by Jan Works, Member, Prescott Vette Sette
Prescott’s annual Corvette invasion will bring more than 325 colorful and exotic specimens of America’s Sport Car to the city the last weekend of September. The All-Corvette Car Show put on by the Prescott Vette Sette car club is a popular event for Corvette enthusiasts throughout the country and is one of the largest all-Corvette shows west of the Mississippi.
The Corvettes start arriving on Wednesday and Thursday for activities including drive-outs through our scenic locations. They will assemble around Courthouse Square for the show on Saturday, Sept. 27. The public is welcome to stroll among the cars, ask questions, take pictures and admire each generation of the iconic sport car’s classic styling.
This year, a representative of the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, will be
a special guest at the show. Amy Hardin, the museum’s director of development, will help judge show entries, along with students and faculty of the automotive program at Yavapai College’s CTEC facility who volunteer every year to judge show entries. They will select the top winners in all eight classes of Corvettes manufactured since the first generation in 1953, C1 through C8.
Also on display will be custom fabrication systems by Cordes Performance Racing, one of Arizona’s premier motorsports shops, demonstrations of car care products by Adams Polishes and the latest Corvette models by local dealership Casa Chevrolet of Prescott, the marquee sponsor of the show.
Stephanie Savage of STEFnROCK, one of Prescott’s most popular entertainers, will sing the national anthem at the 9 a.m. opening ceremony, which also features a color-guard flag presentation
by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University ROTC cadets. The show will conclude at 2 p.m. with awards presentations.
This year’s show is the club’s 19th annual event and, by tradition, its major fundraiser in support of charitable giving to nonprofits in the Prescott community. The club established its own charitable foundation in 2016 to be the official sponsor of the car show; its bylaws specify that each year qualifying nonprofits are reviewed and selected following the car show.
In 2024, recipients were the Prescott chapter of U.S. Vets, the CTEC program at Yavapai College and Heritage Park Zoo & Animal Sanctuary.
Prescott Vette Sette appreciates the community partners and local sponsors who help put on the show every year.

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
PRESCOTT NOW: How long have you been playing together?
Pearl Ridge: We started as a five-piece band called Pearl Ridge about 15 years ago, and Kriss Heintz (guitar) and I wanted to perform more often, so we created the Pearl Ridge duo and have been going ever since!
PRESCOTT NOW: What’s the inspiration behind your band’s name?
Pearl Ridge: The full band was put together by a promoter gal that wanted to start a Janis Joplin/Melissa Etheridge tribute
band. Most of us had never performed together before, so we all met over dinner and had to decide on what to name us. Janis Joplin’s nickname was “Pearl” so that was easy, but then our keyboard player thought we should add “Ridge,” which was the second half of Melissa’s last name.
Therefore, “Pearl Ridge”!
PRESCOTT NOW: How do you connect with your audience?
Pearl Ridge: Our audience is the key ingredient to our shows! We
are there for them and want to make sure they are hearing the songs that stir up nice memories of the past but also move them emotionally. The breadth and depth of our song list has surprised some folks, and we love the reactions we get.
PRESCOTT NOW: How would you describe your sound?
Pearl Ridge: Even though we are just acoustic guitar and vocals, some people have said that our sound is so full. Kriss’ melodic guitar playing and Kirsten’s rich vocal tone blend beautifully
whether playing country, folk or rock.
PRESCOTT NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Pearl Ridge: I would say that performing for part of the
festivities for Super Bowl LVII in 2023 was a highlight! There were people from all over the country attending so it was exciting to have an expanded audience. Our stage location was in Old Town Scottsdale where hundreds of people were celebrating the event, and the vibe was off the hook!
PRESCOTT NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Pearl Ridge: Don’t waste so much time trying to become “rich and famous.” Decades later to be performing for people that come out to see you time and time again is the true reward.
PRESCOTT NOW: What motivates your band to perform?
Pearl Ridge: The love of the music and our fans! Music is a passion for us, and we feel it deeply. It’s a physical connection to the melody and lyrics. We are humbled when seeing familiar faces follow us from venue to venue. We strive to learn their favorite tunes!
PRESCOTT NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
Pearl Ridge: We saw how important the live music scene is in Prescott, and we wanted to be a part of that vibe! The community takes its music seriously and sees a tremendous amount of support.
Who wouldn’t want to immerse themselves in that?! It’s also a nice escape from the heat during the summers in the Phoenix metro area where we live.

Nestled in the heart of Prescott on Iron Springs Road, Unsui Japanese Restaurant offers an authentic slice of Japan with a refined touch. The restaurant features traditional sushi and Japanese dishes, complemented by an exceptional selection of highend Japanese spirits, like sake, whiskey and vodka. At the helm of Unsui is a classically trained sushi chef from Japan, Hori. With years of experience, he brings precision and artistry to the sushi bar, serving up an array of beautifully crafted sushi and sashimi. The dedication to quality ingredients and timehonored techniques ensures a dining experience both authentic and unforgettable.
One of the highlights of Unsui is its commitment to traditional Japanese recipes. These time-tested dishes are lovingly prepared, offering guests a true taste of Japan’s home cooked comfort food. The menu features a delightful range of options, but some dishes stand out for their popularity and flavor. Among these, the katsu curry — a crispy breaded pork or chicken cutlet served with a rich, savory curry sauce — is a favorite for its heartwarming, satisfying taste. Ramen lovers will also appreciate the deeply flavorful broths and tender noodles in their bowls of ramen, which have become a staple for many regulars.

by John Mason Glen, Ph.D. for the Western Heritage Foundation
It was a classic example of the “Thucydides Trap” where an emerging nation — Japan in this case — begins violence against an established nation — America.
The Pearl Harbor air raid was an immense tactical success, however the oil storage facility or the maintenance capabilities at the Oahu military base were not destroyed. Many of the ships and planes were rebuilt, serving in the war.
Much of the success of the air raid can be credited to Takeo Yoshikawa, the Japanese naval officer charged with espionage in Oahu. His rented apartment on a high hill offered a panoramic view of the assets and activities of the US Pacific Fleet.
Often posing as a tourist and escorting a friendly local geisha, he observed that the ships were often anchored close together, making them easy targets. Yoshikawa also informed his superiors the ships sortied Monday mornings and returned to anchor Friday afternoons, making the weekend a perfect attack time.
Fortunately for the U.S., the three aircraft carriers were at sea that morning, but all seven battleships were either damaged or destroyed, plus nearly 200 aircraft and there were 2,500 casualties. The American Congress declared war on Japan the next day.
The Japanese Consul corps, including Yoshikawa, were immediately rounded up; but what to do with them became a question. The U.S. still had diplomats in Japan, and if the Consul corps was treated harshly, the enemy might retaliate.
The Other Arizona connection Sixteen adults and five children of the Japanese Consular corps, including Yoshikawa, were moved from D.C. to the Triangle T guest ranch in Dragoon, Arizona (southeast of Tucson) in February 1942; they were interred for five months. They were treated with kindness, allowed to play tennis and other outdoor sports under the watchful eye of American machine guns positioned on the boulders surrounding the ranch.
In summer 1942, the internees were transported to New York and then to South Africa, where an exchange of diplomats occurred.
Certain he would be arrested as a spy, Yoshikawa hid out in the hinterland, posing as a Buddhist monk, finally opening a candy store in 1953. Anti-war sentiment in Japan was such that he was ostracized, his business failed and the government refused him a pension. He died in a nursing home in 1993 forgotten, broke and bitter.

In an evening of pride, remembrance and celebration, the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) and the Prescott Fire Department (PFD) welcomed 14 new firefighters — nine for CAFMA and five for PFD — during a graduation ceremony in June at the Yavapai College Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center.
The event marked the culmination of months of rigorous training. The ceremony opened with a presentation by the Honor Guard and the sounds of bagpipes, underscoring the strong traditions of the Fire Service.
Each recruit was pinned with their badge by a family member or close friend. Following the pinning, City of Prescott Mayor Phil Goode administered the oath of office to the five new Prescott Fire Department firefighters, while Interim Fire Chief John Feddema delivered the oath for CAFMA’s nine graduates.
A solemn and poignant moment came as fallen Recruit Dylan Wallace was honored with a moment of silence. His badge was presented to his father in a moving tribute, reminding all in attendance that his
legacy will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters.
CAFMA Recruit Raul Rocha was named the inaugural recipient of the Top Recruit Award, recognizing his exceptional performance, leadership and commitment throughout the academy.
Special recognition was also given to Robert Borker, Director of Fire Science with Yavapai College, whose dedication and support have been instrumental in building a strong partnership between agencies and supporting the success of each academy class.
CAFMA and PFD also would like to extend sincere gratitude to the dedicated training teams and Recruit Training Officers (RTOs) from both departments. Their leadership, professionalism and dedication to developing tomorrow’s firefighters were critical to the success of this academy. Their mentorship has laid a strong foundation for these new recruits as they begin serving their communities.
Both agencies extend their sincere appreciation to their professional staff members whose behind-the-scenes efforts supported the success of the
academy and brought the graduation ceremony to life. Their dedication, coordination and attention to detail ensured a meaningful and seamless experience for recruits and their families.
Congratulations to the graduates of Class 25-1:

Beyond the British Invasion
Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center
7 p.m. – Historic Theatre
Tribute show to the greatest British Bands of the ‘70s in this rockin’ follow up to the British Invasion show. Music history was changed forever once British bands like the Beatles first conquered the U.S. in 1964, but what followed the invasion was just as successful in maintaining England’s hold on the radios of America. New bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Queen hammered out the hard rock and heavy metal of the time while the original British Invasion groups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Who creatively evolved to heights never before seen in popular music.

Following overwhelming success with its immersive wine tours through the Verde Valley — featuring such stops as Alcantara Vineyards, Javelina Leap Vineyards, Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery, DA Ranch Estate Vineyard and Tumbleweed Winery — Winebelly and Beerbelly Tours has expanded its offerings to include a brand-new experience: the Drink In Prescott Tour.
Founded by Rebekah and Ross McClure in December 2023, Winebelly was born out of a love for Arizona’s vibrant wine culture and a passion for creating unforgettable experiences for wine and beer enthusiasts alike.
“We are thrilled to bring our wine and beer tours to beautiful Prescott,” says co-owner Rebekah McClure. “After so much positive feedback from our guests in the Verde Valley, it just made sense to expand to a place like Prescott, which has a growing and exciting local craft scene.”
The Drink In Prescott Tour is a carefully curated combination tour, showcasing the best of the city’s breweries, wineries and distilleries. Guests meet at Back Alley Wine Bar, nestled in the historic Whiskey Row back alley —a fitting start to the journey. Free parking is available nearby in the downtown parking garage, offering a hassle-free launch point for the experience.
The tour shuttle departs at 11 a.m., kicking off a flavorful day that includes:
• Lunch at State 48 BBQ — Enjoy a hearty barbecue sandwich, side and a fountain drink.
• Granite Mountain Distillery — Sip award-winning spirits and learn about small-batch distillation.
• Wren House Brewery — Discover locally crafted beers at the Prairie Patio at Wren House.
• A final stop at either Willow Tree Tapas and Wine Bar — for a refined, wine-centric experience — or Lazy G Brewhouse , known for its relaxed patio vibes and flavorful craft brews.
“Prescott has always had a unique charm, and its craft beverage community is no exception,” says Ross McClure, co-owner. “We’ve seen firsthand how much people love the blend of beer, wine and spirits on one tour. The combination format has been such a hit in the Verde Valley, we knew Prescott would be the perfect next stop.”
With safety as a top priority, Winebelly and Beerbelly Tours ensures guests can enjoy the full experience responsibly. The company’s clean, comfortable shuttle buses and knowledgeable guides make every trip memorable. Aug. 7 marked Yavapai College’s second annual degrees and dogs double feature: The Verde Campus Open House and the dog-friendly Wine & Wags fundraiser — both on YC’s Verde Valley Campus in Clarkdale.
YC’s Verde Valley Campus Open House offered a free tour of Yavapai College’s Northern Arizona Campus and an in-depth look at all the opportunities it holds.
The Verde Campus is home to more than 12 degree and 20 certificate programs, in vocations ranging from accounting to nursing to viticulture to the building trades. Attendees learned how first-time college students, working students, those looking for a new career or those seeking advancement in an existing one have all used Yavapai College as a springboard.
Wine & Wags, the college’s dog-friendly fundraiser for the Verde Valley Humane Society, brought together humans and canines to enjoy a glass of wine from YC’s Southwest Wine Center (humans only!) and offered a host of pet-friendly activities — like dog grooming, pet photography play area and puppy pools.
Attendees were urged to bring their dogs as a “plus one.” The Verde Valley Humane Society had a crew of adorable dogs to meet, pet and adopt.
Yavapai College operates seven campuses and centers throughout Yavapai County and offers more than 100 degrees and certificates, four baccalaureate degrees, student and community services and cultural events and activities. To learn more about YC, visit www.yc.edu
submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®
September is REALTOR® safety month. Working in such a publicfacing industry puts agents at a higher risk for potential harm, theft or scams. The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) offers a safety program with practical tips and strategies to help its members stay safe.
But how can you make safety a priority when buying or selling your home?
Meet with multiple REALTORS® to find the best fit when selling your home. Ask about their experience and communication style. The home buying and selling process is complex, so choose someone trustworthy with your best interest in mind.
Be your REALTORS® “safety partner” to protect your home and belongings. Have them verify that they checked and locked the home
after any showings, and double check all locks and scout for missing items once you return home. This will help ensure that nothing is missing and the home remains secure.
Not all agents or clients are who they say they are. You should never show your home alone. REALTOR® members with the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR) have access to Forewarn, a system that runs instant background checks with just a name or phone number. This helps protect them and you from potential harm or fraud. If someone reaches out directly about showing your home, refer them to your REALTOR® so proper safety steps can be taken.
In Arizona’s rural areas, cell service can be spotty. Always make sure you have a lifeline by telling someone where you are going, when you leave and when you
return. These properties may also be on nonmaintained roads or only accessible by high-clearance vehicles. While it’s tempting to ride together, it’s important for homebuyers to drive separately to a showing even if that means renting or borrowing a highclearance vehicle.
Homebuyers should avoid going to showings after dark to better stay alert and aware of their surroundings.
After purchasing your home, remember to break down all of the moving boxes and put them in garbage bags before throwing them out. A bunch of empty boxes out by the curb could trigger would-be thieves.
Working with a REALTOR® adds a layer of protection, experience and trust. Their knowledge and resources help keep you and your property safe throughout the buying or selling process.

Ernst, Media Chair, Republican Women of Prescott
On July 15, the Republican Women of Prescott (RWOP) presented Honor Flight with a donation of $5,715. This amount included a $500 check donated anonymously and given to President Sue Davis before the July meeting.
On hand to tell the RWOP membership of their travels to Washington, D.C., to view the memorial were three local veterans — Don McGee, Terry Ford and Maureen O’Neill.
Honor Flight pays homage to veterans of WWII, Korean and Vietnam wars by providing a three-
day all expenses paid trip to view the memorial in Washington.
Honor Flight receives no government funding and is 100% volunteer-based, relying on charitable donations to maintain its operations. RWOP has been a significant supporter of Honor Flight for more than 10 years.
Founded in 1942, the Republican Women of Prescott proudly holds the title of the largest Republican Women’s Club in the nation, with nearly 1,000 members.
