In an enclave as exclusive as Vaucluse, true luxury is rarely defined by grandiosity alone. At 112 New South Head Road, architect Jorge Hrdina has created a residence so special, it manages to meet “tripartite” human needs: functional, emotional and spiritual.
“Tripartite refers to the three core elements that comprise human nature: our physicality, our emotions and our soul”
While architecture must define and resolve functionality, Hrdina believes it also must create a space that fosters well-being and happiness, and beyond that, a house should serve as a sanctuary for the human spirit.
“I believe that great art and architecture must address all three,” Hrdina explained.
When designing 112 New South Head Road, Hrdina wanted people to feel a grounding sense of stability, created by an almost cave-like sanctuary, achieved by heavy walls made from off-form concrete and rammed earth. To counter the heaviness of the walls, the design relies on natural light filling the space, “simultaneously opening up to allow a fluid connection between the interior and exterior,” he said.

Born in Chile, and raised for several years in Milan, Hrdina draws inspiration from the interplay of handcrafted and machinemade material. He said this was demonstrated at 112 New South Head Road by using natural materials in a modern way to retain the tacticity of the handmade, represented by off-form concrete walls, custom handcrafted timber, and rammed earth. Paired with modern spatial design by maximising natural light and framing views, a seamless transition between outdoor and indoor is created.
Conscious of neuroaesthetics - the concept of a physical space’s impact on mental wellbeing - Hrdina incorporates material made to feel like being in nature. “It’s similar to going for a swim in the ocean or taking a walk in nature,” he said. “For me, it comes down to natural, nonsynthetic materials crafted by human hands; crushed sandstone and cement, timber, and polished concrete. These materials are timeless.” 112 New South Head Road, Vaucluse, is currently listed with TRG agents Cae Thomas and Gavin Rubinstein.
