President’s Welcome to Old Colfeians

A big welcome from all of us at Horsham Rugby club to the Old Colfeians who we last played 3 years ago before our promotion to level 5.

Colfeians boast a long and chequered history with beginnings going back to 1885. Formed from old boys at Colfe’s School, and ultimately transformed into a recognised club officially in 1928. They come from Lee in South East London. In the past the club has played as high as (what was at the time) National 3 and not long ago were in London 1.

The club runs multiple senior teams, veterans, and an extensive girls and junior program, reflecting its community focus and inclusive ethos.

Overall, Old Colfeians RFC has grown from a school alumni team into a vibrant, community focused club, balancing competitive achievements with a strong tradition of sportsmanship, touring, and development of youth rugby.

Our 1’s have had a run of successful encounters in recent times as we have beaten Brighton (league leaders at the time, no less), Bromley, Dartfordians, Reigatians and a big win against Sutton & Epsom, a really big side, and a close one against Beckenham. Good to be counting wins but brought back to reality with a loss at Battersea and a 1 point loss to Canterbury II’s (41-40). Go figure….

Does this hold promise for promotion back to Level 5? Interesting thought, though we are 10 points behind the leaders (Sidcup and Brighton) so let’s see how the rest of the season goes.

Just a small mention of Walking Rugby as we look forward to the second year of a league contest for Sussex. Right now, we have a tidy side with a number of ladies who have recently joined us. We will be holding a Festival at the club on 20 February with approximately 5 Sussex sides coming to join us.

Tom Whittaker

As a quiet country boy, Tom found his feet in our small market town and quickly became a much-liked member of the club, which in his initial days was on account of his truly messy nights on the town, and subsequently as he became well known across various sections of the club.

This was most notably with the Baa Baas where he found work with Danny and the U16 Girls who he has coached over the last 6 months in support of Gareth. In addition of course the Men’s 1st team and Lions where he enters his last match as the runaway leading try scorer in the league with 23 to date.

A genuinely lovely lad, his loyalty and love for the game is a great example to all. His attacking skills are game changing and he has grown both on and off field whilst he had been with us. Always available to help, up for a lads night out and forming very close relationships with his teammates, he truly has been one of our most successful imports to date. Personally, having had him live with my family over this last year, I can say that my family will miss having him around hugely and know that in Tom we have a lifelong friend and in the case of my daughters an unexpected brother!

Safe travels Tom, keep in touch and know you will always be welcome here at Horsham and hopefully you will make good your threat to return!!
