President’s Welcome to Battersea Ironsides

A big welcome to Battersea Ironsides from us all at Horsham Rugby Club. Always an entertaining game when we play them and I think our historic record is pretty even. So this should be good! No, great!....

Known locally and recently as the home of Kyle Sinckler, no less, the Club was formed in 1943 by Col. E.H. St. Maur Toope, MM. from members of the Cadet Battalion, 42nd Royal Tank Regiment (RTR), located in the borough of Battersea. In 1948 the name was changed to Battersea Ironsides and the Club formally opened to other than RTR Cadets. The club colours originate from the RTR shoulder flash and motto “Through mud and blood to the green fields beyond”. The club helmet and crossed lances hark back to Cromwell’s parliamentarian troops, the Ironsides.

Battersea join us whilst we’re in a rather successful spell with only two defeats since mid December, including a win against league leaders (at the time) Brighton, and a narrow defeat to league leaders (at present) Sidcup. But Battersea are also riding high just a few points behind us. With the quirks of the weather (how much wetter can it get. Let’s hope for some more sunshine!!) we have been able to take advantage of the AGP. We know from previous seasons what a tough side Battersea are, and we expect no holding back today. A great match in store.

Walking Rugby

I am sure everybody knows by now (I do tend to go on a bit – my apologies) that there is a Horsham Walking Rugby Team. It has been running for 3 years allowing some older gentlemen from the club as well as some younger ladies to enjoy rugby once more before arthritis and other painful ailments of growing old set in. We train on Monday nights at 6pm every week throughout the year. Sussex Walking Rugby run a league, and individual teams organise Festivals throughout the year. We had a very successful one at Horsham only a few weeks ago.
