President’s Welcome to Brighton RFC A big welcome to Brighton RFC please. It’s good to be playing local rivals again this season, both teams having dropped a league. Like us, they found level 5 something of a difficult beast. They have shown determination to go back there, however. Top of this league with 13 points between them and second place last time I looked. Quite a performance! We have had a few awkward games recently. After a great performance at Sutton and Epsom we had a narrow win against Beckenham and then two narrow defeats at Battersea and Canterbury 2’s. Since Sutton and Epsom we just haven’t quite hit our stride. I recall last time things were like this, Havant, level 5 champions already, came here and we beat them. Today will be a tough one, but then again a local derby always is! We played today’s guests early in the season but the game was abandoned due to a nasty injury and the necessity of an ambulance on the pitch. Brighton is one of the oldest clubs in the country, formed in 1868, 3 years ahead of the formation of the RFU. There is even conjecture that the club itself (before being a rugby club) was formed in 1791! Ancient indeed! Obviously one of the Founder clubs within the RFU. Current Harlequins outside-half Marcus Smith played junior rugby at Brighton. Also, ex-England head coach, Eddie Jones retained a strong affection for the town after his Japan side trained at Brighton College ahead of their fabulous World Cup victory over South Africa in 2015 at the Amex football stadium. Following this Jones held England training camps at the school. And to blow that trumpet again, we do Walking Rugby. 5,45pm on Monday evenings. We are still recruiting. The majority of the players are over 50, some well over but so long as you’re over 18 you’ll be very welcome. I hope you all have a great afternoon and that the game lives up to its usual excitement. Finally, we reported in the last edition of the passing of John Price. A true Horsham man. There is a tribute to him elsewhere in this programme.

John Price Last time we put a Programme out (Beckenham game) we added at the last moment before publication that very sadly John Price had passed away. At the time we wanted to inform us all of this and hence quickly put together a couple of sentences, more of news than remembrance due to the lack of time. We all have nice thoughts of John but so very few of us have vivid memories of his earlier years. We have some wonderful stories. Steve McCall was “sent off” the field to change his socks by skipper John who was unhappy with Steve’s chosen colour. Mind you, as the story pans out, Steve had worn these socks all season… Go figure. When I moved from the M&J’s to the seniors, John had already retired as president, but tales abound like the fact that he would, as chairman, mop the floors of the clubhouse before our opponents arrived. I was invited to a VP lunch then (in the days when invites were required…) and he announced me as a newcomer, which was very thoughtful. He started his address with “It gives me great pleasure” and finished there. We were all wondering…. He would inspect the grounds ahead of games, especially during inclement weather and if he was unhappy with their condition (wet, muddy, long grass etc.) he would cancel the games. No wonder Keith Russell’s Squires were so successful, Keith had his pick from the upper sides whose games were no longer on. With such anecdotes its no real wonder John picked up the title of “Mr. Horsham Rugby Club”. He was a real club man and spent so much of his time at the club. He would do anything to make things better, from cleaning windows to leading meetings to driving the tractor. His biggest contribution was working the issue of moving the club to its current location. If you think of what we have here, space, multiple pitches, clubhouse, etc. We have inherited something special. Of course we have improved incredibly in recent years, but all of that would not have been possible without that all-important move. Thank you John. Alan

John Price John was born on 12th October 1934 in Worthing to John Jonah and Hilda Irene Price. His father owned a successful grocery store in Lancing. At the age of 8 he went away to boarding school at Seaford College and then at 13 moved to Eastbourne College where he truly cemented his love of all sports. Here he played in the school Football, Rugby, Hockey, Boxing and Rowing teams to name but a few. John’s height or lack of it never held him back. In fact it came in useful. He was a very successful Cox at school. As many of you know he was very good at shouting and giving orders, a very useful attribute when coxing at Rowing. After school John had to sign on for National Service. He opted for The Royal Regiment of Artillery and was quickly identified as possible officer material. John passed officer training with flying colours and was posted to Accra in Ghana. He spent the next 2 years as 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. When John came back from National Service he started playing Rugby for Horsham and his love of rugby truly began playing at Horsham Cricket Club and in Horsham Park. At that time Horsham rugby club didn’t have a ground of their own. In 1961 Dad met Kay Robina Lindfield, also a very talented sportswoman, on the train to London and pursued her until she relented and went on a date, the rest as they say is history. They were married on 29th March 1963, on a Friday say the family so John could play Rugby on the Saturday! In 1964 they relocated to Manchester as he became District Sales Manager for Craigmiller before in 1968 they moved back to Horsham when John was promoted to Sales Operations Manager for Craigmiller and went to work in London. By this time they had four children namely Richard, Sarah, David (or Puff as he was better known) and Paul. It was when we returned to Horsham that Dad became fully involved in fundraising and finding a home for Horsham Rugby Club. With a lot of hard work from the members they raised enough money to buy the land from the Scrase Dickens Family and the Rugby Club was eventually built and officially opened in September 1972. In 1972 they moved to 53 Kings Road, Andrew (Package) was born and the Price family was complete. John and Robina lived there for 50 years. John moved to Unilever Head Office as a Personnel Manager until his retirement in 1989. He was not only involved in Horsham Rugby Club but also Roffey Robins Football Club and the Mini Minor Football League and Stoolball. John helped to set up Stoolball England, the governing body for Stoolball too. He touched so many people’s lives through his involvement with sport and will be sadly missed.
