Staff Spotlights Karen Walters Program Coordinator Department: Management & Global Business Years of Service: About 14 years in total. I started at Rutgers as a student worker when I turned 18 in December 2000. In 2002, I began working at RBS in the Graduate Student Services office and continued to work in different RBS departments (MACCY Tax, PhD and Professional Accounting Programs; Center for Research in Regulated Industries; NJSBDC). As of 2018, the Management and Global Business Department is where I call home. Job Duties: My main job duties include scheduling and staffing all classes that are offered by the Management and Global Business Department, assisting the Chair and Vice Chair in various projects and providing MGB faculty members administrative support. What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this? Marketing for a non-profit animal organization What are the three words that best describe you? Loyal, Dedicated, Personable If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? First, I would buy all my close family members their own homes and pay off all their debts. Next, I would buy a huge farm house with acres of property and build a huge animal sanctuary for unwanted and senior dogs.

Associate Director Department: Dean’s Office, Research and Grants Administration Years of Service: Eight (8) years at RBS Job Duties: I oversee the pre- and post-award RBS Grants and Research Administration Office from submission to reconciliation. Duties include proposal and budget development submission via the University internal systems and upon award, account management of the grant project. I also coordinate the RUTCOR Publications Office and Dean’s Office Journal offices, which entails job classification development, recruitment, and funding to support the operations. What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this? Entertainment Triple Threat: Act, Sing and Dance What are three words that describe you and why? Diligent, Conscientious and Kind What are your hobbies outside of work? Piano, clarinet, watercolor painting, and gardening What you do you want others to know about you? Enjoy Classic Flim, Rock-n-Roll, Jazz and Blues, Museums and Art History, and Halloween Costumes! I enjoy buying and selling antiques and vintage clothing, participating in charity fashion shows sponsored by local dealer Somewhere in Time, plus teaching Sunday School and evening statistics classes. If your life story was made into a book or a movie, what would the title be (and why)? Without Laughter There is No Love - because humor has been my best coping strategy when faced with setbacks. Do you have a favorite quote or words of advice to share with RBS coworkers? Persistence pays off. When they tell you no, keep telling yourself yes.

Program Spotlight: Masters in Financial Analysis The Master of Financial Analysis degree is a 33 credit program that can be taken on a full or part-time basis. This is a lock step program for full-timers, meaning students will take the same set of academic classes. Full-time students will take five courses in the Fall and five courses in the Spring. Part-time students have up to 4 years to complete the program and must take the same set of classes in their first and second semester. After that, they are free to take the remaining classes at their own pace, within the maximum time frame. Students must complete an Accounting for Managers course before the first semester. Spam/Scam/Phishing Attempts to CellPhones Going into the Holidays and break, we all look forward to some expected relief. However the Spams, Scams, and Phishing attempts are relentless and offer no relief at all. The most recent scam going around is very similar to what used to be in emails scams only… Remember when an email appears to come from someone you know, asking for help…perhaps asking you to pick up $300 in gift cards and mail them to a specific address becuase they were in a meeting? Well, now similar scams are being pushed to cell phones as a text message appearing to be from someone you may know (but going to a different number). These could come from your contact list, Facebook, Google/Gmail etc. It is truly dangerous when all of these apps have connected contacts and share content. If something seems odd then take a minute and double check it. Make the phone call, or send a separate email to the concerned party. Never follow the links or reply until you are certain. Stay vigilant, be mindful, be careful, be alert.

Tech Tip: Adding A Calculator to A Word Document Word has a built-in calculator that can help you solve equations right in your document. First, add it to the Word menu by navigating to File > Options > Quick Access Toolbar and selecting All Commands from the drop-down menu. Locate Calculate, and click Add to move it to the Quick Access Toolbar column. Click OK to return to your document.
You will notice that a small gray circle has been added to the top of your Word document. Now you can type math equations, and if you highlight them, that icon will change color. Press the icon and Word will calculate the answer.

Professional Development & Committee Updates
Mini-MBA Concludes December marks the end of the Fall 2021 Mini-MBA Professional Development Program, Team Management Essentials, which was offered to RBS staff this fall. The ten module course was coordinated through the Professional Development Committee and RBS Executive Education, with the support of Dean Lei, to promote lifelong learning and encourage staff members to enhance their leadership skills. Topics taught by several outstanding RBS professors included Strategic Thinking and Planning, Performance Management, Communication, Cross-Functional Teams, Conflict Resolutions, and much more. Through a thoughtful collection of contemporary literature, interesting lectures, innovative case studies and stimulating break out room discussions, 26 RBS participants were challenged to develop supervisory skills and learn how to effectively manage and motivate team members. Learners pursuing the Mini-MBA certificate completed all ten modules, weekly insight worksheets, short quizzes, weekly evaluations, a development roadmap,and a professional development plan, in addition to passing the final exam, which is currently still open to Team Management Essentials participants.

Diligent , Loyal, Reliable I am always the first person my friends call because they know I am always there for them. I make sure to take care of the people in my life. I put the same effort into making sure my work is done correctly, I am always available to help. What are your hobbies outside of work? I spend time with my Family and play soccer. Event News RBS Virtual Staff Retreat 2021 Forced again by COVID, the Fall 2021 RBS Mini-Staff Retreat was a virtual affair. But that didn’t stop RBS employees from gathering remotely and celebrating the accomplishments of colleagues, playing a few games, and winning prizes. On Friday, November 12th, over 80 Staff members joined a lively Zoom meeting, hosted by Sr. Associate Dean for Finance & Administration, Melissa Rivera. Following Dean Rivera’s welcoming remarks, Dean Lei thanked staff for their resilience and resourcefulness during a most challenging year. HR Manager, Dee White, announced the 2021 RBS Staff Awards. For a full list of recipients, please see pages 9-10 in this issue. The staff retreat finished up with a few fun rounds of Bingo. Who knew Bingo was such a competitive game? It was all for fun, though, lead by expert Bingo caller, Dan La Fuente, whose enthusiasm was contagious. Congratulations to the winners who received gift cards from RBS. Thank you to all who organized and participated in the RBS Mini-Staff Retreat.

RBS 2021 Holiday Gathering On Wednesday, December 15th, RBS faculty and staff decked the halls of Nanina’s In the Park for an elaborate luncheon, lively music, and some much needed holiday socializing with colleagues. The festive decorations throughout the property surely put everyone in the holiday spirit, with beautiful trees, wreaths, and flowers adorning every room. From the lavish display of appetizers and delicious passed hors d’oeuvres, to a hearty hot lunch and an elaborate dessert buffet, the food was absolutely wonderful. The DJ provided great entertainment, but most others were content to simply enjoy the pleasant surroundings, catch up with coworkers, and relax, away from the hustle and bustle of a very busy semester at Rutgers Business School. Although Dean Lei had another pressing obligation and was not able to stay and enjoy the party, she wished everyone well and treated guests to the highly anticipated, annual holiday bread from the popular bakery, Hudson Bread. In addition, faculty and staff received the latest in RBS swag; a cool, new R Business baseball cap, as donned by Gino Gentile below. The party may have been too much for coworkers who appeared to fall asleep on the bus ride back to the New Brunswick campus. Thank you to Dean Lei and everyone who helped organize a lovely celebration. Happy holidays!

RBS Staff Newsletter Staff Shared Recipes Aunt Bette’s Brownies Shared by Marla Shachtman, Program Coordinator, Marketing Department “These are your typical, chocolatey, chewy, gooey brownies. Nothing fancy or trendy; just a good old-fashioned brownie.” - Marla Ingredients: • • • • • • • •
4 ounces unsweetened chocolate ¾ Cup butter 2 Cups white sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 Cup flour ¼ tsp salt 1 cup chopped nuts and/or chocolate chips, if desired.
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Line a 9 x 13 inch baking pan with parchment or foil (allow overhang to pull brownies out of pan later). 3. Grease the lined pan with melted butter or oil spray. 4. Melt chocolate and butter over low heat until mixed. Do not let it burn. (If chocolate gets scorched, throw it away and start again. There is no saving it.) 5. Remove from heat and add in sugar, eggs and vanilla. Mix well. 6. Add in the flour and salt and stir until combined. 7. Add chopped nuts and/or chips, if using them. 8. Bake for 28 to 30 minutes. 9. Let cool completely before cutting. Pro tips: For thicker, chewier brownies, bake in an 8 or 9 inch square pan instead. Lower oven temperature to 300 degrees and bake for 35 to 40 minutes. If you double the recipe (always a good idea), use the 9 x 13 inch pan, set oven to 325, and bake longer; start checking at 45-50 minutes, but it might take up to an hour.
