestones with us. Q. What department do you work for? A. Business School / MSIS Department Q. What’s the day-to-day of your role like? A. Assisting faculty with anything they might need like expense reports, ordering books, scheduling meeting rooms and ordering supplies. Q. What is your favorite food? A. My favorite food will definitely be Mexican food, it is my guilty pleasure. Q. What book are you currently reading? A. Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin & Atomic Habits by James Clear. Q. What are some of your hobbies? A. One of my favorite hobbies is going on camping trips and just being surrounded by nature. Q. What’s the most unique part about working here? A. I was really amazed by all the employee events/meetings Rutgers has for their faculty and staff, it’s refreshing to know that your employer wants to recognize those who go above and beyond. Q. What is your goal for 2024? A. One of my most important goals is to gain more experience and knowledge in my position to be able to grow within Rutgers.

Q. What department do you work for? A. I work for the Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access. Q. What’s the day-to-day of your role like? A. My daily work intertwines with the IDEA Office goal, which is to establish Rutgers Business School as a national leader and model for preparing students for success in a diverse world, while building a more diverse community at RBS. We do this through the coordination of IDEA Office programs and events that foster community for RBS students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds. Q. What is your favorite food? A. My absolute favorite food is mac & cheese (and anything with bacon). If you’re looking to give me a special treat popcorn is my favorite snack! :-) Q. What book are you currently reading? A. I am currently reading “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz Q. What are some of your hobbies? A. I love cooking and dancing! All things performing arts brings me JOY! Q. What’s the most unique part about working here? A. I absolutely love the staff I work with at RBS. As a new employee at RBS, I felt so welcome thanks to the support and care of my coworkers. Their commitment to their jobs and their own success was evident as they invested in me to ensure my success as well! Thank you! Q. What is your goal for 2024? A. My professional goal for 2024 is to create and sustain programming for the RBS IDEA Office that will increase/ enhance culture, connection and community between RBS students, faculty and staff.

Did You Know? Safety Message from Rutgers Police
University Public Safety is committed to working in partnership with students, faculty, and staff to provide a safe, enjoyable, and fulfilling university experience. At Rutgers, campus safety is a shared responsibility that is contingent upon everyone recognizing that we all have roles to play in achieving our shared vision for the Rutgers community.
You can take an active approach in your personal preparedness by viewing the University’s Emergency Action Plans and observing noted precautions we have outlined on our website. Please also review our Active Shooter Resources for resources and guidelines that are intended to reduce your personal risk in the event of an active shooter situation. Virtual active shooter training is currently under development and will soon be made available to the university community. RUPD officers are trained and equipped to respond to a myriad of emergency service calls inclusive of active shooter. Rutgers initiated installation of upgraded locking mechanisms in some classrooms and the project remains ongoing. Newly installed locks are intended to enhance classroom security in an emergency. In the event of an emergency, the security thumb-turn on the inside of the classroom door can be rotated to render the outside of the door locked. Step-by-step instructions on the operation of these thumb latch locks and an instructional video can be found on our Identity and Access Management Classroom Locking Mechanisms website. University Public Safety has been working in partnership with OIT – Telecommunications to upgrade the emergency phone infrastructure throughout the Rutgers University Community. This ongoing project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2023. Emergency blue light phone installations are already completed on the Rutgers-Camden, Rutgers-Newark, and RBHS-Newark campuses, with Rutgers-New Brunswick set to be completed before the completion of this semester.
During emergencies, accurate information is important. To receive up-to-date text alerts, please be sure to register or update your emergency notification information by visiting http://ens.rutgers.edu. All university students, faculty, staff, and guests who are subscribed to the emergency notification system are also encouraged to download Rave Guardian, a free mobile safety app designed to keep you connected to the Rutgers University Police Department and enable you to access important campus safety resources. Additional information and FAQs are outlined on our Text to RUPD website. The RUPD also supports the “Concerned? Do Something!” initiative and reminds you to report behaviors that concern you. The primary purpose of sharing a concern is to help prevent personal, emotional, psychological, academic, and substance abuse issues from getting worse, especially when someone is perceived to be a danger to themselves or others. We encourage you to review this vital information and become a central component of our operations. Accomplishments Dean Lei Receives Distinguished Achievement Award from UW-Madison College of Engineering On November 9, 2023, our very own, Dean Lei was honored with the 2023 Distinguished Achievement Award by the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison! Graduating with a Ph.D., in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Dean Lei went on to start her career at Rutgers and has dedicated an impressive 34 years to Rutgers Business School since graduating from UW-Madison. This award not only acknowledges her significant impact in her field of research, but also highlights her outstanding contributions to RBS. LinkedIn inaugural report on the Top MBA Programs 2023 More good news arrived this week! On November 14, 2023, LinkedIn released their inaugural report on the “Top MBA Programs 2023: The 50 best U.S. business schools to grow your career,” where Rutgers Full-Time MBA was ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten, No. 11 among the U.S. public business schools and No. 35 overall in the nation.
Financial Times 2023 EMBA Ranking
On October 16, 2023 Financial Times released their 2023 Global EMBA Rankings of the Top 100 Business Schools in the world and the Rutgers EMBA program was ranked No. 14 for U.S.-only schools (stand-alone programs not affiliated with other schools), No. 3 among the Big Ten and No. 59 worldwide! Rutgers EMBA moved up 14 places in the world rankings, and up one spot in the U.S. compared to last year.

Rutgers University Policy Library has been upgraded to accommodate the institution’s evolving needs for a modern and intuitive website where faculty, staff, students, and administrators can search for university policies at Policies.rutgers.edu. The library, which is managed by University Ethics and Compliance, will continue to be the official source for university policies that govern academic, administrative, financial, operational, and business affairs. A few notable changes to highlight: • • • •
All policies are displayed in HTML format to improve web accessibility and readability, particularly for individuals who utilize screen readers. Policies also can be downloaded as PDF files. An improved search function allows people to filter policies using keywords and attributes other than the policy’s section number only. Appendices, exhibits, and annexes will be policy attachments to make them more visible and accessible. Embedded links in the previously posted PDF versions of university policies will be automatically re-routed to the new policy library homepage. Similarly, links from university websites to previously posted PDF versions of university policies will be automatically re-routed the user to the policy library homepage. If you manage a university website and need to link directly to a specific policy, you will need to access that policy’s page in the new policy library and update your link accordingly. The hierarchical structure, naming, and nomenclature of the policies have not changed. You can continue to view and navigate policies by section and policy number.

Care.com provides regular, short-term and ongoing care to eligible Rutgers employees to aid with your children, older loved ones, pets, home, and more. There is also a discounts program, powered by LifeMart, which will allow employees to save on their holiday travel and gift needs. Finance-Pro In accordance with the university’s holiday closing schedule, University Procurement Services (UPS) will be closed Monday, December 25, 2023, through Monday, January 1, 2024, including the Procurement Help Desk and System Support. During this time, purchasing requisitions via Punchout and Quick Orders will still be issued; however, any requisitions requiring UPS review and approval such as Goods and Service orders will not be processed until after the break. Invoices, Check Requests, Non-PO Uploads and Expense reports may be submitted, but they will not be processed until after the break. Please understand that pricing in the new year (2024) may be subject to change based on annual pricing adjustments.
Accounts Payable’s last payment run of CY23 will be December 21, 2023, which will include payments on approved invoices up to and including the due date of January 5, 2024. FACILITIES Parking Info Daily Permits: Starting July 1, 2023, employees who do not need an annual permit will be allowed to purchase up to 10 daily parking sessions via the Passport app (www.passportparking.com). The daily passes can be purchased one at a time.
100 Rock Building Updates
We are excited to share recent enhancements to safety measures at 100 ROCK. • • • • •
The rear entrances to the North and South Towers at 100 Rockefeller Road will be locked. Faculty and Staff IDs are programmed with swipe access to these entry points when locked. In order to bolster security efforts, we have hired an additional Community Service Officer (CSO) to assist the current security officer. Their responsibilities include monitoring security cameras, patrolling RBS spaces, and assisting guests visiting our building. The South Tower will be closed when room 1144 is not in use for classes. Faculty and Staff IDs are programmed with swipe access to these entry points when locked. Security Officers (and CSOs) will now request all faculty, staff, and students to show their Rutgers University Identification Card (RUID) upon entering the building. Due to potential changes in Security Officers’ assignments, it is essential for everyone to have their RUID for a smooth and efficient entry experience. Effective immediately, all guests are required to present a state or federal ID when entering the premises. Guests should visit the security desk in the North Tower. Departments are kindly requested to inform RBS-Facilities to coordinate with Security Officers. Please remind guests in advance to bring valid identification and to check in/out at the reception desk.
As we approach the close of the semester and the final exam period, we want to emphasize that if any faculty, staff, or student is experiencing increased anxiety, we encourage you to take advantage of the university services available.

Marc Limata recently spoke at the NACADA National Conference on Advising. His presentation, titled “Student Success and Persistence: Advising Strategies,” covered three fundamental approaches: Collaborative Advising: Emphasizing the interdependence of advising, teaching, and support services. Proactive Advising: Identifying and addressing challenges early to boost student persistence. Motivational Interviewing (MI): Fostering student motivation for positive change. The session was well-received, with an average of 260 advisors and student services leaders nationwide in attendance.

On Monday October 23rd, 2023, Rutgers Business School Dean Lei Lei welcomed an enthusiastic group of professionals from higher education to The Rutgers Club to celebrate the 6th Annual Innovations in Undergraduate & Graduate Education Conference. Several well-respected business school leaders from around the country, and a few international guests, gathered to exchange innovative ideas, such as developing new curriculum, fostering diversity and inclusion, the impact of technology on teaching and learning, and the corporate perspective on developing future business leaders.
Following an outstanding performance by the Rutgers University Glee Club, John Byrne, Editor and Chief of Poets & Quants, joined the opening session of the conference to discuss the current state of graduate business education. Mr. Byrne’s informative and entertaining discussion covered such important topics as the new emphasis on sustainability in courses and curricula, how schools are adjusting to the Supreme Court’s decision on affirmative action, the upside to specialty master’s degrees in business, and the smart way to play the rankings game. This was followed by two days of expert panel discussions on a variety of relevant topics ending with a wonderful excursion into New York City to see the hit Broadway musical, Hamilton. The IUGBE Conference 2023 was a great success! Marketing Summit
On November 17th, our Marketing Department organized and hosted a successful and high-impact Marketing Summit on Your Future in Marketing. Main topics covered were consumer trends, purpose-driven and content marketing, omnichannel retailing, marketing analytics and AI/machine learning. Given that the landscape of marketing has been fundamentally shifted by technology, we must embrace the changes, adopt new digital platforms and enhance customer personalization, and use the power of technology to drive innovations for marketing.
Throughout the day, 15 marketing industry executives and 4 RBS Marketing faculty members (Kristina Durante, Yla Eason, Phil Cohn, and Madhavi Chakrabarty) shared their strategic view of these new frontiers in marketing to a packed house of 150+ conference participants who attended both in person and by Zoom. The participants also enjoyed quality informal networking time in 100Rock and highly appreciated the learning opportunity for handling new challenges at their workplaces. Quick Skillet-Roasted Chicken with Spring Vegetables
Tender vegetables simmer in a mixture of chicken drippings and butter in this simple, speedy dish. Servings: 4
Ingredients:
4 (10-ounce) skin-on airline chicken breasts 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided, plus more to taste 3/4 teaspoon black pepper, divided 1 tablespoon olive oil 6 small carrots, sliced diagonally into 1-inch pieces (about 1 1/2 cups) 8 ounces fresh oyster mushrooms, halved 6 small hakurei turnips or radishes, trimmed and quartered (about 1 cup) 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces, divided 6 rosemary and thyme sprigs, divided 2 spring onions, or 4 scallions, cut into 2-inch pieces (about 1 cup) 1/4 cup (2 ounces) rosé wine 1/2 cup unsalted chicken stock 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Directions:
Preheat oven to 425°F. Sprinkle chicken evenly with 1 1/4 teaspoons salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Heat oil in a 12-inch ovenproof skillet over medium. Cook chicken, skin side down, until skin is golden brown and crispy, 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Reserve drippings in skillet.
Increase heat to high. Add carrots, mushrooms, turnips, 1 tablespoon butter, 3 herb sprigs, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon pepper; stir to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, until browned, about 6 minutes. Add onions and chicken, skin side up. Transfer skillet to preheated oven. Roast until a thermometer inserted in thickest portion of chicken registers 160°F, 18 to 20 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, divide chicken and vegetables among 4 plates; reserve drippings in skillet.
Return skillet to heat over high. Add rosé and remaining 3 herb sprigs; cook, undisturbed, 2 minutes. Add stock, and bring to a simmer over high. Simmer until reduced by one-third, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in parsley and remaining 2 tablespoons butter; season to taste with salt. Pour sauce over chicken and vegetables.
