PROSPECT:
PARADISE IN THE SUBURBS ISABELLE WALKER STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST
In Wilston, where substantial land holdings are exceptionally rare, Prospect stands as a landmark response to modern suburban living. Completed in 2024 by Shaun Lockyer Architects, the residence commands 50 metres of northeast frontage. The sheer scale allows for a private family compound complete with a tennis court, setting a distinct benchmark for inner-city Brisbane architecture.

Securing a site of this calibre within minutes of the urban core is almost unheard of.
From there, the courtyard continues vertically, with a skyhigh, private retreat.
"What is so rare about this particular project is that you've got over half an acre of land in the inner city, which is five residential blocks," architect Shaun Lockyer noted.
"You've got this lovely spiral staircase taking you onto the roof terrace which we’ve designed to really celebrate all of the city views," said Mr Lockyer.
Mr Lockyer explained that the expansive footprint provided the opportunity to execute a house "focused on family and creating the best sort of suburban paradise you could in the inner city."
Rather than relying purely on site volume, Mr Lockyer organised the land into intuitive sub-precincts, balancing broad family spaces with quiet retreats, offering functional autonomy for growing families.
“This courtyard, I think, is one you just don’t expect to be in a house,” Mr Lockyer said, of the first floor terraced courtyard looking over the tennis court. The design of the first floor kitchen and terrace provides a seamless flow, replete with lush hanging gardens, the likes of which you’d expect from the Hotel De Russi in Rome.
“On the lower level, there’s dedicated entertainment quarters that separate the kids and parents - which I think is a really great addition for adult kids especially,” Mr Lockyer said. Refined detailing supports the broader spatial arrangement. Within the main suite, custom skylights sculpt natural light into a central design feature of the room.
“Conical skylights are an element we love featuring in our projects, but I feel the ones we’ve installed in the master suite take the idea of making the light the hero of the room to the next level." Mr Lockyer said. Utilitarian needs are handled with equal sophistication. The basement accommodates up to ten vehicles, delivering a level of convenience seldom found in suburban Brisbane. Throughout the design, material selection and floorplan logic focus on longevity and comfort. As Mr Lockyer explained, the primary goals were "functionality, durability - to deliver an ease about the house. We wanted to focus on making the house as convenient and easy as possible, to be able to enjoy the most of the house all the time." Prospect represents a rare alignment of scale, location, and artisan architecture, delivering what Lockyer described as "a lifestyle opportunity that I don't know too many others could ever replicate."
